    Finally someone gives it its due credits, seriously when I saw people saying that Konosuba s2 looked "bad" and "low-budget" I was baffled, it's easily one of my favourite looking shows this season in terms of animation, I think only Dragon Maid tops it.

      Pleb King its more because many people do not understand the major difference of art and animation..

      Pleb King Yeah, but they also made Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, and that looks pretty decent I'd say. Its kind of generic looking, but even then.

      Same thing could be said with KnH and LWA, KnH is barely animated, the show is gorgeous but it's presented more like a moving manga with the screen splitting into panel and a lot more focus on giving meaning to individual shots or expression than having people actually move, LWA is more debatable but I don't think it comes even close the the level of creativity and energy that Konosuba has behind its movements.
      Dragon Maid looks amazing tho, the amount of sakuga in the show makes it very reminiscent of Nichijou except DM isn't boring as fuck.

    • @MetronaJ
      @MetronaJ 7 лет назад +16

      Joey Carthew youre a bit confused here..
      I am 99% certain you are talking about art here... which is vastly deifferent to animation... animation lies on the movement of the character and not the way it looks, the better it conveys the movement, the emotion, the tone/atmousphere and the overall personality of the character is what determines whether animation is good or not... Art on the other hand is basically truing to make things look a certain way...
      In terms of art "muh opinion" works as not everyone has the same preference on the looks of things, however this is animation where that just wont cut it..

  • @pencilnote3923
    @pencilnote3923 7 лет назад +290

    Well said.
    As an animator myself, I LOVE the animation of this show. As you said, so many people focus on the aesthetics of a show that they forget it's an "Animation" and not an "Illustration". Frankly, I'm actually getting sick of people complaining on how bad something looks just because a certain frame or so looks off or they don't look "cool" or "hot" enough to be wallpaper material and I just gotta say: u wot m8?
    The squash and stretch that Konosuba demonstrates is PHENOMENAL! It is necessary for a couple of frames to look off because it shows the illusion that the model is being exaggerated of its movements. It pains me to see that "Great animation" = "Great aesthetics". There are merits for animation to look good but when people start to undermine the effort and value of animations based solely on how good it looks, I die a little inside.
    Again, great job on this analysis and whilst I would have liked it if you talked on the frames themselves, that would be asking too much. Kudos!

    • @TheCanipaEffect
      @TheCanipaEffect  7 лет назад +38

      Thanks! I try to keep things fairly basic, as I know that talking a lot about the frames themselves can bore some people who aren't totally interested in the real mechanics of animation, but I'll try and sneak more animation technical analysis into future videos.

    • @Razgriz_01
      @Razgriz_01 7 лет назад +72

      Think about it.
      If a married man is spending time at a brothel ALL NIGHT its gonna be suspicious. But if all he has to do is go home, go to sleep and get some action, then there is no problems. After all he is just having a "nice dream"

      A succubus hotel would be the greatest thing ever for adventures

    • @CastleToastM
      @CastleToastM 7 лет назад +17

      +RazgrizOne My problem is that the succubus literally needs to be physically next to the man in question. Do you remember what happened in the episode? The girl getting caught trying to sneak in is exactly what could happen in a married household.
      It's not just a dream girl appearing in a dream, the married man is actually bringing a physical girl home.
      You would be bringing the brothel to your house, rather than letting the brothel be at the brothel.
      Either way, you're fucked.
      Thinking about it, do adventurers even get married? If you're married, you're getting settled down, and going on adventures is the exact opposite of that. If that were to be case, there would be no trouble just staying at the brothel if you need the girl next to you to have the dream.

  • @reNINTENDO

    I wasn't aware people thought Konosuba had bad animation (at least in its second season) until very recently. Maybe not enough people are old enough to remember Loony Tunes and that era of cartoons. I most certainly wasn't alive when they first came out, but reruns played constantly as a kid. Squash and stretch concepts were there in abundance. Being on model can be extremely impressive, but it can also lose a lot of character. I dunno... I guess I can't blame people for not liking it, but holy shit does it sound like those people want exclusively boring animation. Especially considering Konosuba is a comedy, where this style of animation fits really well.

    • @michaelpark6417
      @michaelpark6417 7 лет назад +8

      reNINTENDO this type of animation is used a lot in comedy shows and it works really well. Also I like how each frame there is a different expression it is really detailed and it makes the show so much funnier

      Episode 1 of season 2 took the derpy face too far for many people. It's great as a visual punchline, but doing it all the time got people annoyed.
      After that, some people felt the need to point out how "bad" Konosuba's animation was to capitalize on the disappointment, when really all most fan felt was there was too much derpy face in one episode.

    • @-DeScruff
      @-DeScruff 7 лет назад +8

      Yeah I wasn't ether...
      I mean I knew the show doesn't always look great in screenshots. But I knew that was because its often filled with motion, and the inbetween motion frames in most animation looks positively derpy and stretched. - If it doesn't it can look really choppy. specially with fast moving objects like say... A sword.
      Konosuba always looks better in GIFs then Jpgs =P

    Great video. As someone who always loved KonoSuba's animation while many people made fun of its looseness, it's nice to see a video about the people behind it and their philosophies. I love how excited you always sound, as it's endearing to hear someone be so passionate about animation and the anime industry. I really hope Kikuta continues to work in animation, as I really appreciate his philosophy about letting animators express themselves freely and I wish more people thought like that. Expressive animation is seriously underrated.

      It makes sense for LWA also because it's obviously an homage to a lot of the old Disney animation, so it makes sense they borrow from that very lively, often loose style.
      Hell, we even get a sequence basically lifted straight out of Steamboat Willie in the Sucy dream episode.

    I've never watched any of your videos before, but now that I have I have a much deeper appreciation for the animators. ohjeez. I never imagined there was so much work put into it. Of course animation is difficult but oh man I never looked at composition of shots or cinematography or anything like that. I may not be able to appreciate animation that deeply, as shown by my confusion by a few of the terms in the video and their usages, but I certainly do appreciate it a little bit more. Thanks man.

    • @ohhai10
      @ohhai10 7 лет назад +86

      Taking away the intentionally derpy faces would make the show so much worse. It makes the character animation phenomenal and taking that away and replacing it with the generic pretty faces would make it lose so much of its charm.

    • @hudrowportnof4058
      @hudrowportnof4058 7 лет назад +36

      BonVantius 2132 in serious shows? Absolutely. In a comedy like konosuba it's pretty much just a net positive.
      I mean derpy faces were one of the fundamentals of early animations. Think back to bugs bunny, early mickey and donald duck cartoons, etc. It's been a staple of the comedy genre for decades. Not only can they be funny, the exaggerated expressions can be a very effective narrative tool to drive home the extreme emotion comedic characters are feeling.
      Anime just doesn't use it all that often so it feels new. Heck, Anime doesn't follow a lot of western animation philosophies and techniques in general. Usually Anime characters tend to not move as much or as often as their western counterpart, which includes face animation. That's why konosuba is a fresh change in this regard.

    • @giotm4077
      @giotm4077 7 лет назад +15

      but isnt that the whole point of konosuba? having the characters be derpy as fuck at some points but having them somewhat serious at others?

    • @ruyman90
      @ruyman90 7 лет назад +4

      Yeah but they are looking derpy when things go dumb not when they are serious. Kasuma vs the other hero was a derpy animation but kasuma vs the dullahan was taken more serious. Just like the hunting of lizards was well animated for kasuma that took it seriously but for aqua who was acting childish was derpy animation.

    I adore the show, it's animation shifts, the fanservice (which is usually too funny to really BE fanservice for me), the expressions, all of it just helps buoy my mood and enjoy this quartet of terrible people and their wonderful world.

    When I watched the two movies, Higurashi when they cry 2006 and Konosuba, I understood roughly how Deen studio's animation team makes their products special, which is the emphasis on the characters' expressions are outstanding and smooth, typically the characters in Konosuba have extremely funny and silly expressions but they are all smoothly animated as a part of the anime and is a unique depiction of anime characters. A special case is Higurashi when they cry, yes it does have bad scenes, but many people don't see it is a minus point, on the contrary, it is a plus point to make the movie more scary and crazy, also in this anime, the strong emphasis on the expressive character of the characters in important scenes or normal are much more evident in this classic horror anime, even though it had to be produced on a low budget, but Deen studio did a great job at adapting it successfully content of visual novels to the screen, their creative art direction is amazing.

    Ikr, loved the animation since ep 1, it s so smooth, and when i see how megumin s explosion was animated, i felled in love. Though some still dont get how the artstyle is genius at depicting the plot and think the animators r just being lazy and loose

    我就是喜歡konosuba的作畫不協調感,一點都不覺得那是作畫崩壞。
    就是有這些扭曲變形,它才更具有娛樂和搞笑的趣味。

    Saying that Konosuba has incredible animation is an overstatement. I mean, this level of animation should be the standard of every anime. Saying that this was above others really says something about the quality of anime industry.

      The thing is that with the overly complicated schedules, lack of animators & in-betweeners & also the really talented people always being scattered around, you can't always have this level of aniamtion.

    Amazing video, this should be sent to all the people that says Pokémon Sun & Moon has a bad animation quality when XY had done better. One of the biggest problems in Pokémon XY was that characters had to always stay on-model, in every scene. While it may look cool sometimes, this made characters less expressive, and in XY, an arc where Ash and other characters aren't allowed to show more sides of they personality aside from the typical arquetypes of the "hero/protagonist" and "girl/love interest", this made XY extremely boring to watch.
    Man, i wish more people understand about animation in depth like you.

    I think the fact that people were able to focus on the boobs in ep.9 and not the backgrounds speaks to how GOOD the backgrounds were. I actually do look around quite a bit when i watch anime and I really loved all of the detail that konosuba puts into everything. I think if the layouts were bad then people would be picking on them but that fact that they didn't just means it succeeded in looking natural so not so many people noticed.
