- It’s the law: when a school bus is stopped with its flashing red lights, traffic in both directions must stop. The safety reasons are obvious. In some jurisdictions, failure to abide can land you behind bars. And that’s exactly where some frustrated parents would like to see the people they’ve been filming as they rush past their kids’ buses. Inside Edition’s Chief Investigative Correspondent Lisa Guerrero takes a closer look at this important safety issue.
I cannot imagine the pain and heartbreak of losing 3 children all at once...like that's your entire family right there.
You go from having a family, to only having your spouse in a matter of minutes.
The fact that the siblings all went up together. Rest their inncoent souls.
The worst part is ( look up that tragic story) that bus parked on a busy street where the kids had to cross in an unconventional way... parents REPEATEDLY told the school district for YEARS to move the bus stop into the subdivision (rural area)... and like ALL school districts.. nothing was done about it until those 3 children lost their lives just trying to go to school.

as a high school bus student, its crazy how drivers act so careless when they don't follow the rules. Theres been many times when other students almost get hit.

I’ve never seen a bus stop take more than 1 minute tops. So the fact that some people can’t wait 30-60 SECONDS to save a child’s life is infuriating.

I'm also really impatient, but I always SLOW THE DUCK DOWN if I see children when I'm cruising around on my SCAG Cheetah.
I'm also a lot smaller then a car, and I have a 360 deg view because it's a ZTR, yet I'm much more responsible than these idiots doin' 30 past ducking schoolchildren.

No we have to be honest. I’ve been at a stop for upwards of 20 mins. It was for a disabled kid but still, the delays can be real.
We need a culture that emphasizes leaving early and expecting delays.
I hate when people do this. I've had people honk at me for stopping at the flashing lights on buses. That's a hill I'll die on. No one is making me put kids in danger.

Unfortunately this is what a “time is money” culture brings to the table: Impatience and entitlement to get to your destination simply because no one else’s safety and virtue is valued more than “my, me, I”.

As someone who has hit been hit by a car, due to another’s negligence, this hurts my heart, seeing innocent children hit and dying from individuals impatience and stupidity.
I hope you recovered well and the driver got some form of consequence. That sucks.

Sending love to the woman who lost her whole family to an avoidable and tragic accident :( I'm not sure why people cannot just arrive to their destination a few minutes late. I always get stuck behind buses on my way to work, but it's never that serious to blow thru a stop sign. Just be a normal person and be annoyed while you're waiting for the stop sign on the school bus to reel back in.
Because they'll get fired. The answer is to leave earlier for work, certainly not blow throw a stopped bus or be late for work. Millions of people do it right every single day.

I remember my aunt driving me to do some shopping one day when I was fresh out of highschool. We stopped at a bus and the car behind us slammed on her horn, yelling "LETS GO!" out her window. When she tried to swerve around into the other lane (driving on the wrong side of the road mind you), my aunt pulled the same maneuver to block her. Dear god I never thought the yelling would stop. We were there for maybe twenty five seconds, but the shouting made it feel like several minutes. Just stop people. It's the law...

Kudos to the last driver that said he deserved the ticket for not stopping at the bus stop sign. It's nice to see someone admit their wrong doing.
I found him obnoxious. He wasn't repentant, he was caught on camera and had to admit he was wrong, but he never said he was sorry. He made excuses: "what is he doing? he's not supposed to stop here." 🙄

@@meurumtrain4747 he went because he didn't want to wait for the bus. The bus stop sign was out. It doesn't matter if you think the bus belongs there or not; Stop sign out, you stop. He knew this and went anyway. That is the lamest excuse I've ever heard. And considering the fact that the police were waiting _because_ of the history of cars blowing past the bus, it's also a lie. There couldn't be prior incidence on this road if the bus was never on this road before.
The question is....how many times has he done it and got away with it? Will he risk it again?

$1000 first offense fine and a hefty billboard campaign would at least deter it.

The stop sign should extend out further like a good 1.5m so cars don't have the choice to go past or their car gets damaged

some American drivers have a reputation for being impatient and stubborn. they feel completely inconvenienced when having to stop behind a school bus. it’s honestly their fault if they’re running late, maybe they could’ve made it past that point before the bus got there first

@@kammmmal211 Its easy to get a license anywhere, its complacency and comfort that makes people do this. They simply don't care enough to pay attention. I've never been in a car accident that was my fault, Im a good driver, but I have blown past a stopped school bus once before because I wasn't paying attention. I kinda just forgot you're supposed to do that and I realized what I had done a few seconds after I passed it.
The US has comparatively low vehicle related deaths when you evaluate Asian countries next to it. Lol

As someone who takes the bus everyday. This has happened to me as well expect I stopped right in time just before the car could hit me. I was in shock and I just stood there for a moment not even the driver stopped to see if I was okay they just drove off, ever since that day I’ve been having trouble crossing the street it’s kinda embarrassing considering I’m 15 but I’m getting there
I'm in Australia but I didn't know that was a thing buses did. Always thought it's up to the kids to find a way safely across roads just like anyone else.
The kids aren't supposed to cross the road. If the kids have to cross a road at their stop there is a massive problem with their bus stop.
@@peaceable263 yeah now that I remember there were parents waiting at my stop when I was really young, we had to cross the road but that's why parents would gather outside the apartment complex area. This little girl went to cross the road but was pulled back just in time, as her hand was hit by the vehicle.
Finally police do something about it. I’m sick and tired of these ignorant people who think it’s ok to risk a child’s life because of their stupid choices. I pray for the families who had to go through the bus stop tragedies. 💔
Motorcycle cops used to do this in LA and Orange County, but then stopped during Covid and don’t do it anymore.
Its also your local states attorney needs to be just as pro active. Drivers can get attorneys to negotiate a plea deal and it may never even make it to a hearing.

@Steve Fox we had a car run 8 stop arms at a school and then the car backed through half and drove out on the sidewalk. I turned in a report after route and met with the officer that had already talked to the driver. As soon as the officer said it was a confused elderly hispanic man, I knew the officer did nothing. He didnt.

I was driving the backroads yesterday and found myself behind a school bus. It stopped about 5 times and I felt frustrated but seeing those little kiddos running to get in the bus eased my frustration. I felt thankful that they had a way to get to school considering the area I was driving by. Secondly, I took a look at my GPS and realized those 5 stops only put me behind by 3 minutes. By the time I reached the main road, I was no longer behind. I made it to where I needed to be on time! In truth, I watch these videos about school buses to gain a better understanding and appreciation about the importance of stopping when the school bus stops.

they need to do this EVERYWHERE. i live in NY, and we just had a similar incident with my 4 year old neice, hit by an impatient motorcycle. this needs to be taken more seriously than trying to get illegal guns off the streets

I remember when I used to use the bus in elementary school, our bus driver was very responsible. Everytime we came to a stop, even if one kid had to cross the road, she'd grab a stop sign she kept and walked to the middle of the road like a cross guard before she let anyone else cross. I always used to think it was a bit too much be seeing stories like these makes me appreciate her fully after all these years.

This has been happening recently at my bus stop, drivers just don’t stop and speed around the bus. I hope my school district looks into it because there have been way to many close calls.
Call them up and complain. Make a video of incidents and send it to them or pass it around town on Facebook
These drivers need to be found, named, shamed, and charged.
They should also have their licenses suspended for six months.

My hubby was a school bus driver for a few years. He used to try and write down license plate numbers of cars that passed him and report them to the police.

Dude do any of them know what is one of the main important keys of driving? It's patience! Those drivers do not get it and it frustrates me. They should have their driver's license taken away for not being patient and instead ruining children's innocent lives!

i drive a public school bus and people pass my red lights almost on a daily basis. i won't open the door until i see every single car stop.
The fact that there’s a bus stop on a four lane divided highway and literally no one’s stopping speaks more horrible American urban planning than it does to the decisions of the individual drivers.
I pay attention to these busses and make sure I don’t hit no kids. Plus it is fun watching them come out and enjoy the feeling of school ending. But I think also it has gotten ridiculous with how many busses stop so frequently. I remember years back there was a few bus stops and that’s it. You got buses stopping in front of peoples homes now.
Thank you. FINALLY someone takes note that the car dependent urban planning and infrastructure of the United States is killing children. Make drivers slow down by designing safer streets and getting rid of stroads like this which encourage dangerous and excessive driving.
Plain stupid, they think they can stop a 3 or 4 lane highway 🛣 just for a bus 🚌 stop, yull should see how Pasco County is with traffic around here... No bueno at all.... Back in the days It was only a few bus stops, here in Pasco County is one every 100 feet....
@@goldenstarmusic1689 It's terrible. Car dependent urban planning/infrastructure makes things far more inefficient here than it needs to be. A lot more traffic jams than it was in the past.

The utter insanity of giving kids a false sense of security that traffic will always stop for them to cross is a nightmare. Parents should teach kids to cross roads safely, drivers should proceed with caution when passing a school bus as they do everywhere else in the world.

It's honestly sad how often this occurs. I ride the bus and people tend to not stop at all. I've had my bus driver shout at them multiple times before.

In Virginia we have cameras that take a picture of your license plate if you pass them when the lights flash red. And you get a ticket in the mail for that as well.

Bus drivers where I have lived used to stop with their buses angled access the road after a child was hit by ignorant driver who ignored a buses stop sign.

In some places they have houses along main roads with no side roads for Miles or the busses can't make a uturn on the side road so the bus has to stop on the side of the highway but still people should slow down and stop the same goes for slowing down and moving over for emergency vehicles

Exactly. I think we should be asking ourselves if making all traffic stop on such a busy road is more of a hazard.

There should be jail time and a 1 year license suspension for blatantly failing to stop for a bus. In my county the busses now all have cameras and the county sends you a $250 fine for failing to stop.

I think there should be a higher fine but that is way to harsh of a punishment for that.

I remember when I was in second grade there was a memorial tree at our playground for a student at my school. She had been hit by a college student that had gone around a bus. It's a story I've always remembered and helped me understand the weight of this law many years before I got my license

I actually got stuck behind a bus here in south central Texas yesterday and I’m happy to state that every vehicle stopped and not only that but the bus driver personally got out and stood in the oncoming lane to protect the kids with his own body so that they could cross. That is truly sad ): I remember when I was in elementary school a student was getting off the bus and the school bus stop sign was out, there was an impatient driver behind the bus and decides to go around it just to meet head on with a city police! When those red and blue lights came on that was the best thing ever! I wish people were more considerate with school busses
That happened to me but instead of pulling me over, the cop went after the guy who almost rear ended me. A bus stopping suddenly after an intersection is more dangerous than people realize. Stopping traffic is insane thing to do on busy streets where people don't even stop for right turns and if you happen to be a little car in the right lane, with a large truck about to crush your tin can...
In that situation the bus would have been hit from behind, I avoided an accident by being alert and NOT following man made laws but instead obeying the laws of physics. It's the responsibility of the kids on the bus, to watch for oncoming traffic and ONLY cross when there's no traffic.
God damn. I can't imagine what it's like to lose one child to a horrible accident, but that woman lost THREE of her children to a monster like that? I think I would actually die of heartbreak and sadness. My heart goes out to her. I hope she got lots of support from her family and community.

@Wildlife Warrior Not necessarily. You won’t forget the major steps but minor rules tend to be forgotten. Also some might not even need it so they would just have to take a test.

I think licenses should be suspended. You get a hefty ticket once and suspended license the next time!

Come on the school bus stop sign is just like a stop sign on the road the school bus always has the right of away that’s so ignorant.
That’s true but a school bus doesn’t block the entire road. It’s on the children that aren’t watching the road and on the bus driver for no waving the vehicles to stop.
I feel like ever since the pandemic started, reckless driving has been super common.
After this I’m begging my parents to NEVER let me ride a school bus again.
What makes me very upset is the fact that some of these drivers have the audacity to blare their horns at the kids and parents.😤
I watched a young boy get hit by a pickup many years ago (1975), and fortunately he was bundled up for winter and was only scared.
Drivers that violate school bus and speed zone laws should be held accountable every time to the fullest extent.
& then they still honk their horns as if it's the kids fault
It always hurts loosing a loved one. A teacher, parent or child is constantly under threat because of these types of drivers. Illegal driving can take more lives off earth. Pls drive safely and responsibly so life can keep going.
Literally my biggest fear while driving is hitting a little kid running in the road, needless to say if I see those big yellow busses I’m extra vigilant. The most selfish thing an adult can do is rob an innocent child of a life they have barely started.
Take away the licenses of these reckless individuals. Once that happens people will definitely begin to follow the rules. Make it into a law!!
Taking someone's license doesn't always stop the driving because it can't stop the disrespect for the law.
That won’t stop them from driving as a whole though. People drive on a suspended license every day.

What was he going to do when he was caught on camera and then faced with an ambush interview... he took the easy option. What about the woman who killed the 3 kids, I bet she took responsibility too, in court where it served her best interests. Do you have mad respect for her doing that

I’ve seen too many drivers pass school busses like that. Speeding in a school zone too😢 It’s disgusting
This makes me so upset because a vehicle almost ran over my little brother, who was in elementary school at the time, as he crossed the street almost giving the bus driver a heart attack. I still remember the driver’s scream and my brother’s frightened expression. He was less than a foot from being run over as a car raced by. People really need to be more careful. The thought of my brother being seriously injured or worse because of a crazy driver still bothers me.
Maybe STOP AND WAIT. Do children have no brains?

I’ve dealt with this problem all throughout high school. Cars would almost stop right in front of our driveway when I would get off the bus. Some would even blow past right before I got off. My mom would understandably get angry and called the police a few times. To see actual footage of cars running past the bus is horrible and to see cars actual hitting kids is just horrifying and gutwrenching. There needs to be a crackdown on this.
