Thank you! So many people call Naruto “too mainstream” and hate on it, especially if it’s your favourite anime people are like “Naruto’s your favourite anime? Clearly you haven’t watched much, you’re not a true anime fan. My favourite anime is (insert obscure anime)”. I love Naruto and it’s my favourite. The animation is incredible, it’s creative, the storyline is full of imagination... I’m about to study animation at university because I’m so interested in how it works, it’s so creative and inspiring! People are always like “your just studying it because you like anime” and no, that’s not the reason. As much as I love anime, I’m not basing my whole career on it. I am just genuinely fascinated by the idea of making my art “come alive” in a creative story. Nartuto’s animation is so inspiring, all the dramatic movements and momentum in the fight scenes... I love it ^-^
I hate how people be like “don’t pause in naruto” except the animation in those fights are absolutely insane as shown in this video, norio is such a genius
The fact that sakuga as a term is becoming more embraced and appreciated by the mainstream side of the anime community is nothing less than heartwarming to me. These animators deserve the recognition they receive as a result of these sakuga-awareness videos. Doing justice to them.
yes I hear ya. I can imagine a future where top animators are treated like celebrities. In some cases that is already a reality, like if you were to see Glen Keane at CTN, Annecy or Comic con. You would be lucky to be able to see him because he is swamped by adoring fans. Its probably the same for some of the sakuga animators but i wouldn't know as I haven't been to Japan yet..
It is an animation production method involving high quality animation, made by experienced / unique / highly skilled animators. Mostly known in TV Anime, where budget and resources would be distributed unevenly for climactic events in the story, and for repeated scenes such as intros, outros and anime girl transformation scenes. Budgets would be stretched tight for less climactic parts of the story. Overall, the series would maintain the appearance of a high budget production because of the Sakuga animation and would therefore retain it's audience. Nowadays, the definition of Sakuga has been broadened to include pretty much any animation considered to be high quality or unique. I might make a video about this...
One stuff that i thought about this video, is that Matsumoto puts the viewer in the perspective of who's getting punched, and drive us in these pains (like Sasuke rolling the water, or Kakashi trying to dodge Kakuzu kicks)
I'm so excited, I do a lot of games programming and have been really trying to work on my animation skills! This channel is a God-send find! Definitely subscribing
I took some C++, web programming, and business programming classes in Uni but they didn't have much to do with what I do now. I learned a lot on RUclips, and from different websites- I mostly make HTML5/JS canvas based 2d sprite based 8/16 bit inspired platformers and am currently trying to get good enough at drawing to attempt an action RPG in the veins of Seiken Densetsu. I have a lot of books on animating and find that it is the most difficult barrier for me to overcome without any formal training. I'm not great, but I have done a lot of studying, religiously watch GDC videos, and am doing a lot of sprite work practice. I'm particularly interested in motion/action conveyance with limited frames. That's why (although not exactly a tutorial in what I'm doing) these videos are amazing. At least to me.
Rock Lee v. Gaara is the whole reason why I went into animation. Omggg I loved that fight! Then the fight with Madara v. Shinobi allience then Madara v. Gai then Obito v. Kakashi omggggg I never seen a better fight than that! Maybe Erim v Female Titan comes close but omggggg fight scenes are my life! Totally getting your course when it comes out
Same here. I used to skipped naruto on cartoon network everytime it came on. Until that particular fight. It was dark with great character developments
I'm glad I found the animator to go with these scenes. And seeing small fragments broken down and explained really made me appreciate the animation even more.
I loved how real, fluid and natural animation felt in scenes like these from Naruto. Orochimaru vs Third Hokage hand to hand combat and facial animation ,was just so high-quality and immersive! Truly genius
Enjoyed the breakdown. I’m now a 30 year old cinematographer and I’ve always loved the specific fight scenes in naruto that clearly pushed the limits of the characters. Especially the POV shots from the movie with rock lee. Started watching naruto back when I was 14. Those were easier times
Same thought here as well. Especially that close up shot of pain punching the ground and his face gets distorted. I thought was amazing. My friend said his baby brother could animated better than that "rubbish". I remember feeling infuriated and argued back saying he doesn't even animate and wouldn't understand haha! But hey. This was back in high school and you know how stubborn high school kids were
Naruto vs Pain was great, except when Naruto turned into tailed beast mode which is all I remembered before re-watching it. I don't think it's the art style alone. The scene also had very rough sketches of the background, no noise, flat colors which looks rather rushed and unfinished. Combine that with goofy faces and rag-doll mode pain and I can understand why people mock it.
The pain fight was too goofy but it was not badly animated in my eyes. I loved every moment of it. I guess a crucial and sad moment like that was not supposed to be animated using that style but I'm happy that it exists.
Dude! This! Man it makes me so happy to hear someone else echo the same things ive been trying to talk about with my friends, the weight shifts of characters, their movements the use of physics to give a feel to it. My interest in animation has been growing more over the years and i really want to develop this interest of mine. Honestly it was the sakuga moments that kept me watching Naruto as a kid. And the fact that people disliked when characters went off model for expressive scenes disappoints me. It's almost like people levelling that criticism had never heard of the basic fundamentals such as squash and stretch. Can't wait to see a video on the pain fight because that is the one I really enjoyed for the visual spectacle. Then again I'm the type that adores Masaaki Yuuasa animations, making animation look fluid is so evocative.
Nah I totally with you. I actually prefer when the series does that. Because that let's me know as the viewer that some epic shit was about to go down. The pain fight is a prime example. When he first fights naruto the animation is the same. Up until he starts to go into bijuu mode. The fight itself become more intense which only begs for the animation to be different and fit the emotion and tension within the fight................also they just look cooler!

I've known of Naruto as long as I've watched Anime, but I've Neve actually seen more than a few seconds of it until this video. Looks like amazing energy in this show.
One of the best animators in my year was very passionate in physics and mechanics. Sometimes he would spend hours upon hours playing with various materials (water, sand, dirt) and the camera we had in class taking pictures, looking at them, drawing, writing etc.
Kobayashi! I'm so excited to see you cover him. He's become a new favorite of mine. Can't wait to see it - really enjoyed your breakdown of Matsumoto. "Your character does not need to be consistent with the character design on all of your drawings in the animation stage. Imposing this rule leads to very *boring*, *clinical* animation which is not fun to watch." You absolutely nailed it. It pains me when people work under the assumption that a character has to look 100% on-model in order for the animation to be good when all the greatest animators break form all the time. That defeats the purpose of a lot of animation's core principles.
That's awesome that you shouted out the behind the scenes guys who made it awesome. Now I know who they are. Subscribed just cause of this vid 👍hope you go far man
Hope you liked it! If you didnt binge everything religiously like me (due to nostalgia glasses since i saw only part 1 as a kid. I picked it up again last year to rewatch part 1 then shippuden for the first time.) id recommend finding a site that lists filler episodes so you can skip em, a lot of filler arcs are good but idk if you're the type of person who likes em. Nostalgia aside Naruto is a solid series, not the best, but good.

@@bruh-uq2zx frs. Studio toei spammed that on the goku and jiren fight, I was like, damn why they keep repeating the frames and showing the same fighting sequences 10 episodes ago. Every fight feels the same.
The first major Naruto vs Sasuke fight highlighted here is indeed something Norio Matsumoto needs way more credit for, as he was left to do this fight almost all by himself. Little to no help from other animators to pretty it up for him or us, due to most of the company employees being on strike… because have you ever looked up how much Anime animators are paid, not the big directors, but the grunts? Anyway, I found out via a BBS board back then after the ep aired that week. A member who was a much bigger オタク/Otaku than I was at the time had pointed the strike out to us, because we were wondering why the fight animation quality had shot down so hard on such a significant fight, because we were expecting less muted colors & more of the fight stylings we had beforehand. It turns out that most of the studio’s animation grunts up & went on strike. You have to remember that this was near/during the Recession, so imagine getting paid with ramen, but you’re only getting broth. And the only guy that was willing to have broth only was Norio Matsumoto. This fight was the best he could do on his own. Most Shonen Anime ends up switching from the usual 3 color cell shading to 2 when studios are on a budget &/or short on production time. And if you look at all the fights prior to this, most of them are fleshed out a lot longer in 3 color cell shading - because he had an animation team to back him up. If he wasn’t solo-ing, the heavy 2 tone colors wouldn’t of been so prominent. To give you some info from Art Education, most artists are taught to render Shading Values at a minimum of 9 Tones to make things realistic. Most animators dumb it down to 3 to keep production going & on time… “Ain’t nobody got time for” more than 3 Tones, basically. Unless if your Studio Deen, animate in ~7 Tones,~ & nearly every fight in the Fate Stay series is a near certified spectacle of “yes, we make time for that.” But the only reasons you’d go down to 2 tone cell shading is a lack of production time, money, &/or staff; all 3 were an issue, & Norio Matsumoto picked up the slack as best he could. He needs much more credit for what essentially was a Senior Thesis Project that should’ve taken a minimum of a quarter to complete (which I admit, is not a joy ride), into about 2 weeks or less… On. His. Own. *Shudder.* Just thinking about my own Senior Thesis makes me want to throw myself into a self-care catharsis. Pardon. So more オタク/Otaku out there need to give Norio Matsumoto more props for the crazy conditions he had to work under to meet that deadline, & get that fight to us. Thanks for staying for my TED Talk.
Woah thank you so much for sharing this with us. This was an amazing read. I never knew about this and i thought i knew everything about him lol. But i think we should leave it this way cause in my opinion i always consider this episode 133 to be the greatest animated fight ever in tv episode. The sheer level of combos and craziness Norio pulled off hasn't been matched in a long time bar few episodes. He is the legend for sure and underrated as well. Thanks again its good to hear this. Let me know if you have more stories about him.
The Boruto series has really stiff animation with very few times where animation kicks up. The colors and background art is great but flat and non dynamic, and just doesn't go well together with the lackluster animation. I miss the older series more and more.
Yes you are right there are many times the older series had lower quality animation. But higher quality animation was more often as well as better storytelling. Boruto series is 50-60 episodes in and maybe 1-2 well animated sequences which lasted MUCH less time. Fact is, Naruto has had more overall quality animation than Shippuden. And Shippuden has had more overall quality animation than Boruto if you discount the filler.
The problem is that the animators will have a tough time when it catches up with the manga with Ikemoto's drawing style compared to Kishimoto's (which fell in line with the style the characters are usually designed). And he's not so great at poses either. Doesn't help when he also draws Sarada in inappropriate clothing that the animators will have to switch out for the gaiden clothing. It's just not great reference material to adapt.
As I study this field I must say this was my favorite episode of all of Naruto..it's also very pleasing to actually see the episode's work frame by frame. This content I s AWESOME! My DUDE!!
Wow, that was a really interesting analysis! Thank you for sharing! I watched Bleach after Naruto, and was always disappointed, because the fight scenes in Bleach mostly consist from a flash and then they stop and you wait, which one will hit the ground.
The scenes that had the most impression on my was the one where Sasuke climbs up from under the water to get on top of it after getting knocked down hard by Naruto (the scene is included in this video), the whole fight where the reanimated Madara fights literally whole nations, and the same Madara pulling the whole "what are you going to do about the second one?". The last one in particular was absolutely jaw dropping.
Naruto > one piece > DBZ > fairy tail These anime is legend for me & naruto fight is the best among em, its so fluid and realistic for me, while i was kid i also wondering if i can fight like that lmao tbh naruto have the realistic fight among em like if u got stab by a sharp weapon and you will bleeding, unlike "fairy tail" even if u got hit by sharpest weapon you will still alive and no bleed at all, that's why fairy tail is the worst for me
Thank God for anime keeping traditional animation alive and innovative. But also here’s hoping the animators will eventually be treated, paid and cared for like the valued people and employees they are.

I hate how people be like “don’t pause in naruto” except the animation in those fights are absolutely insane as shown in this video, norio is such a genius
if you pause an actor's performance you will also see them pulling awkward faces. Video is not made to be paused.
Forgive me for asking but what does Sakuga actually mean?

Wait, is there a "weeb" side on the weebs community, holy.
Finally someone else recognizes this..
One stuff that i thought about this video, is that Matsumoto puts the viewer in the perspective of who's getting punched, and drive us in these pains (like Sasuke rolling the water, or Kakashi trying to dodge Kakuzu kicks)
I love hearing about the animators behind the shows,I feel like they don't get much credit for they're ingeniosity, hard work and uniqueness.

I'm so excited, I do a lot of games programming and have been really trying to work on my animation skills! This channel is a God-send find! Definitely subscribing
did you go to school or are you self taught for game programming
At least to me.
have you checked out this book "animators survival kit"? i learnt a lot from it on animation
I feel like the title should of been...
“Analysis of Sasuke getting his ass beat”
Rock Lee v. Gaara is the whole reason why I went into animation. Omggg I loved that fight! Then the fight with Madara v. Shinobi allience then Madara v. Gai then Obito v. Fantastic. I'm far from art and animation, and I never thought about those details. Ty for this video. Very interesting!)
I loved how real, fluid and natural animation felt in scenes like these from Naruto. Orochimaru vs Third Hokage hand to hand combat and facial animation ,was just so high-quality and immersive! Truly genius
Naruto grabbed Sasuke's shirt. Amazing level of detail
People always mocked the facial expressions and the poor animations like the pain v naruto. I always love it and it's hilarious
Pain-VS-Naruto9tailFox have have great animation!
It have great power and energy!

Randal Wagner bro. When orochimaru attacked the village he summoned/resurrected hashirama and tobirama to fight hiruzen. He defeated them but sacrificed himself with the reaper death seal to seal both of the hokages and orochimarus hands so he would never be able to use a justu.

My interest in animation has been growing more over the years and i really want to develop this interest of mine. Your videos have helped me in thinking and finding out more about animation in just a couple of hours
Returning to school in the fall to finish a proper visual design degree, your video is good inspiration to keep me thinking on ways to evolve my craft. Thank you for this! Subscribed!
naruto has the best fight scenes of any anime. I started off watching naruto and have watched countless other animes hoping to get the same feel. But Naruto takes the cake

This is such a good technical breakdown. You really know what you’re talking about.

Unless if your Studio Deen, animate in ~7 Tones,~ & nearly every fight in the Fate Stay series is a near certified spectacle of “yes, we make time for that.”
But the only reasons you’d go down to 2 tone cell shading is a lack of production time, money, &/or staff; all 3 were an issue, & Norio Matsumoto picked up the slack as best he could.
Naruto has amazing animations.. glad there's at least a few people who appreciate that! (Haven't seen many so far)
I agree but, , Boruto pretty much just started, the first 50 episodes aren't from the manga. But The Sakura and Nue fight were well animated.
Boruto is still boring as shit.
True, I was wondering how Studio Periot would design the villains, like Jigen. they have very distinct looks that can't be easily reproduced.
