Test: Does A Cold Air Intake Improve Performance?

  • Well'p there was only one way to get to the bottom of this soooo... we got two of the exact same cars, hired some professional racecar drivers, and had them find out who is faster.
    Pretty funny to see the results although it's about what I expected. Even if a cold air intake gave +10HP it really wouldn't be noticeable on a high horsepower car like this since that's such a small difference in terms of big power numbers.
    Cold Air Intakes WILL NOT make your car faster. Case closed.
    Racing was performed in Northern Mexico on closed roads done by racing professionals.

    Not "cold air" that's a short ram with a heat shield. Cold air would be piped further away from engine. - Just sayin..

      The Stock Box actually is a CAI, since it gets air from outside of the engine bay.

      I always believe most car stock intake is CIA as they are all positioned to get air from outside of the car and with rubber or plastic pipes it will not hit up, the best thing is to change performance filter to reduce air restrictions

    • @jmackinjersey1
      @jmackinjersey1 4 года назад +4

      @@esoghumedominic13 , That is true. However, the best thing to do is to use the stock location and route, but upgrade to a smoother and even larger, unrestricted inlet/intake system.

      Most stock boxes are cold air but the filter and tube are usually restrictive I myself have a 2013 RT 5.7, took the cold air off my truck for s&g and it gave my car an increase in power so much so that I had wheel hop. I also have an an exhaust system so that's probably why I saw better gains.

      Well I'll be dammed. I kind of agree with one of the first comments though.
      "From reading various threads on this topic (no tune CAI's), after a number of drive cycles, the factory ECU will start to adjust for the CAI and the car will make the same or less power than when stock.
      As the car detects knock, it will start to pull timing down to the low octane tables and eventually, I think you'll see that horsepower gain disappear."
      So perhaps wait a bit before you do a dyno pull and see if the ECU corrects for different airflow. Either way that's pretty cool! Looking forward to your test!

    • @AKDMB
      @AKDMB 7 лет назад +2

      I see this comment all the time. How would the tune let the intake make more power? The tune will add power in and of itself, more timing, different fueling, etc. A tune can correct for improper fueling, but this mod doesn't affect that, especially on a speed density car that runs in closed loop, where it can adjust on the fly for the fraction of a percent difference in fueling that there may be...

    • @noahvalenzuela3174
      @noahvalenzuela3174 7 лет назад +2

      a tune makes a car run better intake or not so you'll see a gain from a tune no matter what unless of course its a crap tune

    • @AKDMB
      @AKDMB 7 лет назад +1

      If the intake by itself offers 0hp, and a tune offers 20hp, then both will net you 20hp
      Intake = 0 HP
      Tune = 20 HP
      +
      --------------------------
      Intake and Tune = 20 hp
      The tune offers gains in and of itself, by increasing timing, or changing commanded fueling etc. The tune does not let the motor take advantage of the intake, all it does is correct fueling on a MAF based car when the MAF housing diameter on new intake is larger than stock. This is not a case of this, as this is a speed density based car. Even in the case of a MAF based car accounting for the intake in the tune just adjusts the airflow model to keep the car safe.

  • @07scoobywrx
    @07scoobywrx 7 лет назад +3

    Just a thought with my car (evo x) an intake mounted in the engine bay is considered a short ram intake. A cold air intake puts the filter out of the engine bay usually in the fender well wonder if it would make a difference being mounted in the fender well (colder air)

  • @kevinb2529
    @kevinb2529 6 лет назад +4

    This is not CAI vs Stock. This is SRI vs stock. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure short rams are better for low end power because of the hot air it is getting from the engine verses a true cold air intake is better for high end power. Therefore short ram will give you the same as stock but will increase torque slightly and increase mpg slightly as well. Cold air intakes will increase hp and torque by roughly 5-8? By the way for you people wondering about cold air intakes, colder air means denser air. Denser air means more power. But you have to remember to tune your ecu properly to except that denser air and distribute the air and fuel ratio correctly or else your just making the current air cooler and the same fuel is being added so nothing drastic will improve. Only slight improvements.

    Also the purple one has a front strut brace, and it is not mentioned that it has a lowering kit so i assume it does not but the blue one does. You must factor in weight and even the tire weight, rim weight, how much fuel you were carrying in both.

    • @TheDwightMamba
      @TheDwightMamba Год назад

      Indeed. A lowered car is a slicker car through the air. Never mind the variances in HP from car to car. This test only works if 2 unmolested cars equal out on the dyno and then swap in the CAI.

  • @NJ_Galactic
    @NJ_Galactic 6 лет назад +4

    it all depends on the car type, and the kind of cold air intake. Some cars benefit from it while others dont. And by the way that intake was a short ram type not a real cold air intake that goes into the fender well so youre still pulling hot air....

  • @jxbane

    There is a possibility that certain engine layouts/sizes would have increased performance gains over stock, compared to other layouts and engine sizes. A large engine like the 5.7l hemi may not gain much from a CAI bolt on. But smaller engines from 1.8l to 3.6l seem to show a bit more punch somewhere in the powerband.

  • @Mechanic618
    @Mechanic618 8 лет назад +20

    tbh, the minor difference a CAI might make would be countered by the reduced rolling mass of the smaller tires on the other car, so that might explain why they were basically identical in performance.

    • @Sp-nd6uj
      @Sp-nd6uj 8 лет назад +5

      Nope.. the explanation is that these intakes are a scam and do nothing on modern engines. The companies that make them flat out lie.

    • @Sp-nd6uj
      @Sp-nd6uj 7 лет назад +1

      +L A CMPNY not sure where you get your information but you couldn't be more wrong. These after market intakes do not provide more air flow that stock. They simply don't. Where are you getting your information from?
      Besides, the stock intake is capable of providing more air than this engine could ever consume. Who told you it couldn't? Why do you think there is a restriction here? (Btw and some point in moving up in power, the first restriction in airflow will be the heads)
      But again.. I really want to know where you've received your information? You sound like a KN commercial student lol.

    • @Sp-nd6uj
      @Sp-nd6uj 7 лет назад +1

      +L A CMPNY you can only tune in about 20 more hp on this particular engine You will get that 20 hp by allowing more fuel and air into the engine. The filter has nothing to do with it. Stock filter, aftermarket filter, hell take the filter right out and it's not going to change anything. You will have the same amount of air being vacuumed into the cylinder either way. You don't seem to understand that the stock filter has more the capacity to supply more air than the engine will ever need.

    • @Sp-nd6uj
      @Sp-nd6uj 7 лет назад

      +L A CMPNY wow.. Lol. Uhmmm.. Ok. I'll leave you with your own thoughts then.
      If want to talk, please let me know how many cfm of air this engine uses to make 485 hp? Then tell me how much air the stock filter is capable of flowing? How many cfm's of air is required to make another 100hp? Another 200hp. You don't seem to understand that the stock filter has way more capacity than what the cylinders could ever draw in! You simply don't understand any of it because you don't have the numbers. Anyway.. can't teach someone who isn't willing to learn. I'm done.

    • @LA-st6dq
      @LA-st6dq 7 лет назад

      +Sp 485 Air intakes make sense when you have an engine (like upgraded) that needs more air to produce the maximum power...

    A friend of mine bought a Lexus LC 500 and we wanted to install a cold air intake system but the naturally aspirated v8 it has is already fitted with dual air intakes stock. So theoretically speaking, if you where to replace the stock filters with twin cold air intakes would that double the hp given from just one intake ? Or would it be the same as having one cold air intake?

  • @charlesjacobsen9895

    I think a lot depends on the engine. The big V-8’s already have enough torque and HP so an intake doesn’t make much difference. However when I installed a K & N Typhoon intake on my 2014 V-6 300C, I noticed a big difference in throttle response , passing power, and it knocked 3 tenths off my 0-60 time. The sound is also great and my car performs like it never did with the stock system. BTW, this improvement came without any exhaust or other mods, just the intake, so if you have a V-6 Mopar, try an intake, I think you’ll like the results!

    It’s a short ram intake not a cold air intake. The reason it’s dead even in that race is because you’re taking in hot air but at a higher rate. If you had a true cold air intake (air being taken from OUTSIDE the engine bay where HOT air is) you’d be making slightly more pretty ponies because the less restrictive air tube and high flow air filter WITH colder (more dense) air.

    • @mikeepperson792

      This and a short ram air intake like the one you have generally is only faster in low rpm ranges. Hence, why you kind of pulled slightly at the beginning of the race and then you evened out

My GTO came with the most restrictive exhaust system I’ve ever seen it was unreal how much whp was being robbed from it lmao

    You need a tune when installing CAI, otherwise it's just a waste of money. Adding more fuel at WOT (richer) and adjusting the global spark timming with a tuner will squeeze out more HP at higher RPM. I've dynoed my car with CAI without a tune and actually lost 2 HP. After tune I gained 13 HP. If your limited for money, skip the CAI and get yourself a set of underdrive pulleys but just make sure your Alternator is up to par.

    thats not really a cold air intake since its still in the engine bay, the heat sheild doesnt even do much, cold air intake filters are located usally infront of a tire in the wheel well right behind either a fog light or bumper.
    So its mostly sucking in hot air from the engine bay since its not placed in a appropriate spot

      Yeah the colder the temps the better. Cold air is more dense = more hp

  • @wooferdevlin3571
    @wooferdevlin3571 7 лет назад

    the way I understand, cold air keeps the HP, since heat lowers it. after multiple runs, times can rise , so the cold air keeps them consistent and low as they can be. isn't that about right?

    The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has a cold air intake through one of the inner headlights. I don't know how they did it on the Charger Hellcat

    Thats not a true cold air intake. More of a short ram intake. The Bwoody intake I have in my WK1 jeep actually goes down in behind the front bumper where cool air, not HOT engine bay air is hitting it. A tune with your intake will probably decrease your 8th mile time by .2 seconds.

    • @smack9x
      @smack9x 7 лет назад +5

      I agree. I'm not sure why people call these "cold" air intakes if they are drawing in the hot air of the engine from behind the radiator. Every manufacture that I know of has their tubing bringing in the air that's in front of the radiator.

    • @Sp-nd6uj
      @Sp-nd6uj 7 лет назад +6

      They call them that because they are idiots! And I'm not being an ass or a troll here it's the absolute truth. A bunch of god damn morons that believe and repeat what corporations tell them to. It's ridiculous.

      AdussFadass Yeah dude, he didn't even have a CAI. Definitely looked more like a short ram!

    • @Scottwax
      @Scottwax 7 лет назад +1

      It is a heat shielded short ram intake. The R2C intakes (have one on my G35) have a shroud around the filter that seals to the bottom of the hood to keep hot air out. Not sure how the Charger factory set up is but on my car, it retains the factory cold air "grabber" that funnels air to the intake.
      Intakes alone though aren't going to give huge gains especially on an otherwise stock car. But once you open it up on the exhaust side, you do need more air intake potential. And on OBD cars, at least an ECU reset is needed to help the computer adjust to the mods but at tune is needed to maximize them.

    • @Djcrazykidd
      @Djcrazykidd 6 лет назад

      The best "RAM" style intakes are the one that start from the front of your car to the engine itself.. The faster you go the air is being pushed into your cars engine , which would increase power. It's all in the design too..

  • @coleG112
    @coleG112 7 лет назад +1

    What I've heard is a CAI, plus new headers, plus a new exhaust, with a nice tune and that's when you'll really notice change.
    But that's like $3-4k which I don't have. So the stock 250 HP/TQ of the 3.5L is good enough for me lol.

  • @SuperHammerzeit
    @SuperHammerzeit 3 года назад

    It has to be closed box with that round filter! cold air comes from front of the car and it goes all over the engine bay and hot air from engine bay heats the semi-sealed area you have around that air intake

  • @giuseppecracolici544
    @giuseppecracolici544 7 лет назад

    The difference lies in the amount of air that can pass through the intake, MAF size has something to do with that and when a tune is calibrated to work with the intake it adds more power than a stock intake box with tune.

    The reason the performance is the same is due to the stock computer parameters. If you were to change the programming from a approximate 18 to 1 air fuel mixture to a 12 to 1 with an aftermarket chip you would see a big difference in horsepower. As it is from the factory you will not burn more fuel to create more power

  • @jacokoen8859
    @jacokoen8859 7 лет назад

    CAI works best on turbo diesel vehicles. You also have to do the exhaust and give it some more fuel. Exhaust diameter on turbo diesel should be at least 3 inch from turbo straight to the end.

    A very important point: each hemi will have at least a +\- 2hp difference, maybe more. That's before you start with mods. Just FYI

  • @travistaylor7939
    @travistaylor7939 3 года назад +1

    Different vehicles respond differently to mods. I have a CAI on my car and while it didn't make a major improvement, it did make me quicker. Notice I said quicker, not faster. Meaning acceleration increased. The argument that CAIs do nothing is coming from people who have never had one and bandwagon into conversations, or from those who just had it on a vehicle that already had sufficient airflow so it didn't make a difference.

    Short ram, not a CAI, actualy, its a bit of a Hot Air Intake...a CAI have a COLD air feed from the fendre/grill. Close that intake filter, add a cold air feed pipe and test again. And make sure you have same tire pressure, same window opening area and same number os passengers

    If you install a CAI, wouldn't you have to adjust the fuel/air for the car to function properly? The real test is a tune on a car with CAI and a tune on the same/similar car without the CAI. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @Sp-nd6uj

    In my situation I did a motor swap and couldn't find the stock air filter housing for less than $150. So i installed an intake. I had to remove my second horn to pipe it down all the way.
    Idk, mines isn't chipped, I don't have more then new cats, mid pipes and an m3 exhaust, and I guess I'm comparing it to a filter literally hanging right off the MaF, but I noticed smoother idle, amd more power over 5k

    • @flunkie91
      @flunkie91 7 лет назад

      Uhhh even with that heat shield you aren't pulling in cold air. Colder then previously? Sure. But I can see why you didn't see a gain. There is no room for air pressure to build up as it curves and enters your motors throttle body. Some are custom engineered for this effect.
      Mines is piped all the way down. My butt Dyno predicts a 6hp increase. I had to do it. It was $40 for the kit online Vs $150 for the stock air box I
