FINALLY someone walks you through the WIRED connection on multiple apple extremes. Whats nice is you did both methods wired/wireless setup. Nice and easy showing steps on your iPhone. GREAT VIDEO !!!!!!
Thanks for creating this very helpful video! It was very easy to follow the instructions. I used to get bad signal in my bedroom. I had an old Airport Express that I was not using, and after watching this video I connected that to the Airport Extreme, and it worked beautifully. Now the signal is so much better in my bedroom. Thanks again!
I know this is a really old video, but you just helped me tremendously! Thank you for posting this. I have a detached studio on my property and I've tried wirelessly extending my second airport extreme from the main house with pretty bad results and significantly reduced speeds. I bought a Cat6 outdoor cable and ran it from the main Airport Extreme to the studio one, reset it, and now I have EXCELLENT connection! Thank you again!
This is AWESOME. I upgraded to a new Extreme 6 months ago and no matter what I did to follow Apple's instructions, it would never see my old unit which I wanted to use to extend my network. So I gave up. Found this video this am and had it working in minutes. THANK YOU!
Bought an express five years ago and it has been 100% troublefree. I tried netgear and belkin before that and got tired of all the issues, daily reboots, etc. Apple makes the best routers known to me! I just ordered an extreme to use as my basestation and the express I will use as an extender. I’ll try wireless first then maybe hardwire it later if needed. I guess they stopped making routers maybe because they kind of hit a ceiling, there is no need for anything better than an extreme. It’ll likely be ten years before anyone will need anything better.great video!
I just resently add a second Apple router as an wifi extender and it was ridiculously easy. I no longer have any Wi-Fi dead spots. The only thing I did differently was the second one I used as an extender I used the same network name and password and after doing that I had no connection issue with any of my devises.
I'm still using my old Apple Extreme, not to jinx myself but never had a problem with it. I just need one extra port to connect a Tablo:) I have a Cat 6 ethernet cord someone gave me on hand, would that work ok with my Apple Extreme? I'm looking to buy an unmanned ethernet switch soon.
Convenience was the primary factor in my choice to go with Apple over other routers. The hardest part of the setup was taking it out of the box! I really do appreciate the way Apple makes their products so simple and easy to understand. I live in a 3 bedroom, 3 floor townhouse and the AirPort Extreme manages to cover nearly every sq.inch with an excellent signal. My garage seems to have the weakest reception out of all areas tested and I spend a lot of time there so I may consider extending my network in the future. Thanks for the video.
I've purchased an Airport Time Capsule a year ago and was wondering on how to extend my network. This video is very informative. I plan to be purchasing multiple airport extreme in the future similar to your setup. Thanks for posting this video.
I just switched from a netgear to an extreme and its great. The netgear cut out all the time, was slower, and had poor range, and it was not cheap. Great video BTW
Thanks for this (aged) video. Other than iPhones and iPads everything else is pretty old (13+ ). I was extending my even more aged network with a used Airport Extreme as the WIFI in my bedroom is too slow. I knew it was easy with Apple but you have given me the support I need. As someone else has said the Apple information is not as helpful or as easily understood.
Thanks for the guidance and instructions, I don't know anything when it comes to internet and wireless set up and I managed to configure a second time capsule to my network. Your instruction was invaluable.
Hi, same case here. My IP is awful, so I decided to install a TP-Link Archer MR600 4G Modem + Wireless Router Dual Band AC1200 and let it be my main wifi router and move ATC to the basement to keep its TimeMachine function over wired LAN and serve as a wifi range extender there instead of being a wifi router. I wonder if it can become a range extender as easily as it do with an Apple main router?
There is this protocol Atot wee Atot which makes your printers work faster and File server runs faster. Its free to download and the Atot wee Atot is easy to setup and you will want a PC running Windows 10.
Apple Airports are the best! Before these i was fighting routers all the time, since Apple Extreme i have been problem free! I even had our Dachshund install it once it it that simple..A+ for Apple on this product.
It actually does have a hard drive. I just refurbed my own with a new drive to replace the other. It is better to use their manufacturer for the hard drive replacement, but I had a different manufacturer drive so I had to be creative in modding the black rubber padding to accommodate my drive.
Good info. Wired is always the preferred method. Wireless is ok but it slows your throughput speed. I have two of these wired and I am getting a third to improve my roaming network.
how do i get my device to switch to a different device as i move throughout the house? they are still connect to the original which is "weak" when I move rooms.
These videos are packed with information - sometimes seems slow, but when I need the detail, it's all there. These are a lot more useful than the Apple websites, which seem strangely out of date and unhelpful on this subject. And it's great to see you having fun with technology. Thank you. One thing that I found particularly difficult was using the Airport Utility on the Mac. It's got a lot of options and I didn't know where to start when setting up a new wireless base station. This video was great, because the set up on the iPhone is easy. It would be great to see this done on the Mac as well.
I have an AirPort Extreme (6th generation)as my main router. I wanted to extend my network as I have a weak spot in my bedroom. I purchased an older AirPort Extreme (2nd generation) and tried extending. It appeared to work at first, but now it seems to drop a lot. My question is, is it not ideal since they are both different generations? According to some research it appears the older version can do either 5Gh or 2.4GH, but not dual. I assume it’s ideal to have the same generation Apple routers talking to each other? Any thoughts? I know sadly Apple is out of the router business now. Thanks!
I just picked up a 1st version for £10 . Thanks for the advice. I might get a couple more , they're almost free now ! Cured the dead spot at the rear of house and back garden .
I find it confusing that you have your “uplink” Ethernet connection going to your other AirPort Extremes. In my setup, which is similar to yours, I only have “uplink” going to my modem.
I need help with my Airport Extreme I have set up with a cable and ethernet from main house where wifi comes into modem. Flasing yellow slow. Cannot get it to reconnect to the internet.
Tell me please, if an external hard disk is connected to one of the roaming airports, will it always be available if the consumer can switch to an airport without a disk?
I feel so dumb but I can't figure this out... I have one Time Capsule on the first floor and one AirPort Extreme in the second floor. Using the AirPort Extreme as a repeater won't work well because they are too far from each other I get only 40 Mbps at best (I usually get 500 Mbps downstairs). Can't I just connect the AirPort Extreme on the second floor through Ethernet to my modem just like my Time Capsule so that I can connect to the same Wi-Fi network with even speeds through my house?
Just got one from AAFES for 50% off. Setting it up was a pain but then again, I have Japanese internet. It's so limited vs. other routers. I still don't know how to check the generation so I don't know how it compares on the AC chipset for speeds. I can say that one SSID is nice and verified that I am connected to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously. I also like the active cooling (fan on bottom) which most high end routers DO NOT have (such as my Asus RT-N66U). I wish it came with Win OS install instructions even if no disc is present. I imagine that is why it was returned as it seems the wiring was not unwrapped or black sticker on bottom.
- The ethernet cable from your main Airport Extreme router to the roaming Extreme goes into the roaming's WAN port (circle) not the LAN (arrow). - Also, I was able to do this using the original flat white Extreme (10/100) as a wireless roaming station too.
I know this is an old video. I am hoping you can answer my question. I am not sure if I hooked my time capsule up right. I picked to join my existing network. I am able to access it on my normal network and add files to the capsule hard drive, but I can also log in to my time capsule for wifi? If I buy another time capsule, would my 2tb turn to 4tb? Or two different 2tb networks?
Is it possible to use these as a wireless backup, without connecting via ethernet? My goal is to be able to back up some files (Usually nothing more than under 1GB file size, if that) from my PC to this.
I am trying to setup a similar setup in my house but have a trouble when I hook up my express to the WAN port you show being used. As soon as I hook up my express the system loses it's mind cause the extreme (base station) and the extreme (expander) both have somethinghooked up to the WAN and it doesn't work. My setup is... Cable Modem------>Airport Extreme(WAN)----->switch(LAN)------->AirPort Express (WAN)
+techgooch Thanks! I reset the express and went through the on screen setup. Everything works great and my network is much more robust! Thanks for the vid and great work.
Cable > Modem > MAIN Extreme > Extreme 1, and Extreme 2, 8-Port Gigabit Switch. Extreme 1 > PS4, and Apple TV. Extreme 2 > another Apple TV, and a printer? 8-Port Gigabit Switch > External Hard Drive 1, External Hard Drive 2, External Hard Drive 3, DVD player, Home Phone, and Computer? Time Capsule is linked via wifi. I'm assuming that: the other Extremes are on the 2.5 GHz wifi channels, the external Hard Drives are for video editing and or movies, the modem is the Arris Motorola Surfboard Modem, The Gigabit Switch is TP-Link or Netgear brand.
Great video. I would like to know if I extend the network for a second airport (wired) and both merge the wireless, will I be locked in the main router even the signal is weaker? Or the device will understand and switch to the stronger router? I have a weak signal in the kitchen and want to reforce it. But I´m afraid it don´t give up the weakness signal.
+techgooch I setup my network in a very similar manner, however, I used my imac to setup the routers themselves. My problem is that my wifi devices do not switch routers (WAP) as a move from room to room to pick up the best signal. I need to cycle the wifi off on my device to connect to the best router for that location. Does yours work the same or is there something that I need to adjust on mine to allow for the automatic switch to the best possible WAP? TIA.
Interesting, I never had that issue with my Apple routers. I would maybe check the channels they are set on, but otherwise I cannot think of anything in particular that you need to do to get it to work properly.
I am trying to do this but have them connected through a switch. It's a netgear switch but I'm not sure if its managed or unmanaged. Does that matter? The only way I can get it to work is to extend the wireless network of the base station. The airport extreme extension is in bridge mode. If I unplug the Ethernet cable, it keeps on ticking so i think it's set up in repeater mode. Speed is much less than near the base station. The base station is Airport Extreme Time Capsule and the extension is an older 4th gen airport extreme.
If the ethernet from the main to the roaming Extreme goes through a switch, it should not matter (Apple says). However, I tried to set up my run of ethernet to the roaming unit so it went strait from the main Extreme to the remote (an Express in this case). Even there, there is one cable break (so if I wanted to add a switch I could later). I guess technically, it is a one plug switch. No problems.
I want to extend my network in a straight line from my house out to my barn about 300 feet. I have a building in the middle I can plug in another extreme. I think the wifi signal is weak at the halfway point.
+Craig G the signal would have to be strong enough to work. There are other ways to transmit with a long range wireless Ethernet Bridge that would work better.
Hello. Thanks for the info. Very helpful. I want to reconfigure/setup my wireless network. Current configuration works but I am not using all the tools/hardware I have available for maximum benefit, I have multiple dead spots, and am not leveraging network hard drive/backup sharing, printer sharing, etc. So want to start over and setup properly. In past this was done by pros way back when with other gear/ISPs and modems, etc. Been maintaining and getting to work myself but think I am making it harder than it should be after watching you video! I have never seen a apple extreme or express setup outside of Airport Utility! I use the utility and go in and configure manually and seeing how you did it was MUCH easier, but my issues might be I am mostly windows. I have a Comcast High Speed internet and modem (not wireless), 1 newer Apple Extreme Tower, 2 older apple extremes (1 model before tower, then an older 1), multiple Airport Expresses, Windows 10 Desktop, Windows 10 on Surface Book, Android phone, Apple iPad2 (old version, 2nd model I believe, 5+ yrs old?). I have ability to hardwire Extremes and/or expresses in different corners of my colonial. I have multiple separate sound systems in house so I use Expresses/Extremes to stream music from main desktop that houses 200GB of music on an external hard drive. I believe that should be a shared network drive for whole network but currently just attached to desktop. I am wondering if I should do that factory reset solution you showed in this video and start over, all way back to initial Extreme attached to modem and then setup all extenders USING the iPad and the auto setup you showed on your phone? Will that work on an older iPad? You didn't show setting up main Extreme attached to Modem, only Extenders, but if that can be setup like you showed on iPhone using my iPad, maybe starting over with everything to factory settings is worth a try? Appreciate any thoughts/suggestions. Sorry for long message but this has caused me lots of hours and think I am making it harder than it should be. Teenagers not happy with wireless network and giving me grief! Thanks!
Sos setup of main Extreme is fairly similar, just choose Create New Network option for the main router, then follow what I did for each extender. The Apple Routers are easiest setup from the Airport Utility.
Hi, An ORBI is setup in my house and I have an Apple Time Capsule which I want to use to extend the ORBI signal in the house. Need some advice please: Do I connect the ORBI with the Capsule thought the Capsule WAN or LAN port? Will this extend the ORBI WIFI through the Time Capsule or will the Time Capsule create another WIFI network which I need to connect to? My objective is to set it up so that it works the same as the ORBI satellite, but at the moment it creates another WIFI network. Rgrds
Did you experience that the internet speed is very very slow using the wirelessly extended airport extreme? Is that the reason why you are using wired extension?
I tried this many times to extend my wifi with the time capsule 3TB - however always get an Unexpected Error. Ended up generate wifi with same SSID and than it finally worked. Don't understand why the wifi extention does not work
Hello :) Thanks for the tutorial :) We have 2021 now and would you still recommend doing this to extend the range of wifi network at home? Or would you do it differently now?
Thanks for the video. Setting up was pretty easy. I picked up 2 of these and maybe a 3rd though I dont think I need the 3rd. Im with you on using LAN cables over WiFi when possible. 75% of my devices are by cable. Heck even fire stick had a LAN adapter. These Airport extremes can be picked up on Ebay for 40$. Just have patience and dont overbid. These units beat out my Linksys EA6900 that's just a few year old and was starting to have many disconnects when Using PLEX media server. So far so good with the Airports. Most of my devices are apple and I think they play very nice together. Im happy not having to spend 300$ on a high end router. Im getting 220mps+ over the 5gxz band now. I was getting 120 before with the Linksys router. I think I paid close to 200$ for the Linksys
Great Video! I have a question about which port do you plug the Ethernet cable into on the Airport you are using to extend your network in the bedroom? Thank You, Kenneth
Could you please help I have a AirPort time capsule , I had it connected on my MacBook and could see it connected through the airport utility. I was trying to connect my iPhone but the airport utility wouldn’t find it , so I reset the airport time capsule and now the airport utility can’t find the airport time capsule or my iPhone.
PLEASE ADVISE. Looks like Apple killed the wired extension network feature and it creates conflict in the network saying - set to extend a specific network but cant find it. When extending via wireless works great ! Anyone run into this issue and how to solve it ?
Thanks so much. Set up my new Airport Extreme with no problem, but can't get my HP Laser printer (w) to work with it... Suggestions? And also, can I run my 'My Book' external hard drive off of the Airport Extreme?
Depends on how you set it up. If you do traditional connection, just out in password. If you do easy "push button" setup, you need to set it up through the AirPort Utility
I heard in another video that in order to extend an Extreme network by attaching another Extreme with a HARDWIRED connection, the second Extreme needs to be in Bridge Mode, otherwise when you choose "Extend Network" it's just going to use the wi-fi signal to extend the network (not the wired connection) which sort of defeats the purpose of having them hardwired together. Is this correct?!
+Alison Chubb Yes you're correct. He needs to put both of the extended routers in bridge mode. this will allow the highest throughput and most reliable network.
I read the same Alison. And as Wade confirmed it, it does allow the highest throughput. However, I still have a question regarding extending networks with Airport Extremes - which I like to run by both of you. Can you roam seamlessly from one airport connection to the other in one network or do you really have to manually log in each time?
+Norman Villefort Hi there. I will be setting up my hardwired Airport Extreme network in the next few days and I was wondering the same. I heard that in a hardwired roaming network in bridge mode one will often have to toggle their WiFi off and on again on their devices so they pick up the strongest signal source. Wondering if this is correct? Thanks a lot again for the great videos, they have been very very helpful and informative :)
Doesn't work in 2023 as Apple firmware updates killed the option - at least with non-Apple networks. Trying to find the firmware to rollback to....anyone?? Thx
I guess I'm not even going to plug in thr Nighthawk x8, I'll just go buy a airport extreme. I have the old airport extreme and express and I need to extend it a little more. Let's see how that goes.
I tried to do this over a wired setting as the wireless does not reach to where my Time capsle and the base time capsule is and it would not extend the existing network but create a another new one? If I moved them within range of each others wifi signal to create the network (still connected by cat5 cables as well) and then moved them apart so only the wired connected would be in reach would that work? I have a network of 3 time capsules and an airport with one capsle on a wireless extension (I cannot get a cat 5 to it) and the other tow will be wired as one is in a garden room and the other in the garage app end of the house to the base capsule?
+andrew brindley to extend with Cat5, do not extend wirelessly first and then move, you will have to extend with the wire via setup. On my GeekSmart channel I have a newer video on setup ruclips.net/video/oEGUBsWTDPs/видео.html
Sorry did you mean set up wirelessly 1st and then use cat 5? I have managed to extend but only to create a new network so different SSID etc which is a pain. Can I have an extended wired network with the same password and network name?
Are all of your routers connected via wires to the modem? Say I want to set up a router downstairs in my basement, if my modem and setup is upstairs would I have to literally wire a cord all the way from my upstairs modem to my basement? Is that what you did with the different rooms and routers? Thanks great video!
I really like your video but I have a question: Are you SURE that "extending" your network in this manner is actually using your ethernet as the backhaul rather than the 2 Airports just talking to each other wirelessly? Looking at Apple's own documentation on the matter, is sounds like the only way to take advantage of utilizing the ethernet connection is to setup a "roaming network" (having each airport create it's own network, but setting the SSID's/password to be the same) - which is very different than extending the network: support.apple.com/en-us/HT202056 Based on what I'm reading, extending seems to be wireless only, and therefore subject to a huge performance decrease. (around 50%) I'd love to be proven wrong though...
Replying to my own question here as I actually tried this last night with an airport express: If the new airport express/extreme you're adding to your network is connected to ethernet (back to the base router), choosing to "Extend" your network will setup the new device as a "roaming" device. (a roaming network is one where additional access points are put in bridge mode, but use the same SSID/password as the main WiFi router. This will cause client devices to "hop" from one access point to another as you roam around the house. It's not nearly as slick as a true "mesh" style network (Eero, Luma, Ubiquiti, etc) but it does work reasonably well) Anyway, the fact that it's smart enough to do all the work for you is really cool. If you go back and look at the newly added device, you'll see that it's in bridge mode, and the wireless type is not "extend a wireless network", but rather "create a wireless network". Again, it did this because it noticed you had ethernet backhaul to the main router. Without that, the wireless type would have been setup as "extend a wireless network", which is OK but will have a big performance penalty. Thanks again for the great video.
Can I extend the wifi signal connecting the airport extreme to the company router? The question is because my brother wants to keep the company's router and I have the AirPort Extreme doing nothing so I want to extend the wifi signal to the basement. Thank yo!!,
Doesn't hitting "Extend Network" extend it wirelessly regardless of whether or not the WAN cable is plugged in? I think you need to setup the main router, then just set the other APs in bridge mode with the same SSID, security protocol and password. (Or maybe the Airport Utility has been updated to do this automatically when it detects an ethernet WAN connection?)
Hi, I have a problem with my setup, that I hope You can help me with? I have the newest Airport Hub that I use as the main network and i would lie to extend the network as I also have some dead zones in my house. I have tried to extend my network, with both an Express and with an Extreme, but it ends up with the same result. My cabled network, which the Express or the Extreme should use to extend the wireless network, stops working and the wireless network breaks do at the same time. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried to reset both the Express and the Extreme to factory settings, but it ends up with the same result. Hope that You are able to help me. Thanks in advance.
+Kristian Nøhr interesting, so you are using Ethernet cables to connect them together? You shouldn't have a problem unless there is a problem with the main Airport since it is doing all the routing and the others are just extending. If nothing else, try wireless extension as well to diagnose the problem. I also have another video on my GeekSmart channel that is a little newer than this one.
My wife used your vids to create a Apple newwork with two Apple WiFI routers (the skinny one and the tower one. Now she can not remember or figure out to link the skinny one to the tall one. Can you point her to your video where U explained how to do this, she can not find it now. Thank You
Hi Brian I have done something very similar my question is wireless client some have different numbers Also I have 3 extrems and2 expresses only one is wireless should the wired device's have the wireless client and number next to them . It allbseamsto be working ok but can I make It work even better by doing some small changes Thanks
I have a question. I have a Airport extreme 6TH GEN, but I also have a 3TB Time capsule that I have used for a while. Is it possible to introduce the Airport Extreme and keep the Time Capsule separate? When I start to setup the AE tells me that it will resort my TC to its default settings. How will this impact my TC's performance. What I wanted to do was have them operate separate of one another, but it looks like I may need to extend the network. Suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.
On the same network it is best to use it to extend the same network, having dual routers is usually not a good idea. If you do reset it, it does not erase the time capsule drive, only the network settings.
How is the heat in the new shape ones, I have three of the old flat style and they run so hot. Thinking of upgrading to the new one. As you have one of the old style, would say 1, New runs cooler. 2, is it worth upgrading. My network is solid and I to hard wire the base stations together like you do.
Hey Can You Help Me Setup My Time Capsule As Not A Router But As A Extender Of My Network, I’m Using A Netgear N600 Cable Modem/Router & Hooked Up My Time Capsule, & Just Want To Use It As A Network Extender
Can i extend my wifi using an Airport Time capsule to an almond wifi extender..having problems w/ that being I'm using an Eatel cable company router(time capsule hard wired to router lan) PLEASE HELP so i won't have to spend another astronomical & obscene amount of money on another apple airport extreme, express & etc.
Great tutorial! I'm purchasing an airport time capsule for back-up purposes. I currently have an airport extreme as my router with an airport express as an extension. Any suggestions which airport I should use as the base station (extreme vs time capsule)?
I noticed you've changed the third device name to "bedroom" so you know which one the device is, but can you give that device a different WiFi name and password from the main base station?
Just curious, why not use airport express as extenders? Just wondering because I use expresses in my basement and upstairs and want to know if using extra extremes is better or is it all the same?
Can I extend the network wired and wireless? Looking for ways to extend my network for both wired and wireless solution. I have 2Airport extreme and one express. Currently I have 3 different SSCD's but wanting to have just one SSCD. this way I can have one wired network through the house and one wireless SSCD. So, when I'm on iPad it'll just be on one wireless SSCD. Is this possible with your set up? Thanks
Hi techgooch, I was hoping maybe you could answer a couple questions about extending my network. Currently i have 1 current gen airport extreme, with 80211ac, and an airport express latest generation. My question is, I've had a lot of unreliability with the express and airplay. Basically I have to keep the express in extender mode for it not to start developing random airplay pausing. Also it's not ac equipped so it slows the network down. I have come up with a solution for the airplay solution which is to install an AirPlay receiver on my linux based media server, and tie that into the home theater. My question is, Can I replace the express with a second extreme, and gain two devices running at the latest wireless spec, and also wireless to wired gigabit Ethernet. I can get 10/100 bridged wireless to wired with the express in extend mode My hope was to upgrade to a second extreme so the Server can use it's full gigabit port speeds. This would be the best and cleanest solution for me, if it's possible. If not, the current setup seems to be working. I just lose some local Lan speed to the server. Thanks in advance Have a great day!
Thanks for the reply, I was able to come up with a cheaper solution and still keep the AC connection speeds. I was able to run a 25 ft cable around the edge of the living room to the other side where the desired hardware was to hard wire. It's very clean and I put a kitchen matt in front of the back door and bedroom door (being a 1 bedroom apartment to cover the exposed cable. Since the apartment has a fairly thick carpet instead of hard floor, the cable seems to be safe, and has enough padding on both sides not to be in any danger. Then I installed a Netgear proSafe 5 port gigabit switch where the cable ends to distribute the wired connections. This has eliminated all of the non 5Ghz incompatible devices, ensures a stable wired connections to the streaming hardware, and Just overall seems to be a solid solution. Thanks again, have a great day!
FINALLY someone walks you through the WIRED connection on multiple apple extremes. Whats nice is you did both methods wired/wireless setup. Nice and easy showing steps on your iPhone. GREAT VIDEO !!!!!!
+R M thanks! Glad to help!
Have 3 wired for mesh. Still using today, they are amazing.
Its 2022 and i just found out now that we can do the apple extreme wireless. Now I can do my 3 extreme and 3 express with my whole house.
Thank you
Just purchased a 2nd Airpot Extreme for downstair...thanks for you your help! Took me less than 5 mins to set up great instructions!
Great, no problem!
Thank you very much! Your instructions were clear and precise. My flat is now exercised of all dead zones!
+Joseph M. Hosbach your welcome
Thanks!!
Great help, much quicker than Apple's genuine instructions. My extended network was ready to go in just 10 minutes. Congrats from Switzerland!
Thanks for the guidance and instructions, I don't know anything when it comes to internet and wireless set up and I managed to configure a second time capsule to my network. Your instruction was invaluable.
Hello, how can a follow the process when I want to use AirPort Time Capsule as extender but my main router is NOT an Apple router? Thank you.
Great help in setting two Apple Extreme Routers wirelessly...Better than anything else I've found on line re: this procedure....Many Thanks...
Perfect...glad to help
That is the Time Machine version.
Good info. Wired is always the preferred method. Wireless is ok but it slows your throughput speed. I have two of these wired and I am getting a third to improve my roaming network.
how do i get my device to switch to a different device as i move throughout the house? they are still connect to the original which is "weak" when I move rooms.
+Jeff Merritt it should automatically switch to the router with the strongest signal.
The time you take going in to detail about products is great, I really enjoy watching your videos!
Thanks, I do enjoy sharing my knowledge!
+techgooch What switch did are you using please?
I was surprised after watching this video to see that you only have 6,000 subs, you produce very good quality content.
Thanks! I work hard for all those subs, and am proud of them! I will continue to work hard to earn more!
I find it confusing that you have your “uplink” Ethernet connection going to your other AirPort Extremes. In my setup, which is similar to yours, I only have “uplink” going to my modem.
Can I extend my net with a airport router where my base router is of a different make? If so will you please help?
how did you hide the cables running through the whole house from port to port?
I need help with my Airport Extreme I have set up with a cable and ethernet from main house where wifi comes into modem. Flasing yellow slow. Cannot get it to reconnect to the internet.
Tell me please, if an external hard disk is connected to one of the roaming airports, will it always be available if the consumer can switch to an airport without a disk?
what is the speed difference between hardwired and wireless? and thanks, awesome informative video!
+tigerlicks depends on device and connection
I feel so dumb but I can't figure this out... I have one Time Capsule on the first floor and one AirPort Extreme in the second floor. Using the AirPort Extreme as a repeater won't work well because they are too far from each other I get only 40 Mbps at best (I usually get 500 Mbps downstairs). Can't I just connect the AirPort Extreme on the second floor through Ethernet to my modem just like my Time Capsule so that I can connect to the same Wi-Fi network with even speeds through my house?
Can you do the linking if you're hardwiring through an unmanaged switch?
+Michael Trumbell yes
He said that in 5:04 - Main/Master AirPort Extreme ETHx -> WAN port on "slave" AirPort Extreme etc.
Does your devices automatically switch to the nearest router when you move about the house? Is that done via using the same SSID?
+MQMirza95 +techgooch I'd like to know too!
Yes, no noticeable lag
Port Forwarding? How to Setit up DHCP and Nat config, it appears DHCP range conflict with WAN on mine
Cable Modem------>Airport Extreme(WAN)----->switch(LAN)------->AirPort Express (WAN)
Did you make sure to reset the Express? I also have another video on my other channel GeekSmart
+techgooch Thanks! I reset the express and went through the on screen setup. Everything works great and my network is much more robust! Thanks for the vid and great work.
How do you know what router you are connected too My iphone only shows the network name ?
When trying to extend my network I’m only getting the main router as an option, is there a fix ?
THANK YOU!!!!!!! Just hooked up 2nd Airport Extreme in an upstairs location. The AirPort Expresses didn't cut it. THANK YOU!!!
Wires are the best since speed is much better than wireless to wireless.
Thanks :) You did a good job explaining and in late 2018, it still work the same way. Now i was able to extend my network :)))) Yeahhh !
Do they work well as a whole home set up or only as extenders?
Question can I add second AE to my first one wirelesly and then use ethernet ports on it?
I want to extend my network in a straight line from my house out to my barn about 300 feet. I have a building in the middle I can plug in another extreme. I think the wifi signal is weak at the halfway point.
+Craig G the signal would have to be strong enough to work. There are other ways to transmit with a long range wireless Ethernet Bridge that would work better.
***** Thanks I'll check that out
This helped me so much. Solved my problem so easily. Thank you so much !! And I appreciate your simple and direct instruction.
Very cool post. Simply, clear and straight forward. Please continue to post.
Thanks!
No problem
Hi,
An ORBI is setup in my house and I have an Apple Time Capsule which I want to use to extend the ORBI signal in the house.
Need some advice please:
Do I connect the ORBI with the Capsule thought the Capsule WAN or LAN port?
Thank You,
Kenneth
Could you please help I have a AirPort time capsule , I had it connected on my MacBook and could see it connected through the airport utility. I was trying to connect my iPhone but the airport utility wouldn’t find it , so I reset the airport time capsule and now the airport utility can’t find the airport time capsule or my iPhone.
PLEASE ADVISE. Looks like Apple killed the wired extension network feature and it creates conflict in the network saying - set to extend a specific network but cant find it.
When extending via wireless works great !
Anyone run into this issue and how to solve it ?
I'm watching this in 2021 and still works
Correct, when you plug them in together as long as they are both fresh setups, it will automatically ask if you want to extend in Bridge mode
+Norman Villefort I was wondering this too? Did u ever figure out if you had to toggle off your wifi to switch to the stronger signal or not ?
Doesn't work in 2023 as Apple firmware updates killed the option - at least with non-Apple networks. Trying to find the firmware to rollback to....anyone?? Thx
Hi, the status for my time capsule states "internal disk needs repair". Any idea how to fix this? thanks
Can I have an extended wired network with the same password and network name?
how do you set access time for wifi to 1pm to 1am.. so on weekends the wifi goes off at 1am.
thanks!
Will it work the same way if your main router isn’t an Apple product but the extender is?
I am so glad that I found your videos! Thank you.... Home networking "How-To's" videos would be so appreciated.
Created a new channel for my How-to's. Check out my GeekSmart channel.
Asus mesh system works great too
I picked up one for $50 used. It seems fine. Nothing crazy but fine.
Are all of your routers connected via wires to the modem? Say I want to set up a router downstairs in my basement, if my modem and setup is upstairs would I have to literally wire a cord all the way from my upstairs modem to my basement? Is that what you did with the different rooms and routers? Thanks great video!
Wondering the same 😶
No, you can also do a wireless extension. Check out my video on my GeekSmart channel, I show how to do both types.
9 mins in the video should help you
this can work with Airprint plug printer cable at back of the Airport.
I really like your video but I have a question: Are you SURE that "extending" your network in this manner is actually using your ethernet as the backhaul rather than the 2 Airports just talking to each other wirelessly? Looking at Apple's own documentation on the matter, is sounds like the only way to take advantage of utilizing the ethernet connection is to setup a "roaming network" (having each airport create it's own network, but setting the SSID's/password to be the same) - which is very different than extending the network: support.apple.com/en-us/HT202056
Based on what I'm reading, extending seems to be wireless only, and therefore subject to a huge performance decrease.
It's not nearly as slick as a true "mesh" style network (Eero, Luma, Ubiquiti, etc) but it does work reasonably well)
Anyway, the fact that it's smart enough to do all the work for you is really cool.
+Alex Craig absolutely correct!
great info, I was wondering the benefit of hard-wiring(ethernet) vs extending wireless. I'd sub your channel. Thanks for the detail!
thanks for figuring all that out dude!
Can I use this as a bridge for my 2002 iMac G4 800MHz? The G4 has the old AirPort card.
Can I extend the wifi signal connecting the airport extreme to the company router? The question is because my brother wants to keep the company's router and I have the AirPort Extreme doing nothing so I want to extend the wifi signal to the basement. Thank yo!!,
+Fernando Ramirez yes, you can do that. It would be a WiFi repeater most likely, but it depends on the setup.
What do you suggest, if you also have phone service through Comcast? We have a new Arris modem and the Apple Airpot Extreme.
+sc3140 Arris or Motorola Modem and a solid router. There are plenty, Apple, eero and Linksys are my current Go To routers
+Luke Fritz when you setup to "extend" your network, that is exactly what it has always done
Thank You
Hi Brian I have done something very similar my question is wireless client some have different numbers
Also I have 3 extrems and2 expresses only one is wireless should the wired device's have the wireless client and number next to them . It allbseamsto be working ok but can I make It work even better by doing some small changes
Thanks
@techgooch. Its 2021 are you still using this setup or did you update? thanks!
Thanks for this detailed and helpful video.. It helped me a lot how to set up my network with the airport extreme ...
You're welcome!
How is the heat in the new shape ones, I have three of the old flat style and they run so hot. Thinking of upgrading to the new one. As you have one of the old style, would say 1, New runs cooler. 2, is it worth upgrading. My network is solid and I to hard wire the base stations together like you do.
I don't have any heat issues at the moment
You’re amazing! Wizardry at its finest!
Hey Can You Help Me Setup My Time Capsule As Not A Router But As A Extender Of My Network, I’m Using A Netgear N600 Cable Modem/Router & Hooked Up My Time Capsule, & Just Want To Use It As A Network Extender
I want to do the exact setup, but through powerline networking. Will that work as well? I don't see why not, but want to make sure.
+smittyboy007 absolutely
Can i extend my wifi using an Airport Time capsule to an almond wifi extender..having problems w/ that being I'm using an Eatel cable company router(time capsule hard wired to router lan) PLEASE HELP so i won't have to spend another astronomical & obscene amount of money on another apple airport extreme, express & etc.
+David Serrano you should be able to, just by running it as an Extender of your router
thanks, fond out i had to do an update....on my almond that is.
Great tutorial! I'm purchasing an airport time capsule for back-up purposes. I currently have an airport extreme as my router with an airport express as an extension. Any suggestions which airport I should use as the base station (extreme vs time capsule)?
+Chad Roth I would use the fastest router as the main unit. As the time capsule is the newest, that is what I would use.
+brian hanger AirPort Extreme are wireless AC, express are only wireless N
Can I extend the network wired and wireless? Looking for ways to extend my network for both wired and wireless solution. I have 2Airport extreme and one express. Currently I have 3 different SSCD's but wanting to have just one SSCD. this way I can have one wired network through the house and one wireless SSCD. So, when I'm on iPad it'll just be on one wireless SSCD. Is this possible with your set up? Thanks
+Law W yes, wired and wireless with only one SSID
Thanks in advance
Have a great day!
+Clinton W Salvato you can definitely use multiple AirPort extremes, and yes it would ensure you keep the faster AC connection.
