  • With 1 week to go before we start rebuilding and restoring our abandoned stone house in Central Portugal, we clear out the dust, rubble and wood.
Of course, we carry on creating our gardens.
Thank you for supporting us by continuing to watch, comment and share our videos.

Thanks for sharing another video with us. Itnis very hard work forbu guys. Seems like u don't have the chance of a single day off. I am eager to see the end result in a few months time. The cleaning in a construction yard is never ending. It prevents potential accidents. I feel happy seeing the way u connect with the land. All those deserted places in Portugal need and deserve people like you that connect to the land and revitalise it. Btw, loved the Mozart!!!

It is starting to come together now and you can see how sturdy the old walls are. It must be difficult to get so much “advice” from internet experts who are not there, do not have the full picture or advice from local architects, planning officers, experienced local builders (who are used to working in these buildings) keep it going it looks like you could be moving quickly once the rubble has been cleared and the working site is ready for construction. Well done and great positivity from both of you👍🏻

Can I respectfully suggest that you use natural hydraulic lime when rebuilding the walls and lime plaster for the interior walls? This will allow the building to breathe. You could also use limecrete for floors etc. It's really easy to use, very forgiving and healthier! Regardless you are doing a great job!

Doesn't seem futile at all to keep the aira clear, it makes sense really to have that area clear of debris to have a space to direct materials.
Been super admiring your work aling side the demo guys to sort the reusable wood from the burn pile wood. It makes it easier to clear out debris in the long run and to have a clear work space.
Wow, Dan, you're a really good wood chucker. And, Meraid, thanks for explicating why the walls need to be taken apart so that they can be rebuilt with proper mortar to withstand the elements.
It alsogood watching the digger pull out rubble and sort it into stones & clay and also the concrete to be disposed of offsite. It's very satisfying to see a demo/rebuild done right vs slap-dash have-a-go. It's a bit heart breaking watching others do builds over and over again bc it wasn't done well initially.

And you will have a coat for the rainy days in the garden. This is such an overwhelming project you have undertaken. I hope you can find places to store some of the left over stuff like the wood and even the rubbage at the bottom of floors. You might be able to use the rubbage for pathways or driveways. Just have to tap it down till hard.

Hi both, the magazines you found dated 1972 may have historic interest as they are dated pre revolution of 1975. Magazines like Opinião, were printed and circulated only amongst sympathisers against the dictatorship/regime. People used to hide the magazines underneath floor boards, behind furniture, and so forth. Anyone who was discovered in possession of such materials, or indeed reported as in possession of such materials, would get a visit from the Portuguese secret services (PIDE) and would end up in prison or would simply disappear. Bearing in mind, your house may have belonged to a priest or have connections to a priest as the photo you found suggests, may be extra interesting as anyone connected to the church and found with such materials would be in a great deal of bother. I would say you may have found a little treasure by finding those magazines!

So as you stated, others had commented their concern about masonary walls being removed. Perhaps I missed your overall plan for the structure ie. saving as much of it as possible. I can certainly see removing the wood and saving any that is usable. Watching the dismatling, my concern was wondering how stable the rock walls are and how the remaining can be made sound. Most look so unstable and cemented with crumbling old soil which is being disolved by rain water. One only needs to watch these kind of structures on the news and how they are easily destroyed during an earthquake. How are the old walls going to be incorperated with new construction?

I'm curious what state you will be in by the time the project is complete. It's going to task you terribly. Be of good cheer, all good things come to those that work for it.

It's going to take more than one power wash to clean the patio.

Why are they not throwing the debris into a skip? Now they'll have to rescoop it all up to clean up the lower level.

Pls ask these lovely people who are doing the renovation to wear masks. They are breathing in all that old dust. My hubby was builder for years, so I know how grt good builders are but they forget to care for lungs etc.

I'm surprised you're retaining any of the old structure at all as I think that its incredibly unstable and a coat of plaster doesn't hide the inadequacies of those walls , love the sight of rebar forbearer of good solid structures to come faced with old stone masonry to replicate ancient stone work.
