If you're looking into increasing your curb appeal I highly recommend installing concrete curbing. there are several lawn border ideas but having crisp edging by installing concrete curbing is the best long term plan. Most companies use a concrete curbing machine that speeds up the pace of completing these hard to do jobs. Its best left to the professionals since the costs commonly only runs $5 per linear foot and below. But beware of the hidden fees after the job is done.

I get the cost, landscaping is hard work. I'm dealing with a remodel and those rates aren't too negotiable. Have to do the math and plus up, before you get started. Hats off to al the laborers.

I love that in-ground sprinklers are so common in the US that almost every lawn channel I watch you guys talk about them like they are in everyone's yard. Here in Ontario Canada, I think I've almost never seen a property with them.
For sure. It is super common here. there are a few states that don't natively have them.
The US covers many climate zones. In the Northeast, they're not super common. Most likely for the same reasons as Ontario... the one time you forget to winterize it, you'll be replacing the whole system! Much easier in states with warm winters.

Great vid. Just removed an old crabapple tree and it had a river rock border around it, about a 15’ diameter. The hardest part was removing all the mulch and tree roots and dirt. I think it was around 20 yard waste bags. But that part of my lawn is level baby! Reel mowing that front lawn, can’t wait!
Nicely done! I had a nightmare like that at my last house. 80 linear feet by 3ft wide of 1" gravel that was 3" deep. aparently the previous owners had horses and built them a walking pad along the fenceline. the grass was growing lime green throughout that section and I immediately knew something was wrong in the soil. I ignored it for the better part of a year, then couldn't help myself to fix it.

Great Info. It's like buying a house. You don't just go to closing and start living in the house. There is curtains, blinds, rugs, shower curtains, furniture, lawn mowers, and etc. A lot of folks overlook and do not plan for that expense. Again, great video.
Totally agree! It is a convenience cost but oddly enough it saves me soo much time and headache mowing along the fenceline.

Yes, I’ve had issues for 7 years getting anything but weeds to grow next to my driveway. I just seeded a few weeks ago, for now it’s looking good, but if it goes south I’ll be getting a probe on it for sure. I’m betting there is concrete there.

This use to popular in the 1960s to 1970s here in NY, but with winter freeze and thaw most of these buckled and cracked over time. My neighbor has one his grandfather installed back in the 1960s, but half of it is sunken below or lifted up above the grass line.

I've changed my layout of the planting beds so many times in the last 20 years, curbing the beds would never have worked for me. But curbing to street to lawn I will always recommend, seen so many rotted out wood timber street curbs in my neighborhood.

Hey guy, when I owned and ran my curbing businesses, 1) always removed all excess concrete from edges of curb as part of the job (geez that's awful to have to do yourself) 2) while I usually didn't take out all the extra sod between where curb goes and fence in your instance, I always garbage bagged up all the sod from cutting the curb path. Made for a big load at the curb but customers didn't really like having to diy or call in another guy.
$ talks and if your curber was smart he'd have run the option by you. 'course if you thought 4.75/ft was expensive then you probably would not have paid the few more $ per foot for sod removal...
Curious, why not just install taller sprinkler heads that shoot over the curb, or raise them with some creative pvc work, instead of the expensive re-piping process?
Hey Glenn! My area is full of penny pinchers and business is so competitive by passer byer companies its tough. few quotes came in at $2.50 per linear foot but I've learned my lesson with the low ballers. concrete wouldn't have been as dense as I'd like and the finish wouldn't have been as nice either. My local area is so full of low ballers that the people just get used to the bare minimum and figure they'll just do the rest on there own.
As for the sprinklers. I'm planning on planting other edible trees and plants throughout and the foliage will eventually get in the way so it didn't make sense to leave them be.
edge looks great...i was thinking of doing this in some form in my back yard also but mine is to keep my rocks #2 from pushing against my wooden fence and bowing the bottom....if they told me it would be 2000 right from the start including all the debris removal, i would say DO IT now....i think if the concrete guys gave you a price like that in the beginning , it would have saved you time and money would have been upfront with no hidden costs...except maybe the sprinkler moving costs...great yard Ginja

this is when I had kentucky bluegrass so i just let nature take its course. if i didn't have something that spreads like kbg or bermuda etc I would seed.

Thought for sure last week you'd be excited to use that gorgeous sod to repair a few areas in the front and back yard. But sure you were not looking for more work after seeing the additional work involved in the boarder project. Isn't that how every project is...I always triple my initial time estimates.
Called J&J Nursery/Great Basin Turf yesterday looking for Turf Blue Pro seed. They didn't seem to have it or maybe they have essentially the same thing under their own custom Barenbrug mixes but they didn't know the content of their mixes. Have you found a place locally that sells Turf Blue Pro by the pound for small seeding projects? Loved the view off Timp btw. That is such a gorgeous hike especially in July when the wild flowers are blooming!

Have you ever been to the plane wreck on Timp and is it worth the effort? I tried to find it but the directions weren't adequate for me to find it. Needed a GPS or something...Google Maps are only so useful.

Why didn’t you cut strips from the sod you removed to fill the gap between the curb and existing lawn? Done in a couple hours with almost no cost!

Great question. I didn't want the border along the fence due to the catch bin of my cylinder reel. On the east side I planted more edible plants and some decorative. I haven't quiet figured out what I'll do with the front yard yet.

Looks good, I would of made them stay straight and square off the fence vs. steering around every little obstacle.
the only steering around was arount the tree. its a mountain west thing. on the east coast and west coast people prefer straight lines.
They have a similar installation system down here in the south east, but southerners call them “Borders”. 😝

I didn't mind at all. it was intentionally done that way. the curbing along my house is also wavy and it compliments it nicely.

Well, you could save most of the money by doing it by yourself. Cleaning debris, filling soil, bring waste to dumpster, all this is easy work which just requires time to do. If you hire people you have more spare time but less money. For me (from Germany) we have dumpster where you can bring soil, garden waste and dirt etc for free. You only need a trailer. Also you find lots of free offers for dirt online where you can pick up by yourself without additional costs. So for me it would be only sprinkler repositioning.

As a vinyl fence installer I would advise against using fence bottom rails as bulkhead for dirt,rocks or even mulch. I have seen many homeowners bow their rails out very badly. That black aluminum edging that some pros use would be one solution .

Did you consider sealing your curbing with concrete sealant? I just had some installed in Idaho that looks just like yours and the installer said it's a good idea.
It’s a good idea. I didn’t do it. I don’t like the idea of having to keep doing it, which is why I don’t. Realistically the seal looks great for 3 years in my region
Those were good looking sod pieces! I at least have a large property that I can save on disposal fees and just recycle on my own property. You got your monies worth but I'm still wondering why you wanted the edging. I would rather maintain lawn the flower beds.
The edging serves a few purposes. My neighbors and I compete for watering and it floods along the edges. I was ruining my fence with the sting trimmer as well. It was difficult to mow along the edge and turn my mower around. so far I'm super pleased.
Attention to detail. That edging is going to make that low reel mowed lawn stand out.
What's the difference between top soil, dirt, compost, and loam? I assume you don't have a compost pile for the sod?
Not on this postage stamp property. Topsoil and dirt are commonly the same. Topsoil is screen dirt.
Over by me we just give a price for the job and that's that, I personally don't like that hourly stuff👍👍

You could have at least kept the dirt that was pulled out from the edging. and stored it somewhere behind the house. Then used it, when you plan on leveling the area by the water meter. I did some lawn work myself. one thing i did was went to hardware store and picked up some big trash cans. like ones that put out in street for garbage day. I was able to fill up 3 and half of them. with amount you had it would have been alot more cans. but, still, I had a few cans with dirt. That i use on projects.

Hi Terry! If you're referring to the joint expansion point he puts in the concrete the answer is yes. they're their to provide relieve from frost heave which is a common occurance over the winter. Prevents the rest of the slab from getting traditional cracks.

Wait so what’s the purpose of curbing your lawn? To separate your grass from your neighbors grass for lawn care reasons? Cosmetic? Were you originally planning on planting a garden on the edges or was that just a byproduct of them not being able to get the machine up against the fence?
Few reasons. primary reason was to get the grass off the fence. weed wacking the fenceline is not idea in my opinion and you can't string trim around the posts well because it the fence posts aren't flush with the fence walls.
The other issues is I'm limited on space to put trees and plants. trees and plants require a different watering cycle than the grass as well. seperating them makes it soo much better.
The other issue is my neighbors watering schedule never matches mine and flooding occurs on the fence line all too often.

depends on the companies. the issue in my area is everyone here is cheap. to appease the masses and in order to be competitive they end up cutting these corners to lower bid prices to not stress the home owner out.

Same question - my initial thought would be to keep the heads between the curb and fence, add flowers and mulch there, and get heads that spray over the curb into the lawn......
Great question and I should have mentioned it in the video. If i leave the heads, eventually i'll get weeds that will get in the way and ruin my coverage. I will be planting edibles and decorative plants in there regardless so they have to be moved.
I figured it was as much for future plants as anything. Figured I’d ask. I imagine if a head was close enough to the curb on an inside corner you could leave it.

St Augustine is nothing but Crabgrass. Not sure why anyone would grow Crabgrass on purpose but there is a lot of St Augustine out there...
@@JonP_4-31inf all grasses are related to crabgrass. As much as i would love to have a Kentucky blue grass yard i cant I live about 500 miles away from being able to. I personally think Bermuda is a weed but I dont go around bashing other lawn choices because I understand different folk have different stokes. Additionally crabgrass has alot of uses. The seeds are edible and used to make flower. So i wouldn't be shocked if someone out there uses it to make bread. Something we can't say about our target grasses.
@@chasingthefish9042 Bermuda is the easiest grass to maintain, at least in my experience. Easily handles drought and seems to grow on anything if left untouched.

I'm surprised they didn't clean the excess concrete from the form. Seems like a laziness issue and not wanting to haul away their debris. I'd be really upset with that seeing how it was an issue created by the concrete company.
Pretty much industry standard to not be included in the cost. Especially in the lower priced markets.
I agree with Tim. Its an industry standard issue. hard to compete when everyone is doing the low ball costs especially in my local market.
@@pestandlawnginja it reminds me of home builders just not being thorough and allowing construction debris to be left behind in new builds. Sad that quality doesnt extend throughout the entire process. They could have easily had a guy come behind and scrap the excess into a bucket and at the very least into to pile away from the turf IMO. I really enjoy your videos by the way, very informative to the DIY. Just hated that they did that much residual damage.

You can do that for sure! I chose this style to make my mowing more enjoyable. I'll also end of putting flowers and ornamentals throughout that area between the border edge and the fence.
I think you left out 1 item and cost in all of this. What did you do on the other side of the curb? The side that doesn't have grass? That would have to be filled in with something, not just left and bare dirt. Rocks, or Bark or something...

I'm in Arizona, perhaps things work differently from where you're at. Here, that is an unfinished clean-up by the concrete company! I don't give a damn about whichever crap excuse they would've thrown at me trying to get out of it...those excuses would've slapped em' directly in the back of the head! LOL
The SOD they pulled up should've been taken w/ them PERIOD! The Pickaxe'n and removal of the concrete run out is still part of the clean-up and finishing that the concrete jokers should've done. The extra attention to detail and finish work are the types of things that separate the best businesses from the fraudsters. With Fraudsters, the surface work is made sure to look great... That's to keep you from looking harder and eventually exposing all these little touches that are left out of the contract or additional costs not included or just not offered at all.

It's a fantastic argument. The biggest problem in my area is an issue with competing against fly by night businesses. This problem has driven companies to be low cost options. Not only due to competition but also by locals demand of low cost.
Causation is evident by the issues I faced with the cleanup. You pay for it no matter what with a bit of a hassel.

i kept the sod pieces. but yes I did pay someone to haul off the dirt. it was hard compact clay and i wanted something more friendly to plant succulents and cana lilly's. both require better drainage.

it all depends on the area for sure. we used to be the cheap state but as these new generation of kids get older they are opposed to manual labor and in return the prices spike on service industries.
That’s unfortunate your curber did not explain the full process to you and set the precedent of what is done buy him and what is not done. To be fair some of the additional cost you incurred was because you chosen to have block style curbing done, that is typically done pre landscape not post landscape. We’re post landscapes our would have saved your self some money and work and gained functionality of your curbing as well.
I had no issues with the installer. these were things i didn't think about. our area is a tough one because everyone and there dog is a business owner. Our local area demands competitive pricing and will jump ship over a dime. He wasn't the cheapest and did a phenomenal job. these were things that I found the industry in general doesn't do and people should think about before installing curbing.

I am a curber in your market and there are a lot of thing I do that no one else does, education is one of them. I know the market very well and the industry as a whole I train others across the country, new companies and old as well to help improve there processes and overall product/work. Our market has been very flawed since the late 80’s.
