The first concert I ever went to by a well known band was Motörhead. Brian Robertson just replaced Fast Eddie. At one point Lemmy just quit playing for a couple of seconds, because he saw a girl with big tits (his words, not mine 😬). I didn’t even really notice a huge difference. That bass rig had so much high end, it sounded like a second heavily distorted guitar. It was a concert I’ll never forget. For many reasons. 😬
Hey Mario. Great post. I lost my Motörhead virginity, and had my eardrums perforated, in March 1979 at The Apollo in Glasgow. Overkill tour. Still have the merch; programme and badges. The tour t-shirt long gone. Saw them in Glasgow and Edinburgh every tour until the early nineties. Eagle is from my home town, and occasionally drank in my then local, the John D. He’d bashfully on occasion talk of the tours. And the great man himself. Incredible times, amazing music and wonderful people.
“I believe that’s (super bass 100) a guitar amp”. It was Marshall’s bass amp. The circuit is similar to a super lead but optimized for bass by different cap, resistor and pot values. Then as amps evolved the JCM800 lead and bass series became more separated. The JMP super bass 100 is a dedicated bass amp.
By all accounts Lemmy would not have wanted much low end on this plugin, probably he would have sneered at the whole thing, but anyway let’s keep going shall we..
A lot of the reason is that guitar amps (and also their speakers) tend to roll off frequencies 80Hz and below. This will give a nice midrange punch, but not a whole lot of deep bass. A proper bass amp will have the low side of the eq tuned to around 30-40Hz and will typically use speakers that can reproduce those frequencies with some authority. That caters to the traditional role of a bass much better than a typical guitar rig.
I got a pretty convincing Lemmy sound out of a Mesa Stiletto Trident through a Hughes&Kettner Attax 200 4x12 with a Grass Roots Forester 500 bass... Mind you, the amp croaked after a while (well a pre-amp tube did) but I think that was because of some mods I had done to it for more distortion on guitar...
Guys at Softube, it would be great if you could put together a Duff McKagan bass unit like the Lemmy plugin. (Amplifier, cab, chorus pedal, microphones, presets.) It doesn't matter if you can't use the exact brand names for legal reasons. ( + Someone please make a bass sample library with one of Duff's Fenders.:))
In my opinion Lemmy's bass never sounded its best on the Cameron Webb albums. The albums overall have a great sound, but its all a wall of guitars. Lemmy's bass intro on Rock Out for instance sounds way too muddy. The best bass sound Lemmy ever had was on the Stage Fright Dvd. I've heard rumors that the FOH tech used to have a Di box to blend a clean bottom end signal with the amps bright overdrive tone picked up by the mic's from the cabinets, as opposed to trying to get more bottom end out of his bass rig. Not an unusual technique. But Lemmy sure made it sound unusual.
What happened to Lemmy's bass guitars after he passed ? I assumed his Son has them all....but never seen anything in writing about where his gear ended up
