I recently got a Nikon Zf and I'm looking to aquire a second backup body, that's affordable and takes my Z mount lenses. Honestly, I’m leaning towards the Nikon Z5, but with the recent price drops the Z6ii is not much more and is appealing also. Nearly everyone I've spoken to who actually owns a Z5, LOVES it. I love my Zf, but I want something that will act as a more ergonomic and compact backup. I shoot portraits and headshots and an occasional family session. I don't need speed, and I don’t plan on doing video with this backup. I played with a Z5 in the store a bit and it felt really nimble and great to use. In use, I couldn’t really tell much difference between the Z5 and Z6ii. Both nice. Would you recommend the Z5 as a backup to my Zf? I know it’s not as technically advanced or fast but I don’t care. One look at the files the Z5 creates and I’m sold. Would you recommend the Z5 even now in 2024?
@babyboy1971 Z5 imagine quality will be still relevant in 2028. For stills its best bang for buck. Their tiny 40mmf2 is something always on my z5 body.

I’ve never used a Zf or Z6ii so I can’t compare directly. I do still use my Z5 and am happy with how it performs still. I’ve picked up a Z6 but can’t tell a huge difference between the two in how they handle. The Z5 does great for portraits and would like it could fit your needs well.
I use it with my old AF-S lenses and Leica manual lenses which are all pro level fast glass and the main attraction is the full frame sensor and ability to strap virtually every lens known to man on it and get great results. My autofocus body is my A7iii with Sony Zeiss glass and the Z5 is a Leica body for me at a fraction of the cost of an M body. Leica glass with Nikon colors is a unique and satisfying combination, I don't care about video on a entry level camera and leave that to my A7iii when needed. People are expecting $1000 dollar cameras to be as robust and feature rich as $5000 pro cameras on RUclips which is ridiculous lol.
"It struggles pretty bad here", "well, it's not locking on", etc. You seem to be having the same problems I am having with auto focus on my new Z5. It struggles pretty bad to focus. Thinking about returning mine for something quicker to focus.
I use mine for weddings in all sorts of terrible light. It works great for me when I use it like I’ve showed in the video. I don’t think it’s the best camera ever obviously, but for the price point I think it performs great.
I also have trouble with the eye detector.I shoot portraits and events and I always have trouble getting my photos sharp. I don’t have problems for urban or landscape photography .
Thank you Hunter for an awesome in detail review of the Nikon Z5 focusing issues and solutions. I am looking to purchase the Z5 for weddings and portraits with some light video work. I think the z5 offers good value at a low cost and I’m hoping I can work around the focusing issues.
Hi I started photography with Z5 then I moved to D500 and D850 before migrating to Sony A7iv. The advantage of the Sony is the tracking. But since I'm taking wildlife, the truth is there is no single camera that did everything good: For Z5 its low light af is poor due to tele lens are not fast. For D500 it's the best af for perched birds but when a bird flies its keeper is only 20-40% depending on conditions. For D850, it's about the same as D500 but is lower in keepers in both perched shots and flights. Lastly the Sony is super in birds in flights and get it very fast. But the perch shots is terrible! Many times the camera doesn't find focus and just freeze in an unfocused position when its confused. So I can tell u eye af is not so good and I dun expect it too much at all.
Thanks for the video trying to figure out if z5 is worth the jump in point or original z6. Looking to use it for street photography / city scape and night city shots
I'm deciding on getting another Z5 vs a Z6. I think the Z5 is a great photographer's camera. If you do dual media or much video work, maybe the Z6 is worth it.
@@Hunter.Peterson thanks getting close to buying it hopefully it goes back on sale. However I do not think Nikon is known for having many sales. I'd mainly use it for photography. I have another camera for video
Iso 8000 perfectly usable as long as you get the exposure right and don't need to boost shadows much in post I can go to 25600 with a little tlc in post I can get the image clean and sharp but that's shooting raw jpegs is not recommended with this camera because the raw files are excellent
Hi I'm glad to see a complex review, I would like to buy a z5 and replace nikon d810, I would like to know if it's worth it !? At the moment I own a 3-year-old d810, I'm most interested in the iso part because I can't find any conclusive documentation anywhere regarding the high iso noise, which is better. Thanks for your time and I hope you can help me make a decision.
@@aureliancostache5347 from d810 to Z5 is downgrade.from high end professional camera to low grade entry level toy camera. Don't waste money. If you need an upgrade you may go for sony A7(3).
Turn off (uncheck) small area wide area point. Only stay with pin point single point and auto area. Ur focus now as fast as ur need. Also eye focus doing well then u select the auto area with both af-s Or af-c

I haven’t used a D810, so I can’t comment on it. I will say I feel comfortable using my Z5 up to 12,000 ISO for weddings where my D610 I wouldn’t push above 6400.
I would love to get your feedback on these: ruclips.net/video/Dgq80FrrLXs/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/SuM6nvU0exs/видео.html where I test AF-C vs AF-F on the same lens. I have no trouble with AF-S, but in AF-C mode, the focusing seems to shift around quite a bit. This results in really poor performance when I hold the shutter down for continous shots while tracking a focus subject (using back button AF or shutter button.. not too relevant).
New firmware makes it noticeably better. And stay off those Facebook groups man lol there all toxic and rarely offer anything positive. Pin point still sucks tho the tracking box is the best mode why not use a 50 1.8 ? That's a ff lens
Af-c of z5 can't be compared to the focus of dslr from 10g ago, z5 is something terribly slow and bad! 3d tracking literally doesn't work or has anything to do with the fantastic performance of the same on dslr

Go for canon R3.it's the best camera for capturing fast actions
This is before the big firmware update?

I haven’t shot a D7500, and haven’t done much macro work so I can’t comment on that.
No low pass filter on d7500 sensor.
More details produce by d7500.
How is set auto focus and area mode in nikon z5
Not sure what you are asking.
nice video. everyone says eye af is trash but im using the z7ii on my channel and have no problems haha. Maybe it comes down to the user!
It seems pretty polar, either people love it or hate it. I'm looking forward to getting some portrait work in and see how it works.
Has there been a AF firmware update since this video. Did it improve things
I don't think there has been an update to the AF. I'm going to do another video with some updates hopefully soon.
Your problem at the reception was probably because you were at F4??? Not the cameras fault. Primes are relatively cheap.
Completely agree with you.
How's 8000 ISO? Any grain?

Like Nate said, 8000 is usable. Of course there is grain, but it’s manageable in RAW.

Biggest diff you will find is weight reduction. ISO performance is same.
