Everyone knows Guthrie is amazing. Not just his virtuosity on his instrument. His writing/musicality. My favorite guitarist ever. If you haven't, listen to his solo album Erotic Cakes.
1 TGiuntaC I just did and it’ll be the last time. Did nada for me. A bunch of “look how badass I can shred” uninteresting shit. Guthrie shreds with more musicality and feel than anyone I can think of. Stay in your Lane Shawn, you’re not in the realm of double G.
I can't understand how a human can play with such profeciency. Never making a mistake. Just perfect control of all the phrases. It's the right hand accuracy that just amazes me
Total Meltdown- Surgical precision- Great Feel - Sweet Tone- Crazy Hair- Thumping rythm section - Dynamic - Innovator - Guitar Guru - Mind-Boggling speed - and a sense of humour - I could listen to this stuff all night! Way to Go GOVAN !!!
I'm amazed every time. His playing sounds like a machine that was granted a human soul to play the dopest music possible and not be restricted by technique. The speed changes so darn fast but it still sounds so clean, he's a great inspiration.
Still come back to watch these tone merchants videos all these years later. I was lucky enough to be taught by Guthrie around this era when he was one of the teachers at Brighton Institute of Modern Music. I still firmly believe that in terms of his versatility, he was (or still is) probably one of the best in the world. He had it all: tone, style, creativity, speed, amazing technique, etc.
In fairness, Guthrie and frank are on similar levels, just in different styles. Guthrie is rock with a hint of jazz, Frank is jazz with a hint of rock. Franks playing would definitely fit over this better, although in fairness to Guthrie I feel like this was much below his normal standard of playing
@y m; this video is at least 15years ago! Chick Corea and "Return to Forever" originated "Spain" with Al Demeola on electric guitar 🎸. Also a maestro shredder from my hometown.
@beatallica so right! it's probably because hes super varisatile (spelled correctly..?) and he's playing is so fluence and ease with he's superb fingers
Guthrie is amazing. Check out Jack Thammarat..... there's always somebody breathing down your neck. That's why you gotta do it for the love and exploration of it.....
@TheTranslator100 three of my fav players: Bireli, Sylvain Luc, and Guthrie, and I like them equally for different reasons, bireli for his genius outside phrasing and jazz creativity in general, sylvain for his ridiculously tasty and crazy lines that can make me weep out of nowhere, and guthrie for his sheer rock soul and passion in fusion context, his musical vocabulary and versatility
>Hears version of Spain that is a million times better than I could ever be. >Starts crying and shitting in diaper. >Opens comment box and starts saying it isn't jazz or as good as it in order to make myself feel better.
@hellookelly I'm not saying that he is actually at the same level of the gypsy masters. But I could bet a million that you'd be highly entertained and pretty happy if you watch him playing it someday. I'm a die-hard fan of gypsy jazz and I enjoyed what Guthrie played. I have a video of him demonstrating what he gets about this style, but I can't publish online.
RIP Chick Corea. Most likely he approves and would have wanted to record something with Mr. Govan. These are the kind of cats that are way beyond the fundamentals of their instruments and just think in music.
@TheTranslator100 You know, Wes Montgomery was known to dial in some gain and scoop some mids and shred some serious metal on his L-5. Look it up, it's some really djent inspired playing, sort of like Tosin Abasi minus 2 strings.
There's a quote of Fur Elise from 1:06 to 1:10
2:09 - 2:10 Ironman
Wow....great observation
ZuoCruz YEAH!
Yes!
If you listen carefully at 2:24 you can hear 'spain'

Jordan Lombardo “Waves” is my jam!

@@AntwhaleNearfar yeah exactly, Guthrie is one of the very few shredders who is still musical at those incredible speeds

It is actually mind blowing, literally…
It's like wanking just let your foreman go with the beat 😅

14 years later, so unbelievably good
This guy can teach you how to play a C chord on guitar for sure
I know what u mean😄
For suhr
Ha ha for sure
Is that all 🤣
I find there are a thousand lessons to be drawn from his demonstrations
I'm amazed every time. His playing sounds like a machine that was granted a human soul to play the dopest music possible and not be restricted by technique. The speed changes so darn fast but it still sounds so clean, he's a great inspiration.
C'mon, every single video from Guthrie is mindblowing. Give me a break.
I'm convinced he's not human
This. I have never seen him perform poorly
IKR!
fantastic, brilliant, almost RISKY!!! Those notes out of scale... what a pleassure to my ears...
LOL that Fur Elise quote at 1:06 😂
Love how he drops in Fur Elise and Iron Man randomly Guthrie is a Genius
what part

One of the best electric guitarists ever playing a piece by one of the absolute best musicians in history. Awesome.
Guthrie is scary good, and totally inspiring.

Omg it guthrie govan playing spain
How is Guthrie playing guitar and bass at the same time 😮
hehe ... like a tween
It's his brother on the bass :)
it's Seth Govan his brother
And how is the saxophonist playing drums and sax at the same time?
HAHAHAHA
govan OP nerf pls
he's like the absolute hacker in the guitar sim videogame :P
amazing performance of Guthrie
He makes so many references to classic songs and gives that hint and then snatches it away toying with the listener!
I find that a bit annoying and silly.

Simply the best... Feeling & technic. That makes me shiver. GG Rocks!
As much as I absolutely love Guthrie in all his amazing wisdom, Frank Gambale really does shine somewhat on this one
Well Frank Gambale is also from another universe sooooo
Can't compare Frank Gambale with this guitar player.

I was not aware of him, but he is a very talented guitarist- I enjoyed this, and the group as well!
I hope in the year that's passed since this comment you've come to realise he's possibly the greatest guitarist of all time. good day :)
From 2:07 to 2:11 there's an Iron Man reference as well as the Beethoven one earlier on. xD
Good lord I’ve watched this video countless times over the last few years and never caught the Sabbath reference! Good ear!
most excellent feel my man Guthrie- great jam! Nice crossovers and tasty variety of flavors! Refreshing version of the 'standard!'
1:40 heads start exploding for awesomeness
Brilliant playing!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Saw him at guitar shows can't take it away from him brilliant and seems like a really nice bloke 👏
Great solo! Guthrie is amazing.
This fellow is a terrific player! I'm a fan.
The amazing Chick Corea n his compositions, RIP.

Did anyone catch the fur Elise quote?
Would love to see the full song. Amazing.
Outstanding!!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I notice all the negative comments on this video are about how Guthrie isn't cookie cutter enough lol.
Boo hoo.
Wooooow!!! GREAT GUITAR PLAYING!!!!!

Am I the only one hearing a sublte reference to Für Elise on that lick at 1:06? :D ...goddamn Guthrie is great!

I love that "For Elise" phrase addaptation! from 1:06 to 1:12
If i got to see guthrie do a jam with chick id probably cry
What are the chord that guthrie played at 0:02
Imagine how much better he is now...16 years later !
Someone said Guthrie misses harmony when playing fast runs in a comment. Well i don't see that happening anywhere 😂
It will come !
