How to Make a Patio Deck Box // Pool Storage

  • For today's project I'm tackling some organization - but not in the shop! We have a pool in backyard and we love it, but the pool accessories can get a bit out of hand. Storing them out of sight can be difficult if you don't have anywhere to put them so I thought I'd solve that! This deck box will also serve as a table for entertaining and a home for our pool robot (is that a poolba?).
The construction is pretty easy and is made from treated 2x4's and cedar boards. All of the materials I'm using for this build are meant to live outside. What I don't want living INSIDE are bugs and critters so I took some extra steps to seal up this box.
I hope you enjoy the video, and if you have a similar problem, maybe this will give you some ideas for how to solve it. I don't have specific plans on this box but I tried to include as much detail as possible so you could make one of your own. Enjoy!

It was nice that you helped your wife put that box together 😊. At least that is the way it is at my house. Built a big outdoor shed last Fall and my wife helped holding the level when I was setting forms for the concrete base. Weekends later when friends were over for dinner she had to show everybody the shed WE built ! When I peeled potatoes for Thanksgiving I asked everybody if they enjoyed the meal we made. Apparently she didn't see the humor. Last time I do that ! 😁

I am in a similar situation where I just installed a pool and have a lot of crap around for it. I also looked at buying something but nothing really matched what I wanted to do. My situation is a bit different where the box will be up a bit higher but your ideas and suggestions, especially about bug proofing, are great tips. I really like the cedar finish.

My friend was using a “user friendly” brad nail gun when the brad diverted and imbedded itself in his face next to his eye. Half an inch more, and he would have lost an eye. I’m a first believer in wearing eye protection, with any type of woodworking activity. Take my advise for what it is worth, always wear eye protection. I loved your storage box design and will definitely make one for my outside compressor. Thanks!

Very nice build~! I have a couple of heavy duty deck boxes by the pool and on the deck that we bought years ago, but your video gave me a great idea for making them mobile and bug-proof at the same time. I've been trying to figure a way to block critters (roaches in Georgia) from the drain holes/slots without completely blocking them up and seeing the window screen on the base of yours planted the seed. Thanks much~!!

Awesome. No manufacturer makes deck boxes that are long enough. I was trying to figure out a waterproof way to store the frame poles for my wife's fancy pro art show canopy...which are about 6 feet even when collapsed.
You could really carve out a niche for yourself with this...maybe with one continuous compartment instead of two.

I am a beginner and want to make something that hides the electric outlets that come out of the ground next to the pool paver deck. they are all caddywampus. i'd like to have a area for the robot, and then a cupboard like area for the alexa- it needs shade. I may make mine more like a dresser/armoire.

Chris, my biggest piece of advice is keep it simple! My preferred method to plan out a project is still pencil and paper. For more complex projects or 3D printing projects, I use Fusion360. Lots of resources on RUclips to learn it too.
