    I'm 54 years old and I just started taurine 3 weeks ago. Dosage 4g per day divided into 2g morning/2g late evening. I am simply amazed by the stuff. I feel fantastic. What amazes me most is how quickly I recover from rigorous exercise. How resilient I feel throughout the day. I really do feel like it's somehow an elixer of youth. I'm also taking Ubiquinol coq10 and I think the combination is working synergistically to improve cellular mitochondria. What a wonderful discovery in my life.

    Regarding dosing: for now I suggest 2 days of loading dose 12g/day. Any excess WILL be excreted. Then just use the maintenance dose of 5-6g/day, pretty much depending on whether you exercise tthat day or not (exercise = u can lower your dose).
    U also get some taurine from food so that counts as well. Remember, excess WILL be excreted, so it's FINE to supplement. The typical Western diet includes 40-400 mg of taurine daily. Also, if you supplement with whey protein, there is 66 mg taurine in 100 g of whey powder, so whey-based protein supplements can also be considered a somewhat small source of taurine.

    Good question re taurine in blood plasma … I’m plant exclusive and got a 40 amino acid plasma test … taurine was 58umol/L range was 26 to 132 which seems to align with the population adult range. I have decided to supplement with 4g. I was surprised that apart from taurine all other amino acids were in the top 75% of range. (Labcorp / lofeestension offer the test).

  • @peterz53

    mmmm... Well, amino acid panels have ranges which I presume are derived from a population of people much like other reference ranges are. But... Prof. Yadav said that excess taurine, such as the increase due to exercise, is excreted, and I assume that transient increases due to supplements would also be excreted. Half life in plasma seems to be short, on the order of an hour. He also said we don't know the healthy range, while also saying that higher levels was "associated" with better health. Higher levels within the known ref. range? Maybe taurine does it's thing, whatever that is, during it's transient increase. Seems reasonable to test my levels and at least try to assure I'm not in the lower part of the range. I started taking 500 mg daily about 10 years ago after seeing research which indicated that it Mg as well) increased circulating endothelial progenitor cells. Taking 500 mg twice a day now. Tesitng soon....

      Hi Peter, thanks for sharing your thoughts. It is a good point and Dr Yadav did not directly answer my question which was how good a proxy is the serum levels to levels in the cells. My understanding is that taurine is present in the cells in high concentrations (Dr Yadav mentioned millimolar quantities earlier in the call) so I am not sure that it is like a drug which has impact while it is in the system but then gets cleared. This was the basis for Dr Baur's point about allosteric conversion, I think. Please let us know how it goes!

Also looking at your list now take 20 to 30 supplements each day - no issues with this many and as more info comes out could be maybe needing to take 30 to 60 per day. Is there a limit for you? Dr Vijay is fantastic I like his easy going style while displaying profound knowledge about the subject. Of course Richard's meticulous style is also great.
    The percentage of life extension in mice looks fantastic, but do those mice exercise? Are they healthy in that sense? Would the Taurine level in wild mice be higher and perhaps decline less with age? So how much of that 10 to 25% increase in lifespan is because of the "life style" of the mice? Same goes for the lab monkeys. and of course, modern humans (which have a life style similar to lab monkeys). The same goes for that other wonder food GlyNac. Glutathione also increases with exercise. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17925621/
    We humans evolved in the wild. We did not evolve in a chair watching tv, or typing on our laptop. So, nature or the universe must be thinking that we have fallen of cliff and can't use our limbs properly. Consequently, it down regulates everything to kill us of quickly so we can make space for healthier individuals. At least that's is my latest armchair theory. 😉

    • @ModernHealthspan
      @ModernHealthspan  Год назад

      Hi Steven, thanks for your kind comments and thoughts. The confounding factors of lifestyle are important and difficult to tease apart. Do the mice get running wheels in their cages? How engaging is their environment? RCT's have the clearest result but inevitably introduce artificial constraints. Have to take each piece of evidence and weigh its value.
      I see things in a similar way to you. We evolved to live to 35 or so and after that it is not that our historic environment becomes irrelevant but following what is natural is no longer sufficient. We need to go beyond that, because as you say, nature does not care about us anymore (and may be actively trying to remove us as resource consuming entities!)

    Since taurine is cheap and appears to be safe I have started taking it. However, when I started with taking 6 g a day, it gave me flatulence with a sulfuric stench straight out of hell. Did anyone else have that particular problem? I reduced it to 3 g a day and now it is fine. My guess is that my body couldn't absorb so much taurine so that my gut microbes ate the rest producing this very unwelcome side effect.

    Taurine increase LDL?

    • @ModernHealthspan
      @ModernHealthspan  Год назад +3

      Hi thanks for your comment. No, it is an association not a causation, so higher levels of taurine were associated with higher LDL. This works both ways of course (something that Dr Yadav made clear). We cannot attribute the cause of the healthy attributes to taurine but neither can we attribute the less healthy. We can only say that they are associated (higher with higher, lower with lower). Also higher levels of hypotaurine were associated with lower LDL - so not clear what this means (which is why I asked the question)

      Hi Abu Wahab, thanks for your question. I cannot offer advice but I did find some comments on the internet that say the two should not be taken together as taurine interferes with lithium metabolism, with the effect of leaving the lithium in the system for longer. This may be referring to lithium taken for bi-polar disorder where the dose is in 100's of milligrams rather than supplementing, where the dose is typically 1-5mg. I also found some papers which said that lithium supplementation reduces taurine in the brain.

      @@abuwahabsufyan679 so many studies on benefits of lithium with trace amounts in water in Texas area and showing good for brain health. As mentioned here amount of lithium is less then 1mg per day. Smokers get o.3 mg from cigarettes and now finding this is why smokers less likely to get Parkinson’s. Taurine too good and only need maybe to 1gram per day. So take lithium in morning and taurine at dinner as mentioned here so no issues.

  • @advertiserfriendlyusername5362

    I concur with Dr. Yadav, here. 500 mg, three times a day (i.e. 1.5 g/day) has been used to lower blood pressure. Higher doses have been studied for antioxidant, lipolytic effects, or to improve the lipid profile. Doses as high as 2 g, three times a day, i.e. 6 g/day, are used for improvements in athletic performance and to treat heart failure.
    It's probably above my pay grade to decide whether allometric scaling is a good way to convert doses across species. Or indeed, if lab rodents are good models for testing interventions meant for humans. I just want to say that when he arrives at the range of 3 to 6 grams per day for humans, it's a good estimate and it makes sense to me, because these doses are already being researched or in therapeutic use today.
