    Brilliant testing! This kind of test is exactly what I was looking for weeks! But I'm still not convinced what device I should buy. Microsoft is going to present in October the Surface Pro 6. Propably a reason to stall the buy. My main field of use is taking notes at university lectures and I would like to be able to draw also exactly geometry objects.

      I'm looking forward to the new Surface Pros too. Hopefully more powerful and even better battery. And larger screen.

      Brandon S I tested the Surface Go and it has an awful writing experience... the digitizer is not as responsive as the Surface Pro it does (btw it is even worse than the iPad 2018). On the other hand I want to use an OS which doesn't regulate me to use only Apps for the Microsoft Store as Windows S-Mode. For example I would like to use Eclipse IDE and math programs.

      So now that Microsoft hasn't made any updates to the Pro6 which would you buy now? Sure the i5 is the new base. Still the same exact form factor... same screen, garbage cameras, and raking you over the coals for all accessories, etc. I find it hard to justify the Pro6 or other Pro models. Seems very much like Microsoft doesn't want artists using their machines while other manufacturers are catering to them.

    I just bought a Lenovo Yoga 930C and waiting for it to be delivered. I hope it's going to be a good combo laptop and drawing tablet. They added a garage for the pen so they fixed one of the major gripes about the Miix 520. It looks like the drawing capability should be pretty good based on what I see here assuming their range of computers behave similarly. Thanks for the review.

    Teoh, the surface pro did have a very annoying issue that also manifested a bit different than from the example that you showed. The line would hop and skip .. for example -if you drew a dotted straight line , every dot would appear very different, in different positions and it also acted different depending on what part of the screen you drew on.. it was very hard to do accurate work in many situations... This issue was present over a year since launch but FINALLY it has been fixed with some of the latest Windows updates... So if you had the latest updates, you wouldn't see it. Perhaps only if you dived deep into testing before the updates..
    Great review as always!
    Keep up the awesome work!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 лет назад

      Is there a name to the update or it's just through the regular Windows update within the OS?

    • @mats77
      @mats77 6 лет назад

      Teoh Yi Chie : thanks for the reply.
      It was released on 8/8/18 via the regular Windows update on the surface device and I think it was "Surface - Firmware - 429.0.1.10" (in that days update package) that fixed it.
      The link below shows the enormously large (and long Microsoft thread about the issue)
      answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpronew-surfdrivers/surface-pro-intermittent-pen-inaccuracy-when-hand/28ef8566-0003-4c68-a964-6c2562423eb0
      from what I've seen - most people are happy now. This includes myself! (I upgraded from surface pro 3 and was originally very disappointed)

I'm in the market for a detachable windows tablet. It's sad there are very few choices left. The manufacturers lost interest. In canada, there is the surface pro 7 and the 520 at a discounted price. Not a true apple to apple comparison. Is the Surface pro 7 worth the $550 difference?
    Lenovo 520, $1100 cad, includes pen and keyboard, 8/256 GB, 8th gen i7
    Pro: incredible value, includes pen and keyboard, good performance, more money left over for accessories
    Con: fan noise, thick bezels, discontinued, dated model, battery life, screen resolution
    Surface Pro 7, $1650 cad, pen and keyboard, 8/128 GB, 10th gen i5
    Pro: best in class, screen resolution, silent, 10 th gen cpu
    Con: price poor value, battery life less than SP6, dated design, pen and keyboard sold separately

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  5 лет назад

      SP6 is more worth the money. It still has the quad core which is reasonably powerful. And the price is lower since the SP7 is out.

    • @sitoudien9816
      @sitoudien9816 5 лет назад

      @@teohyc Thanks for responding. SP6 has no USB c. No modern port is a deal breaker.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  5 лет назад

      @@sitoudien9816 Well, if you use a lot of USB C devices then it may make sense to get SP7 for that port. But for price and value, SP6 is good simply because it so much cheaper now. SP6 i5 256GB is US $800 while SP7 is $400 more. Not having USB C to save $400 makes more sense to me. You can use the saving to get the Surface Pen, maybe even extended warranty.

    What's the actual difference between the Miix 520 and the 510? I'm on the verge of buying a 510 for a good deal.
    I assume I can buy the Active Pen 2 later if I do not like the plastic against glass with the included Active Pen 1? Or are there replacement nibs for the Pen 1 with softer feel?
    Thank you for all your reviews!

      @thomaswesen7181 6 лет назад

      Thank you for answering.
      I'm looking at the lower spec 510 (i3, 4GB, 128GB). I tried out Sketchbook Pro on my ordinary laptop with an old i5 which should be equivalent in speed to the 6th gen i3 in the Miix 510 and it was super fluid even with large brushes and canvas, so I'm kind of hopeful that the i3 will suffice.
      But screen and build quality should be the same 510-520?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 лет назад +1

      Screen and build quality are similar

      @thomaswesen7181 6 лет назад

      Thank you, and I'm sorry to be bothering you, it's just rare to find someone who has experience with all these cool art devices.
      One last question, if you have the time.
      Would you recommend the Miix 510 (i3,4GB,128GB) or the Surface Book 13" (the original 1, not 2, with i5,8gb,128gb) for drawing? Prices would be 320 USD for Miix 510 and 530 USD for Surface Book, so not super big difference in price but still some.

    Hi,
    Do we need screen protector(not only for miix 520 and surface pro, but for any 2 in 1 device that supports pen input) if we are using pen intensely or even moderately or lightly??

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 лет назад +2

      You don't really need screen protector. The pen tip is plastic against glass so it's not going to scratch. A proper flip case that protects the front is good enough. When wiping, it's best to dust off the screen before wiping in case there are hard dust bits.

    The metal touching offset issue has been greatly improved since some recent firmware update, so much that it's almost a non-issue now. The offset was really unbearable before this, so much so that many of us had to use alternative 3rd party pens, and some people are still affected, and the SB2 has it too. Your original SP2017 pen review sadly overlooked this. If reviewers like you reported about this issue earlier, we could have had a fix much earlier, instead of more than a year later.

    • @JohnSmith-gb8hd
      @JohnSmith-gb8hd 6 лет назад +1

      Btw, it's touching metal while palm rests on screen, that was the issue.

    Btw, you can improve battery life and memory usage by using tablet mode in combination with proper WinRT/UWP apps, since they will automatically suspend in the background while switching between apps. This is why we should urge developers to get away from Win32, since it is holding back Windows battery efficiency compared to iPads and Android tablets.
    It's also, why I only draw in Sketchable, Sketchbook UWP, and Concepts.

    • @JohnSmith-gb8hd
