The World’s BIGGEST private Honda CR500 Collection?

- We’re taking a look at my entire Honda CR500/big bore bike collection. The Honda big bore bikes in my collection run from 1981 CR 450 to 1997 CR500. A few of them I race, the remaining I have in my collection that are fully restored. We’ve covered some of these bikes in detail in separate videos on my RUclips channel. Any of the bikes we haven’t yet covered, we will be doing in-depth videos on in the next few weeks.
As a private party collector, I may have one of the largest Honda CR big bore collections....but we had to do a teaser title. I’m sure a few members and certainly museums have me beat on numbers. I have several bikes that are restored to original condition and some are original and have just been detailed/cleaned. Some I have restored and set up to ride and race and others I have restored to my personal liking. For those that do not get ridden and are fully restored I store them with no fuel in the tanks and if I did a full restoration on them I have not put gas in the tank since nor radiator fluid.
For racing, I am a big fan of 1981-1983 class (drum brake only) and 1984 - 1986 (front disc only). I feel these are the most fun and the bikes are closest to a modern feel you can get. They are a big difference from racing in the 1978-1980 class. You can still jump big jumps with these bikes and they take a beating.
Below are videos that cover each bike in great detail and how I obtained them. Next week, we will be going in-depth on one of the cleanest all original 1986 CR 500's I have ever seen. I am excited to see this video myself! Hope to see you at next weekend’s video.

I dont know of a better private collection ❤ this is outstanding and Charlie knows his stuff. Ken Sr
Means a lot coming from you Ken Sr 👊🏼
wow the gloss look of the 81 tank i am a 2 stroke person those 78-the 90s were nice its really nice to see you have been able to keep them in perfect condition
all those bikes have such gloss shine just amazing
Thank you! A lot of work to get the tanks back to life.
I love the triumphant return of big bore 2 strokers…. The mid to later 90’s CR500s were my absolute dream bikes as I was racing 125s at the time. Badass collection!!!!!!!!!!
Agree! It is pretty incredible that the big bore's are in such demand. Love seeing guys riding and racing these bikes and some of the restorations out there are impressive. Any rider should have an 80's two smoke!
Man, what a beautiful, sick, gorgeous collection. I want all of those bikes.
Thank you! Blessed to be able to do what I do.
Cleanest I have ever seen.
Thank you Dennis!
This is Laboratory level clean, good on you for living out our dream.❤
Thank you…great pride in what I do and taking care of what I have earned through blood, sweat and tears. Work hard play hard 👊🏼
Beauty’s dude! You need a 85 and 87 to complete the 85-87 killer tro! I’ve had them all and I still think these bikes are the best 500’s I ever ridden, the riding position on the 87 is very futuristic for 87, and hard to beat the amazing cartridge forks. I’ll be buried with my 87 500 :)
Amazing content you have a lot to be proud of 👌
Thank you Paul and yes agree! I am not as concerned getting the 1985 since it is very similar to the 1986 and the 1986 is the better of the two. The 1987 is a must have though and trying to find an all original.
Finally someone who isn't just a over priced salesman. Selling bikes that are not beat on before sale.
Big Bore 2 strokes- what’s not love . Sadly a bygone era but they still rock !
That Peak 500 is the Shizzle 🦾👽
Definitely one of my favorite's. Did you see the video on the build of that bike? The before image of it in the video is pretty cool. That bike was a lot of work. Definitely one of my favorite builds.
Great to see Bob hooking your builds up with the asv levers.
Thank you!
LOVE the '81 bike. And all the rest are amazing as well. Well done and thanks for the tour!
Thank you Mark! The 1981 I would bet is one of the best restorations out there.
Awesome collection! I been working on rebuilding 1985 Honda cr125 for a while now
I wanted to write a long text but I am really speechless with your channel! Really cooooooooooooooool to keep simple! Thank you for sharing these videos!
Greatly appreciate it and driven to do more with all the positive feedback.
Love drooling over your collection! 😍
Honda recalled my 89 500 forks.
Came back just as bad.
Wish I kept that 500 !!
I'm sure that you've clarified this in other videos that I haven't seen yet, but the '87 and '88 CR500s are virtually mechanically identical, with the only substantial difference being the color of the plastics and the seat. The '88 was the same color as the '89. Also, I believe that the '96 thru 2001 were mechanically identical. Nice collection! I had an '81, and isn't that a non-stock throttle on yours? Whatever you do with that '81, don't bottom out the rear end. Those were known for bending and breaking the shock shafts! Don't ask me how I know!!!
I bought an 89 CR5 new and it's was gorgeous, prob my favorite color combo. I upgraded and bought my 97 CR5 that i still ride. Right out of the box I could tell the suspension was much better than my old 89 with Showa suspension.
Agree big improvement and 1997 went to larger mm forks.
Have ya ever seen anything so beautiful as a dirtbike
Thank you Ian!
Brilliant video And collection...watching from Liverpool UK 🇬🇧
Right on! How is the Liverpool vintage Mx scene there?
Awesome collection, Thanks for sharing, all the bikes I love, you made my day,
Many Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great collection......history lesson of these beasts........thank you
Thank you Robert 👊🏼
Very few people understand what it takes to have collections like this
Thank you! a passion of mine.
@CharlieFerer it's blessing and curse everything has to just right the cable clamps, the fuel lines, the airbox boot clamps, the word passion is close but still doesn't fully explain it... but I'm right there with you
@@tricycleguy2657 love it! Yes agree and all part of the fun restoring them.
I’m coming over and bringing beer and pit tootsies! I used to race the Northern California enduro series and the Shasta dam Grand Prix on a ‘93 CR500. Ported, high compression piston, Showa factory front fork guts and for the time, a really bad ass Öhlins rear shock. I loved that damn thing!
Charlie thanks a whole lot for all your doing man. All the best brother
Thank you Philip!
I love them all! Can’t wait for the 110 build 😝🤘
Very impressive collection, that 450 is beautiful. You rarely see them ever, and how rare is that front plate.👌
Keep up the great videos
Right! One if my favorites to look at.
@@CharlieFerer I sourced some part's for a 450 my friend was restoring some years back. His budget went over 30k to finish the project.
Those bikes are hard to find nos part's for. I watched a few of your videos, very nice collection of beautiful machines.
I will post a video in the future of my collection. Nothing anywhere near your quality collection, my collection is used race bike's from Australia.
Lot's of minibikes, keep the great films coming 👍
@@australiandirtbikeracing2108 I believe it in Australia 👍🏼
Nice collection, I have a 82 CR480 and a 1991 CR500.
Both great bikes! Beast Mode 💪🏼
Amazing collection, the rest of, the OGs and the Peak and last one can’t pick, they are all outstanding, subbed and def follow your upcoming vids, great find this channel. All the best with the channel.. 🤘
Thank you Maverick 👊🏼
Hello from Ireland ☘️ great video. Amazing collection
Thank you! 👊🏼
Love the big bore Honda’s!! Awesome video Charlie! I have an Original 86 CR 500 you’ve seen just like that! 🤘🏻
The 1986 CR 500 is so raw and one of my favorite looking 80’s CR bikes! Definitely a must have for a 1980’s collector.
Wowie that 92 and 97 bikes were amazing great job
Also couldn’t help my self but subscribe just to watch all your builds
Thank you Dan!
Man you've got me hooked... honda 2 strokes are aa good as it gets, especially 500s!
Agree! They are so fun to ride. I can ride these on the track and literally stay in 3rd and 4th gear on a Mx track so super easy to ride. Grunt just pulls you.
@@CharlieFerer Oh ya they have so much bottom end, especially for a 2 stroke. Short shifting is the way.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing what you have. I really like the aluminum tank powder coated white.
Yes the aluminum tanks are awesome! Definitely a great addition and you can keep your original tank boxed up for the future!
Wow.!So impressive of a collection. Great video. Garage of dreams! Subscribed!
Thank you Fraser. Not easy to maintain everything but a lot of fun and has been a fun investment.
If you count 82/83 CR480 I have a lot more than Charlie has, but Charlie has beautifully restored machines, mine are all raced regularly by myself and others
Love it! Glad you share the same passion for these bikes! Two of these bikes in the video I race as well (1983 and 1986).
@@CharlieFerer your 83 480 is a absolutely pristine machine and you sometimes race it, that's a lot of work to keep it looking like that....I show all my buddies your bikes lol
@@douglayman1843 thank you Doug! That bike is a lot of fun to ride. Nothing on the top end but low and mid power is great and you are only usually shifting like a four stroke 450.
@@douglayman1843 thank you Doug!
beautiful collection my friend
Thank you 🙏🏻
Wow amazing collection!
Beautiful collection
Thank you 🙏🏻
The black rims looks the best my opinion
Outstanding!!
Don't let Kaplan America see these BEASTS he's gonna have a heart attack 🇺🇸🤣
Haahaa I hope he does see them so he knows more of us that are restoring and racing these bikes. A lot of fun and a great hobby!
Stunning collection!! ❤
Damn quite the collection!! R u building a gold mine? Haha
i UNDERSTAND You Collect The Big Bore Bikes but How About The Elsinores--??? I had an original 1978 Cr 250 R Elsinore years ago have not seen too many around---Love The Collection You Have--!!!!
Love the Elsinore bikes as well. I recently did a video on my 1980 CR 250 you may like and a 1976 CR 250
I think you need a mint 2001 CR500 to help round off your collection! 👍
I know a guy who has '40' or more CR 500s! The 96 to 2001 are the same bike. The 95 is essentially the same, with the exception of the forks, shock and few other one year only parts! Great bike collection and channel by the way!
40+ just CR 500’s…very impressive! I am sure there are some huge collectors out there. Thank you for commenting and please subscribe for more content coming up!
Huge banshee collection video I just saw and now this after. Now just need a video of a kx500 collection to add even more regret of me selling literally over 7 nice cr500’s,2 kx500’s and multiple banshees (9+).still have a 94 cr500 tho. Woulda coulda shoulda.
Thank you! You can always start collecting again!
Sick collection, key is no wedding ring lol
Haahaa I am sure it helps. Many of my friends that are married have a good amount of bikes. I think the wives see value in it. It keeps their men from going out drinking on the weekends to staying fit to keep their level of fitness needed to race motocross and have a healthy husband. I think that is a big benefit for your spouse compared to a lot of their wives husbands that do not have a serious hobby.
The 87 cr500 was fast I rode a modified one it pulled to the moon suspension was fantastic. 86 cr125 was perfect bike back then fork lil soft but it toasted every 125 of the day. Is this guy in San Diego??
The 1985-1987 CR 125 we’re the shizzle. My first race bike was a 1987 cr 125 when I was 17. Located in Phoenix metro, AZ
@@CharlieFerer right on mane.!
The cr500 90s 😍😍😍
My 1997 is an amazing g riding bike. The suspension work really helped the handing of it. Highly recommend the hydraulic clutch.
I like the 95/96 and 1998
Awesome 🤟
Nice bike's 🔝, I have one 89 red ❤️
Kaplan Cycles would LOVE this!!! He's a CR 500 guy!
Yes, I wonder if he has ever seen any of my videos.
Killing it with the Big Bore content! Your in my favorites always excited for more content! What a collection! I would have an 87 in there! The 83s are sexy and it makes me want one!
I agree, definitely need an 87! Thank you for your support💪🏼
The orange cr's are my favorite. I wish I could do my crf 250l like that, but no one makes the orange plastic for it.
You'll never find a guy in the world collecting rm 500s
Finally not a Kaplan video lol
😂😂 thank you for watching!
@@CharlieFerer love his content but Yk what I mean lolol
@@augieh6146 yes, we are lucky he does what he does to keep the EVO & vintage bikes alive. There are some big collectors out there. Kaplan is a character that is for sure.
While l love any CR450-500 l'd rather see one that has era correct bars, levers and rims on it. That's just me.. I love all of your bikes but seeing them with the stock hardware really gets my juices flowing ! LOL !! 😆
In this video I have two bikes that are all stock…with original bars, grips, rims, even original plastic and decals (1986 & 1989 CR 500). The ones I race and ride I do not use stock bars.
Dang, I only got 2 CRs('88 & '96) but 4 500s.
Id like to get some of those aluminum tanks though.
Yes, the aluminum tanks are pretty cool!
Ix rather run one of those on my '88 than use my new-in-the-box NOS tank..
The peak bike is so cool,Why no 85?
Great question and the answer is for the D! class (front disc only) for vintage racing are years 1984-1986. The 1986 is a better bike than the 1985 and 1984 so I try to stay on just years that are best for racing. For example 1981-1983 the 1983 bikes are a better bike and retain value better. A 1986 is worth more resale value than a 1984 or a 1986. Same with a 1981 or 1982 bike compared to a 1983 bike. You would be better racing a 1983 CR 480 than the 1981 CR 450 as an example. Same with the 250 and big liter bikes.
Love your collection. 88 was the first low center of gravity tank and pipe. 89 went to the upside down forks although RJ was racing them already on in 88. my one question is what is the front brake master cylinder you are running on your track bike? the last one in the video, all white. OEM?
Yes, great information thank you John. On my all white 1997 I am running the Magura master cylinder. Brake feel is a lot better. Also running the Magura clutch which is like butter. Definitely two great upgrades.
@@CharlieFerer thanks Charlie. Would you have a link or part number?
What part of the country do you live? You still see some 500s at the ARHMA races
In Arizona. Yes we have two classes we race in AVDRA and another vintage race series that does 81-83 called GP3 that is non disc brake open and I race a 83 Honda CR 480 and another class that is 84-86 Cale’s D1 which is front brake only class that many race the 500’s in (I race my 1986 CR 500).
Hey Charlie where best to find the OEM paint specs for the Honda CR500 Range up to 1997?
My Powdercoat guy in Phoenix has them. I will see if he has a web site to link to.
How do you decide when and if to preserve them. I mean with that many bikes, what do you do to keep them from deteriorating whilst on display?
Hi Ronald! That is a great question. I try to keep them as original as possible if going to be a collector bike and not ridden. With that said though many of the bikes I buy I try to find as original as possible. Most of the time these bikes need a complete rebuild down to the frame and at that point I would start from the frame up and Powdercoat the frame, rebuild the engine, rebuild suspension, do a nut/bolt refresh. I prefer to do a full motor rebuild now using Ryan at Factory Edge than try to do one years later because it is getting harder to find parts for these bikes. I will be dropping a video in the next couple weeks on how to prep a bike for long term or display. This will answer your question. All of my bikes are in a climate controlled environment which greatly helps keep the current look of the bikes. Worst thing you can do is keep it in the garage or somewhere where it gets extreme heat temperatures during the summer months etc. and that’s what deteriorates the bikes the fastest.
Subbed 🤘🏼
Thank you!🙏🏻
Einfach geile Motorräder...💗👌
Danke
@@CharlieFerer unübertroffen wenn man sie von Profis im vollen Einsatz sieht 🙂
Ken Kaplan should of been able to bet that.
Yes, I agree.
Hi, I have a question. How much do you think a pretty nice and original looking 85 Cr 500 is worth? There is a hole in the bottom of the engine tho but I believe all the gears is working.
I would have to see an image of the bike. The motor having a hole in the case is a problem.
Grenaded engine? $500 max. You'll spend a few thousand or many sleepless nights hunting for new cases, crank, etc needed to get it going again.
You need to really punish a 500 to lose the engine. I shudder to think how the rest of the bike has neen treated.
the more i watch this video the more unsafe my kidneys are
Haahaa
Where and who makes those aluminum tanks?
I just looked and can not find anything in my emails or messages on Facebook. They came from Italy. Company had a listing on one of the CR forums. If I find the information I will let you know.
Wicked collection!
Hey where do you get a pro circuit pipe from for an 87 cr500? I've been looking for a fresh chrome one and I can't find anything for the life of me
Hi Nathan! I have my 1986 CR 500 at Po Circuit right now and the team is building a jig so they can start selling these again. I think they will focus on the "works" look. I have been told the 1986 pipe fits the 1987 bike.
@@CharlieFerer okay thank you!
Where do you get your bikes restored I have a1984 cr500r thanks
I like the No11 bike best😅

You know of any loyal good mechanics? I’m having a problem with my rm250 that won’t stArt and I’m tired of dumping money into it. I’m in San tan valley
Yes, hit up Ryan at Factory Edge. He is solid and trustworthy and does amazing work. 520-250-0949
I’m selling my just completed 1987 cr 500. Has compression release added
are these for sale?
Yes some are for sale. Feel free to private message me on instagram.
How did you get a blue rear fender for the Spitfire build?
How can I get a 1986 cr 250cc
Are you located in the United States?
Can I buy one
Yes, email me at: stark@atacsol.com
No 84 cr500. First 5 only air cooled 5 I have one
No 84 cr500..
Correct. Race class is 1981 - 1983 (drum brake) and 1984 - 1986 (front disc only class) so I prefer the 1986 over the 1984. Just like I prefer the 1983 over the 1981 for racing/collecting. Those are the best out of those race class years.
The 1982 CR480 isn't that far off from the 1983 480
I would greatly disagree. The 1983 is redesigned and a better ergo bike for rider. The 1981 was one of the worst Honda builds and least reliable. The 1982 was a little better. Because of this Honda for 1983 redesigned everything and even the motor is now completely reliable and now has a better transmission with 5 speed. The front brake has a lot better stopping power with a dual leading shoe. They also improved the front forks besides the forks being a larger diameter. Shock has new linkage and more adjustable. Also cool for 1983 is the removable sub frame. The rear brake was redesigned for better pull in as well to the brake shoes.
The 1983 is one of the most reliable air cooled bikes Honda manufactured. In my eyes you can not compare the 1981 and 1982 model even though they look alike. Remember for vintage racing this class is 1981-1983 and you want to be in the 1983.
Someone. Told me the 1983 is lighter than the 1982 but when I ride both they both feel heavy lol.
Can i interest You in a cr 500 with atachment ? Îs for 2 people Race , was used in a hungariuan 3 wheel champion Ship and îs running , i think You will like IT , whrite me in private please , its an old versiuon Air cooled i believe
