It’s worth it for networking with people with a high net worth. If you get the high end membership, you get access to all NYC spots, and locations worldwide, which is great if you travel. Before you sign up, double check the class schedule. Not all the clubs have all classes. I know that not every NYC location has hot yoga, and that’s really important for me personally. Make sure there’s a location within walking distance from your place of residence or employment, because if you gotta get a car/subway every day, you’ll probably be less likely to utilize the gym.
Do you live in NYC or have tried Equinox? Most classes have heated yoga. It's not bikram/hot yoga though. There are a ton of classes throughout the day and you are not limited on how many you can go to or which ones unless you have a single pass which I don't think they really offer anymore.
Hi Joy. A great introduction to Equinox. My particular issue with joining a gym is that is quite easy to get in, but not so much getting out. I want to be able to join the gym, and not be a hustle to stay. I see those old contracts where it states that you can only be taken out of the contract if you became sick (doctors note), move far away without the reach of a facility, or death. Furthermore, I always wanted the option to just join for six months to a year without commitment, without paying extravagant fees just to get out.
Hey you can opt out if you move or have a health reason with a doctors note. Most of the initiation fees are waived by a corporate benefit or being a former member
Thank you so much for this comment! I was not aware of that. I'm looking into gyms now, mainly for pool/sauna amenities. I deff don't want to feel like I'm signing my life over lol
So no worth the cost. Ive been a member of the Los Angeles locations for more than 5 years. The price went up during the pandemic. Weird, considering it's a luxury gym lacking the luxurious amenities anymore. I think I was paying 255 or 260 before we were locked down, and it went up to 275. In Los Angeles, we can't use the locker rooms, we can't use the showers (they're saving on a water bill), no sauna or steam room (I understand: pandemic, but they're saving money on the maintenance. No showers means no big towels to wash or Kiehls products to supply in the locker rooms and showers (they're saving money), and no pools or jacuzzi even though legally indoor pools can be open at the tier that we're at. And you have to make reservations to go. Sounds like Equinox is saving a buttload of money while charging more for a basic limited gym experience, on par with planet fitness, just with richer clientele. No thank you. They should've slashed their prices when they're providing wayyyyyy less. It's bad enough prepademic, the locations close pretty early (Friday through Sunday being the worst), and they're constantly closing for employee picnics. Our money is just wasted If you're famous, want to make business connections or marry/date the wealthy, by all means, get a membership
There are so many good home fitness options now...rowing machines, bikes, fitness programs, etc. Buy a 30 pound kettlebell for about $75 bucks, then get some Kiel’s shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel and some fancy towels and it cost you about as much as a month at Equinox. Save $300 for 11 months, do the kettlebell workouts on You Tube, eat right, and after a year you will have $3,300 and a great body.
I did all of that in 2020. The investment in Kiehls at home was such a nice touch. Found some spa towels at Marshall’s too. I have booty bands I use at the park when the weather is warm. I got my membership because it’s subsidized by my employer and it’s too cold to workout outside and my studio apartment is too small. Definately would still workout at home if I needed to budget, but for me I am lucky my employer does cover it
Sometimes I think people Also like the social aspect to it as well. People like to go somewhere nice without it being an event. That being said, this is a very expensive way to do that.
