What a great discussion of a seminal talk.
I remember this Ed Wk talk. I was a sleep deprived new mother and church teacher who planned the family vacation around being in Provo for Ed Wk. I hungered for such certainty of the Great Plan and my role in its fulfillment. But it was, also, such a heartbreaking moment when Packer spoke again and again about not telling the truth. Wait what? Surely I misunderstood. No, he continued to press the point home and then threatened at the end.
This talk was perhaps the 4th item on my shelf (blood oaths on wedding day, bigotry & prstd overturned because of Brazil temple, dismissive attitude toward women) that I would prop up, reinforce, and hide in a locked room of my mind for 40+ yrs. Hidden but not forgotten. Now, I am grateful for his boldness because it demonstrates the ldsp knew the truths and taught, retaught half truths half lies. Shame on him. Shame on all of them.

There should be a class action lawsuit to refund tithing plus interest, based on all this information. Hiding facts and Truth!

Unreal. RFM never disappoints. It scares me how deceiving that speech is.

Doesn't Boyd realize that a contract made under false pretenses is null and void? My baptismal covenant, temple covenants, etc. were all made under false pretenses, because the Mormon church hide a lot of its history from me. The truth can withstand scrutiny. Mormonism isn't the truth, because it cannot withstand scrutiny.

They would just call it 'grandfathered' (actual key term they use) and layer the past into the new. The past would be Easter eggd in lingo and keyword to the new. That's what I observed internally.

It's null and void anyway. You can't legally sign a contract when you are 8 years old.

Cults have a common denominator; 1. the leader(s) speak directly for God, and 2. ignore any and all information contradicting the authority or pronouncements of the leader(s).

Boyd Packer read something that hurt his fragile feelings and he freaked out. What a pathetic man.

Could this be why the visitor centers on Temple Square are being torn down and redone? Destroying what has been taught!

Love this one- so obvious how Boyd K. Packer was yet again "a TOTAL dick", LOL; poor Leonard Arrington! (1981....I was on my mission in Taiwan...) interesting how malleable the "so-called" truth is. I am still disturbed by Hinckley's comments just as much as i was when I first heard them years ago. i wondered, at the time, why Hinckley wouldn't be proud of the doctrine, why hide it? Now, it makes sense -- evidently, Hinckley didn't actually believe this crap himself!!!!

One can never go wrong w an intro that raaaaaawks \,,/. It reminds me of the book of BW CH 3 verse 7: “Behold, I sayeth unto thee, why doth thine intro raaawk so hard? Yea, I feel like banging my head hither and thither and whipping out my air axe for some sick runs up and down the fretboard. Surely thou must be hella blessed for giving thine listeners such a kickass intro, surely the Lord finds it good and shall blesseth RFM and his posterity, for proper raaawk shall never die, lest we cease to bang thy head”

Years ago, probably 2012, Quentin Cook gave a talk at conference essentially saying if you’ve doubted by reading history, you can repent. That was my memory of it anyway.

At 20:00 you talk about the seer stone inclusion in Richard Bushman's Joseph Smith and the beginnings of Mormonism (1984) as the reason that the series got canceled. But here's the deal, there was only one paragraph about the seer stone and that was in the end-notes of the book. So while I don't disagree with your conclusion, I do find it interesting that such a small reference could have such a large impact on the church history department.
