  • The Kill Team Warhammer 40k recruit edition starter set is, as I summarise in this video, really good value. Both internally and based on similar products from other manufacturers. £65 for this is, frankly, the most competitively priced GW product in years.

    This is actually the most "Starter Box" Starter Box I even remember from GW. Low Key entry point, actually all necessary Rules, enough models to play a decent Game and even some Terrain chucked in. And If you See the prices of Krieg + Kommandos + that Accessoires Set with gauges, Markers, Rules and barricades, the Deal does get even better. That amount of value is absolutely out of character for current GW and seems Like a step in the right direction and, which might be more important, two other things: 1) GW reinforces their commitment to KT and their efforts to establish it in the growing skirmish market as a dominant system.
    2) someone there is actually analysing the market, customer behaviour and expectations and coming up with at least some correct assumptions.
    So...color me intrigued.

    When I got into Warhammer a few years ago I didn’t know kill team existed and I dreaded buying loads of models for an army so I bought a start collecting seraphon and then start collecting skinks. I thought it was a decent AoS army then discovered kill team. My last two purchases (other than paints) have been this box so me and my dad could learn it and then T’au pathfinders as I love the T’au. And even though there isn’t enough terrain for a proper game we just made our own

    I am exceptionally happy that they decided to do the recruit edition book. When I got into 40k 8th I loved the small little book that walked you through the game step by step. It was the Start of COVID lockdowns when I got it and I had no one who knew how to play the game and it was decent fun!
    Hopefully these starter kits will help more new players for getting into the game!

      That's not the main problem. It would be annoying but manageable if the parts were numbered sequentially based on sprue, rather than model.
      The instructions would be "use parts 1, 2, 20 and 38" but it would at least give you an idea which sprues to find the pieces. As it is, the instructions are "use parts 1, 2, 3 and 4" but neglect to tell you that the parts are sprinkled across three sprues in random places.

    I got Octarius as my first foray into Kill Team but am thinking this might be good for the Recruit book (as a new player), extra terrain, and to have all mini options. Would love a video on how to optimize kill team options if you have this and octarius (I think you mentioned you were considering this, so this is my vote for that).
    I still have to put Kill Team together, but I am really just trying to create a collection that gives room for variety in my games. I will only be playing at home with my son and so I am fielding both kill teams.

    Good to see a reasonable price point for something. Still very displeased with the quality and price for dungeonbowl last year. So what rules for the teams are missing. Guard missing orders, and like artillery support, plus the bonus secondary choices. Orks missing charge from conceal. Do they still have their ploys and equipment in this new book? Seems like the guard are in trouble with this terrain and rules set even worse than octarius.

    Curious what’s the difference between the octarious box and the starter box ?

    • @ivansmirnov7342
      @ivansmirnov7342 2 года назад +1

      It’s a little too late, but this starter set while being a good value lacks not only terrain but also lacks Tac ops cards. And you need those for a proper match if you want to stick to the rules 100%. You get those in the Octarius set.
      Octarius comes with an Octarius book instead of the recruit one. The recruit one contains data sheets for the units and tutorial missions.
      Octarius book has full rules for both factions (equipment, strategic and tactical ploys, etc.). It has full set of missions that could be played individually or as a part of a big Octarius narrative campaign.
      If you are not sure if you want to spend big money on kill team yet - go for this starter set. Full Octarius terrain can be bought separately. Faction rules can be easily found online (God bless wahapedia). So really the only thing you are missing out on is the cards. Which again could be bought separately but the basic starter plus terrain already cost the same as Octarius box so this way you will pay more.
      You could start with the basic starter and then expand with Octarius. The terrain is nice. Cards. Additional models to build all the Krieg and Kommando options (the boyz are fine as is but the nob has two weapon options and both can be useful against different teams).
      I personally bought Octarius and now want to buy the basic starter for the minis.

    MCP is probably the best comparison game. MCP is slightly better value as you don’t need to buy an extra box and cards on top of the starter. The scenery included is roughly equivalent as both seem to have about half what you’d want for full on play. The MCP rules are obviously better than the Kill Team rules, but differences in local scene aside it’s probably easier to find people who either already play or who are interested in trying it. In the end it would probably come down to do you prefer the Marvel or 40K IP. For a GW starter that’s pretty amazing.

      I have to say, I would be highly interested in MCP but the prices are, at least in my Neck of the Woods, ridiculous even compared to GW.

      What is wrong with deadzone 3.0? It is a valid game.

      @@marcocardoso8745 in the UK the prices compare very favourably with GW. £70 to £80 for a starter with two complete teams that can be used to make a decent competitive roster, then between £15 and about £60 per unit, with the £40 units being roughly equivalent of the baby Imperial Knights. I guess the cheaper units generally coming in boxes with two units in can make it less attractive, but that’s X-Wing money rather than 40K money. I suppose you could argue that for Kill Team the £30 to £40 boxes have five or ten units in, but in terms of force orgs for both games boxes are roughly equivalent I think.

      @@colinmack8655 I’m sure it is if there’s any sort of local scene. The fact that I t doesn’t figure on the ICv2 lists so that doesn’t speak to a wide player base, and MCP has been above AoS in that measure. Opportunity to play is very much part of the value proposition IMO. Is there a Deadzone tournament scene?

    Good price point. This will allow me to get another set of Krieg and Orks to build out all the options… oh, and an in-store GW coin! I have to applaud GW’s marketing strategy here: it’s good for certain Octarius adopters and it’s good for beginners - get them hooked and they’ll be buying the expansions and terrain in no time.

    Jokes on us, the ork sprue is so terribly coordinated because whoever set up the sprues was a big lore guy and knows orks have no logic to them

    They really need to do a better job with their labeling products like this. As a new player/collector its so fucking confusing with all these box sets. They toss into the mix Starter sets like this, Recruit edition; and I assume they will like with regular 40k Starter box have Elite and or command versions as well. Just browsing the internet to see what will be available is a land mine of confusion as they are all labeled the same "Kill Team Starter Set" and thats the only title on the box and web listings, yet the contents and prices are radically different. For example " Warhammer 40K : Kill Team Starter Set $136.00" which has Adeptus Astartes and T’au Empire. Is this the elite? Is this the same thing with different troops? ffs GW.... Only difference I can see in the labeling is the image on the front of box is different, everything else identical - except price being nearly doubled..... So how many different army/sets will there be? Why is one $80-90 USD and the other $160....

    • @TheDigitalThreat

      well figured out part of my confusion; the other sets are older/out of print. But I still dont know whats up with the "Recruit Edition" aspect. Will their also be Elite, Command etc versions? Why label the book recruit if its the only new box?

    • @GlassHalfDead
      @GlassHalfDead  2 года назад

      I think that's fair. The starter sets for 40k are quite the range. But for KT, this will be the only actual Starter Set now that the intro box of Octarius is gone. The other boxes are not starter sets as they do not contain the core rules or anything from the essentials kit.
