I've only been 3d printing for 2 weeks now and I didn't realize exactly how much I didn't know. I still don't even know what I don't know. I'm very thankful for your videos and everyone else's helpful videos. If it wasn't for you guys I'd never be able to do this.
I do all my sculpting and a lot of printing prep in 3D-Coat. One tool it has will slice the model into pieces like this but it will also automatically add registration pegs and holes for gluing the printed parts back together. Of course you can adjust the shape of the pegs, number, position, etc.
@@evilwearsgucci Not even close. Luban does essentially the same thing and is considerably cheaper ... but it's still not free. Slic3r and Meshmixer are the only free programs I know of that actually work for this, and I don't really like using Slic3r.
This video quickly answered my questions. You did a damn good job explaining how to cut big models, and introduced some clever tricks using other tools that are likely already in our arsenals for 3d printing. You saved me countless hours of pulling my hair out. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I like that you broke down slicing and the options in a single video in an easy to understand manner. You managed to combine about 10 videos in a single and digestible bite.
Just bought my first 3d printer and have been watching every single video you have made, can't wait for it to get here so I can make me an Iron man suit!!!
Thanks for this video. I've been printing since 2012 when I got a MakerBot (I know, boooooooo!) and had NO IDEA Slic3r had that function and have been re-modeling things that were too big for the printers I've owned over the years. Call me dopey but when I've asked on Reddit/Thingiverse over the years absolutely NO ONE could give me an answer on how to cut models apart. I was actually called stupid for asking a few times and stopped even though I knew it existed somewhere. Thanks again!
@@FranklyBuilt lol! Ya think? By the way because of your video I was able to slice a solid model of Deckard's blaster from Blade Runner. I'm going to try to sand cast it in Aluminum on Twitch this week. That's how quickly you changed just one person's life, even just a little, with your video. Thanks again. Subscribed!
Slic3r worked great for me, thanks! I was looking up tutorials and they were all so complicated and I remembered you had made one. 6 minutes in and my problem was solved!
Getting a new board and touch screen installed on my Ender 3 Pro this weekend then I am going to be pushing towards printing my suit for next years Indiana Comic Con. I was suggested your videos and found this one on slicing. Thank you. You make things eeasy to learn and process. You're a legend of the 3D Printing World.
You just helped me save my head and wall i was banging my head on a wall trying to figure out how to do things and this video helped me so much thank you i really needed to see this video
I'm a totally noob at this, haven't printed anything yet, only just set up the Ender printer and opened a file I got to find it's bigger than the plate. Thanks for sharing, I figured there must be a way to cut up the model into smaller pieces, I just had no way of knowing how to go about it.
when i needed to print some item that are bigger than my 3D printer... i used to use some cardboard to make the design "in real life" and then split them in many piece and take the dimension for each item to make in the 3D designer... and print each item alone xD thx for the video.
Haha I was halfway through writing a comment asking why not use a 3D pen instead when you explained why. Awesome video - and channel, really, been watching some of the backlog to try to learn some more stuff.
I had no idea that slic3r could fuse pieces of models together as long as they're saved and exported correctly from the creator. I was thinking though if your model comes in 12 different pieces and there isn't a full model to one-shot there might be a good reason (besides size) the modeler didn't include that. Might be a good idea to reach out to them and ask why. Awesome tutorial Frank!
Great video as always. One tip though, I have heard frank refer to this in every video he mentions super glue in, all super glue is cyanoacrylate. There aren’t really 2 part super glues. Or if there are they are all technically 2 part if you use an activator. Activators will work with any super glue, you don’t have to buy the same activator to go with whatever brand glue you buy. Or If you have left over glue/activator it’ll work with whatever activator/glue you can find. I’ve used mitreapel, 2p10 and starbond accelerators on cheap super glues, along with gorilla glues, starbond, and 2p10 glue And have not noticed any difference 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for this how to. Now i can cut my mk25 helmet perfect for my Ender 5 plus. I know it can do it in 1 piece but with wat to much support. You're the man, the myth, the legend
I'm entering 3d printing just now and I was really expecting it to have quick and easy slicing tools, with built in attachments and snaping mechanism between parts. Maybe a feel more years ahead :D
3d builder dies the same things slic3r does, but it doesnt randomly scale you models to 70% and its faster. Also the orienting feature is way better than the "lay flat" in cura. Try it out if you want, its fun !
I like to use meshmixer with plugs so they all fit perfectly. Great video love the swords, i made the buster sword not long ago. With my gaps with print i use both 3D pen and soldering iron. Pen to fill in gaps and Solder to smooth them out.
Pretty new to 3D printing and your video helped A LOT. Especially for the stuff on slic3r and the support blocks on Cura, which I never about until now. Great tutorial man! Well worth the 26 minutes lol
So I know those titles saying best settings for blank printer are a little clickbaity but for newbies they’re definitely helpful because it gives you a starting point these are settings I know work for someone and their printer not perfect now let me adjust from there to see what works best for me and mine
I want to print several tall slender items. I am trying to place them next to each other and create supports between them to make them more stable similar to your sword printed as a block. I can't find anywhere that shows how to create the interconnects between parts on the same build plate?
Hey frank I have a question. When you are in mesh mixer or slicer and you need to cut a helmet, when you scale it in those programs before cutting, will they stay the same size in cura? I know you probably said whether or not in the video, but I didn’t catch it so could you help me out?
Most informative video I've seen for a while on making 3d printing, covering most of the things I wish I knew when getting my Ender3 ,thanks for sharing. Video is fast, but to the point.
I just ordered a kinda small 3D printer and was like damn I can't print big stuff w this and it's kinda too late am I screwed? You're right I had no idea about this thank you.
That was awesome ! Love it ! Frankly Built can you share the configuration of Profile that you made in Ultimaker Cura to get a good result as you. Thanks Bro ! Keep doing great videos !
How do you glue all the pieces together with flat edges like that while making it stable? I was thinking they would need to be similar to puzzle pieces or it would snap off easily? Tips please!
Thanks Great for the information. I'm trying to scale up a print. I found a hand but it 2 inches tall I want to make it 7 inches tall and 5 inches wide, how can I do this on a bambu a1?
I have a photon s, and have realized that I should have gotten a cr10 or something similar. I thought I’d be printing minis and stuff but all the files that catch my eye are big or wearable.
Sir, were you holding a Ender 3? Cause that’s what I have and I wanna build a whole cosplay, probably gonna take a few months but I’m all about that! It’s gonna look so good when I finish it!
So on Meshmixer after you complete your cuts, what then? Do you have to seperate them and save each piece individually? Or can you position them and save it all together?
I am new to 3d printing but i am a 3d artist. So the my question is if I use blender's Boolean operation to cut the model to fit in the printer, will it work?
after you cut the model I noticed the holes in front where it fills back in. Maybe those rods are used to glue it back together?? Just wondering. Great video and as always keep up the great work.

You can also use 3D-Builder (free) to add a cylinder where you want the pegs and then subtracting the cylinder where necessary
Is there a walkthrough on how to slice the model into pieces on 3D-Coat? I just downloaded it and having a tough time finding up-to-date information.

Reddit is the worst place for 3D printing. It’s toxic. Stay way from it haha 😆

Any advice for resin printers? And how do you weld the pieces on detailed sculpts like statues?
great timing! im buying an ender 3 and i know nothing about printing
For rod-shaped sections like a sword handle, one can integrate a threaded hole and a screw

You know when welding you cut a bevel on the two sides so the weld fills in the gap.
just use flashprint ( software that comes with flashforge printers ) you can cut by drawing lines and save as stl than print with cura
Perfecto ! You rocks

I use stock settings in Cura mostly. I just change infill and speed and temp. Those are all things that vary per model and filament
When you exported the chest plate into an stl file. There were two of them, Binary and ASCII @8:12. Which one did you click on?
