  • Here is a short video on how I built a violin using techniques from the past.
Underneath the video, you hear music played using this violin and other bowed string instruments I made. This music is also available on cd and on Spotify as "Project Boussu - Brussels Trio Sonatas" (Et'cetera Records, 2020).
Longer videos are available on the RUclips channel "Boussu_Inside_Out".

Here I thought I was an amazing character because I can juggle three balls and do some prestidigitation, but to see a true master of a craft, such as you are, is a great experience to watch. Thank You.

Dear Orville, thank you very much for your comment. Your kind words are highly appreciated. To be honest, I've always been astonished by people being able to juggle with balls, so everyone can do something that other people enjoy and and get inspired from. But it is good to read that you enjoyed watching the video! Thank you for visiting the channel & have a nice day!

That's the first time I've seen that method of attaching the neck to the body. I like it, thanks for posting.

Dear newtsfarm, thanks for your kind reply. The video shows a way of making that is no longer widely used by violin maker. But I wanted to try it, and share my experiences through this channel!
      Best regards, Geerten

I am sure this is sped up, as in skipped pieces. It is still quite nice.

Indeed, only some short fratments are shown. It takes around 10 hours alone to varnish a violin...

    Where did you study?

Hi Simone, thank you for your reply. I first started making on myself, and then studied some years at CMB Puurs, Belgium. I later continued to study instrument making at the Conservatory of Gent. Please note that the methods in this video are performed for purpose of research. Of course there are other ways of making a violin (like with inside mould), that I also used in the past.
If you are a violin maker, where did you study?
      Best regards, Geerten

@@Boussu_Inside_Out you're very kind as usual, yes i remember your phd project and the particular way of builing there istruments, i would like to study violin making and i asked because i'm trying to decide the school

Simone, there are many schools in Europe, like in Cremona, Mittenwald, Mirecourt, some in the UK, and also in Belgium (Puurs, Gent). Also in other parts of the world, like the US. They all differ in program, depending on the philosophy of the school and curriculum. Some put the emphasis on learning one method, in order to train the student to have his/her own workshop and build commercially. Others are more focused on research and diversity of knowledge and skills. But in all cases, all those aspects are there, it's just the balance that is different. So, when selecting a school for yourself, it would be best to read and compare all the online information that is available on the school's website. And talk to makers, former students, etc., to learn about their experiences. Good luck in selecting the right school!
