How do you fly something you can’t even see...
Lots of practice. I know guys who fly these things, and I've seen them in real life.
It's a lot easier to see in person
Some use fpv goggles like in drones
Very very carefully
you just do it
You know why I like this vid? There was no idiot in the back talking for 20 mins, very good vid
Agreed. That is the absolutely dumbest thing they have at RC shows, and full size air shows as well.
'Hey whustup youtoobers I'm gonna talk for 15 minutes about myself and show you how cool/funny I am"
I hate that too. I also hate recipe websites where they tell a G Damn story for 4 pages before they get to the recipe.

I imagine such a thing could be quite useful for missile defense
what you think the darpa has come up with latly...
swarms of very fast drones that target individuals and dive bomb on them and detonate an explosive equivalant to 2 grenades.
DEW and SIGNALS
I really can't believe the military doesn't have versions of this. Seems like they'd be cheap and effective. And now they could be flown with a headset with an HUD and everything.
@@monsterrun a drone swarm would be highly effective.
You could attack areas with heavy air defense and force everyone indoors then release poison gas bombs.
It would be the modern version of horse archers.
I can see why some generals think the future of war will be underground (though I'd just pound the area with bunker busters, rain and chem weapons)
The funny thing is that the last one has no motor.

That's because it is a real jet. Engine I mean.

Cuz it IS a real jet, just...smaller

When you’re looking out the window of a commercial airliner and see an RC airplane passing you....
When there's an RC airplane that close to an airliner... well damn! XDD
*rc plane crashes into plane engine*
😂😂😂
They purposely travel below the speed of sound, they could go a lot over if they wanted. Look at the Concord
It’s a fat felony to be in the airspace without letting them know anyways
The camera guy should be working on a AA gun for the military or something like that, what a legend lol
There gonna break the sound barrier soon
Actually a new plane has developed for braking 1000kmh. Breaking the sound barrier isn't an option it's around 1200kmh at this hight
They're + .*
I hope they do
@@10fantic Yes and height not hight.
I mean if you're not going to pay any attention to spelling why wouldn't you just write 'hite'?
They still have a long way to go to hit Mach 1 or around 767 mph; the fastest speed attained by the last plane was 545 mph.
Imagine some of these hiting your head , damn
That’s what the towel is for.

I don’t get it
Yep, a DS (dynamic soaring) glider is currently the fastest. No motor or onboard propulsion. Sailplanes are the pinnacle of efficient aerodynamic performance. At the speeds they are now achieving, the pilots reaction time is the limiting factor. The pilot simply can not respond fast enough to any error or deviation in flight line if flying much faster. Then there is the latency of control input (movement of transmitter stick) to the airframe's control surface movement to consider. Imagine the loads on the airframe! Truly amazing! I'm surprised more people are not interested in them.
Any autopilots capable of doing that?
How did it get so fast?
Loosely, sort of like a water wheel but up side down... the specially built for the purpose of dynamic soaring sailplane (tight, robust and heavy) flies a loop or oval circuit on the leeward side of the slope or mountain. Every time the plane briefly flies through the faster moving air flowing over the peak it gains some speed or energy. It is able to maintain enough of that energy because the remainder of the circuit/loop is in the eddy flow or relatively less dense air. That's not exactly it but close enough to give you an idea. There may be some other effect at the boundary layer as well. It is certainly plausible we still have more to learn of this phenomenon. Pretty cool! Here is an in depth presentation on Dynamic Soaring and RC sailplanes:

Meanwhile somewhere in the sky in a fighter jet:
Pilot: *looks over*
Rc Jet: *Does wing wag and peels off*
Pilot: *looks at HUD:* _mach 1.2_
Well it wasn’t quite Mach 1.2, 545 mph = Mach 0.716, but yea, a lot faster than the standard speed limit for all planes below 10,000 ft of 250 knots (288 mph). The highest speed airliners will typically cruise at is around Mach 0.85 (647 mph). So you could have probably said hi to a commercial airliner at 35,000 ft assuming you could still go that fast at that altitude.
@@theorangecactus2177 nah I know all that. I mean a literal case of said occurrence.
The sound of those props at that speed/rpm is incredible.👊🤘
I wouldn't have thought to include dynamic soaring in this list, but it seems obvious now that they are the fastest RCs. Faster than any turbine

Number 4 that raw, stuka siren sound plus the wow from the crowd make it feel like has so much energy I love it.
Ironic that number 1 spot is won by a powerless glider, but it was epic as well albeit a bit dizzying.
Came here to say that about the Stuka siren then it transitions into sounding like a F1 car when it’s passing then it climbs like a bat out hell. Might not be the fastest but that like bigger is pretty cool
I just calculated that that last one was maintaining an average upwards pull of approximately *57 Gs.* O.O
Source: Using the speed of 545 mph and timing the video to see how long the plane took to make that revolution, by assuming its path to be a circle we can calculate its centripetal acceleration.
It's around 120g.
The circle is inclined, there's wind shear layer, and half of the approach is slow. When it moves down off the ridge the g is enormous. All carbon fiber, and heavy Glider.
MIT Prof loaned some design software. It's definately no kid's plane! Don't know the cost, can't be cheap!

They fly in a circle on one side of a slope with a specially designed sailplane that's basically a seamless carbon fiber shell such that it catches the wind going one way and has no headwind going the other and it keeps building up speed each pass.
Crazy to think they can just maneuver like this on a dime going this fast and not snap like a twig.
What's the legality of flying these things in the USA? Do you need special permits? What are the logistics?
I believe the main thing that's actually enforced is entering federal, private, or military airspace. That also includes reaching heights of commercial aircraft. Outside of that you should be fine. Just dont crash a plane going +200 mph into someone lol.
200 mph for gas turbines no limit on speed for electric propelled anything and that's not "law" just AMA rules.
Be careful. If one of these takes out an innocent bystander you know the feds and the FAA will be writting all kinds of crazy legislation and we all will suffer. I like low and slow just to mess around so please don't burden me with a bunch of rules because you hurt someone. Even though I dont understand the point of that kind of speed; I'll protect your right to have fast unregulated RC planes if you will protect my right to have unregulated slow RC planes.
For the last one- no requirements in the USA as it is an rc glider.
@@crissd8283 the last pilot was in the desert far away from anyone who was not a DS glider pilot themselves. They accepted the risk of being there. Low and slow is fine when your at a model park. When you drive 2 hours to a remote location to fly your custom made ds glider in 50-80mph headwinds you tend to develop a need for speed.
The baby jet sounds mean! 🔥
I just...how do you even see it? I'd lose it as soon as it went past me 20 yards at that speed. I must have just the worst eye sight. I have 20/20 but there's gotta be something else wrong. lol
Astigmatism. But also your perception of the video on a tiny screen where the camera can't take enough fps to match the tracking if a human eye
@@krotchlickmeugh627 I just can't see the thing. Which I find a bit ironic cause I got pretty good eye coordination. That was until I flew a RC for the first time crashed it. It got 20/20 but I got something that screws me up once the plane is out past 30 yards. It's mind bending to me that anyone can see that thing and fly it at that speed.
@@trustenbaker8766 honestly I learned to fly before I knew I even had an eye condition. The thing that really made me a fantastic flyer and fast learner and still to this day makes me keep flying. Was the easy instinct of orientation by way if stick to plane movement. Within a micro second you can tell which way the plane is even when it's just a blur. Just wag the wings and you'll know. It becomes instinct really quickly. That's how I fly kerosene planes that I build to either be too fast or disintegrate. You kinda fly by the seat of your pants. Losing orientation all the time
@@trustenbaker8766 Half of the skill is muscle memory. Being able to imagine what the craft is doing as your doing it, so that you can almost fly it blindfolded. (just adding a little nugget of insight, im not super knowledgeable on this stuff!)
@@galx3573 Yeah I have tried and I just can’t do it. I fly foamies cause it’s slower, and they can be flown very close to a person. I’m always so surprised to see someone older than me flying one of those lol. Pretty amazing to me.
It's all fun and games till a fkn rc plane can break the sound barrier
Number 7 it looks like the robbe rat or something like that...
Dynamic soaring is such a blast! Seems minor now but back in the day (2007) in little old NZ, we were getting a sustained 166 MPH from a 60" foamy and needed to fly lower than the current crop of carbon ships do. DS flying is usually in very turbulent air and the continuous corrections need to be instinctive (as thinking about it is a way too slow). I lost several models to DS (including a couple of in flight break ups due to flutter at high speed) and thats to do be expected. It was always very satisfying to clock up a decent speed! Amazing to see guys hitting over 500 MPH now!
Wait the fastest doesn’t even have an engine holy Jesus
What is it then? Like a tether plane?
@@b4tty no , it’s called echo glider dynamic soaring
Dynamic soaring RC planes go extremely fast, to the point where they will literally disintegrate from the speed. My dad used to be really into this stuff awhile back
And this is why there will be more and more regulations in the future.
Yep, one crash into an innocent bystander and the feds will be all over it. People love using the government to control other people they don't know or understand. I really dont understand why you would want an RC that goes that fast but do it safely so the rest of us don't suffer the regulation.
Nah. Such planes are being, and have always been, flown by experienced pilots in suitable and safe locations. The reason for more and more regulation comes mainly due to the proliferation of cheap quadcopters for the masses and them being flown near crowded areas and airports.
There's regulation and there's self regulation. When people are thoughtful and smart and deliberately pursue a high speed activity with sensible precautions for a reasonably safe environment, it isn't likely to be a direct government regulatory concern. This changes when the pursuit becomes widespread enough to where people who are too foolish to take precautions or just don't care participate and get hurt or hurt someone else or damage property. The worst case scenario here is loss of control resulting in someone being hit - obviously deadly, but assessing the risks is up to the people there - the threat to someone "off site" is practically nothing as they seem to be out in the country, away from any well populated area.
There’s a comment on this page talking about how someone was crashed into and their body was torn in half (in front of their daughter.) I think these should be legal and everything but past a certain speed I think there should be lots of training and regulations on where you can fly them. Idk if there already is but these are just as dangerous as a car so regulation makes sense
@@CitizenSnips69 nah… they should be able to fly at any speed
Before jets, the speed record for RC was held by a glider. The folks trying to break the record discovered that the engine was slowing the plane down & so left it off!

Okay, someone has to break the sound barrier with an RC airplane - sonic boom and all!
meh if the planes go under 150mph. I sneeze faster than that lol
The trouble with being an 80s baby is that I grew up before smart phones and go cams. I flew a jet 257mph in the 90s.
that number 1, jesus those g's must be intense, props to the design
"How can we make this thing go faster?" "I know, let's take out the motor!"
Never knew a toy plane could almost break the sound barrier
Not my cup of tea, but still thanks a lot for doing it. It lends pride to our hobby.
That's crazy, I remember and still have the COX powered planes and cars from the late 70s and early 80s. Still have a P-51 plane and a Vega funny car and a home built rail dragster. I raced a CR - 125 Honda dirt bike and beat it with the funny car. Cool stuff. 👍👍
I know a man, Bob Stormer, who made a business out of RC racing. He said these planes are the most stress he's ever had having fun. The biggest risk is them flying out of range of the controller. If you lose control, you really lose control.
1:12 the noise is insane
I just wonder we will every have a stationary camera to see a jombo passing by at 600+mph? That will be amazing.
The last one is stuck in subsonic, approaching transonic. Imagine if there was no transonic barrier thou.
piloting this is far more amazing then the speed itself holy shit It’s more insane as you see how fast a 500 mph one went by and I just multiply that times four and the size of an SR 71 jet going by 2200 mph fucking insane man

I was hoping you'd include the gliders, nice video.
Just watched empty road and sky for 2 minutes
3 words you never wanna wanna hear when flying one of these "Where is it?" lol
To all those wondering how the pilot is even able to fly without crashing. I fly RC planes similar to these. It took me MANY crashes and much perseverance but, after a while it becomes second nature. Fortunatly, there is a way to learn to fly without even buying a plane. RC simulators for a PC are extremely realistic. Realflight RC flight sim is probably the best IMO. Theres even simulators for smartphones.. Picasim is a particulary good one available in both app stores. Both simulators model areodynamic physics so well its practicaly the same as real life. Sims wont teach how to build, setup and repair planes, thats a whole other half of the hobby but still, a simulator take a huge part of the learning curve away without another experienced RC pilot there to help. Crashes will still happen but hopefully not on the first flights which was my case. I almost gave up but fortunatly met someone who helped me. If I would have had a simulator Im convined I would have been sucessful on my first flight going solo.
*plane aproaching* * flies by making 45 cal machine gun sounds* = realistic bad ass sound lol
1:12 the most crazy thing is many of these planes are built as gliders.
flying pixels over 200mph is god like

👏👏👏 Thnx for video links in the description, and thanks for not talking over the videos, for that I 👍 and Subscribed.
I don't want to give the bad guys any ideas, but seriously, what is stopping some bad guy from buying one of these, loading it with stuff that likes to explode, and from 5 miles away crash it into some politician? Don't know how something like that could be stopped. Insane.
That's why governments love them, also that's what will probably pay my next contract... You'd probably love my last design, goes faster than some on this list, evades radar detection, carries a couple 40mm payloads... You can do all that yourself, its not exactly rocket science to make an RC plane or full size car, or buy a real plane (I can get real airplane for about $10k, add some servos and GPS and now you don't even need the little toy). Cain killed Abel with a rock, God didn't ban rocks, he allowed everyone to have a rock, and some rocks were used for good (David for example), everyone should have access to rocks because as you see, bad people and governments (some people would debate if its ... AND ...) have access to them and have for many years, you aren't the first nor the last person to think of that, and weaponized UAVs will be the future of war.
If you're ever afraid, just remember, the US gave the Taliban over 400,000 machineguns as well as some drones, I mean nothing could possibly go wrong...
What blows my mind is that actual jets, which are tens or even hundreds of thousands of times heavier, will go *triple* these speeds..
I don’t wanna say this but imagine crashing one of these things.
The G loadings on that turn at 1:31 have to be insane.
Imagine getting hit by an RC going 400+ mph. :O
