If I had been born 200 years ago Well I would've been a sailor A-sailing I would go I'd sail around the capes and across the seven seas And then back home If I had been born 200 years ago And I would know the waters And the waters would know me And I would cut across the waves And be as happy as can be I'd be landless, I'd be loveless I'd be flight and fancy free And I would know the waters And the waters would know me When I think about the time And place where I was born Oh, I wonder if the hands of fate Had slipped and placed me wrong Because there are ships I could have sailed And sailor's boots I could have worn When I think about the time And place where I was born The ocean is still out there Magnificent and wide She's got open arms to hold me And endless space to hide And the only things that hold me back Are the things I hold inside The ocean is still out there Magnificent and wide Oh, oh, oh A-sailing I should go
I love Frank. I've been listening to him for years, have all of his studio albums and have signed compilations, have been to all of his tours since I started listening, supported his independent venue love live streams, have been to Lost Evenings both in the UK and abroad. After everything, this is still my favourite song.
On Bamburgh beach in Northumberland, same as the video for "If Ever I Stray" - 1:42 gives a nice close-up of Bamburgh castle. Beautiful scenery, I agree!
My son is named Llyr, for the Welsh god of the Ocean. I sing this song to him regularly. He's 15 months, and today is the first day I showed him the video of you singing it. His eyes lit up and he tried to sing along. He likes this video more than when I sing it now. lol
That's an intresting name for a kid.My Nephew is named after Saint Michael,my Brother is named after The guy that invented the Decimal System, and i'm named after an English Noble from the 17-1800's...
How this guy hasn't charted higher than number 40 , I don't know. Millions are missing out on his genius. The world would be a greater place if everyone listened to Frank. FACT!!
Amazing at Reading, Frank - you made my entire day! :D (I essentially was there to see you, and you didn't disappoint :D) Especially at the Lock-Up - was sooo so good ^-^ x
I thank Orla for leading me here, being former US Navy I utterly love this song. It speaks to every part of me. Thank you for making this great song and sharing it.
@MrRubberjonny91 I have all the albums. I fell in love with his stuff quite a while ago but I mean proper folk. For example when I went to see him in Portsmouth in 2009 he sang a song which I can't remember the proper name of but my sister and I refere to it as 'Briar Rose'. That was just breath taking and spine-tinglingly beautiful and also English Curse from his most recent album.
@AliceItoko I heard that when Frank wrote this, the melody sounded similar to songs that Rod Stewart would write. He didn't originally have a title for this song, so he just named it Rod Stewart
Just came from Wilbur Soot. Fantastic song!
same !
Me too!
Same! Now my new favourite song!
same! i had to google the lyrics to know the title. lol
Same
i came from wilbur soot's stream.
Amazing song:)
If I had been born
Well I would've been a sailor
A-sailing I would go
I'd sail around the capes and across the seven seas
And then back home
If I had been born
And I would know the waters
And the waters would know me
And I would cut across the waves
And be as happy as can be
I'd be landless, I'd be loveless
I'd be flight and fancy free
And I would know the waters
And the waters would know me
When I think about the time
And place where I was born
Oh, I wonder if the hands of fate
Had slipped and placed me wrong
Because there are ships I could have sailed
And sailor's boots I could have worn
When I think about the time
And place where I was born
The ocean is still out there
Magnificent and wide
She's got open arms to hold me
And endless space to hide
And the only things that hold me back
Are the things I hold inside
The ocean is still out there
Magnificent and wide
Oh, oh, oh
A-sailing I should go
I know the entire thing off by heart and am 99% sure you nailed it
Thank u haha
Those whose soul is unexplainably attached to the sea feel you more than ever. And we thank you for this.
He played this in Dublin, me and a mate sang it. Were the only ones in the whole venue singing along, great vibe!
all music tells stories, some just tell them better.
I swear my life would be so different if i hadn't ever found you those years ago Frank
Theres something so personal in finding a song that reminds you of similar thoughts you've had on your own

He has such a good voice he should be in the charts!!!
Funny how things you think to yourself turn up in songs from other peoples minds.
On Bamburgh beach in Northumberland, same as the video for "If Ever I Stray" - 1:42 gives a nice close-up of Bamburgh castle.
Beautiful scenery, I agree!

It's so short and everytime I listen I wish it went on a bit longer but it's also kind of perfect how it is..

How this guy hasn't charted higher than number 40 , I don't know. Millions are missing out on his genius. The world would be a greater place if everyone listened to Frank. FACT!!

@AliceItoko I heard that when Frank wrote this, the melody sounded similar to songs that Rod Stewart would write. He didn't originally have a title for this song, so he just named it Rod Stewart
Frank turner shouldn't have B-Sides, all of his music is equally brilliant.
@EnigmaticDuck I really want the second three years, it's got brilliant songs on it :/ Can't wait for christmas!!! :D
Frank, you play guitar like Johnny cash with the right hand flowing so naturally and easy
Go for The Second Three Years. A load of brilliant B-Sides and covers! It's the first song on there :)
Reminds me of Laura Marling!
@SeanieBlahBlah know exactly what you mean!
Tune
Frank, you never disappoint!! This song is wonderful!
by the way, it is "Sailor's Boot" or Sailor's Boots"?
I fucking love this.
Have you noticed this sailors boots video is in exactly the same pace as if ever I stray and Frank's got the same clothes on lol
They were filmed the same day. He was pulled aside by a blogger who got invited to record this video
