  • Dedicated to the Princess Marie Esterhazy, this sonata was written in 1784. One year later, Johann Andreas Stein built the Viennese piano which is the model for our instrument. The clear, delicate sonority of this piano is perfectly suited to the graceful style of Sonata Hob. XVI:40.
In this video Susan plays the first movement, Allegretto e innocente. Be sure to see the next video where she plays the final Presto.
Special thanks to Eben Pajanconi at Ebspaj Creatives, Chaianne Ellis at Soultech Audio and Clive Titmuss for piano tuning and tech. The Viennese piano was built by Johannes Secker in 1996, after Stein 1785.

Beautiful playing, Susan! I love the sound of the early 'forte pianos' Something harpsichordish about its attack but also a slightly nasal modern piano sound.

Lovely Susan. I was able to play a fortepiano in college. It takes some getting used to but its always interesting hearing Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven etc performed on period appropriate instruments.

Thank you for the kind words! I have learned a lot from playing early pianos, and you are right, it feels surprisingly foreign at first. Once I got used to managing the bright attack, due to leather hammers, I was more able to create the lines I wanted. I appreciate your comment!
