It's great that there are channels like yours to educate people on seed varieties. It took my yard a few years to get to where it is because of people like you and Pete. I used to pay a service to aerate/seed/fertilize my yard and was ripped off so I began to do my own research. I've used GCI TTTF and Spreader Elite the last few years with great results. Great vid!
Great tips. I like the Jonathan Green line. You make a good point; every property is unique and even different parts of your property may have its own needs.
I've gotten more comments about my black beauty original lawn this year than ever before. Yes I did notice some weeds popping up this spring after last fall's overseeing, but they stand out and are easily dealt with. Throwing down BB Ultra in a couple weeks and can't wait to see the results. Solar Green in the backyard is shining "like a new penny" as Pete would say.
Great information . I will be getting some JG dense shade ... Have some areas that need a little TLC. Look forward to seeing the church project. Press on.
I love JG’s Kentucky bluegrass. I planted it in my front yard and it looks great. For my backyard, I need a high traffic grass that grows rapidly and handles shade. I have a dog that runs and tears up the grass a lot and he likes digging small holes everywhere.
I used keystone from Jonathan green and it came in really nice it's a Pennsylvania blend it's one of the easiest seed to get to grow it's a awsome grass seed
Great info once again. I used JG Sunny and High Traffic last year. Seemed to look and do just fine for me. I’m going to purchase some GCI this year though to try!…..right after I Round Up my Bermuda 😂
Excellent Info!!! Love the T-Shirt😉.........We just received some of the "GJ"..."Gods Juice" lol 1st rain in about 8 days. Talk about Instant Green Up!!!💯💪👀
I am in Myrtle Beach SC . I have Jonathan green solar in my yard. I planted it last October and it is doing wonderful. Had some hiccups with fungus that would be with any grass. Still going strong even in the 90’s. I had so many people ask what grass I have.
Appreciate your honesty. I also renovated with GCI 2 years ago. Great results. I now need to work the dense and partial dense shade (some under tree canopy). Was already going with JG this year and thinking about mixing a few blends together now…
I've used Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra for the last two seasons. This grass seed during the fall, winter, and spring looks amazing!! The summer is altogether a different story. Even getting one to two inches of water per week still isn't good enough to overcome North Carolina heat. It started checking out late July in the areas that get full sun most of the day. For that reason, this year I have decided to plant the GCI Spreader Elite. Hopefully it will be a little less thirsty than the Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra since it doesn't have Kentucky Blue grass and Perinial Rye grass in the blend. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions as it definitely helps all of us lawn care nuts to make better choices in our lawn care journeys.
Thank you Mark, and I know exactly what you mean sir! I think you are making a good move and anxious to hear more on it as time goes on. Thanks for sharing!
I'm currently doing a complete renovation. I've overseeded in the past with JG ultra. I decided to go with JG original this time due to the rye stalks i was getting from the ultra. My buddy and I were torn between GCI and JG. So i decided to use JG and he's doing GCI. I know from experience JG original does well for my area. Midwest "Kansas".
@nnahler they both have come in great. This has been a very odd spring for us in Kansas. We started to experience hot humid conditions earlier than normal. Because this. I was still in spring flush. Grass growing fast. This caused some fungus issues in my lawn "JG" near the treeline. My buddy has had similar issues but has been able to tend to his lawn more. He was able to blow the grass back up using his blower. With that being said. We both have similar issues. Color wise, the JG is much darker. However, I think I may have had more weed seeds in the JG. I had clover come up. I was able to use Speedzone and tackle it though. Hope this helps. One thing I will mention. The spreading of the GCI seems to work incredibly well in his lawn. Man, I wish JG would get on this bus!
Did you friend use spreader elite or what GCI did he choose? I Reno’d my backyard with cool blue a few years ago and it looks great, the midnight KGB really is a spreader! I’ve heard a lot of folks talking about JG BB & weed problems this year!
Ive used JG seed when first getting into lawn care 9 years ago - great seed for the most part but I believe this seed blend gave me my POA problems what do you think? Now using GCI seed and am totally satisfied now.
Poa comes up from neighbors weed seeds, dormant seeds, and possibly aerating. I don't think in the slightest it could come from Jonathan Green seed. I like both a lot, and recommend them highly. Thanks for commenting!
I started a total lawn renovation last season and after much research I decided to go with Black-Beauty Ultra seeds exclusively and I've come to find a very problematic situation here, it seems that these seeds do a fantastic job for overseeing but grow in very poorly if used on areas of bare dirt. Its very strange but in areas that had even the most sparsely remaining grass, the ultra grew in very hardy but in the larger areas where i was starting from totally bare dirt, the seeds grew in very poorly and very thin, almost as though about 30% of the seed didn't germinate at all. Ill definitely be looking for other seeds to use moving forward because i cant keep doing all of this hard work over and over again, not to mention how much higher the ground keeps getting from adding more and more ground cover, I actually had to set the mower on a higher level because the ground is over an inch higher now. Im very dissatisfied with the performance of these seeds for a new lawn from scratch 😢
I like jonathon green but I’ve never used gci turf I watch his channel and would love to try it, I’m renovating my front this year and I originally wanted to go with the jonathon green black beauty PA mix, but the deciding factor of why I decided not to go with the JG is because it’s a blend, and I wanted to go with a single type of grass, I ended up going with barenbrug rpr, have seeded yet but I plan on it in the next couple of days
I live in the Central Piedmont of North Carolina (Kannapolis). I have tried almost all the big box store brands. Bouncing back and forth between warm & cool season grasses. Because of our weather, nothing stays. Front yard is full sun. Back yard is shade. What products do you recommend for overseeding?
@@Xarcell Well it’s very difficult to go cool season grass when you have spreading warm season there already. It doesn’t die easily. It’s a homeowners choice, but I personally like fescue bc it stays green 10 months out of the year. GCI Turf is my go to brand but that’s me.
Thanks for the great content. Agree with you on the .02 weed seed not being a big deal. But the bigger deal IMO is the “.08 Other”. This can be an outbreak of many things to include poa triv which ends up being a nitemare if it spreads. I’m not knocking JG but IMO for the money you pay and the quality and standards they claim they have then the seed tag should be 0% weed and other. If that were to change then I would be buying their BB Ultra and using that versus the others. (I love the color that ultra has).
I used Johnathan Green exclusively for a few years on my fall overseed and would constantly fight clover, poa triv, poa annua and even bentgrass. I stopped using their products and havent had any of the issues since.
Good day to u sir, what would do better up in the north east (Massachusetts) the black beauty or black beauty ultra with some kbg? What are your thoughts,
Probably need to start talking about spraying herbicides early enough if planning of overseeding. I'm not sure with speed zone but the stuff I use with my company says you have to wait 30 days. A bunch of people are going to be in that window soon. *Edit- Just looked up the label, it says 2 weeks.
Do you mean Jonathan green drought versus regular TTTF? If that is the questions, texas bluegrass is in the drought mix, not in Original black beauty mix.
You may not have a good answer to this, but I am curious what your thoughts are on this. I have almost 2 acres of lawn area around our house that we built 2 years ago. We are on a well and only have about 10gpm to work with so irrigation isn't really feasible for a yard of my size. My lawn is looking pretty rough this year with the heat and lack of rain we have had recently (I'm near Concord, NC). I am planning my overseeding efforts for september and I'm trying to decide what seed to go with. I really want to try the GCI or Jonathan Green seed, but I almost think that I should just go with a cheaper seed seeing as I don't have irrigation to keep it looking nice (or just alive) in the dead of summer. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Many don’t have irrigation, including me lol. It’s something you’ll have to decide, but I would probably avoid the Kentucky blue for awhile to establish it, so maybe look at the JG heat and drought seed? You can do almost anything, but locally Triple threat is a good option too. Local to NC. Cheaper costs. Hope that helps a little.
There's other options out there as well. You can get good quality seed from landscape suppliers in your area. I got mountain view grass seed and it was 50lbs for 110.00. Its spreading tall fescue
Absolutely. Tons of seed options out there, however the main point here is to evaluate if different blend type may be needed in your lawn. Thanks for commenting Mickee!
