There was once a commercial for South Park that basically said they make fun of everyone and apologize if they left anyone out. They were not singling anyone out, they were being all inclusive and even made fun of themselves.
Forgot to say this earlier. But I remember uninformed young me thinking the whole censoring Muhammad was a joke that South Park chose to do. I didn’t realize till later in life it was actually censored for legit reason.
I'm a Buddhist, and I love what Siddhartha did to help educate humanity. Having said that, I see no problem with anyone making fun of the religion or him. The reason why is because I am very secure in my beliefs and I realize what other people say or think has no impact on me or my beliefs.
I am Christian and I totally agree with you. Any spiritual or religious believer that is SECURE in their own credo will not be concerned with people doing humor(South Park is free expression and thought - provoking humor. Not only should people be able to make fun of religion as adults (16 and up) but I do feel there can be ratings for public performances to protect children from egregious and sensitive topics without parental consent. If it is a forum like public TV or a public performance of egregious material where it was not chosen or paid for directly (could be accidentally viewed innocently), then the entity showing it can make their own judgment - as people should be allowed NOT TO LISTEN to speech / expression also. But there is nothing worse than religion being forced upon others- anathema.
for anyone wondering. theo van gogh (and yes he was distantly related to the artist) was a documentarian that helped ayaan hersi ali, a women that lived through and ultimately escaped horrible abuse, she was hunted for years after her choice to expose this. theo was killed for giving her a voice. her story and his are very interesting, eye opening and inciteful. it was not a hate piece, but the story of women that escaped some of the worst conditions you can imagine.

My reason for watching "South Park" at a young age during the 1990s was due to the show's construction paper-style animation, which looks pretty amusing for a cartoon aimed at a mature audience, and the fact that all my friends at middle school were even able to tune in and watch it as well. XD
Only episode 1 was done that way it was the pilot that took them months to do and the episode that they pitched and made the deal for 2 seasons then parlayed it in to what it has become 1 is still my all time fave love seeing the shadows created by the still frame cut outs and the different mouth shapes for each silible was outstanding
I’ve seen both of these banned episodes, I get the feeling that the final ’South Park’ episode will actually show Muhammad onscreen and make it so that the show is truly banned everywhere, forever.
I never understood how such “religious people” could be so violent while claiming how religious they are. That's like ordering a cheeseburger with no cheese.
I remember when the original episodes aired and was furious with Comedy Central for caving in to censorship. (Although sure I understand why they did.). I’m glad they’ve grown a backbone allowing jokes about China and Winnie the Pooh. 😂
Nostalgia. South Park has really evolved as a show from primarily celebrity bashing and sophomoric humor to becoming pure satire also heavily featuring celebrity bashing and sophomoric humor. It has always been a bastion of free speech and I know that the show has always been satirical and that celebrity bashing is a form of satire, but they keep upping the bar. Just look at how they're the only ones with the balls to address china and their censorship over our content, besides bill maher and every conservative pundit who already hated china.
These where awesome! What a shame these where banned due to fear mongering. Thank you for the run down, at the very least we get to experience these thanks to you. Cheers.
For the Longest time you could still find the Mohammed from Super Best Friends spliced into atleast the season 6 intro. When going back to try to find it on the HBO Max Streams, it seems like replaced with a different scene. I remember this being on the Netflix streamed version and the Hulu streamed version. You can actually still find the original on RUclips.
“There is no way to watch them outside of DVD’s” Is a very telling statement about why DVD’s (and video tapes) are gone. With streaming, the powers that be can make content that they don’t like almost completely disappear from society. Fortunately, I recorded those episodes and have them on VHS, and I still have a working VCR. As for depicting Muhammad,Muslims have every right to criticize other Muslims for depicting him because it’s against their religious beliefs, but non Muslims should not be forced to nor feel the need to follow Islamic law.
these are the episodes that killed off Pip :( for the longest time I hadn't known that since I was only able to catch them once during when they first were allowed to air & I kept wondering why one of my favorite characters wasn't showing up anymore in the show.

Personally I wouldn't have accepted the end speech being censored as it would of explained away the previous censorship of the episode(s) In essence comedy central bowed out to a terrorist threat and that should have been noted which the final speech did. 9:08 sums up how people reacted to the episode at first before Revolution Muslim made a stink of everything, while South Park didn't air in many Muslim countries at the time, many of us (mostly high school and college students) got into the show thanks to the internet to the point when the movie came out and downloads of the film were available, we treated it like an event amongst ourselves. When Super Best Friends, most of us didn't have that strong reactions, on one hand showing Muhammed on screen was an issue but on the other it was nice to see him portrayed in a positive light.
Who is behind the censorship? Where we today over this issue of censorship? 911 was a public snuff film used to shock the public and enact the end of the Bill of Rights & promote the invasion of 7 oil bearing countries, (recall that in Afghanistan the Caspian Sea pipeline had been given to Argentina; Afterward, Condi Rice made huge profits when stolen for Shell Oil); & make money for private companies like Halliburton, (stock from 10 to 50 a share); hide FCC records of naked Bond trading by Timothy Geithner, Larry Summers, etc., that were held in WTC7; and, where the Pentagon had misplaced 2.3 trillion dollars, (the Pentagon accounting office was hit by a missile & thereby destroying all the evidence & killing the witnesses - rather than a Nuclear power plant)! Look at the result today! Our masters control the world around us - completely! Including the dissemination of information! LinkedIn (owned by Microsoft) terminated my account for posting a peer-review scientific article. At the end of the 18th century, starting with the French Revolution, monarchies were challenged and began to fall apart. The development of the printing press - the Guttenberg Press - precipitated the end of monarchy, formalized the end of the dark ages, and ushered in an age of democracy. The printing press democratized knowledge and access to knowledge. Suddenly the common man had access to information, technology, data that had been exclusively in the domain of the elite nobility (and the church). Banning peer-review scientific research begs the question: Is it our masters intentions therefore, to bring back the dark ages and usher in neo-feudalism? Legally, Tech Companies cannot stop free speech The issue is whether the Constitution and the Bill of Rights can limit the actions of private actors. The issue has been tried: the court in Marsh v. Alabama (1946) ruled that a privately owned company town was subject to First Amendment principles even though it was technically private. “Ownership does not always mean absolute dominion,” wrote Justice Hugo Black in recognizing the free-speech rights of a Jehovah’s Witness to distribute literature on the company-owned streets. “The more an owner, for his advantage, opens up his property for use by the public in general, the more do his rights become circumscribed by the statutory and constitutional rights of those who use it.” In recent times, courts recently found in dicta that social media spaces were akin to the ‘public square,’ and access to them could not be blocked by the state. In short, the internet is a public forum, akin to a public street or park [aka it falls under the Public Forum Doctrine in law]. Some Supreme court justices, like U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, in an opinion on a 2017 First Amendment case, said as much. [Packingham v. North Carolina] Under the public forum doctrine, the government is affirmatively obliged to dedicate property to the public's use for free speech purposes, and within such public forums free speech rights are accorded their greatest protection. [1] Because Facebook, Twitter, etc., hold a substantive public forum, they fall under the Public Doctrine Law where by self-interested tech companies cannot unilaterally govern online discourse. Simply put, online platforms are constitutionally held to First Amendment standards. I find it ironic that Trump was shot down in the courts for trying to block a critic on his Twitter account, (see Knight First Amendment Institute for Columbia University v. Trump). In that case the justice determined that this interactive space - Twitter - was a DESIGNATED PUBLIC FORUM and that the president could not discriminate against speakers because of their viewpoints. The Appeals court concurred. If tech companies want to argue for protections under Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, they have to meet a pretty high standard, (e.g., their free speech code cannot be vague; must be constituent in rule and implementation; must not be intrusive; and, must achieve legitimate public interest objectives when infringing on speech). How about hate speech or those invoking violence? According to Shannon Martinez, program manager for Free Radicals Project, a group that provides support for those seeking to leave hate groups, “In America, however, we do not have laws which govern or define hate speech per se”. Under the First Amendment, hate speech is a form of protected speech unless it crosses the line into narrow unprotected categories of speech, such as true threats, incitement to imminent lawless action, or fighting words. Controversy abounds over what actually constitutes hate speech. In Whitney v. California (1927), Justice Louis Brandeis wrote that the preferred remedy to harmful expression is “more speech, not enforced silence.” To find more information about this topic, Google: “Public Doctrine Law and Internet” [1] scholarship.law.gwu.edu/faculty_publications/838/ So why hasn't the DOJ sued the tech companies? Because the limitation of free speech is precisely what government wants!

My reason for watching "South Park" at a young age during the 1990s was due to the show's construction paper-style animation, which looks pretty amusing for a cartoon aimed at a mature audience, and the fact that all my friends at middle school were even able to tune in and watch it as well. XD

South Park is such a great show. Especially the earlier season's.
Legally, Tech Companies cannot stop free speech
The issue is whether the Constitution and the Bill of Rights can limit the actions of private actors. “The more an owner, for his advantage, opens up his property for use by the public in general, the more do his rights become circumscribed by the statutory and constitutional rights of those who use it.”
In recent times, courts recently found in dicta that social media spaces were akin to the ‘public square,’ and access to them could not be blocked by the state.
North Carolina]
Under the public forum doctrine, the government is affirmatively obliged to dedicate property to the public's use for free speech purposes, and within such public forums free speech rights are accorded their greatest protection. [1]
Because Facebook, Twitter, etc., hold a substantive public forum, they fall under the Public Doctrine Law where by self-interested tech companies cannot unilaterally govern online discourse.
California (1927), Justice Louis Brandeis wrote that the preferred remedy to harmful expression is “more speech, not enforced silence.”
To find more information about this topic, Google: “Public Doctrine Law and Internet”
[1] scholarship.law.gwu.edu/faculty_publications/838/
So why hasn't the DOJ sued the tech companies? Because the limitation of free speech is precisely what government wants!
“We are a peaceful and loving religion”
“We will respond to your defamation of Muhammad with violence”
