I think you're undervaluing the Mirthful Fey's charm ability. It's value isn't in actually charming enemies, but in failing and then triggering your Beguiling Twist. This lets you frighten or charm a new enemy virtually every turn. You don't even really need your Summoned fey going into melee, though you probably want to for the damage still. Summon Fey is also a spell that lasts a long time, so you will get a lot of use out of your free casting.

I always thought their spell list was solid. Dimension door and misty step are decent spells. Also damage-wise, they might not be on par with how ridiculous gloomstalkers are but they could be up there in terms of ranger damage thanks to dreadful strikes.

While i agree that a Fey Wanderer's 7th-level feature is dependent on your team's spell choices, another thing to consider is that your teammates can also succeed on those saving throws.
Elves and Bugbears have advantage on saving throws against being charmed and Satyrs have advantage on saving throws against spells.
In a team that has any of those races, if an enemy targets them and they succeed on the saving throw, you can use the feature and turn your opponents spell effect against them.

Fey Wanderer is good if you build for it. By that I mean, Wisdom as your highest score, Constitution as your second highest score, and Dexterity at a 14.
Take Druidic Warrior for your fighting style and grab the Shillelagh cantrip, use a staff as your weapon and druidic focus, and pair a shield with the best medium armor you can get your hands on.

So an interesting thing about the fey wanderer is that wisdom is added to any charisma checks... So if you multiclass from 3rd level fey wanderer into Lore bard, by 9th level you can add half your proficiency bonus, your wisdom modifier, and your charisma modifier to All charisma checks, counterspell and dispel magic use a charisma check when trying to get rid of a higher level spell. This could be interesting, with a total potential of +13 with counterspell and Dispel magic.

Try building Fey wanderer like this:
    -Prioritise Wisdom over Dexterity!
-Take expertise in Deception or another social skill as a ranger
-at 2nd lvl take "Druidic warrior" fighting style and take "Shillelagh" cantrip.
-You can pick "Polearm master" feat to give you a third attack. You have "Hunters Mark" and Shillelagh as a bonus action, but you can always spam the Shillelagh over the day, so its always ready.
-If you have WIS 18 and CHA 14 at lvl5, whenever you roll Charisma check, it will be= 1d20+4(Wisdom)+2(CHA)+6(Expertise)= 1d20+12....
-Your DC is much better, just like your ranger spells like Dispel Magic and Charm Person, not to mention the lvl7 Feature are much better.
Better than any Rogue or Bard.
    Enjoy

One good strat you might not have noticed is that by casting the Friends cantrip on the allied paladin with a high save you get to spend one action to cause fear or charm for a full minute instead of the one round Friends normally lasts, getting you significant mileage for the cost of a single cantrip. Since beguiling twist doesn't specify enemy for the successful save and your ally will probably not be very hostile if you plan this with them in advance.

You can actually make a very strong wisdom focused ranger with this who takes the shillelagh cantrip and a shield and goes to the front lines.
All of a sudden, your ranger spell casting is good, you can still be the scout because you can take expertise in stealth and use your good wisdom score for perception. You can also be the face, adding your wisdom score to Charisma checks. Summoned fey can equip magic weapons, and they do respectable damage. With better wisdom score, your spell save DC increases too, making beguiling twist that much better. You can take polearm master for the bonus action attack so long as you use a quarterstaff, and all of a sudden, you are pumping out decent damage while bringing tons of nice utility and social interaction capability.

1 level Arcana Cleric dip can also give you effective scaling melee DPR by picking up Booming/Green-Flame Blade. With this build you become an alright frontliner but you'll have more infinitely more utility than a frontline fighter through Beguiling Twist (which you'll actually pump the DC of), +5 to all Wis skills, at least +5 to all Cha skills, and free Misty Steps that can bring allies. Not even mentioning the few rituals you can probably pick up as a Cleric and the whole "Ranger T4 levels suck, just get your last few levels on Cleric for the higher level spellslots".
Optimizing as a melee is worse than a ranged dpr anyway so I think compensating through the other 2 pillars while still remaining competitive with other options of the same kind in the combat pillar is a pretty good boon. Just get War Caster and max Wis and bam, build done.

Fey Wanderer is a fantastic subclass. The real answer to every argument this video has against it is identical to the arguments against all the warlock subclasses.
"Why are you taking this class past levels 3, 5, or 7? This is a dipping class for your full charisma caster classes."
Add the level 3 tricks to any bard or sorcerer, along with the rest if the stuff ranger gets up to 5, and you have a powerful gish build. Most likely better than any hexblade build of the same level. The level 7 feature is for rangers going Leonin, dipping into warlock, or taking any of the MTG backgrounds that give bonus fear or charm spells.
Fey Wanderer is a good subclass, and it's the ideal pick for ranger builds with non standard stat arrays. Half the "Optimized" builds in the game are Dex/Cha. This subclass allows ranger dips to enter that field.

Dispel Magic came in clutch to knock off a Hold person on the wizard... you know, the guy who normally would be dispelling magic? Just cause some things might not seem good for the sole purpose of damage, does not make spells 'bad for you'. Every spell has circumstances where it can be good or bad, including but not limited to, having a spell your class doesn't normally, to cover for someone who normally has it but can't use it.

I play a Ranger every week, I've been doing that for years. We fight a ton of casters too because that's usually where the challenges really are.
Anyways, you're undervaluing the power of focus fire and your 3rd level spell slot. Your busted fey wanderer does a ton of damage! When you cast dispel magic, you did a recovery to undo the 2nd level spell. What I'm advocating is you should just shoot or cast conjure animals instead because not only do you have a high chance of breaking that concentration but you also have a high chance of killing the caster too and if you killed the caster then obviously that would be a better outcome. Even doing damage and breaking the concentration is a better outcome. The guy died or took a ton of damage.
And even if by miracle the caster still has concentration, your team mate might be next in line to finish the job. Now obviously I have no idea what your initiative order was or what the battlefield actually looked like so in your specific example of casting dispel magic, it might have been correct but in majority of cases it's not.
As for utility casts, sure. Maybe once or twice in the whole campaign. But if I'm wrong and dispel magic comes up so often in utility then I would advocate to try and make scrolls at that point.

Gotta disagree on the level 11 ability. If you can trick enemies into damaging an expendable summon, that's 40 damage you "healed". If you can summon it into a choke point that's potentially even more damage you've stopped the party from taking. Obviously that's situational, but unblocked choke points are a very common situation
That's more than you'd save by killing an enemy in most cases.
Also, it triggers your level 7 ability constantly, which allows you to further lock down enemies with fear.

So Fey Wanderer pairs real nicely with Glamor Bard (bard 12/ ranger 8 ideally at level 20)! At level 20, if you where able to get your CHA and WIS to a score of 20 each, and got expertise in all the CHA skills, all your CHA skills would have a +22 to them (since skill checks count as ability checks), 5 (CHA) + 5 (WIS) + 6 (prof) + 6 (expert)! Now if you choose the improved Kenku as your race, you get an ability that allows you give yourself advantage on any skill check that you're proficient in (prof per LR), and if you add the lucky feat on top of that you can roll 3d20 and take the highest out of all of them! But wait, there's more! Then the glamor bard is able to use their enthralling performance ability to charm a number or creatures up to their CHA mod (they make a save against your DC). If they make the save, you can use your reaction to use the ranger's beguiling twist to bounce it another creature within 120 ft, and the creatures that save have no idea you tried to charm them! Then all the creatures you do have charmed instantly fail the save for the supped up command spell you get from bard! Giving you a small group of creatures under your control (more or less)! I know this is a level 20 build, and most campaigns don't tend to go past level 10, but but at least at level 6 (bard 3/ ranger 3) you'll at least have greatly enhanced CHA skills that you would be able to apply advantage on (through Kenku)! Which would make you the defacto face of the party!

The only instance where damage later is better than damage now is if that damage is extra in addition to what you were already going to do. Like what has become one of my favorite playstyles in the game: Dual Wielding Barbarian. You don't get that cool third attack on round one because more likely than not you're going to take your bonus action to rage. But once turn two comes around you're going to be doing very consistent and high damage for the rest of the fight (and since you're a Barb, long encounters are exactly what you're equipped to do). That damage can be further increased with access to further feats in addition to Dual Wielder, one i've been playing around with is the reaction from Gift of the Gem Dragon. And of course more feats mean more possible utility and flavor for your Barb which is really what they need the most. lol

Fey Wanderer is only bad if you try to make this into a dex build (which this subclass isn't built for, Dex is a suboptimal choice). Wisdom is the primary score that will turn your ranger from MAD to SAD, fueling your save DC, charisma checks, beguiling influence, and shellelagh. This subclass in in the vein of Hexblade and Astral Soul monk where you should care mostly about your one primary score.

  • @ecmo3141
    @ecmo3141 Год назад

You are missing that every Fey you summon essentially has a bonus action charm monster every single turn, and that saving against this Fey charm triggers Beguiling Twist. Your Fey shouldn't even attack at all, Charm enemies then try to grapple them, knock them prone or simply block them. It is concentration free (meaning you can spam Fey on to the battlefield getting multiple charms every single turn). Fey Wanderer is a Wisdom first ranger, this subclass leans to the casting side of Ranger-Gish, not really a striker and you want to make your own beguiling twist opportunities through Cause Fear and Summon Fey. You want a 17 Wisdom to start on point but and max it by level 8. You want Wisdom for many reasons - the Charisma skills bonus, beguiling twist saves and Summon Fey saves. You also generally want a decent charisma (12 or 14), which with expertise and charisma skills from a background makes you the best face. Keep dex at 16 or even 14 if you are going to use magic stone and a sling. You want to take Shadow Touched with Cause Fear at 4th level (this triggers Beguiling Twist), with that and then concentration-free Mirthful Fey at high levels this subclass is an awesome control build. If an enemy saves you can twist it. The great thing about beguiling twist is it is not concentration, so if you cast cause fear and then after a few turns the enemy saves, now you twist it and no longer need to concentrate, so you can cast cause fear again. Also Frightened AND Charmed is awesome because they can't attack you and they can't move towards you and Beguiling Twist-Charm is not canceled by damage. Finally the repeating save at the end of the turn for Beguling Twist is not that big a deal because if he makes his save, he saved against Frighten/Charmed and you can use Beguiling Twist again. You overestimate the value of Conjure animals, it is a good spell, but it is concentration, and you don't even have constitution proficiency. Put up that wall of flesh and you will become a target, it is unlikely to last.

As I once learned from a clever kobold, flavor is free. If you are playing in a game in which the DM feels it is appropriate for your character to have a fey themes, you can take a class with good mechanics and give yourself-fey backstory. It is not difficult. Gloomstalker? Came from a gloomy part of the feywild. Beast master? Those beasts come from the feywild. Swarmkeeper? That swarm comes from the feywild. Drakewarden? Oh, guess were my drake is from. Horizon walker? Isn't that a fey portal on the horizon? Monster slayer? They seek out evil fey -- says it right in the description. Hunter? He honed his ferral instincts by hunting in the forests of - you guessed it - the feywild..Outsde of the fact that there wasn't a ranger subclass with "fey" explicitly advertised in the name of the subclass, this subclass was unnecessary. For the record, I picked a swarmkeeper for my fey-themed ranger. His DPR was solid. But I did get tired of saying "Sharpshooter. Hunter's mark. Gathered swarm."

You're going to die in melee because even with breastplate and a shield you still don't have great ac and unless your dm decides to throw you a bone in the form of an amulet of health your hp will be bad but it is definitely a build, and one I always like to come back to it for the funny numbers(expertise + 2 ability scores being added to a charisma check go brrrr) and the sword and smile build.
