Good to hear you'll try! Cleaning these up was pretty straight forward. I did have to get all the corrosion off some of the metal contacts with a light abrasive paste (baking soda) so those simple switches would work properly. You'll probably be okay using a flathead or some other screwdriver that very firmly connects with the corners and doesn't slip. They're just tapped into the plastic so there's very little torque involved. Unless someone got too enthusiastic at the factory when they were installed!
So happy the one you repaired is the exact same one I'm going to try and fix tonight. I bought one online out of nostalgia, and yep, battery is gone. So I got a triangle-tipped screwdriver from a friend, and am gonna grab the battery tonight and hope I can save the game. Great vid!
I have the monkey one and it's still got the original battery in it in 2023 which is 20 years after its dated on the back. It still works too, but it's on the fritz. I guess that not surprising after 20 years 😂😅
cool games, I like them and they have to be posted in the archive which cannot be thrown away because it needs a game library to play the games and play them on Android and iPhone
Yea, unfortunately this style of games analogue in its nature. Although I suppose you could emulate the IC and replicate the physical nature of the display in software.
Hey man thank you so much for making this video! I thought I was the only person who who was trying to repair one of these things as it was a big part of my childhood but I always kept it😅! Anyways have you ran into any problems after with weird off brand batteries leaking?
Hello, Have you replaced the battery for the sonic game? I'm trying to do that now without damaging the plastic it's in. Do you have any advice? It's pretty snug in there. Thanks.
If you need reference pictures try the linked article and image gallery. Looking them over again I don't recall an issue with the cleanup and replacement.
Hello I bought new batteries to replace the one in my tails game, like you did. But it only works for a few seconds with a very light picture and the beep sounds is awful 😅 The silver part had rust or so on it and I cleaned it with baking soda like you recommend. Unfortunately it's still not working :( I'm not sure if it's the fault of the batteries. Bought them right out of the store but 1 battery tester says it's almost empty another says its ok Do you've and tips?
I have a few of these and tried to replace the batteries after watching this video. I ended you breaking one, wasn’t to big of a deal as these are pretty cheap on eBay but it was difficult.
A bit of baking soda and vinegar with a q-tip or similar. Make sure the battery is out first; also, you want to make sure that you don't get the solution into the electronics. What you're doing is neutralizing the battery acid and rubbing it with a light surfactant (baking soda) to get the corrosion off.
There should be a special place in hell for somebody who designs a battery placement like this.
And for those who put triangle screws
Thank you for this! I quite like Big's fishing and now I know how to replace the battery!
Awesome! I actually had a game speed problem with one and shot a short on fixing it. Which should be coming up barring camera goofiness :).
Thanks for this. 👍 I have a couple of these in need of replacement batteries. Doesn't look too complex other than the triangle screws.

Good luck! I do still pull these out occasionally to play.

I'm trying to change the batteries on mine, glad you made this video. Thanks!
Ah! Awesome. I didn't actually expect anyone to have one... they are pretty neat.

All primary cell batteries can leak. The only way to prevent it is to not leave them in long term.
Thanks so much!!
Thanks! I've got to dig into these neat little machines again. Those batteries are a pain.
Nice vids dude
Thank you!

Check the batteries with a multi-meter. What you're describing sounds like a dead battery.
@@PCBurn sorry for the late reply, had to get my hands on one. It measures 1,52-1,54 on both batteries

The plastic is getting a bit aged on them by now too.
Hello! What do you use to clean the contact of the battery? Thanks

It would be nice if you could show us how to clean the corrosion with the baking soda.
I'll make a video of corrosion cleanup once I get the new workshop set up.
Hello, what size is the triangular screwdriver?
Oddly enough, they're on the bench again. Let me check... my triangle bits marked 2.5 and 2.3 appear to fit.
Lleva una lamina de metal avajo de la bateria si se rompe como la reemplazo amigo?
Yes, if I'm reading that correctly you could probably replace the battery holder with some nickel battery strap or a scrap piece of battery holder.
Just wondering what's the tip you used to remove the screws, tia
It's the triangle drive from.a large security set.. I'll have to crack out the game again and take a look which one.
It's a triangle 2.3 bit.
I was able to use a T7 torx bit from a Husky 8-in-1 set without any damage to the screws.
Es el contacto hay donde va la bateria 1.5v lr41
Yes, it's listed in the linked article.
Que es eso donde va la bateria del juguete? Es una lamina de metal? Se puede reparar
its a finite state machine. Not much more then some combinational logic and registers.
Yea, it's an old design. Slightly less complex than the Tiger handhelds from the 80's, too.
@@PCBurn Forgot to mention counters. Those are REALLY handy. Especially when your driving an lcd and keeping track of the enemy states.
