Abundant Vegetable Harvests | Planting Garlic | Wild Boar Damage

- Plantic garlic for an early summer crop.
Wild boar caus a lot of damage on the farm, but we Havest winter squash. beans, peppers and our first pomegranates in the vegetable garden.
We need your help with ideas and suggestions to keep these destructive animals away from our garden, before it's too late.
Garlic Confit Recipe
About 6 bulbs garlic (we used the little cloves left over from planting)
2 or 3 sprigs of Thyme or Rosemary
2 pieces of lemon peel from 1 lemon,
1 tablespoon black peppercorns
Enough olive oil to cover the cloves
Preheat the oven to 130C/110C fan ( 230 / 260F fan)
Separate all the cloves and peel.
Place the garlic cloves, a generous amount of salt (1 teaspoon) and the thyme or rosemary in an ovenproof dish and cover with the olive oil.
Make sure the garlic is fully submerged in the olive oil so it does not burn.
Roast for 2 hours.
The oil will bubble gently while it cooks.
Allow to cool, then store the garlic with the oil in an airtight container or jar in the fridge.
It will keep for at least a month.
How to use
We used some on the toasted bread shown on the table to make a delicious garlic bread.
Another evening we swirled some into creamy mashed potato, dotted the potatoes with butter, grated parmesan on top and grilled it for 10 minutes until golden brown.
Thank you
Meraid and Dan
When you said this is where we need your help. I thought you were next going to ask us to donate our urine to protect the Vegies. Lol😅
😂
😂😂
Me too! 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, I was thinking that mailing my wee from the US to Portugal might not be a very efficient solution. 📬
Merci beaucoup. 😂💩
beside unrine, Hair cutting say from a barber shop, scattered around where the boar come onto the property will carry the human scent and can stand some rain before it is washed away by rain.. Electic Fencing is often used but that can get expensive, solar charged fencing atleast does not leave you with constant energy bills. And as a last effort perhaps you could welcome hunters to the property foe a weekend. Apparently the meat is sought after for it's flavour
Well, I gave Dan a haircut before we went out on the town last night. But it all blew away. Might have to take the scissors to mine next. 😂
Keep in mind that the barber shops throw away what they cut. with so many different scents perhaps in small mesh bags scattered around, the Boars will sense a large human group in the area. Male urine or preditor unrine on something rather than on the ground will take a long time to wash away. Good luck@@NearbyVeggies
Great tip. Thank you 👍
Time to make the BACON
I eat it but not keen on making it. 😀
Love the music you selected to match the vibe. It was your harvest and that's all that matters. Next year your pomegranate tree will thrive and you will have a lovely harvest. You are learning season by season and we are learning with you.
As others have mentioned, your jumper was beautiful. I hope you let Dan's mum know how much we liked it, too. Good to see that you both look happy and healthy and life is good. Blessings.
Thank you. And thank you for mentioning the jumper. Sadly, Dan’s mum passed away a few years ago but I always think nice thoughts when I’m wearing it. 😊
@@NearbyVeggies How sweet of you to send her nice thoughts. She feels the love and everyone's appreciation. 💕💞💓
Really bright motion activated solar lights will to help deter wild boars. It’s certainly worth a try.
Sounds good. Thank you 😊
I love when you show how to cook things you grow!
Thank you ☺️
Garlic powder if boars don't like it. It might be the ammonia smell that the boars avoid, if so there's quite a few ways to create ammonia.
I'm not all that familiar with wild board, but I believe they go by scent, so something strong smelling might help.
Thank you for the tip. 👍
Thanks for sharing yet another video. As usual ur farm/garden look lovely. I enjoy watching your activities maintaining your land and enjoying ur produce. As far as the boars go, peeing on an area is not an effective repellent. Ppl resort to electric fencing mostly. However liking one of those trail cams to a speaker that reproduces gun firing or and dogs barking and human voices, has proven effective . They mostly avoid human presence.PS- lovely pomegranates!
It seems that they are most active when we get a lot of rain. Maybe because our scent is washed away 😭
@NearbyVeggies Maybe. That is a good explanation . Besides, during covid lockdown, there was no hunting. For sure, that increased their numbers. I say this, albeit i hate hunting and fishing; anything that preys on nature without a major reason, such as feeding oneself. I find hunting and fishing revulsive. To me, anyhow. To others, i can not say. Try to pool at the loud sounds of shooting n dogs and ppl talking. If u can find a way to activate a recording every time ur trail cam identifies boars. All other research i did sounded less promising. Especially during rain season. BTW how was the dinner and concert? Hope u guys enjoyed it!
Lovely crop of veggies.😊
Thank you so much 😊
I’m always amazed with your knowledge of plants and how to properly plant them. Your awesome
Thanks so much 😊
I like your garden, it reminds me of my childhood ....well done you ❤
Thank you 😊
Love the sound of the church bells. I always enjoy your videos. No wild boars or deer to worry about here in my bit of north Wales.
We love the bells too. Sometimes they go on for ages. Some are happy and others are sad.
La chasse...Hunting !!! verry good in Ragout.
I like ragout 😊
@17:26 I love this music that you use occasionally, it is very evocative.
Thank you 😊
I know this sounds harsh but maybe harvesting them may be a good idea if there are too many they will have not enough forage area Whilest I know you won't use it all others may enjoy and come to harvest for you
Think like thinning out fruit the rest grows better
Are they a protected species in Portugal? One might not be allowed to harvest the wild boar. Good idea to look into this, and see if there are conservation agents allowed to harvest some, in order to cut down their increase.
Totally understand. Thank you 😊
I soak my garlic in the water in a refrigerator for a few days and they pop out really nice after that
Excellent. Do what works. We don’t do anything beforehand and that works for us. 👍
Hi, what a beautiful bounty of vegetables. Good luck with the boars. Stay well.
Thanks, you too 😊
Harvest, beautiful music and a rainbow ❤
Thank you 😊
What about a solar charged netting electric fence, which is portable. Enjoy your vids, looking forward to house Reno
Thank you for the tip. We will look into all suggestions. 😊
Boar have thick hide. It won't deter.
Hi we had a similar problem with the Boar destroying my veg garden garden they entered from one corner under the fence of the property. This could be totally mad but someone told me to put those six litre water bottles you buy in the supermarkets half full with water laying on their side.. It actually seamed to work. as they did not enter the property where the bottles were after that. I tried the pee.. it didn't work. Good luck
That’s interesting. Thank you 😊
What a gorgeous harvest! And I love your jumper Meraid! You look stunning in it! How did the pomegranates taste?
We’ll show the pomegranates soon with our reaction and thank you for the jumper compliment. It’s a lovely cosy woollen one that Dan’s mum knit. 😊
Amazing harvests for November! It's like going to the Greengrocer's, you grow such a wide variety of vegetables and fruits. The size of that Galia Melon in your basket! Did it taste sweet? And how were the pomegranates? 😋 💚🌿
We’ll let you know how the pomegranates went soon 😋 That melon was a watermelon. Not as sweet as we’d like. I wonder if you noticed how many blossoms were on our little loquat tree 😉
@@NearbyVeggies Oooh exciting! 😅🧡🧡
You can also check with the locals in your area when the hunting season 😊
Agreed. We have many states here in the US where the wild boar r destroying the land. They use big traps. But hunting works best.
Not many hunters seem interested in wild boar here, at least not those we’ve spoken to.
Thank you
@NearbyVeggies WOW...how imrs change.
Rabbits and pheasants is what they were hunting
Wild boars are sensitive to scent and sound/noise. According to some Dutch websites anyway. So you might keep them away by sprinkling human hairs around (a new haircut for Meraid😉), hanging plastic bags at the perimeter making nasty sounds in the wind, or plastic flags of bright and reflective colors. Or, make bacon yourself as some people suggested☺️.
I cut Dan’s hair on Saturday but it blew away in the wind 💨 Maybe we should visit the barber for some ☺️
I’ve seen plastic bags around some farms but I don’t feel it’s a solution that would be for me. Thank you for some great suggestions, Peter. It’s a lot of bacon for me to eat alone 🤣
The vegetables look amazing and some tantalizing references to the food you eat, perhaps you could share the recipes.
Any particular recipe you would like? I can add into the description if you let me know. 😊
I am a vegan so those soups/stews with lots of beans sound delicious. But every time you mention some meal I always think well I could modify that just omit the meat.
We never make anything with meat because Dan is a vegetarian. 😂
In my aunt small village, near Viseu, people kind of surrendered to the boars 'plague' and decided to have a different approach: they would leave food for the boars in the forest to keep them there and for what I heard it worked all right up to the middle of summer... And bleach on the ground
What a great way to approach the challenge. Thank you for sharing that story. I’ll not bother with the bleach, though 😊
Hello you two!
OMG those porcini I huge.
That is good harvesting.
Wild boar... Are they good for eating?
BTW can you hunt them (or other animals) in Portugal?
Well, I do not know for boars, but I remember my uncle on the farm in Québec when I was a kid. He would leave an old dirty sweaty jacket on a low branch or post, rain or shine and move it around, wearing it on occasions.
Cheers,
a
Boars are very good eating.
You can hunt boar in Portugal if you have all the licenses.
I was wondering how long your magical boar-free period would last! We put our veggies in high, metal-sided raised beds, which helps, but would be prohibitive for the amount of veg you are growing (although maybe would help for those closest to their path.) Last summer a local wine grower told us that a way to deter them from destroying the ripening grapes was to soak string in cheap perfume and hang the strings around where the boars enter the vine area. We tried this, but were too late setting it up and they had already done a lot of damage. So... not sure how much it helped! But it is an idea.
Thank you for an interesting idea. We have always had wild boars on the land but they are getting too close for comfort now 🤭
We have a lot of them in Texas I hate to say… rifles and traps…
Thank you. 😊
High speed lead works wonders on wild boar😉.
A fence dear heart, a good strong fence that is electrified
Thank you 😊
So many lovely veggies! 😍Looking at those fresh fava beans made me think of Portuguese fava bean stew, with chourico and cilantro. Yummy! Enjoy your harvest! 🤗
Sounds great! 😊
nice.
Thanks 👍
Your garlic looks big. In UK at least on my plot the 😊harvest was dismal this year, so I had to purchase some more bulbs and hope that next year will be better for us.
I had to buy a few extra after our first harvest too. It takes a bit of time to get your own really big bulbs but keep growing and it will happen. ☺️
Mouth waters with all that goodness 🌺
So good 😊
Thank you 😊
Do elaborate on confeit of garlic in a future video, please.
I put the recipe and how we used it in the description. :-)
@@NearbyVeggies Nice. I did not even check because it was such a short mention in the video.
@kassy6373 you weren’t the first to ask so I added it later 😋Thank you for asking about it because it helps us learn what you and others might like 👍
Fabulous harvest… would love to see what you do with it all, whether cooking or freezing …would be interesting 🥰🥰🥰 thanks for sharing, I just love your channel 😘
We show a little bit about what we make and preserve. we bought a freezer only recently.
As a curiosity, here i the French Alps, people use 'favas' (green young ones), as an aperitive (pealed, and wrapped in 'dry ham' (?), you know, the ham you put to dry, on the cellar.). It has a great 'greeny' taste!
ps I miss Portugal so much...Love that land and the people in it! Take care!
Great tip! I’m going to try that. 😊
I’m getting a yearning… ❤
What do I need to do next to make you yearn even more? Also, we have a cure 😂
Great seeing you both again, but don’t forget to take a break.
We did. 😊
Your videos are always relaxing but also inspiring!
I have been a vegetarian for many years, and I don't even kill snails, but I'd be asking around the village if anyone has a hunting license. Boars have become a problem in many places here, and now there are too many and they are really hungry (deer too). They have started to go into towns more and more and people are being injured. Wolves were hunted to extinction in Japan and boar have no natural predators now the old-timers don't hunt.
A friendlier, short term solution might be to ask a neighbor with a male dog to go walking in your woods, or borrow a doggo and walk him yourself. A male that will mark his territory. I'm guessing boars would stay away from dog smell. If the dog goes potty in the woods, it will last longer than a No. 1 and won't wash away in the rain. Electric stock wire with a solar panel is the next step, but will cost, and you'll have to be careful of your neighbor's goats (and him!).
Thank you so much for the tips 😊
Lovely vlog guys! Was looking forward to you cooking with some of those vegetables. You teased us with the stew info. Really enjoy seeing fresh food picked and cooked. Are your house permissions fully there yet?
We did share a short clip of the stew 😊All permissions and permits are in place now. It’s raining cats and dogs here for over a month.
I am a little behind (but catching up). Maybe a small electric fence running on a solar panel would keep the boar out. It would require a bit of investment, but better than losing all your harvest.
We have to build a house first. We have a solution in our next video 👍
What were those red veggies you picked? Bigger than a tomato i think. I missed it if you said what it was. The parasols were huge!!!! Thanks for sharing. ❤
I think you mean the pomegranates (only 3). Or perhaps the Hokkaido winter squash?
@@NearbyVeggies the squash! Thanks
Thank goodness 😅
I came to ask same question but thought I would check if anyone else had already asked. I tried using google lens and it kept saying tomatoes lol I knew they weren't.
Thank you 😊
Hello! Great to see you're progressing. If I may, your 'pommegrenates' seem a little ...little to what's normal, maybe a bit early? I think that if you let them, they'll keep growing. In Portugal you can have huge big ones! Have a great day!
I might be on my way soon, to visit my family (in the North). Take care, stay warm!
You’re right. Our pomegranates are small. Maybe because our tree was in a pot before we planted it. Next year they might be bigger. The pomegranates around here are ready. Big and juicy. Some are already bursting open and birds are eating them. 😉
Eline Emeğine Sağlık bu güzel vlog ve video için kolay gelsin bol şans 👍👍👍👍
Thank you 😊
I hope you can prevent the wild boar from getting into your veggie beds!
We hope so too. Thank you 😊
Beautiful harvest. You are such a wonderful chef as well.
Wow, thank you 😊
Wow what an awesome bumper harvest in November x x x
It’s quite delightful to have so much variety from the garden at this time of year. Thank you 😊
@@NearbyVeggies I’m green with envy lol. I’m trying to grow veg for next autumn, you have inspired me to try again after a disaster last year ( didn’t try this year due to a house move) I only have a small space so going to try raised beds. Love watching your channel and look forward to your video every weekend. X x x
Keep trying. That’s half the fun 🤩
The mushrooms are amazing. I have foraged porcinis/boletus in NYC parks and made porcini white pizza with oregano and sage. What are the white gilled mushrooms? Are they edible? White gilled mushrooms always give me pause. Love your channel, so rich and edifying like the veges, beans and fruits you grow.🍅🍉🍇🍆🥔🌶🫑🥒🥬🧄🧅🍄🌰
Yes, the parasols are edible. Oh your white pizza sounds lovely 😊
Although you may not want to eat wild boar, perhaps you can give the wild boar to the needy? If allowed by the country you’re living in.😊
I eat wild boar but I can’t catch them (Meraid) 😊
Those mushrooms looked divine 😋🤤 do be careful with those "jivalis" they can be very dangerous 😮
The mushrooms are magnificent and delicious. They are huge animals indeed and not cuddly and cute. 👍
Are there cheap, solar powered, motion sensors that make a noise or give off a bright light that you could use? Or make some scarecrows? Would they work?
like a security alarm almost!? good idea
Thank you for the ideas 😊
❤❤❤
Thank you 😊
Great harvest
Thank you 😊
The only solution with wild boar is to install an electric fence with at least 3 wires. Livestock batteries are ideal
Thank you 😊
You can pee as much as you want my friend but the only way you’re going to keep pigs off your veggies is making friends with a local who Has a rifle 😢
Boar eat people too.
You’re probably right. 🥲
I don't know anything about farming, but I watch I Farm We Farm in Cavan, he is a cattle farmer. He uses a moveable wire that is attached to a battery which deters the cows from breaking through.
Thank you 😊
How the house renovation going?
As before. Slow.
I don't know anything about wild pigs, but if they don't like human scent you can maybe bring out some sweaty t-shirts near your veggie patches... I know it sounds ridiculous but what the hay?
We have plenty of sweaty t-shirts. 🤣
É uma Bênção a vossa horta 😊
Obrigada 🙏
❤
👍
I heard on another channel that old shoes left out deterred boars. Maybe they don’t like sweaty feet 😂
Dan’s old boots will have a new home now. Giving that a try today 😊
Eletric fencing powered by solar panels?
Thank you 😊
❤
❤️
Beautiful music this time. Is it portugese?
I’m thinking it was the music showing plants and sky etc. that was flamenco music which is Spanish. Thank you ☺️
We don't have a Boar problem yet in my area but I hear they are moving north. I am sure you can find a meat eater to remove your problem but left to their own that bunch will double by next year and they can clean out a garden in one night. Maybe you need a big dog for a pet lol. It will be interesting to see your attempt at protecting your veggies.
Thank you. Our neighbour has dogs and that doesn’t seem to do much 😭
What about a scarecrow with some needing to be washed or thrown out clothes on it?
After all this non stop rain, We’ve got plenty of clothes that need to be washed. We’re getting close to having to go naked. 😂
Apparently they don’t like human hair so maybe save the and put around otherwise short fencing can help
Thank you 😊
Obrigada
Escrevi a receita na descrição para si. Obrigada. :-)

Javelina (with the Spanish "j" sound) are a problem in Texas. State Parks and Wildlife suggest making sure fruit is picked up off the ground. You might try " "peg" holes under fences to avoid the need for javelina to create more holes. It is said that Javelina will generally use existing openings rather than creating new ones." Javelina, like armadillos, are grub eaters, hence the digging of ground. You can try placing chicken wire slightly under ground with bulbs beneath as they do like many bulbs, and, I would think, things like potatoes and other root crops. Keep open ground between the woods and your garden as they prefer the cover of woods. And finally these words of advice, "javelina can be very troublesome to landowners when they become habituated to homes and human activities. They often sleep in caves, and cave like areas, and seem to find the crawl spaces under homes attractive. They may cause significant damage to yards and sprinkler systems because of their habit of rooting for food." You might try planting fruit trees in the forest so that they have less reason to come into your garden area.
Thank you for such interesting information. Very much appreciated 😊
What are you going to do with all these vegetables 😊
We eat them.
It's unfortunate that you're vegetarian because there has to be some kind of equilibrium in nature. I suppose you need wolves or to call a hunter or get a hunting license yourself.
Only one of us is vegetarian. I asked some hunters what they are hunting and they said rabbits and pheasants. Nobody seems to be hunting boar which might be why there are so many. Although I had a lovely wild boar meal at Museo d’Azeite recently 😋
Electric fence will stop those wild boars or pigs whatever. and you can build an electric fence at a very small investment.
Thank you 😊
,lets in Portuguese...Uma espingarda de bala 742 Remington 3006,,,thats so you need{ e so o que precisas ou entao uma ratoeira

I think I might have killed my cloves by planting too deep.
They’ll probably be fine. Consider it an experiment 👍
You know that plowing is overrated, right? You can plant right into your cover crop. Look up Gabe Brown.
No plowing here, Vivalaleta 🧐
@@NearbyVeggies (hoeing is small plowing)
@vivalaleta Ah, I understand what you mean now. We’re loose and free with gardening. We do what we feel works and we never use chemicals. Garlic doesn’t like competition and we didn’t plant a cover crop.
