Just brilliant little film. The whole think is mindblowing and I will for sure look at the lecture video tonight. Being a full-scale soaring pilot I still cannot grasp whats going on.
For those that haven't watched one of those lectures/presentations it's easy. Think of the wind as a tennis racket and the glider as a ball, where the wind energy from flow or velocity/inertial energy from the racket reverses the direction and increases the speed of the ball. Not directly equivalent at all, but OK for an analogy, which always falls short at some point, because it IS an analogy and not an explanation. Hopefully this one gets the point across. In 'simple stupid' fully layman mode (not implying the layman is stupid, just ignorant of the subject at hand to some extent, like the 'Whatever topic currently applies' for Idiots' books) the energy of the wind above the peak is what is driving the glider to very high ground speeds. Essentially the leeward side wind speed is relatively stationary to the high headwinds above the peak with respect to the ground. The high kinetic energy wind above the mountain top generates much higher airspeed (the current glider speed before exposure plus the headwind speed upon entry into the flowing air), and lower ground speed by a bit. Another wind speed equivalent boost occurs on the in wind turnaround, relative to the ground or stagnant airspeed on the leeward shaded side, meaning the entry back into the low energy non flowing air, another wind speed equivalent boost is imparted. On the turnaround you gain twice the ground speed at each exposure. The max speed boost is based on the ground speed boost on each pass (2X wind speed) minus the drag incurred on the wind exposed top (highest ASL, meaning altitude above sea level) turnaround. The next wind entry airspeed is the entry speed back into stagnant air (ground speed if zero wind) of the previous pass at that point minus the speed lost in the loop in the shaded wind area. At 'steady state' max airspeed, which is built up over multiple passes, meaning the speed at the point measured when max average speed has been obtained, this equalizes, more or less, and further speed cannot be accomplished. This is all talking ideal constant conditions here. In the real world all of that is variable, obviously, meaning wind speed, loop loss based on g pulled (amount of extra high speed stall induced drag incurred throughout the entire loop, etc.). Also the air transition speed at the mountain is not time or distance instantaneous, the leeward side wind speed is not zero, the wind speed at the peak is not constant, etc. In reality an analysis would require a finite element run at each small chosen interval of the passes. This effect also happens with turbine blades or the blades in a automotive torque converter. That is why you can generate much more torque at the rear wheels on launch with an automatic that is available at the output shaft of the engine. It's not something for nothing, never is, and torque can be gained in this case from a Newtonian law standpoint because the relative motion of the input to output shaft is reduced (RPM). There it is a liquid fluid, rather than a gas fluid (air), but the increased boost (torque in this case) comes from diverting the transmission fluid into the blade then back out again. That is all extremely simplified, but hopefully imparts the general idea. This will work with a full sized glider as well, though I'm quite sure it is a bit sporty bring me my brow pants kind of flight regime (severely dangerous) as low AG altitudes are required over almost all of the horizontal loop which is really what this is, since the downward Earth imposed g is pretty much negligible. The other difference is that you cannot remotely tolerate the centripetal g forces being generated here, something like 50 to 100 g, nor can your sailplane, not remotely. See, easy peasy, at least if you have had some physics, and remember it. If not it is still graspable, but not quite as peasy. Cheers. :-)
I've just watched a vlog where an engineer working on inter-stellar travel said that research is being directly influenced by these hobbyists. There is a theory that they might be able to use shear zones in the solar winds to achieve similar fuel-free acceleration for an inter-stellar probe, getting closer to light speed than would otherwise be possible. This might enable a probe to reach other star systems within a single human lifespan.
Points for effort on the filming, but the limitations of streaming video and video compression are well known. Please god, just put the camera on a tripod and leave it. That way, the only thing moving is the airplane. That will allow the codec to allow not worry about the entire scene changing rapidly. No need to zoom in, no need to follow the plane through the circle. Just set it and forget it. If some of the circles are wider than the frame, that's ok. Now get out there and do it again :) Btw, I used to DS back when the speed record was around 202mph. I got to 168mph witha Wizard DS and though my head was going to explode. Spencer is not human.

I really thought my brain was going to catch fire. How on earth they are able to keep control at these new speeds really blows my mind. Talk about no room for error.
Its programmed into his radio for differential flaps & several other things. + 20 years of doing it might have something to do with it. He is getting old enough, I'll bet this is near his peak, reflexes slowing down. @@coma13794
i love this! Ya babbittdaWabbitt sail plane be like f the sound barrier! Turbine does look and sound cool af i admit however these sail planes on full tilt shake the earth. Over the leading edge speeds are over mach so the rumble is like a micro wind break. next time I will bring some proper equipment. @@HolaACchillin The more it goes to the mach 1, sail plane will hit the limit since transonic area is very nasty. Because of area rule, it will have extremely high drag and be unstable.

RC turbined aircraft are arbitrarily speed limited. Just FYI... It takes a lot of dedication and $$$ to go faster so it makes sense DS without multi thousand $$$ turbines is the fastest currently. The ol' line of sight buggaboo bites turbine boys as well.
DS is one of the craziest subsection of the rc glider community. It's crazy how a non-motorized plane can reach those speeds... And the sound! Pretty sweet 👨🎤
you can totally feel the rumble like in your chest as these DS Gliders get moving! I`ve seen quite a bit of slope soaring, but this run is something else man, I`ve seen models doing less than half that speed just EXPLODE mid-air due to the force on the wing, and I mean EXPLODE! As in seize to exist.. When you see what these models are capable of, then you can start top understand why they`re as expensive as they are, it`s really high-end engineering as far as model airplanes go. Not sure how many times I`ve watched this clip, but I`m gonna watch it again, and show it to my friends, because it`s absolutely ridiculous to see something with no engine go transonic :o
Just did some math. The record plane at 9.0kg (according to stats page) and 245m/s has a kinetic energy of 270 kilojoules. A .50bmg round has a kinetic energy of 17 to 20 kilojoules. Getting hit with one of these would be not much fun at all.
@@lililililililili8667 A .50 round has a much smaller cross section, which gives you an impact force over a smaller area => high pressure. Both kinetic energy and pressure matters, but I agree getting hit by one of these planes would not be fun. Probably lethal but probably not pink mist territory.
Yea, I fly Rc gliders, planes, helicopters. And I fly paragliders and I’m definitely in the loop with a lot of these groups. I saw this guys video a few days ago about breaking the previous record which I believe was about 527 and was holding for a really long time considering how fast these gliders and technology are improving. They are incredibly fast and there’s no way I could fly one, so the guys that do have seriously super human reflexes!! Cool shit man

Now youtube is saying they want more first time #holaacchillin videos like this... crazy times rn... The reason I really like comments like this and others, it allows me to see yalls perspective as seasoned pilots. it looks like the only thing that prevents the glider from speeding up even more is it's drag also the shear speed of it sorta reminds me . of those weird blury floating dots . that some think are ufo's

It's is called dynamic soaring. Uses wind gradient. Different wind speeds at different altitudes. You accumulate energy on each cicle. Albatross es use similar principle to fly great distances over see effortlessly.
Interesting this was at Parker . Weldon has had the recent records the last so many years , all in California! They've achieved 500+ in NZ this last year.
The speed of sound varies according to the the materials ability to transmit it. In this cas case the barometric pressure and temperature are a part of the equation.
As I understand it these rc planes are close to transonic speeds. I would think not as there are supersonic aircraft that only have tapered wings with no sweep. One thing that will have to change is getting away from stab and elevator and going to stabilator to maintain pitch control when they get more into the transonic region.

Myself, I was kinda told which soarer to purchase. I plan on updating with a video transmitter and flight controller. Now i will not be flying anywhere near those speeds but it will be great fun fpv. I love the fact these are like 10 pounds in weight! I would love to fly one 99mph first person view. i would imagine there is some challenges but consider the top leading edge of the wing is going over mach 1 already. Include what i saw in speeds on that mountain believe todays tech might have on major leap soon in speed without change. idk, maybe not. good debate and i appreciate the questions/comments.
@@HolaACchillin it all has to do with compressibility at high transonic speeds the shockwave from the front of the horizontal stabilizer makes elevators ineffective look up the X-1 they have great blurb about this and Yeager used the horizontal trim to fly the X-1 too maintain control. Another plane that suffered many accidents due to compressibility was the P-38 when it entered a high speed dive the elevator became ineffective.

@@coma13794 we are literally new to any of this RC stuff. Until the day of the film I had never even heard the words Slope soaring or dynamic soaring. So like we have no clue tbh. It’s up to the OGs like you to help educate us. That’s why I did this video. Everyone on the mountain that day was so helpful and they understood I was out of my element. I honestly was scared to death for like 4 hours straight. I appreciate the comments, just know we know nothing about this particular field.

The first time I saw it being done, the speeds were around 130-150 and my eyes were not doing a good job of keeping up with the airplane...not because it's hard to track an object going that fast, but simply because I was not used to seeing an RC glider move at that speed, so my brain kept expecting it to go slower. I put my story in the description but to recap I saw a stream with these fellas flying fast. I dropped everything compelled to see this with my own eyes. Yes! I was completely staggered at the speed. I kept following the sound in the video but the plane was so far ahead of my ears. Out of breath because my crown Victoria could not make the steep mountain climb I met Spencer. I had no clue what was about to happen. Spencer asked me where I came from and I said 2.5 hour drive and I just climbed this mountain to see these birds fly! Your story is really great too. I think I failed to explain my knowledge of what was going on as I was completely overwhelmed with excitement. I do appreciate all the comments and I think the video is the only one of its kind. Incredible to see these speeds. Actually Turkey Vultures and other bird have been dynamic soaring for eons. I've even seen them dynamic soaring the lee side of a row of tall trees. I wish I had he skill and nerves to try this!

I just stumbled upon this whole genre of flying, so forgive me a beginner's question: Doesn't the trans sonic range begin at Mach 0.8, i.e. around 960 kph? Were you at a an altitude were the speed of sound is sufficiently reduced to have 740 kph at or above Mach 0.8?
Check the link in the description that goes to Spencer's talk on DS. It gets a bit technical but the idea is how the speed of the air is hitting the leading edge of the wing and then forced back down on the top of the wing is a tremendous amount of force. I don't think they're technically "transonic" but are "in the transonic range." Spenser did just put out some videos of a new swept wing prototype which has the goal of going into the transonic range (and hopefully beyond).

I’ll give you that, ya I never planned on filming that day because they were live streaming it early on. 2.5 hours later I show up out of breath because my car wouldn’t make it up the mountain 😂 lol, Idk maybe I was nervous the whole time. I used an iPhone 11 Pro Max to record. Not the best equipment I know but that’s all I had with me. Next time I will bring some proper equipment to record. @@HolaACchillin have you flown Rc before? If not I would not start expecting to dynamic soar in 50 mph winds, get a slope glider that is tough and fly the windward side, but if you practice there then get a faster carbon bird and hopefully not crash it
Is this essentially what albatross do? They kind of turn up into the wind, then dive bomb at the ocean to pick up speed without a lot of flapping as I'm given to understand by a former ornithology professor. I've never see an albatross irl, alas.
What happens, if the plane gets out of control or stalls and only a fraction of it hits a spectator? I thought, People normall hide behind rocks for that kind of measurement. That is a projectile, no plane anymore.

There is a 1 hour seminar hosted by the person who is in this video breaking the record - link link to Spencer Lisenby youtube channel. He manufactures and holds the speed record with these planes. I personally have almost zero knowledge so i do apologize. I flew my first plane two weeks ago and will be posting footage of my progress as I attempt Dynamic soaring in the near future. In his talk he says that in some of their testing they measured 120 G’s, but that the sensor they were using can’t measure over 120 G’s so it was most likely some amount over 120 G’s (but normally more around 40-60 G’s).
@@babybirdhome I think I say somewhere they calculated the G's from the speed and the lap time (giving you the turning radius), that is probably a reasonable way. But I can't remember the number.
turning at 500mph is, in itself, not amazing. Airliners do this all the time. What IS amazing is completing a fully 360 degree turn inside of a couple of seconds. What's INSANE is that the turn isn't continuous, which means that the bulk of load is happening in short windows WITHIN that 2-3 sec turn, which makes the g-loading even higher than if it had been a continuous turn. One way to think of it is this...you're doing 540mph heading one way. Now you need to accelerate such that you're doing 540mph the other way (180 deg turn), now you do ANOTHER 180 turn to return to your original trajectory. That's basically like going from 0 - 2160mph inside of 2-3 seconds, except it's not all happening smoothly. It's....ridiculous. :)
@@coma13794 That is not the correct way to see it. Look at it, it is an almost perfect circle with corrections. So in the first approximation you can see it as a continuous circle with constant speed, giving these 50g (and is compensating the centrifugal force the tight circle causes). What DOES come in addition is the difference in windspeed of the surrounding air. When the plane flies into the windshear, here the windspeed changes by 80 mph. But compared to the 540 mph that is "just" 15%. But as this is a sudden "impact", that needs overproportional strengthening. Your error is that you look at it from the outside. But the forces appear in the plane "swimming" in the air. (Please do not feel offended) Flat earthers do the same error, looking from e.g. the sun at a point on the surface of the earth, saying that due to the rotation of the earth the point has to accelerate and decelerate constantly during the day (seen from the sun. But we know the overhelming force is gravity towards the center of the earth, only slightly lessened by centrifugal force due to the rotation, of max. 0.3% of gravity (300 times more). Feel free to ask, I am sure that was not easily understandable. Let's make science, you try to disprove my claims, and I try to defend them - or fail.
I know a camera would totally foul the aerodynamics, but I want to see FPV footage from these gliders. Mayhe a transparent nose with a camera inside, like a missile?
That would be awesome! I think there is a problem with the g-forces and electronics rn. I do believe they have tried everything but nothing will hold up the the immense g-forces. i am not 100% on that but yes, i would be cool to add a virtual tracer on the plane!
Seems like the best cameraman is the pilot with gopro on head. I've seen most of the record videos on RUclips, this one is descent. In general, it's difficult to video something traveling over 500mph.
in person I can tell you i was Terrified. I dug in the side of the mountain and proceeded to enjoy my afternoon. Filming these rc dynamic gliders was a bit of a challenge with the wind. I would love to get some serious audio equipment next go around! I spoke with Spencer and he said he has been chasing his older 545 mph record for 2 whole years. Breaking this current 548 mph speed record is 100% possible. with three high end radar detectors i personally saw all read same speeds all day. Dsing is fast af and scary af and beautiful af! bucket list if possible. As of today i believe the only person that will go way faster and smash the current record is Spencer Lisenby himself. much love ANTH davis - AC
@@HolaACchillin On one DS video there was some strange corner protruding into the picture. Took me a while to understand that this was a solid wooden wall they were standing behind. The idea of a 300 mph crashing into someone - urgh. But a glider has a pretty pointed nose, filled with lead, and 2-5 kgs behind it. I heard that a .5 cal machine gun bullets goes through walls. The plane is way slower, but the bullet weighs just a few grams...

I really thought my brain was going to catch fire. How on earth they are able to keep control at these new speeds really blows my mind. Talk about no room for error.
Its programmed into his radio for differential flaps & several other things. + 20 years of doing it might have something to do with it. He is getting old enough, I'll bet this is near his peak, reflexes slowing down. @@coma13794

i love this! Ya babbittdaWabbitt sail plane be like f the sound barrier! Turbine does look and sound cool af i admit however these sail planes on full tilt shake the earth. Over the leading edge speeds are over mach so the rumble is like a micro wind break.
next time I will bring some proper equipment. This particular day i was so unprepared my car would not even make it up the steep mountain road.

RC turbined aircraft are arbitrarily speed limited. Just FYI... It takes a lot of dedication and $$$ to go faster so it makes sense DS without multi thousand $$$ turbines is the fastest currently. The ol' line of sight buggaboo bites turbine boys as well.
DS is one of the craziest subsection of the rc glider community. It's crazy how a non-motorized plane can reach those speeds... And the sound! Pretty sweet 👨🎤
you can totally feel the rumble like in your chest as these DS Gliders get moving! An experience I would like to revisit in the near future. ummm, I do not know if you read the description but i saw a live stream on yt then drove over 2 hours to watch these RC planes in person. 100% unplanned series of events led me to this mountain.

I`ve seen quite a bit of slope soaring, but this run is something else man, I`ve seen models doing less than half that speed just EXPLODE mid-air due to the force on the wing, and I mean EXPLODE! As in seize to exist..
When you see what these models are capable of, then you can start top understand why they`re as expensive as they are, it`s really high-end engineering as far as model airplanes go.
Not sure how many times I`ve watched this clip, but I`m gonna watch it again, and show it to my friends, because it`s absolutely ridiculous to see something with no engine go transonic :o
Just did some math. The record plane at 9.0kg (according to stats page) and 245m/s has a kinetic energy of 270 kilojoules. A .50bmg round has a kinetic energy of 17 to 20 kilojoules. Getting hit with one of these would be not much fun at all.

@@lililililililili8667 A .50 round has a much smaller cross section, which gives you an impact force over a smaller area => high pressure. Both kinetic energy and pressure matters, but I agree getting hit by one of these planes would not be fun. Probably lethal but probably not pink mist territory.

Yea, I fly Rc gliders, planes, helicopters. And I fly paragliders and I’m definitely in the loop with a lot of these groups. I saw this guys video a few days ago about breaking the previous record which I believe was about 527 and was holding for a really long time considering how fast these gliders and technology are improving. They are incredibly fast and there’s no way I could fly one, so the guys that do have seriously super human reflexes!! Cool shit man

Uses wind gradient. Different wind speeds at different altitudes.
You accumulate energy on each cicle.
Albatross es use similar principle to fly great distances over see effortlessly.

The speed of sound varies according to the the materials ability to transmit it. In this cas case the barometric pressure and temperature are a part of the equation.

I would think not as there are supersonic aircraft that only have tapered wings with no sweep. One thing that will have to change is getting away from stab and elevator and going to stabilator to maintain pitch control when they get more into the transonic region.

Myself, I was kinda told which soarer to purchase. I plan on updating with a video transmitter and flight controller. Now i will not be flying anywhere near those speeds but it will be great fun fpv. I love the fact these are like 10 pounds in weight! I would love to fly one 99mph first person view.
i would imagine there is some challenges but consider the top leading edge of the wing is going over mach 1 already. Include what i saw in speeds on that mountain believe todays tech might have on major leap soon in speed without change.

@@HolaACchillin it all has to do with compressibility at high transonic speeds the shockwave from the front of the horizontal stabilizer makes elevators ineffective look up the X-1 they have great blurb about this and Yeager used the horizontal trim to fly the X-1 too maintain control. Another plane that suffered many accidents due to compressibility was the P-38 when it entered a high speed dive the elevator became ineffective.

@@coma13794 we are literally new to any of this RC stuff. Until the day of the film I had never even heard the words Slope soaring or dynamic soaring. So like we have no clue tbh. It’s up to the OGs like you to help educate us.
That’s why I did this video. Everyone on the mountain that day was so helpful and they understood I was out of my element. I honestly was scared to death for like 4 hours straight.

The first time I saw it being done, the speeds were around 130-150 and my eyes were not doing a good job of keeping up with the airplane...not because it's hard to track an object going that fast, but simply because I was not used to seeing an RC glider move at that speed, so my brain kept expecting it to go slower. Thanks again for posting!
I put my story in the description but to recap I saw a stream with these fellas flying fast. I dropped everything compelled to see this with my own eyes. Yes! I was completely staggered at the speed. I kept following the sound in the video but the plane was so far ahead of my ears. Out of breath because my crown Victoria could not make the steep mountain climb I met Spencer. I had no clue what was about to happen. Spencer asked me where I came from and I said 2.5 hour drive and I just climbed this mountain to see these birds fly!
Your story is really great too. I think I failed to explain my knowledge of what was going on as I was completely overwhelmed with excitement. I do appreciate all the comments and I think the video is the only one of its kind. If I get another chance I will bring equipment with me and DEFINITELY get a steady shot!

Incredible to see these speeds. Actually Turkey Vultures and other bird have been dynamic soaring for eons. I've even seen them dynamic soaring the lee side of a row of tall trees. I wish I had he skill and nerves to try this!

Did you ever end up putting a g meter in the wing? Im curious what kind of pull, im ultra impressed the wings of the aircraft dont clap like hands.
They did and the meter averaged 60-80g and has also maxed out at 120g

I just stumbled upon this whole genre of flying, so forgive me a beginner's question: Doesn't the trans sonic range begin at Mach 0.8, i.e. around 960 kph? Were you at a an altitude were the speed of sound is sufficiently reduced to have 740 kph at or above Mach 0.8?
Check the link in the description that goes to Spencer's talk on DS. It gets a bit technical but the idea is how the speed of the air is hitting the leading edge of the wing and then forced back down on the top of the wing is a tremendous amount of force. I don't think they're technically "transonic" but are "in the transonic range." Spenser did just put out some videos of a new swept wing prototype which has the goal of going into the transonic range (and hopefully beyond).

@@HolaACchillin have you flown Rc before? If not I would not start expecting to dynamic soar in 50 mph winds, get a slope glider that is tough and fly the windward side, but if you practice there then get a faster carbon bird and hopefully not crash it
there's lots of on board footage out there. It's interesting for about 5 seconds, then quickly becomes unwatchable.

Is this essentially what albatross do? They kind of turn up into the wind, then dive bomb at the ocean to pick up speed without a lot of flapping as I'm given to understand by a former ornithology professor. I've never see an albatross irl, alas.

In his talk he says that in some of their testing they measured 120 G’s, but that the sensor they were using can’t measure over 120 G’s so it was most likely some amount over 120 G’s (but normally more around 40-60 G’s).
@@babybirdhome I think I say somewhere they calculated the G's from the speed and the lap time (giving you the turning radius), that is probably a reasonable way. But I can't remember the number.
turning at 500mph is, in itself, not amazing. Airliners do this all the time. What IS amazing is completing a fully 360 degree turn inside of a couple of seconds. What's INSANE is that the turn isn't continuous, which means that the bulk of load is happening in short windows WITHIN that 2-3 sec turn, which makes the g-loading even higher than if it had been a continuous turn. One way to think of it is this...you're doing 540mph heading one way. Now you need to accelerate such that you're doing 540mph the other way (180 deg turn), now you do ANOTHER 180 turn to return to your original trajectory. That's basically like going from 0 - 2160mph inside of 2-3 seconds, except it's not all happening smoothly. It's....ridiculous. :)
@@coma13794 That is not the correct way to see it. Look at it, it is an almost perfect circle with corrections.
So in the first approximation you can see it as a continuous circle with constant speed, giving these 50g (and is compensating the centrifugal force the tight circle causes).
What DOES come in addition is the difference in windspeed of the surrounding air. When the plane flies into the windshear, here the windspeed changes by 80 mph. But compared to the 540 mph that is "just" 15%. But as this is a sudden "impact", that needs overproportional strengthening.
Your error is that you look at it from the outside. But the forces appear in the plane "swimming" in the air.
(Please do not feel offended)
Flat earthers do the same error, looking from e.g. the sun at a point on the surface of the earth, saying that due to the rotation of the earth the point has to accelerate and decelerate constantly during the day (seen from the sun.
But we know the overhelming force is gravity towards the center of the earth, only slightly lessened by centrifugal force due to the rotation, of max. 0.3% of gravity (300 times more).
Feel free to ask, I am sure that was not easily understandable.

Seems like the best cameraman is the pilot with gopro on head. I've seen most of the record videos on RUclips, this one is descent. In general, it's difficult to video something traveling over 500mph.

in person I can tell you i was Terrified. I dug in the side of the mountain and proceeded to enjoy my afternoon. Filming these rc dynamic gliders was a bit of a challenge with the wind. I would love to get some serious audio equipment next go around!
I spoke with Spencer and he said he has been chasing his older 545 mph record for 2 whole years. Breaking this current 548 mph speed record is 100% possible. with three high end radar detectors i personally saw all read same speeds all day.
Dsing is fast af and scary af and beautiful af! bucket list if possible.
As of today i believe the only person that will go way faster and smash the current record is Spencer Lisenby himself.

@@HolaACchillin On one DS video there was some strange corner protruding into the picture. Took me a while to understand that this was a solid wooden wall they were standing behind. The idea of a 300 mph crashing into someone - urgh.
But a glider has a pretty pointed nose, filled with lead, and 2-5 kgs behind it. I heard that a .5 cal machine gun bullets goes through walls. The plane is way slower, but the bullet weighs just a few grams...
