    I totally loved Shania, to me, she's at least in the top 10 characters in the game. My parents are very loving and supportive in my regards, and I love them for that, but seeing her story unfold made me realize even more how important and how glad I am for having them to grow with. If I had to describe Shania, I'd say she's a sad poem, one that strikes you right in the chest, but one that will help you understand and value all the important things that to some might seem like a gimmie. Because of her, I apreaciated even more Ghondor and Sena too, because they both teach an important lesson regarding interpersonal relationships.
    I can't believe there are still people that think videogames are useless and teach nothing, xenoblade is not just peak fiction, but a story that makes us better and I'll never get bored of saying this

      Also, many actors on Xenoblade became fans after, Harry McEntire (Noah, N) on Points of eXperience expressed how brave he found the writing to be compared to his past works - and he has been on big productions for major roles in the past; Skye Bennett (Pyra, Mythra, Pneuma) is passionate enough on the characters to form her own (albeit divisive, but valid) headcanons; Adam Howden (Shulk, Klaus, Zanza, Architect, Nopon Archsage) found it funny how there was a Xenoblade reference “I'm really feeling it!” written specifically for him in the Lego Star Wars game; IIRC David Menkin (Malos) keeps in touch enough to have that photoshoot with McEntire for Xenoblade reasons, holding up the numbers of their games by hand, with an iconic Howden reply with “1” middle finger; even with ones who confirmed haven't played the game afterwards still had good memories, like Jenna Coleman who recalled her role as Melia fondly before FC, and was after her rise to fame on Doctor Who, still willing to reprise as we know now.

    I dont understand how they made the most hateable character in the game Shania's complete prick of a mother despite nearly every Moebius gleefully committing war crimes for like 90% of their screentime, I swear its unreal how absolutely unforgivable they made her.
    Its equally amazing how this one sidequest turned Shania from an asshole who rubbed her victory in during the most emotionally charged point in the game and almost mandates that the player hates her guts to a tragic, broken shell of a character who really deserved better, poor lass. I mean, she was stuck between her mom, a complete monster, and Ghondor, who is just plain abrasive and insulting even when she's trying to give good advice. No wonder she snapped. At least we got the catharsis of Monica giving the MOTHER of all death glares to her mom, that look of "I swear I'm going to smack you if you don't cut that out" brightened my day something fierce after how downright depressing the prior scenes were. Probably for the best she stepped in though, I'm almost certain Ghondor would've outright killed the abusive, uncaring, borderline sociopathic old mudder then and there if she hadn't stepped in.

    I like Shania and Gondor's story. It's a friendship with good intentions but bad execution and misunderstanding. Ghondor was clearly full of regrets after the two Shania's death and those events probably learned her about empathy and consequences of her actions. Even if she wanted Shania to be herself, she couldn't understand that everyone isn't as brave as her and that she hurts her by trying to help her.
    And Shania story also made Sena growing . I have to admit that for a long time, Sena wqs the ouroboros I liked the least. I found that she felt too sorry for herself and that she wasn't herself enough. (Maybe I was a bit like Gondor 😅😅) So I liked that her ascension quest wasn't directly about her. Not because I didn't wanted to focus on her but because I think that she needed to learn from the story of others people to grow on her own story. Also , the Sugiri's quest made me starting to really appreciate her because it showed me she was grown enough to really take care to other people. Also, during the boss fight against Z in the theatre, Sena's speech before she broke her chain made me so emotional because her simple sentence showed how much she grown up!

  • @CycloneFox
    @CycloneFox Год назад +11

    Just finished Sena's backstory yesterday. I can see why the community might hate Shania, but she was always sympathetic to me. Even when she tried to do such horrible things. And it's sadly such a realistic image of how the real world treads people with mental illnesses, or even just low self esteem.
    Thank you for making this video. It was really good. :3 That effing tearjerker at the end made me ugly cry so much. xD
    One last important detail was the small talk between Monica and the party. Sena and the others who are still trying to understand the concept of a family ask her if it's all a lie and Monica answers that it's up to yourself. Someone very close to myself has a mother who is just like Shania's. And even when she knows and hears that there are people caring for her, the things that are made to you in your childhood are just so deeply rooted in your mind that people like that will always have it harder than others. That's how important the role of parents is in one's life.

    • @kidprime6863
      @kidprime6863 Год назад +1

      While I too cannot fully forgive the atrocities committed by Shania's treacherous actions, I am sorry for how it all happened to her. Monica had every right to be mad at her mom because she's a mother, too. Even if her and Ghondor don't always get along, at least they still love one another like a true mother and daughter. Sena and the others learned the hard way that not every family treats each other with love, care and support.
      It's all Shania's mom's fault, for not giving her the love, care and support she so deserved. Making her live in her father's shadow and expecting her to do better. That was the first domino to start this whole mess. The blood is on her hands, more than it is on Shania's.
      If I had my way, I would've shot her mom in the back after Monica told her off. So what if it's a cowardly move? She deserves no honor. You live without honor, you die without honor.

    I agree that Shania is a truly well written character that has been driven to her very limit.
    When I was growing up, I kept hearing appraisals from my teachers, and from my friends. When I was in Preschool, I got a 1st place in a painting class (wow I actually share so much with her is crazy). My friends told me it was good, my teacher told me it was a good job. My mom? She hanged it up and it’s currently in my grandma’s house.
    My dad? Put it next to a painting of my sisters, who, mind you, are 14 and 12 years older than me, and told me that I shouldn’t be complacent and think that I did a good job, because I still needed to grow. Is it an uplifting view? Totally, but 4 year old me understood “You’re nowhere near as good” so I gave up on painting, until a few years later, when I was around 14, I enjoyed drawing anime stuff (can you blame me?)
    So my dad got me into drawing classes, realistic art. Nowhere near my preferred style. My parents divorced when I was around 3. In hindsight it was probably a communication error that lead to that.
    So again, I gave up on drawing. I haven’t drawn a lot ever since, I actually think I couldn’t pull off the stuff I did when I was 14.
    My dad is a good man, I have never thought that he hurt me purposefully, he always tried to help me build off of what I showed interest in. I was interested in learning guitar, and he pulled some strings with his contacts and got a friend of his to teach me, and I realized that music is not really my thing. And he was fine with it, because that’s who I am.
    But when I told him that I didn’t draw anymore, he seemed surprised, like, really confused. I can’t really blame Shania.
    Because I too have wanted to linger in the endless now. Hell I’ve wished for a restart at some points in my life. From my past relationship, where I got cheated on, to my friend that took his own life during my second semester of college.
    I still am trying to figure out my strengths granted, I am a nerd, and find math fun at times, when it’s not repetitive that is. But, my sisters, one is a lawyer, the other is an architect.
    I grew up being compared with people far older than me. So what can I do to catch up to their expectations? A math teacher? A professor? That would never cut it.
    So yeah, I understand Shania really well. When Ghondor told her “This should be your call” it sting me in a way that many people have never made me feel. I hope one day, I can be brave enough to be able to be who I am, and stop comparing myself to others.

    As someone of the people who absolutely despise Shania, I'll try to offer my point of view about her character.
    Shania sure has to endure a lot of hardship in her life, but it is mostly only her abusive mother. The rest of the city encourages her, and even if artists are not regarded very high in a military society, they are still accepted and have their place in the City. The problem I have with her is that there are a lot of people in the world having a hard time, including yourself. But almost all of them deal with it still staying a decent person without turning to be a narcissitic, sociopathic mass murderer. So I guess, she was an entitled little Karen to start with, alwas seeking the problem with others and never with herself. She betrays everyone she knew right after she realised she'd never get what she wanted. Even in the end, when she states that there is no place for her in the world, it's the world casting her out and not herself.
    Always seeking the problem in others is also what seperates her from Sena. Both are seeking for approval and have low self-esteem, but Sena thinks she herself is the problem. So they're actually are two sides of a medal, but imo not by getting support or not but because Sena is internalising her problems, while Shania is externalising them. So while Shania wanted the world to burn, I believe Sena would have just died pretty fast without Mio's support.
    For Ghondor, in the flashback used by most to tell she's a bad friend, we only see the escalation of something going on for a while and only from Shania's view. Yes, Ghondor is foul mouthed, brutally honest and harsh to others and herself. But we also saw a lot of times that she actually encourade her using a way gentler side. And I personally think that she had it at least as hard as Shania. The pressure on her shoulders is even bigger after M gave her the key to the Cloudkeep.
    As a conclusion, I have to say that she is an extremely well written character since she's able to induce so many emotions in people, be it positive in your case or negative in mine. And that's what is making out a good villain.

      I agree with everything you said. You weren't wrong in any of it. This is why I said she was a controversial character at the beginning of the video. She can produce almost polar opposite reactions from people. She many not be the greatest person, morally, she's an incredible person, character wise.
      I feel I could've said more about Ghondor. Although Ghondor was tough on Shania, Shania shouldn't have put her entire being into Ghondor. If she wasn't satisfied with the support from Ghondor, she could've looked elsewhere instead of resenting Ghondor and letting the resentment control her.
      I could've said so much more in the video that I didn't even think of until now...

The few ones standing out are just tropes (like D's insanity), timed badly (like J's redemption which comes right after the queen got shot. Of course the probability of her being killed is not very high, but it's still Takahashi we're talking about) or not even a real villain (like C).
