Sown 11 days ago most of these where up and out of the compost in three days. Because the compost was sieved it means the seed is completely surrounded so it germinates better. The compost was warmed first as was the water used to water them and the seeds too, all went into the propagator to warm before sowing. Potting on today the compost and water again where warmed first.

I would never say you were ham fisted. You always look so delicate when you sow seeds.
Thank you Eli, I certainly feel ham fisted...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp positively graceful 😀
I started my chillies and sweet peppers and obergines in the vitopod with lights end of January and they have germinated well and are not leggy because of the vitopod lights, I also put the seeds into the compartment trays to start with.
They are doing well and it's mid Feb now.
You're not 'cheating the system', you're taking advantage of your knowledge and tools to make for a longer growing season. I've started some seeds on the weekend months before most people in Canada can reasonably do that. Not all growing has to occur outside.
Very well said Garry!...Steve...😃
Thank you Steve. Will pot my chillis, peppers and aubergine seedlings on now👍🏾
Good luck Jennifer...Steve...😃
Glad to hear peppers can take a while to come up, my leeks, onions and sweet peas are well on their way
Hi Rachel, it is a strange one why some take longer than others, I can only make an assumption that it comes down to freshness of the seed...Steve...😃
I’ve still got bags of peppers in my freezer from last year. It’s so nice to make a meal in winter with home grown peppers already chopped!!
With my new allotment I’m going to grow LOADS more & hopefully build a few of your hot boxes to protect them & hold heat. Great video Steve 👍🏻
It is nice to have that Jo, think I have one small bag left in the freezer, and that is it...Steve...😃
Only just planted mine today.
Good advice 👍 Steve 🌿💚🌿
Thanks Peggy...Steve...😃
Thank you Steve, will let you know how I get on 👍😊
Good luck Denise...Steve...😃
Hi Steve, good video on explaining about served compost, I do the same 🙂 lots of good advice 🙂 thanks for sharing & take care 🙂
I do hope more and more people start sieving their compost then they can see the benefits of it...Steve...😃
Thank you, Steve x I am starting my peppers and my aubergine this weekend. The broad beans are doing very well and coming on nicely. Yours are looking very healthy. It's nice to get our hands dirty again, eh??
Yes it is! Getting your hands into soil is good for the soul...Steve...😃
Great to see things moving along Steve.
I’m a good couple of weeks behind you.. I guess your temperate conditions down south give you more of a head start 😂
All down to the propagator Mark, nothing to do with weather...Steve...🙂
Thanks Steve for sharing the tips on growing. I am hoping to grow an aubergine this time they all failed last year, Take care.
Best of luck Sandra!...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp Thanks 🙂 👍

Another brilliant, educational video thank you Steve. I've sown my onions and leeks already and also some peppers so I'll be sowing my aubergines next. Also, next month I'll be getting some of the container wise module trays ready for potting on. I notice your specs are missing an arm, if you still have the arm and want a quick fix, use a cocktail stick where you would normally use a screw, let me know if it works. Take care, thanks again 😁🌱☀️
Hi Fletchy, my specs broke just above the hinge, snapped right through the arm! But I now have new specs...Steve...😃
Oh wow. You live in a very nice climate if you can start those this early in an unheated greenhouse. We wont start in greenhouse until the end of April in USA cold hardiness zone 7
Unheated greenhouse, heated propagating bench...or windowsill...Steve...😃
Great to watch you potting on it has convinced me further to sieve my potting compost. Once you’ve pricked out your seedlings is it possible to use the same compost to sow more seeds in the same trays? Also I don’t have heat in my green house so I don’t think I could grow them on yet.
You could reuse but you run the risk of mislabeling later on. If you sow Peppers then reuse to sow tomatoes, you could pot a tomato on when it is a late germinating pepper. I try to leave these trays to one side and start a new tray, the ones left to one side become backups for a while, if needed and eventually they will be composted...Steve...😃
Do the seedlings when you pot them on do they need light got them on heat mats for warmth . Thank you
Hi Steve you are cracking along there which is great to see, we will be a month behind but that's OK with us have you ever grown caspa a white aubergine. Stay safe Bill and val
You will soon catch up given the weather you have down there, I used to grow a few varieties when I lived down south but I have never grown a white one...Steve...😃
Wow, your Chilli's and peppers look waaaaaaaaay ahead of mine, I think I wasn't far behind, 1st I think I sowed mine. will do a proper check in the morning! I need an onion update . . . I've tried at my local B&Q to get the 1/4 seed trays they dont seem to have them, they are ideal, if you know an alternative supplier please let me know! take care 😀 Thanks as always Steve x
There are plenty on ebay Anita and if you search google for them you will find some good suupliers there if you dont like ebay...Steve...😃
hi were can i get the small green trays iv got a window heating tray but no seed trays to fit on it ..thanks
EBay or Amazon do them
Question: I have started some mini peppers in a clear ice cream tub, I realise this is not ideal. So, I would like to know where I can buy the mini green seed trays with covers, Thanks.
I'd like to find some of those as well. Perfect size.
EBay or Amazon sell them
Hi Steve once again great video and information just a quick question how big is your plot
Hi David, it is approximately 120 ft x 45 ft...Steve...😃
That's great Steve any ad for raised beds I have just purchased some wood to make them with me been a novice do I just just dig out to put them in like level of and use the soil that it's there but some of my compost or do I need to line them
@@davidmayhew3610 I know your not asking me but thought I might be able to help. Look up no dig beds on here and a wealth of information will be at your fingers. Basically line them with non-printed brown cardboard. It will stop weeds coming up and give your new plants a head start over the weeds.
Hi Steve do you sieve the compost for potting on after the seed sowing stage
Hi Ann, yes I do! It really does not need it but sieving is habit for me and I feel it does make moving seedlings on a lot easier than using lumpy compost...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp thank your I’ll try it this way
When will take leeks from in the house?
Could you have planted those seedlings deeper now, as well as when pot on further?
Yes I could of planted deeper if needed, seedlings not too leggy this year...Steve...😃
What happens when they get bigger, each of those seedlings has to go in one litre pot, you're going to need space for 20 pots when you'll be wanting to put in trays of lettuce, spinach and spring onion into that propagater and it'll be too risky to put the heat loving plants outside the propagater. I think you're going at it a month to 6 weeks early.
Hi Ian, yes it becomes a juggling competition, but the peppers and aubergines have their space on my bench propagator, it used to be windowsill before that. These are warm weather plants and need that warmth. Brassicas do not need a propagator to get them going. Most other things may need to germinate on heat, but then grow on at ambient temperature, so germinate lettuce on heat for a week, pot on then leave on the bench, the place in the propagator can now be taken by your spring onions....Steve...😃
