  • Now that we have the AirPort Extreme router setup and working, let's extend the network wirelessly and make a larger more robust network! This could be done with any of Apple's routers, including the Time Machines.

    Thank you for posting this! It's still helping people after nearly eight years. I installed a new backup home generator and I wanted to use the generators iPhone app to monitor and control it remotely. But my WiFi signal didn't quite make it outside the house to where the generator is installed. Fortunately I never throw old electronics out. I still had an older model Airport Extreme sitting around. I wondered if I could use it as a wireless WiFi extender. All the instruction that I came across online seemed to expect that I'd be running an ethernet cable between my primary router and the one I wanted to use as an extender. That would not be a practical solution. Fortunately a search on RUclips led me to your channel. Fantastic! It works just perfectly for my purpose. The only problem I had at the start was is that my AirPort utility would not see the second AirPort Extreme. So I did a factory reset and then everything worked just as you described.

    THIS WAS EXCELLENT...Thank You! I have been messing around trying to figure out how to do this via the Airport Utility on my iMac for a couple of hours. The result was that one or the other would work but not both at the same time. In between losing my Internet connection and having it, I had your RUclips post displaying in the background so I dragged the link to my desktop before restarting the computer - again. By now I had already disconnected and unplugged the 2nd Extreme to end the torture but while doing so, clicked on the link I'd captured and started watching your post. The phone was what caught my attention... maybe that would work better - I had that app on my phone too! Plugged the 2nd Extreme back into the wall and followed the post using the phone to configure them. It was like "whaaat" this is working!
    Everything went together just like in your video. It even displayed a red dot" after the configuration and I tapped on it to see what else it could be. It was a notification that there was a firmware update for the 2nd Extreme. After the phone downloaded the update it proceeded to update the router through the app and everything worked flawlessly. In five minutes I had both routers talking to each other, seamlessly
    .
    So, 125 minutes: 120 minutes of pure frustration, 4 minutes of hope and optimism, 1 minute of "I can't believe this worked after everything else, and that = DONE!
    Thank You! Thumbs Up!

    I'm not quite ready to bite the bullet and buy new, meshy-type products to extend my network some; so, I bought a couple of used AirPort Extremes. I will return my cable company's router (I've had shortly) and go back to just their modem and revert to the Apple system I had... just will have two more now to the two I have plus I still use my AirPort Express to a music receiver. My routers will be ethernet or hard-wired connected; I have the cabling so I might as well use it. Thanks for showing me that you make no big deal out of resetting a router. I will do the same when my two used ones show up; these two, 6th generations (model A1521 with AC) are newer than my other two -- the one is the Time Capsule, 5th generation version (model A1408) with the spinning hard drive and the other is the short version, 4th generation (A1354). These older ones seems to be just fine for what we do here; I have never had to do anything with them for the longest time.

    Using airport extremes will give you a full 802.11ac deployment, airport expresses only do 802.11n.
    I've been doing this for 6 years with an Airport Extreme and two Airport Expresses. It's really an under sold feature of the Apple wifi line. Too bad it's being discontinued. The Airport Extreme rates as one of the best routers for both range and speed. I'd still suggest picking up a refurbished extreme for $120 and a couple refurbished expresses $50/each and build a solid 802.11n mesh network. or do two extremes if you want that full 802.11ac network.

      This is hilarious, 5 years later and with my serious lack of knowledge I’ve networked my entire 1,176sqm block of land (including 5 bedroom house and huge shed) with 3 Airport Extremes hardwired to each other and my NBN. I did have them piggy backing off each other wirelessly and got wireless everywhere when the experts said it couldn’t be done but hardwired them for consistency of connection between house and shed in bad weather.
      The only issue I have is the security protocols are out of date so when I’m financial I’ll have to get a decent router/modem thing to sit between the NBN box and the first AirPort Extreme. I also really wish Apple still did these things, they’re fantastic and specially for those of us willing to admit we’ve no idea and need our hands held. 😂

    Exactly what I was looking for! There's not enough information out there about how to extend your 802.11ac network using another AirPort Extreme. The guy at Best Buy told me it was not possible, and sold me an AirPort Express. Imagine my dismay when I set it up and it won't extend 802.11ac (just b,g,a, and n). Kudos to this video and a download of iStumbler to help figure out why my wifi upstairs was so crappy! I'm actually using a Time Capsule, but I would imagine it would work the same as an AirPort Extreme? Liked and subbed.

    I want to wirelessly extend my network to the guesthouse. So I am trying to connect an Apple airport extreme time capsule 802.11n WIRELESSLY to a NetGear R6300 AC1750 Dual band router supplied by Cox Cable (ISP). The Apple Airport Utility software doesn't recognize the NetGear router as wired router connected to my fiber optic internet modem. So, it keeps trying to make the time capsule as the primary router. I know it would be easier to simply buy an Airport Extreme 802.11ac and connect as shown in the video, but they are pricey. I tried to configure the Time Capsule MAC address using the NetGear genie software, but I an not an IT professional, so it's pretty greek. Any advice?

    I want to do the exact setup, but through powerline networking. Will that work as well? I don't see why not, but want to make sure.

    Does extending mean the same thing as bridging? I have them currently in bridge mode to extend the wifi to two dead spots. I never realized that when in bridge mode I could hardwire devices in to add to my network(just found that out). I'm probably not going to do this to the additional "extenders/bridges" but would like to know is being in bridge mode deprecates the extending mode? Thank you in advance for your help.

      +DeeJay Shepard when you do the extension it is a bridge mode

    Is there any advantage to setting up second one using Ethernet connection then move it to the room you need it in?

    • @painkillerO8
      @painkillerO8 6 лет назад

      That will be the best way to extend. It gives you great connection.

    Is there a reason to use a second Airport Extreme rather than an Airport Express as the extender?

    So our house is 4bdrm/2300 sft with 2 bedrooms upstairs. originally had comcast put modem in common area but the office upstairs at opposite side of house kept losing connection and I work from home. we moved modem to the office upstairs but smart tv's and devices downstairs had bad connection. bought nighthawk tri band x6 (299.00) and put it upstairs STILL no good connection downstairs. I'm considering buying 2 airport extremes (maybe a 3rd?) but should I swap my daughters' room with the office so that if i keep the main apple router downstairs in common area I can have my office keep a reliable connection?

      +Chris Richardson I had a bad time with the Netgear X8, but using 2-3 Apple Airports would work, or also check out the eero WiFi system.

    quick question. I have a 3Tb Time Capsule as my main router in the basement. I just purchased a new Extreme to try to make it the main router and then move the Time Capsule upstairs as an extender. How can I keep my same network and replace the older Time Capsule with the new Extreme?

    • @ryanhanrahan1050
      @ryanhanrahan1050 4 года назад

      wifi signals move downward! this was a year ago but if you haven't, move your main router out of your basement and maybe extend it to the basement but in general keep those things up high

    • @GeekSmart

      I don’t believe you can do it like this, you would have to do a repeater mode. I haven’t tried doing a non-apple extension with the airports.

    Have you added another extreme to this setup? I have three, but when I've tried to setup, the third one always extends from the base instead of from the second extreme.

    • @GeekSmart
      @GeekSmart  8 лет назад +1

      +Jay Campbell it will always be that way. The main extreme is the main router and the only one assigning IP addresses. So, even if the third is connecting through the second one, it is still an extension of the first.

    • @JayCampbell_CA
      @JayCampbell_CA 8 лет назад

      So, I have the main extreme in the basement, then the second one directly above it on the main floor. The third I have put in the far corner of my main floor hoping that it can use the stronger signal from the second, but it's just picking up the basement signal, and it's pretty weak. Any other options on how to get the area where my third extreme is, to a more powerful signal?

    If I use a 2nd one, will I still get the same speeds in my bedroom that my living room Airport Router gets? My bedroom is about 60 feet from my livingroom.

    Your video was incredibly helpful. Thank you! I am using an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express. I followed your directions exactly, but instead of getting a solid line from my Internet to my Airport Extreme and a dotted line from the Airport Extreme to the Express, I got a bracket from the Internet with the Extreme at one end and the Express at the other. Did I do something wrong? I'd show you the picture from my Airpot Utility, but I don't know how to load a picture to this. Thanks!

    • @GeekSmart
      @GeekSmart  6 лет назад

      It sounds like they are acting like 2 independent networks, and not as extending the primary unit.

    • @Don-ud7ts
      @Don-ud7ts 6 лет назад

      Yes, that's exactly what is happening although I followed the directions in the video exactly. Any suggestions on how to remedy? My DL speeds downstairs where the Express is are nearly half of what my DL speeds are upstairs where the modem and Extreme are. Really appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge. :-)

    • @GeekSmart
      @GeekSmart  6 лет назад

      The only other think I could think of is that it is placed too far away from the primary unit. Try placing closer and see if that helps

      These are designed for the Apple home and would need a iPhone, iPad or Mac to setup. At their current age however, I no longer recommend using these routers.

    Can I use my AirPort Extreme router to extend my network from a non Apple router?

    • @oneeyedrone4293
      @oneeyedrone4293 3 года назад

      no that is not possible, at least not through the app. There are some other utilities that modify netgear routers to allow repeating.
      You would need to use an ethernet cable between the routers and then yes your airport extreme could extended the original router signal, but only wire connection between the routers. That method works on any router system.
