Maybe you can answer this coz I love therr music but don't seem that they sold out in any way shape or form only they not in the rag papers, have they been the same band of ppl from the 90s til now not that's important just curious to know I guess... Dummy such a great track
2024, Machine Gun on Jools still astounds. Their bravery in showcasing such a raw, powerful piece live is why they're legends. A masterclass in musical innovation and emotional depth. Absolute respect.
To me this is just so.. painful, I remember first time I heard this song, I literally felt I was descending to hell, and I'm not a religious person. Just powerful, desperate, soul-crushing music. Amazing what these guys can craft.
For some reason, this one for me has always evoked images of war in their most brutal form, as torn limbs, gas attacks, napalm bombings etc. Starting from the third minute they seemingly tried to make the sound so twisted and unnerving, as if in an attempt to convene an image of a crime against all human, or of that change in the mind of a fresh conscript when they pull a trigger or stab with a bayonette and the opposite, living and breathing a moment ago, falls, and after that a numbness follows.
Did anyone notice that this is a "flawless" edited performance? In the original, which you can see also at RUclips with lower quality, there is a drum glitch in the last chords. Also in the original there is a close up of Beth's ballerina shoe. I'm wondering why BBC edited both out :D
look at the track title, try to use your imagination, listen again. still don't like it ? not your thing. and yeah, the lyrics and Beth's gentle voice work great with the harsh sounds. also huge respect to Portishead for choosing a song like this to play in a tv show. classic band already !
Beth Gibbons is a national treasure
Something brutal, almost obscene about this song. Amazing.
The John Carpenter bit at the end needs to go on for at least another 10 minutes!
Still sounds like the future. One of the most original songs of all time.
Beth seems fragile, but when she begins to sing, that fragility transforms into an overwhelming power.
It really is something unique.
I can't believe they did this track on Jools xD full respect, one of the greatest bands of our times

Everyone in that room witnessed the magic of music
The subtle variations in the "Drums" make this so much better
So simple, minimal yet so much emotion and power. Reminds me of Terminator Judgment Day.
because it is...
@@chrisv384 Yeah, they projected images of David Cameron with Terminator eyes in stadium versions of this track. See the Glastonbury concert 2013.

It's not conventional hell, it is skynet hell...
agree
I can tell this is hard for her to stay on tempo but she understands how brilliant the producer is making this difficult for her.
It cant be comfortable really to hear this live though. The audience should get their brains and hearts ready for a hard thumping sound
To any aspiring youngster's ....this is how it's done .
Indeed. This, and their performance of Silence at Coachella, back in the day.
Her singing is fantastic

This and Friends are Evil from Jesu.
I love her voice
She did some work with Massive Attack too... Haunting
@@gergatron7000 What did she do? I wasn't aware. I'd love to hear it.

Pretty much the sound of death. It's like This Heat's "Not Waving".
What a trio !
Thank you SO MUCH for the HD version!
The ending is terminator
Love this song and love T2 Judgment day and this song gives me chills because it reminds me of the film.
RoboCop
Una de las voces más increíbles de este mundo, la gran beth
At the time, my brain did not compute.......now, it sounds fantastic
Reminds Bjork's pluto ;) both are epic!!!
CRANK IT UP!! I added Sound Booster to Chrome and played this massively loud. Its mind blowing
Just brilliant ❤️
I always felt like she could sing with the last bit with the synth, it could be pretty interesting.
The choice to let the music there speak for itself is the perfect decision cuz when that part hits with that synth at the end it brings me to TEARS!!
It reminds me of the Favelas . Stay down !
Wicked stuff xxx
gods among men.
Was für ein Brett!

Realmente intenso..
This song sounds like a genocide.

Boring after a while ,or is that the point. If so it's been done before. Liked the lyrics

It's been twelve years now and I'm still waiting to get bored. It isn't a song, it's a monument.
boring if u take it at face value this is meant to be a visceral experience ur meant to meditate on it!
Not a cool Portishead song, I could do that !
It's terrible.
