i just bought this board for 200€ which has an original price of 599€ in Germany. i bought it together with an i5 12600kf which i later replace with an 14700k. my i7 7700k z170 system is around 7-8 years old and i hope the z690 sys will last as long as the old one. board looks very promising to me. great review. subbed!
planning to get this board with a 14700k as well. How has it been performing for you so far? Im guessing you had to update the BIOS for 14th gen?
@@Cheeeeetah i'm still waiting for the other part's of my order but when i have everything together and running i will let you know how it looks and feels. all my Asus boards before at z170 and p35 chipsets performed very well so i think the z690 will do it too.
so, as i promised, i'm back here when my new sys is up and running. to first answer your question about the compatibility of 14th gen processors, the z690 Strix E as well as the Strix F which i'm finally using now came with bios 2602 which i capable of handling all 14th gen chips. but it would be no problem if not because you have the bios flash back function in which you need nothing but power on the board to flash the unpacked bios file from an usb drive. atm, i'm on bios 3501, drivers and everything from the Asus page on a fresh w11 and the Strix F is running like a dream. btw&fyi i finally took the Strix F over the E bec the m2 x5 slot on the Strix E is completely useless bec it is sharing lanes with the 16x PciE graphics card slot over Cpu. if you use an ssd on the upper m2 slot your gracard only runs at 8x. i was trying it and had occasional stutters and laggs in games and w11 itselfs. the Strix F has three m2 slots which are from the z690 chipset and one x4 over Cpu with the same problem of shared lanes. the Strix E only has two over the chipset but it has the hyper m2 card and it looks a little bit better. finally i'm very happy with the Strix F. my 12600kf is running with 5 GHz at P and 4 GHz at E cores without any fancy settings and completely game & OCCT stable. in every game i play i have well over 100fps. my 12600kf is parking cores very often but even then it feels so much faster than my 7700k sys. the bios of the board, the layout especially the backpanel packed with usb 3.2 and all that, everything is perfect like on all the Asus boards i had before. the VRM cooling blocks around the Cpu are very large so i couldn't put my Arctic 240 mk3 Aio not on the top of my case. so i installed it on the front with pushing cold air in. Meteor Lake will have no IPC gains only consumption goes down. so z690 is the right decision for the moment.
doing the same mobo with either the 13700kf or 12900k
Just bought one and a i9 12900, so thanks for the information. Made me more comfortable over my purchase! 😎👍
how's the mobo and i9 doing so far?
Same here along with 64gb of dominator 5200 ram, looking forward to building it up!

Australians beware: Wifi 6E does not work (currently)
ACMA has not finalised their decision on the extended bands used by Wifi 6E yet, so we won't receive any benefit of the Wifi 6E chip over a Wifi 6 one. It's currently in the consultation phase, which closes 3rd December and a full decision some time after that. Given the news that they intend to do it earlier than WRC 2023, it'll probably be enabled via an update in 2022 or early 2023.
The motherboard is 900 AUD. If you buy this board you're throwing away a lot more money than whatever the extra cost of Wi-Fi 6E over Wi-Fi 6 is.
the moment he said 900 aud imm out fam ✌
Ridiculous isn't it. Can't believe how expensive parts are these days
😂😂😂
Have always bought the maximus wifi but this seems to be exactly on par with the maximus standards. No need to spend an extra $200 for the Maximus name. Glad I scooped this board and 12900kf at launch, I just have to get rid of the z690-H or whatever came combo'd with my gskill ddr5 5600 sticks from the newegg shuffle now.
i did the newegg shuffle as well. 6000MHz sticks, but I want a 14900K to slap into this mobo
Been building gaming PC for over 18 years and I have to say that its worth spending on better quality boards just for that higher quality VRM if you are pushing your system hard.
What motherboard would you suggest?
@@porkrinds_ this one. it's still available. just make sure to put a 14900K on it and get a 1000w power supply if you are going to pair it with a 4090 GPU
Last time I was this early GPU's where at MSRP all over the globe.
you haven’t been early for a long time I see
Good review and I really appreciate your power delivery components listing, that alone makes the sale to me!
how much do i have to donate to make you stream and talk about news and finance again? lol. i put the bell on to watch your unlisted streams. my buddy listened to me and made 100k usd off nvidia and amd stocks in the last 4 months.
I'll get onto it soon. Just busy in between getting a backlog done.
@@techyescity nice np bryan just miss your streams. thanks bro.
8-10-2022 I just bought this on Amazon prime and it will be here this Saturday, but the CPU Water Block will take another week, so that was too bad for Me...LOL
I also ordered: i9-12900K 5.2Ghz and Corsair Vengeance 64GB DDR5 5200MHz and a Thermaltake W9 cpu water block.
My rig is over 5 years old and the only parts I can reuse is the case and power supply and My gpu is a 2080Ti Black Edition with a EVGA water block added.
I like flying in DCS World and was willing to spend the money if it will vastly improve My Flight sim experience.

What a great mobo this is. thanks for the great review.
I just ordered this MB along with a 12900k and 64 GB of corsair dominator 5200 ram, really looks like a great board. Thanks for sharing the info!
Should have went for a 12600K, great cpu, way cheaper.
@@2psah2 who's to say he can't afford the 12900k? not everyone's broke.
@@guacfiend Thanks for having my back! Yep I wanted the top tier cpu so I went for it!!
I have a rog strix z590-E Gaming with a i7 11700k and I’m really happy with this motherboard I don’t see the need upgrade as it’s only one generation and on top that just doesn’t seem willing as it’s very similar to the last generation but the rog strix boards are personally my favorite if you are over clocking as it makes it so much easier and has so much features.
This is the exact combo I am doing. 32gb's of Corsair Dom. RGB. Crazy thing I'm not a gamer but build all my PC's. Actually going to use onboard graphics. I'm at $3100 with no GPU. Prices are nuts but I want a really nice build. My 8 year old system in it's HAF X can't do Win11 and I will need that for business. Case the CM HAF 700 EVO. 1000watt Seasonic Ti.
Funny thing is I haven't kept up with the tech so I needed a refresher course. I was all set on the Prime Z690 A. Being out of tech for so long I had no idea BT depended on a WIFI chip for a desktop now. What! I found out by accident on a comparison. I know it could be added but I wanted it included so this board hit all the marks.
I have this board, now with a 13900K in it, it works flawless. First you have to update ME, then the bios, and there you go.....
How did you update the bios ?
Pci-e x16 slot 1 falls back to X8 if there is a nvme ssd in the first M.2 slot....
Like the outro music better now :-) Dont get me wrong, I like C&C but it was a bit loud/unbalanced in my point of view the past few videos. The new outro music suits better I guess. Like!
All of these Z690 boards are offensively expensive - even the base models. Just Intel being Intel and trying to screw early adopters for margins before Ryzen 6000 series comes out.
I've got the X570 version of this board, which has the same power delivery as the stupid expensive crosshair. Although the X570-E strix was also overpriced when it came out. It also got a price drop to a reasonable price, I wonder if the Z690 version will do the same.
I have that one too. My buddy built it for me after helping him scrap trade in machines many times for good parts. I kicked in like 450 or so and he paid for everything else as he gave me some options if I wanted to kick some more in. I think it was around 350 but he probably has a vendor deal with his suppliers. I ended up with a 3900x in mine and put another 16gig of ram to get it up to 32. Too bad they get hosed even worse down under:(
I paid $389 😬
@@mattnielsen7639 Decent boards have certainly gotten expensive. I never would have built mine without all the free parts he gave me for helping him. I seem to remember really top end boards used to be 150-200 but not anymore. 😟
Just got one for $300
Jus got one for 225
Drop 67 bucks on for GST and its still about 80 overprice
I think I have the same sound chip on my strix B550-F WiFi
In the UK this board is £499.99 (inc Vat 20%) so £416.66 ex vat. That gets you to a little over $772 AUD + taxes. So the UK is a rip off too lol.
i reset my mobo and when i put pc on i got in screen at activation key was gone its never happen before.( asus tuf gaming x570-plus )
On the z690 hero the backplates of the m.2 coolers don't touch the ssd... It's a shame this lack of attention to something so obvious.
@Brendan Hero does infact have m.2 pcle 5.0. Where it lacks is that it does not supporr displayport
WOW! 2 x 8 pins for CPU... the hell of a thing I've seen this morning. Since when?
Asus pricing on all their components is disgusting
@Brendan even in murica
Great board, but Asus could think of delivering better at a competive price, instead, they keep on increasing the price on every single component compared to other major brands! It might appeal to rich pockets, but not to the simple mass that looks for value purchase! Nonetheless, amazing review Bryan, especially your audio testing is very unique from other reviewers that is often disregarded!!
This is not intended to be a "value purchase" board.
Complain elsewhere.
How is internet BIOS updates secured. That sounds like a security hole for those exploits that require physical access to the device.
Awesome video! Do you think the onboard sound chip would be good enough to power my Beyerdynamic Dt990 pro's with 250 ohms?
I really would like to build an alderlake system, but unfortunately ddr5 is non-existent.
It does indeed. I scored this board in a bundle with G skill Trident Z5 5600 from Newegg. You just have to try hard and keep checking.
Skip ddr5 ans go ddr4 board anyways ddr5 is loke cas latency 40....a solid CL16 or 14 3600 MHz DDR4 kit is way better
Don't forget if you add the M.2 card it disables the the other pci5 slot
Just picked up one for $280 due to being old lol. Im not a Gamer so it being older model doesnt bother me.
What is a good cooler for this motherboard? I was thinking the attic freezer Ii but I heard compatibility issues?
It’s actually $449 in the USA…
come to brazil they will never complain for pricing again
Is msi carbon mpg z690 better than this?
hi, as regards overclocking / tolerance to high overclocking and longevity and durability (in overclocking) is the tuf gaming z690 plus or the prime z690 p better?
Recommendation for new ITX builds?
Why pay so much for this transitory product, when waiting can see the AMD AM5 platform with highly likely more power efficiency coming out when DDR5 memory will have come down in price.
People who always are waiting for the next great tech rarely pull the trigger on anything because by the time that comes out you have already read about the next gen.
nice review
Price for Z690 Asus LU is too much compare to it's competitors. Bios is the only thing that is nice.
I have this and had nothing but trouble with the ethernet lan. it just wont stay connected. its an issue many people are having with intels i225-v network controller. do not buy one of these boards
Did you take the plastic off the supreme fx logo and the logo at the bottom right above the third m.2 slot? Both of those are hard to take off so I’m just wondering if they’re supposed to stay on there or if it needs to be removed. Thanks
I don't like the huge cover on the left. It's probably conflicting with air coolers.
It's also probably loaded with Asus's thermal strips to dissipate heat on the components underneath.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I had one of my Corsair dominator DDR5 Sticks die on me.
Thanks man
I got one of this model just with i9 13900k, team 32gb 6400 and RTX 3070TI, but you know if the error display can display cpu temp
personally I think your better off getting the F gaming over the E gaming save your self $170 because the different between them isn't major at least imo
Enermax has a phat blk Friday sale rite nao
Whats the biggest difference between the Z690-E and Z690-F ?
Does this motherboard safely support 2 AIO coolers? I have 1 for my GPU and 1 for my CPU!
Is the performance vs price justifiable? You can get a B550 Tomahawk for NZ$300 and wait to get the newest AM4 chip set in Jan/Feb and beat the 12900k for much less money...? Or just upgrade the current B550/X570 at the time for the price of the CPU and sell the old one off to those still using B450/X470 MBs?
Hi Bryan, hope you're doing well. May I please have your help? I cannot find an answer for this for the life of me. I'll try to keep it short.
PC in question
i7 9700k
16gb DDR4
RTX 2080
2TB SSD
750 Watt 80+ Gold
My brother has an rtx 2080 that is not performing as it should. We're talking much lower than 2080 performance in pretty much any game he plays, even his friend's 1660 super started to outperform him at one point, and no, nothing is overheating and nothing is overclocked at the moment. So I decided to put my personal card, the 2080ti in his pc thinking his gpu was acting funny and low and behold, my 2080ti starts to perform terribly as well. I later put it back in my rig and it's performing as normal again. But while I was working on my brother's pc, I ended up temporarily swapping every part except for the psu and motherboard with no different results. Saying all that, which part do you think could be the culprit here? I want to believe it is the motherboard because it is a lower end board (gigabyte b365m dS3h) but I always had the impression that the motherboard doesn't affect your performance unless you're overclocking? I could be very wrong on that though. Have you ever experienced something like this?
Any advice would be appreciated, have an awesome day.
I will answer tomorrow for you in question of the day!

Should would you suggest waiting for the remake of 690 hero?
Hey Brian I'm curious, do you use windows 11 now or just for videos?
Been using on my main rig now for a little while actually, but there are some pet peeves.
i also use windows 11 its not that bad considering the trash z390 asus prime m plus motherboard and old 9700k cpu i am using
what's the difference between the F-gaming and the E-gaming thanks for video can't decide between the 2.
I have a F gaming mobo and the two differences I see are: 1) F-gaming has standard heat sink for top M.2 slot. 2) F-gaming does not have the M.2 expansion device for two additional SSDs.
Waiting on DDR5 memory to complete my build.
What is the difference between this and msi z690 unify x which one is better?
can u review msi pro z690 a ddr4
I’ve got a audio interface from uad it’s the thunderbolt 3 type, will this mobo works with this interface?
Is there an enhancements tab under the sound tab for audio playback?
Anyone know if the back i/o cover always stays blue/purple? It looked like in the video that there was some rgb but every photo I see is blue/purple.
only rich people's mother board that one wow but nice
Added to my short list, but I would prefer a DDR4 Z690 at this point in time.
As DDR5 is a bit of a bust (at the moment anyway).
They have one...strix z690-a gaming wifi
Seems a bit rough that you have to go up to the MAXIMUS Hero in the ROG range to get onboard power/reset buttons so...a $AUD200 premium _using PCCaseGear's pricing_.
*For those trying to purchase DDR5... the shortage isn't the memory chips themselves (they're on the lesser used 14nm node) but rather the PMIC (power management integrated circuit) chip used on the DDR5 module. *Procurement for this chip according the the supplier 12chip is currently estimated to be 35 weeks.*
I got DDR5 RAM from PC Case Gear on Sunday. It's now sold out.
Hears $900+, - nope, nope, nope (walks out the door)
I get a yes SOS detected error! Does this mean the photo can yes be repaired?
Is this MB a good option for NVidia 4090?
You should definitely have both those 8pin cpu power plug filled.
I'm confused by the overclocking part of the review. At about 1:40 to 1:50, he is saying "With a high-end water cooling setup, you might be able to get to 5.2Ghz."
My stock, non-overclocked 12900k goes to 5.2Ghz with intel's "turbo" (factory overclocking, basically) without any issues whatsoever.
Is he talking about running all performance cores at 5.2Ghz at the same time or something?
Nevermind, the question is answered directly after, in the video. :D It IS all-core overclocking that he's talking about.
But no xeons!
I love the xeon builds... its so much performance for the price!
Careful with this one, getting intermittent freezing with this board in windows, cause unknown so far
Is this motherboard's rgb customisable?
I bought a gigabyte z690 ultra from NE, for $560 with shipping. Way better than this one.
I have this board and the 12900K with DDR5 6000. I have mine clocked at 5GHz @ 1.23V. I can't imagine going over 1.4V. What makes me mad about this board is if you use the M.2_1 port (top) it switches your GPU to x8 instead of x16. I originally bought the Asus Hero which didn't have this problem... but I ended up having to return the Hero because it was a fire hazard due to misplaced capacitors/mosfets. I can't believe Asus would give you an M.2 Gen 5 port and then take lanes from the GPU. WTF Asus!?!
I'm not a computer engineer so I don't understand Asus' reasoning on this. Maybe the PCIE 5.0 spec that increases bandwidth on the lanes so 16 is not needed. Since there are not 5.0 GPUs or nvmes yet, you effectively loose on m.2 slot on the board. That stinks. When I do my build, I'm going to be forced to use the bottom 2 m.2 slots to avoid lanes taken away from the GPU.
@@thomaswoodford9511 Yea, I returned it and picked up the Maximus Formula. I can use all M.2 slots and it doesn't pull from the GPU lanes. Probably disables a few SATA drives... but that I can live with.
Instead of returning the board, you could also read the manual from time to time... m.2_1 is rated for pcie 5.0 (one of the few boards to support that, even though you can't benefit from it yet) and as such it will split the pcie 5.0 lanes with the CPU. M.2_2 IS STILL connected to the CPU, and not the chipset, and it offers 4 lanes of pcie 4.0 without splitting the GPU lanes. Alder Lake -- 16 pcie 5.0 lanes and 4 pcie 4.0 lanes. Hope that makes sense.
@@RaphaelZN2301 I have 3 M.2 drives. Slots M.2_2 and M.2_3 are taken. I need M.2_1, but the minute it detects a M.2_1 it splits the lanes. And you can't turn it off. Even by specifying it as a Gen 4 M.2. I definitely read the manual. Numerous times. Nice try though.
@@decibal7532 I suspect that's why they include the m.2 card. Anyway, not trying to defend this board, just wanted to clarify why it splits the GPU lanes, because alder lake has only 16 5.0 lanes only for the gpu (and ofc it's irrelevant if you manually change it to 4.0 in the bios because it still taps in those 16 GPU lanes, because that's how it's wired with the 1st m.2 slot). The remaining 4 lanes coming from the CPU are only 4.0 and in the case of this MB are wired to m.2_2.
One question i rly dont get out of the manual from the z690-e ... if i get a i9-12900k and put my 3080ti on the pci-e 16x 5.0 lane (first one) and my pcie x1 soundcard (soundblaster xae5) on the last lane which is pcie 4.0 x8. Do i share lanes with my 3080ti then? Because the CPU can only handle 20 Lanes so 16 get used by 3080ti and there are only 4 left but if i put my soundcard on the x8 it puts down my 3080ti to 8 lanes too right? Because i cant use the x1 pcie lane cuz my 3080ti is just to big...
The bottom pcie lane is controlled by the chip set.

With this motherboard
intel motherboards & expensive, name a better combo
All of the ASUS z690 mb's are overpriced when compared to other brands for features offered.
Also the current z690 strix boards the way the heat sinks are designed will not fit the most popular big air coolers which I think was a mistake in design because many builders still prefer air over water cooling.
I have used ASUS boards in my past builds and actually have a z490 strix gaming -e board in that and that board sold for around $300 USD.
For the current Alder Lake build I am doing it was time to switch to another brand.
naw the z690 better tho
I have this board and I would have never thought to use an aircooler for a motherboard this expensive.
@@eddyr4984 Considering the cooler whether air or liquid is cooling the cpu and not the motherboard what difference does the cost of the MB have on choosing the cooler method or style? Makes no sense at all!
@@billwiley7216 actually a fair amount but sure you can run both however, Air cooling can only cool so much. The better the air cooling the bulkier the size . Typically an expensive mobo like this you’re gonna use the 12900k or 12700k . If you overlock or do anything resource intensive you’re gonna want the benefits of water cooling efficiency of heat transfer over air cooling. Sure modern air coolers can cool a lot up to a certain point but they also are bulky , loud , and inefficient. I honestly can’t think of a single situation in the high end desktop pc market where I would recommend air Cooling for any reason. Any modern aio or custom loop is way better .
@@eddyr4984 In reality the only difference in cooling ability for the air cooling solution versus the water cooling solution is the amount of time it takes for the cooler to reach its cooling capacity which is actually defined by the ambient temperature of the environment or room the pc is in.
A water cooled device will initially take longer to reach that maximum level but both will eventually reach a level where they will not be able to cool the pc below whatever the ambient temperature may actually be.
A large air cooler generally is cheaper. will basically last forever with at the most needing a fan replacement and you never have to worry about a pump failure or cooling leaks that actually shorts out system components and fries your pc! Many AIO liquid solutions are famous for a fairly limited pump life span requiring replacement of the entire cooler. No thanks, be my guest. I love the simplicity and safety of air cooling.
Hi, can DDR4 memory be paired on this board?
No. So far all boards are either or. Not both.
Hello! can this motherboard use DDR4 Memory?

I would be interested to know what quantity of sales Asus expect to make with this board.
