Sold. Thank you Taylor. I feel as though alot of Photographers have an agenda or obvious bias when reviewing products. You are honest, and about as real as it gets. Dollar value is superb. Get the camera best suited to your style of shooting and budget. It really is that simple. 4k cropped? Big deal- shoot it in 1080, and if you need 4k at full frame this isn't for you. Appreciate your feedback.
I shot my first wedding with it yesterday and it was great. Autofocus was fast and responsive. The only hiccup I ran into was that I couldn’t get high speed sync to work for my ocf. Had to use my 750 for that.
Great video! I’m a stills only shooter(with a d750). Your video answered a lot of concerns I had. Low light performance. The Z5 clicks a lot of boxes for us only photographers. I will order it with a 24-70 f4, and what I save between $$ CFExpress/QXD cards/reader and added cost of a Z6, I will be able to buy a 14-30 or prime.
Thanks for sharing your opinion on this camera which I have owned for two years now. I totally agree with you. It has more than enough features and I think 24 megapixel is more than enough resolution. I mean 12 megapixel was good when I had my 300. And I’m really enjoying the flip down screen for low level shots. I’ve shot 26 weddings over the years but I’m hoping I can do mainly still life and product photography or food photography with this camera. So I’m sure it’ll work just fine. I noticed you’re using, the 35 mm 1.8 Z lens on a number of your pictures and I really like the Bokeh on that lens. That was my main lens. I always shot with 35 and 85 and very seldom used a fifty.. when I bought my Z5 though I picked up a 40 F2, and I love that lens. It’s that nice focal length between 35 and 50 that just seems to be perfect for everything. And the Bokeh on that lens is excellent as well and quite a bit smaller than the 35 1.8. I will now use it on my Zfc as a longer portrait lens. Excellent video thanks for your thoughts. Regards Gerry PS I agree with pretty much everything you’ve said about this Camera.
Thanks for the video, man! I totally think the Nikon marketing dept. messed up on this one. Classifying as an ‘entry level’ camera is hurting the Z5 from a press/public perception perspective. I shot two gigs yesterday with it and the D850, and the Z5 performed almost identically to my Z6 (which I would never use for a paid gig...my paranoia needs two card slots!). Aside from the video specs (1080p is good enough for me), everything the Z5 offers is such a good value overall. The one thing I am waiting for is Adobe support for Z5 RAWs shot with 3rd party glass...but that will come. I look forward to more of your journey with this VERY capable camera!
sexysilversurfer that is a great point, from a business preservation perspective. For those looking at the camera for actual use, however, it is highly capable and beyond the ‘entry level’ moniker. Those who may benefit, or find it a valuable tool are already writing it off as such...without even giving it a chance. I look at the Z5 as a great appetizer until we get the main course of a pro-level mirrorless option from Nikon. Those who say get the Z6 instead have a point (especially if you need the video specs), but I need two card slots for the work I do, which is stills-based. IMHO the Z5 has the best of the Z6, plus what I need to use it for paid gigs. Everyone has their own needs and use cases, and the Z5 ticks many of the boxes for me!
The 1080p video looks pretty good! It's just a shame they made the 4K virtually unusable with that huge crop. If they had made it 1.5X, at least that would make sense with DX lenses, but the crop is so severe that it just makes the 4K essentially useless. The Z50 is probably a better video camera than the Z5 as a result. It seems like it was done purely for market segmentation and not due to technical limitations of the hardware, but maybe I'm wrong. But, if you're just doing videography for weddings, 1080p might just be good enough. When this camera was first released, I thought it made a ton of sense for wedding photographers.
Personally I’d love to use this camera for travel films and pics. I think the ibis is a great addition!! I’m so glad Nikon improved autofocus for video.. I was really considering switching to canon just for that dual pixel autofocus. But I’m too invested in my Nikon glass
Now that you have used both the Z5 and the D780, in video mode and both in live view, what is the difference between the two? aside from the Z lenses. e.g. focusing modes? etc...
Mostly just the usability. With the Z5 you’re always on live view/evf so there’s no delay. D780 to flip into live view takes some time. Z5 it’s kind of nice to seamlessly switch between the lcd and evf so quickly. If you’re just using the d780 in live view I would suspect it’s mostly the same though
How are the colors in comparison to the R6 and Leica? In a previous video about the R5 you were raving about the colors . Just wondering what are your thoughts on the image IQ of the Z5 ?
I would love if you can show the picture quality difference in the z5 and z6 or z6ii, if you can use it in low light situations and a wedding with z5 with Lightroom edits that would be great! 😁👍🏼
Thanks for sharing. Please tell me what settings do u use when having people moving besides AF-C, what area mode do you use? Going to have my first weeding soon. When you messure the light, do you like central or matrix metering? Im using nikon z5. Regards ❤
Other than perhaps the 4k crop, the other things (like the BSI sensor) are not really that relevant unless you find yourself routinely shooting at high ISO (like 6400 and above, which some may) and you need to do some shadow recovery or rather, you want the best possible shadow recovery... then the BSI sensor is a plus, but for regular shooting in good light or with artificial light, the Z5 can be capable. Where it probalby struggles the most is in really low light so like a reception, it may not be the best for that specific part of a wedding -- the Z6 may be better. (of course I'm writing this now when we have the higher-end cameras out like the Zf, Z8 and Z9 which would be ideal for weddings, but one shouldn't discount the Z5 because of its price and some of the features that were eliminated. If you're looking for one or two backup bodies then the Z5 can be a steal, especailly when it goes on sale for $1000-$1100). It can do most of the things that the Z6 II and the other 24MP Z cameras can do, but for a fraction of the price. Of course there are some caveats but with updated firmware, it's a worthy contender at least for a backup camera.
I absolutely love my Nikon Z5. I shoot it with all the Viltrox FF primes and they are beautiful. How do you feel about the DX mode with the Z5? I sort of want the Viltrox Pro 75mm f1.2 and the Surui Sniper lenses.
Taylor, A great review. I’ve been looking hard at this Z5. The one hesitancy is low light focusing ability (like street photography after dark with no focus assist light). I’m thinking in the 3200 and 6400 iso range. What do you think? Craig
I plan to upgrade next year and the Z5 seems perfect for me (nature, portraits and the occasional event) but the lenses are too expensive comparing to my other alternatives 😩 I have no need for the video stuff so I can't see the Z5 as an inferior to the Z6 for example as many call it, it's just a different camera
Good review, thanks. Desperately seeking a painless route into exploring Nikon mirrorless coming from a bag full of Nikon DSLRs and lenses - and as a straight photographer the usual reviews almost always focus less on the needs of a working photographer than on all the technological gizmos and bells and whistles. Based on what you’ve said I think I’ll go with a Z5 and 24-70/2.8 S while I wait for an actual pro Z body to go alongside it. Would much rather stay Nikon than jump over to Sony just so all the other bits and pieces will still work. Cheers!
How's the Af performance in comparison to z50? Please reply I'm planning to pick a z5 in 2days, and i already have a z50.. I'm getting mixed opinion on z5 AF, please respond 🥺
The Z forum at DPreview is replete with many users struggling with AF in low light and this seems to be a common complaint in other forums as well . I was very interested in picking up the Z5 /24-200 kit but do alot of outdoor work in low light . Overall it seems you had no issues? Appreciate your time in putting together your review ....many thanks
I am not happy with the Z5 focus speed in low, or even moderate light. My Z50 actually is better in this area. And I have installed the recebt firmware update.
Hey I'm using too Z5 with 35mm S-sries but i have found focus issue could you please guide me take a sharp photo and video with combination of camera Thank you...
how much wiggle room does the camera give for something like the first kiss? what I mean by this is; do you need to nail the timing on the dot? or will the buff catch if you hit the trigger a little early.
Your reviews are great and impartial, but you are in partnership with Nikon. If you could own either the R6 or the Z5 and push came to shove, which would you choose. I personally feel, from a viewers standpoint, that you were more animated and excited with the R6 review.
Hybrid video and/or if cost is a factor, I’d go Z5. Otherwise I’d go R6. Z5 is an incredible camera for the cost, but the R6 with the RF glass is really next level to use.
Taylor Jackson thank you for your honesty. I wonder why Nikon isn’t manufacturing faster glass than they currently do (apart from the f0.95) and directly challenge Canon. There’s plenty of people who’d shoot with them and pay the prices they command.
Have you ever used SonyA7iii? I'd love to know if Z5's eyeAF is as good as Sony's. I currently shoot Nikon, and wanted to go to Sony because that eyeAF is really important for me since I do a lot of movement in my engagement/couple shoots. But since I'm used to Nikon, wouldn't mind not learning a new system
I've checked with all my local dealers in the UK and this camera has to come with this kit lens. Such a pity, as its priced at about £1700 in the UK, and comes with a lens very few people want.
Just wondering if you are finding the 4 fps on the Z5 to be a draw back? You mentioned transitioning from the D780 / D850 both which did 7 fps. Perhaps this is less critical for posed shots vs sports etc but curious to hear your thoughts
I’ve moved to the z6ii now as a main, but for weddings was very happy with 4. For the snowboard content we did this winter, it was very nice to have much more than 4 FPS though
Calling the Z5 as entry level at USD1500, it is plain wrong. This is even more obvious if you compare to Canon where entry level is the RP and under USD 1000.
Agreed. I recently caught a deal on the Z6 w/FTZ for $1,550 brand new. Had the Z5 come in around ~$1,1k, I would have contemplated grabbing one as a second body but for the price, I'm looking at another Z6. 4.5FPS is also insanely below entry level, it's absurd.
All 1080p cameras are not created equal. How does this stack up to a Sony A7 II or D750? Is the low data rate a problem for color grading? Whenever I have seen RUclips videos shot with the a7 II, they seemed a bit soft to me. I don't notice that in the Z5 footage, which is a good thing. I mostly just worry about grading the footage and any motion issues.
I own a D750 - I think the Z50 has the D750 sensor, if the Z5 has the same quality HD as the D750 it should be good. It's a bit frustrating as no one really critiques the Z5 HD so its a bit of a gamble - but Im betting itll be fine.
I picked up the z5 with the intention of doing hybrid coverage. Do you keep your video and photo setting the same when you quick switch from one to the other? I’m wondering if there is a way to make the camera not change the settings between photo and video mode. Also I love your videos it’s been such an inspiration!
Hi Taylor. Great video. Just because you charge less then the other guy to shoot wedding's doesn't make you any less a photographer. Them JPEG shots were great. It's not all about the gear you use. It's how good you use it. I'm a wedding photographer and I also charge less. Not everyone can afford to pay top prices. So keep up the great work. Top man 👍👍
I’m interested in how the camera performs with the lens mount when using FX glass. Which is better and what is it that’s better? I have 3 d750’s and several lenses but want to switch to mirrorless so bad. The z5 price makes that a bit more possible.
I don't have a z5 but I do have a z50 with a decent amount of f mount glass that I use. I've noticed that the autofocus is extremely solid (although noticebly louder, maybe I'm spoiled by the z lenses) when using the official FTZ adapter. The Z5 would've likely been my in my bag if it had come out in June (which is when I was buying a camera). My f mount glass is mostly first party with a couple older sigma lenses so I can't speak for newer sigma's or other third party lenses. I don't have any reason to think they wouldn't work however.
Would it be possible for you to do a video like this for Sony shooters? I have the Sony A7RIII and would love to get into wedding photography, and have a Sigma 35mm f1.4, and Sony 85mm f1.8 lens.
bro currently the Z5 and Z50 both of them so close in price,,i don't care if i spend couple handred $ for getting full frame,,but i need my camera for video & stils which one is better for my purpose? can we say Z50 is better for video because it doesn't has crop video?
Z5 will be able to utilize all the lenses Nikon is putting out. Z50 can still use them but with the crop which isn’t ideal. I’m hoping they start releasing more crop lenses for the z50 since I love the form factor of it
Our local shop got allocated like 10 kits and only 1 body only. I think nikon sensed there was no demand for the lens and is forcing it out the door haha
FTZ is nice to have. Kit lens isn’t needed. We can do (or could do if they didn’t sell out) body only. I did a priority order through NPS Canada to our local camera shop, so not sure if that was the work around
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto I have the Z6 and 24-70 F4 and 14-30 F4 ... So I do not really think I need the smaller kit lens. I will check if it is possible. :) I also have the D850 and some F-lenses ... but the D850 is the one that stays home if I do not need two cameras. Also, I shoot live video quite often now, and the D850 is not as good for video as the Z6 ... My plan is actually to replace the D850 with either a Z5 or a new Z6 ... :)

Probably had to turn on FP in the menu screen.
i think you need to select AFP

Steve Mattson I disagree. Nikon is desperate to retain its customer base. Even if they break even on the camera they make up on future lens purchases.

What about at high iso?
Good stuff... Trust your opinion greatly.... If you say it’s good.... It’s good... 😎
How does the AF perform for action shots? Like running from point to point. :)
Would it be possible for you to do a video like this for Sony shooters? I have the Sony A7RIII and would love to get into wedding photography, and have a Sigma 35mm f1.4, and Sony 85mm f1.8 lens.
Maybe when the Sony a74 is released. Provided there’s no buffer issues for hybrid coverage
You have the set up you need. You are ready to go.
can you do a small comparison with the a7iii?
bro currently the Z5 and Z50 both of them so close in price,,i don't care if i spend couple handred $ for getting full frame,,but i need my camera for video & stils which one is better for my purpose? can we say Z50 is better for video because it doesn't has crop video?
Z5 will be able to utilize all the lenses Nikon is putting out. Z50 can still use them but with the crop which isn’t ideal. I’m hoping they start releasing more crop lenses for the z50 since I love the form factor of it
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto it means regardless of what Z5 gives you in video ( cropping ) still its better than Z50?... because i use 20mm 1.8 S with it
In the UK, it seems that the Z5 is sold with the kit lens...do you know if you can purchase the body only?
Our local shop got allocated like 10 kits and only 1 body only. I think nikon sensed there was no demand for the lens and is forcing it out the door haha
I would suggest eBay.
In Sweden it is not possible to order Z5 body only? Either it is sold with FTZ and/or the new kit-lens ... How is it elsewhere?
FTZ is nice to have. Kit lens isn’t needed. We can do (or could do if they didn’t sell out) body only. I did a priority order through NPS Canada to our local camera shop, so not sure if that was the work around
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto I have the Z6 and 24-70 F4 and 14-30 F4 ... So I do not really think I need the smaller kit lens. I will check if it is possible. :)
I also have the D850 and some F-lenses ... but the D850 is the one that stays home if I do not need two cameras. Also, I shoot live video quite often now, and the D850 is not as good for video as the Z6 ... My plan is actually to replace the D850 with either a Z5 or a new Z6 ... :)
SIR I GAVE NOT BIG budget THIS NIKON Z5 USED WEDDING IN .. HELP ME SIR ...
how does the z5 AF performs with the ftz adapter using the f-mount 24-70 and 70-200 VRii?
In my experience with primes through the ftz they all worked really well. Usually better and more accurate than on my d850 even
I thought these pix were taken with the Canon EOS R6. Maybe I am wrong.
Nope. Only have the 85 for the canon. These are all from the 35mm Z on my Z5
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto images are beautiful. Traded all my Nikon DSLR cameras and lenses at Henrys. Waiting to get the Z6s.
You are requested to please verify the number of raw buffers at one go.
At 4.5 FPS I expect it will go for a very long time with a proper card. Maybe infinite haha. But I can test to be sure
Record video with Nikon z5???
Nikon z7 , z6 are very bad on focusing..i purchased both .... give me headche in events .... d750 was best of all infocusing
Excelente Nikon Z5.
Does it have same sensor of d750
Great value for the money
An interesting body which would be good as a walk-around alongside my Z7.
As soon as I saw this uploaded I left tik tok to watch this!!
Do you still own the z5
Sadly not
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto alright.... Am thinking of buying the same, would it be good for entry even now
I see a lot of missfocus there...Nikon still sucks at eye af....i really want to get the z6 tho but still, that eye af is meh
