Hi Mr. Ferguson, Thank you so much for this glowing review of our grass seed! We're so happy that SolarGreen has worked on your lawn in areas that you previously were not able to grow grass. Just a heads up, next year SolarGreen is going to be renamed Heat & Drought - but rest assured it will be the same product and still be available to you! If you want better results near your edges of your lawn where the grass meets the road, and where your mailbox is, we recommend putting down Jonathan Green Love Your Soil. As you mentioned, the soil in these areas is probably not as good, and may contain a lot of rock. Love Your Soil will relieve compaction and increase soil microbial life, increasing the grass' ability to grow there. Apply it as often as monthly (as long as the ground is not frozen) until you see the results you would like. This product can be used in conjunction with any other grass seed, fertilizer, or soil amendment product. We saw in your video that you mentioned the weed seed in our grass seed mixtures, and wanted to clear up any confusion around this. It is impossible to filter out all weed seed and inert matter when growing, harvesting, cleaning and packaging grass seed. With that being said, our grass seed lots are tested thoroughly with state of the art equipment before they are packaged for our customers. As you can see on the bag only contains .03% weed seed. However, it is not something to worry about, as these weed seeds are not noxious. There are two types of weed seeds- noxious and non-noxious or regular weed seed. The regular seed (which is the .03%) gets killed with a lawn mower or the grass seed outcompetes it immediately because they're weak and are not meant to be mowed. *Most of this weed seed is not viable.* The other type of weed seed (noxious) is more dangerous and is not in our grass seed at all! We hope that helps and clears up any confusion! Let us know if you have any questions!
Thank you so much for that info. And let me be clear on a few point too. I have been able to grow grass on my edges, however it’s during heat months that I lose a lot. With more water and Solar Green, this has been my best year to retain grass there. In regards to the weed seeds, I appreciate the clarity and hope you don’t think I was talking down about your product in any way. Just reporting what’s on the label, as other seeds are zero zero. Thank you for the update on the name change of Solar Green too! I know a lot of folks in my region are unaware of it, but now very interested in possibly trying it. God bless and thank you for commenting!
Looks like I’m going with a tall fescue/ bluegrass combo myself!! That just sealed it for me! I learned that bluegrass seeds are ten times smaller than fescue so a 90/10 bluegrass/fescue bag of seed by WEIGHT will basically be a 50/50 ratio of actual seed. I’m excited! If weather cooperates here in Kansas I’ll be throwing her down in a couple of weekends
My sidewalk strip/vanity strip always gets fried every year in Nashville. I am going to give this Jonathan Green solar green a shot. Thanks for the video and review of this product 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I have bought JG solar green seed. Will use in early September. Looking forward to seeing How it does. Here in Massachusetts this summer has been awful with high temperatures and no rain! My water bill is going to be bad!
@@MrFergusonLawn have you ever used double dark fertilizer from yard Mastery 16-0-0. I would like to try now before I aerate and overseed in early September. I also applied simple solutions 0-0-25 liquid
I’m also battling a patch of wild Bermuda in my tall fescue. Thought I had it dead last year but it has come back with a vengeance. I’ve been using ornamec 170 on it and it definitely hurts it but stresses the fescue as well.
Did they mention anywhere about the cold? I’m wondering if I can use that in NH. We’ve been getting 100 F days more frequently. But we still have winter and the cold.
I debated the Johnathan Green but didn’t like it had a percentage of weed seed. I have to say GCI Cool Blue TTTF/KBG is an awesome seed. As you mentioned your lawn has never looked better, my lawn has never looked this good in the 20+ years I have lived in my home. My lawn is thick like a carpet. I’ve had few challenges with fungus but lawn remained healthy for the most part. Some bio-stimulates helped as well. I will stay with the GCI seed ( if price stops increasing).
I know exactly what you mean. I was telling my wife that the Cool Blue lawn I had was one of the best. Just hard to keep it hydrated with water. Can't go wrong with GCI seed in my opinion.
@@MrFergusonLawn I have irrigation so it was a huge help. Without it, I know it would have browned out on me especially with the summer heat we had here in Upstate NY. . One thing I learned with tttf/kbg is that it looks best cut at 3”. Any higher it started to lay over.
A couple questions that I sure hope you can answer as I’m biting the bullet on seed in a week. 1- what’s the cut height for it? I prefer 2 1/4 most of the time on my fescue/bluegrass blend. 2- how did it hold up during winter? Does it check out completely or stay relatively green? How about spring green up?
Hey Aaron, you can go back and see for yourself in my content history! I was even mowing here in NC in January. HOC, that's up to you, but I never went below 3" I dont believe. Don't wanna risk cutting the crown of the plant. Not sure what results you would get lower than that height. You may need to look into it more. We don't really have "winter" in NC, but like I said, it grew until January and a month later it's Spring here, so I was mowing almost all Winter too. Looked fabulous! So that doesn't help much with "does it check out?" question. I think it's a great product, and I'm reapplying more of it in 2 days.
I appreciate you getting back with me. I’m in STL so the crux of the transition zone. Cold winters and apparently now long hot summers the last several with extended temps over 100. Hard to find that balance in a grass seed for dominance all year long. Thanks again!!
Would you please make us understand milorganite. Have you used it? If so when? What MonthResults? How often can this be applied. It seems to be very popular. Much appreciated
Thanks for the video review. I’m gonna try it this coming fall. Also, how did you treat that Bermuda creeping in your lawn? I too live in NC, the city of Charlotte. 😁
You can try Fusilade ii but be warned, it has killed Bermuda but also wants to kill the fescue. It’s tough. Best to use it in early spring or fall. Powerful stuff tho
I sprayed my 2nd spot app of fusilade today, it says I can seed after 14 days after app. I’ll more than likely overseed last week in Sept. I’m battling the Bermuda close to my bank and ditch as well. Still not sure what seed I’m using yet, prices are crazy!! Good luck!
I put a cheap sprinkler in my yard after seeding from scratch in the summer and my grass is still green in October while everybody else grass is yellow or light green. I put down zoysia and Kentucky bluegrass. I will germinate my black beauty solar green and over seed this week. My grass is already thick and dark green but with a few low spots and dirt patches about 2-4 inches, they were bigger but the grass is filling in but not good enough for me
Honestly I can’t say. I haven’t used BB Ultra before. The main difference however is Kentucky bluegrass in the Ultra vs Texas bluegrass in the Solar Green. I think it depends on location, but both are fine blends.
I'm not very familiar with the area, but I would imagine a warm season grass may be best for you. I'd talk with a local landscaper or sod company and ask what is the primary grass type in your area, and easiest to manage based on the amount of time you want to put into yard work. That's what I would do.

So I have some Solar green in my front yard here in Louisiana (it survived our 100F+ multiple weeks) and I’m planting some new seed this fall. My question is, did you use tenacity on your solar green? Is it safe? Thanks!
I did at time of seeding last year and it seemed to do just fine. It's right after it begins to come out that it's too late to apply it. Once it germinates, you need to mow it twice before using Tenacity on it (4 weeks). Hope that helps! More on this actually next week, as I deep dive into this exact topic.
If you are going to try and do a fescue in GA, this is what I would try, yes, or something very similar. Being it's designed for heat, it's your best chance I would say. You are in warm season grass territory, so if this seed don't work, you'd likely want to consider a warm season grass type.
I live in Michigan and just did a whole yard renovation with Johnathan Black Beauty last year and this year it is pretty good especially in the summer. You still have to water it though. I mow it high in the summer 3.5-4" and it look very nice. I will try Solar Green this month on one of my back yard just to test it out.
Wanted to use Black Beauty Rye grass for my backyard project, they said none in stock till spring. So they lost my business. Bought 4 other brands of Rye to test out.

Is there a reason to not do 100% texas bluegrass? Is it just expensive, or is the another reason?

The 25 lb bags of solar green are available from Johnathan Green directly. Just got some for my fall over seed.
