Another strategy for preserving fine details at the bottom of a model is to turn off the "Automatically drop models to the build plate" setting (Preferences > Configure Cura> General) and raising the model a millimeter or two off the build plate so that everything at the bottom is on supports regardless of orientation. Z-clearance permitting you may also be able to print more vertically, potentially reducing print time and support material. In some cases, though, doing so may just raise some features that require support, like the eyes on the mask at the beginning, making for taller supports without really reducing material used. It's also a good idea to keep *some* tilt for tall prints to make sure they don't topple over before they finish. So it may not always be the best option, but it's shaved between 30 minutes and 1 1/2 hours off of a few prints for me.
Frank, this was a massive help, I've been struggling with removing supports and the support density has helped me no end, yesterday eas the first time I printed with a raft and used the support density that you described and the supports came of sooooooo easy and didn't leave a massive mess. Thank you
your the man dude, thanks for the help. I picked up a new Ender 3 S1 Plus with the intention of printing helmets. Print orientation has been a real concern of mine since it drastically changes print time and materials used. Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom. Stay blessed!
On my first 3D printed prop, a scorpion mask, I wanted to save some time, because it was my first prop and I didn't know Prince usually took so much time. I positioned it forward, and all of the cracks and crevices were just filled with support material it took blood sweat and tears to get that all out, and I learned a valuable lesson lol
First time printing the iron man helmet on my ender 3 pro. I cut the top in half to fit and printed both parts upside down to cut time, supports, and they came out great. Thanks!
This video was so helpful! I kinda want to start on printing things myself and im trying to learn as much as possible before actually buying a 3d printer and this and many of your videos help me a lot :)
Just looking at the data, making just a few adjustments I can save %10 time, but up to %30 filament. Thanks for the tips. My first print of the Iron Man helmet waas a disaster, but one that you can look and and learn from (which you've mentioned on other videos) I did order an extender kit for my 3D printer to take it to 400x400 so piecing and welding should be eliminated.
I'll decrease my Support Interface Density too. I find that it can be a real pain to sand off at times. I also take advantage of using just a brim, which saves time and filament, but like you said it's not one size fits all.
very good video i started printing only a few months ago it has given me the move i needed to get a new hobby and will say it is worth and its lot of fun to do anyone thinking about it try it P.S if you don't want to spend time making your own most likely someone has done it this is a good way to start as well XD
I know that this was a year ago but this has helped me a lot i didnt know i was supost to make the infill density to 2 it has helped me print things so much better, and Thank you Frank. :p
Nice to know I’m making a Batman mask hopefully today and it was gonnna take 5 days now it gonna take less so I can work on the rest of the suit faster
Its amazing how much 3d printing has improved. I've seen some printers in the affordable $200-500 range. Tempted after watching this video! Thanks for sharing
Another awesome video tutorial. Thanks Frank. As you know, I’m just starting my 3D print journey. My first print is Mjollnir, currently on my Voxelab. All your tips have helped me a ton. Cheers brotha 👌🏼
My bro. Aloha. Great videos as always. Haven't got to printing the nova yet but ironman, black panther, iron spider,, predator and others done on the ender 3 was a mission and a half. Thanks for the information and inspiration 👊🤙
dude this is amazing, i used to jump from video to video in your channel just to find the info i needed and now you put everything i need into just one of them, youre awesome man
Waiting on that PR helmet. Using do3d models the backs print fine in one piece, but I haven't found a way to orient the front that don't use a ton of support and end up cutting them in half somewhere above the visor.
Very informative video for helping me work on how to go about printing a clone trooper helmet. One question though in regard to supports. Are you using the gyroid pattern on those as well as the helmet, and if not what have you found to be the best option? Thank you.
Really helpful video. Thanks man! I've already printed a few helmets. Black Panther being one of them but I need a better one as mine doesn't fit together with magnets and the fit isnt great. Took days too like you said. I will definitely be trying out your tips on printing dome side down for a Mando helmet. I want to print a full suite but I haven't quite got to grips with Armoursmith yet for sizing...
Besides lowering support density, you can also switch the support fill to concentric, and usually save a lot of plastic by dialing in just enough space between the lines to minimize the time spent building support.
Good info man thanks ,go a cr10 v2pro at work and was wondering at what speed i could print and how to save time on prints , we tend to print stuff with alot of supports ,this really helps
In one of your previous scaling vids i noticed we have the same size head (well like 99% the same) what do you scale your mk85 helmet from cgtrader to? Save me printing test rings, love the channel your the reason im making a suit!!
Thank you for the info, I am trying to 3d print the Star Boost whole suit and i am having problems with the Helmet...I am not a small guy 6'4" about 270 and i have a CR10V2, and i need to cut the helmet and use less filament.
I wanted to let you know about the project I had I was talking about it before and I used the lawn the dark filament with some graphite powder and it still glows in the dark check it out do-it-yourself it's pretty cool
Support density....UBER important!!!!! I didn't know the magnet holes have been added!! Genius! Dude. Your PC is amazingly fast!! What are you using to run Cura?? My laptop freezes up SOOOO bad! I absolutely LOVE these tutorials!!! Keep em coming....maybe a Starlord helmet? 😁
I'm getting a haze on my paint. Not sure why... used sandable dupli-color then dupli-color metal cast red. Haze, then used Krypton fusion paint and primer, then red again...same problem...
Hello, I was wondering what your favorite beginner/budget friendly 3D printer would be. I know you have made the videos and streams but I was wondering now if you have an updated version. I was wondering this because of your solov sv 03 video. Do you still recommend that over the creality ender 3?
Hello friend, what a great video. Next week I want to print (for the first time) a Deadpool helmet. What would you advise me regarding speed, infill, overhangs, and temperature? I have an Ender 3 Neo Max and I'm a beginner. Thanks. I hope it's clear, English is not my native language.
What about nozzle size and print quality, I bought one model, rocketeer helmet that in the description says to print with a .8 nozzle, Im using the standard .4 as I don't want to change to a larger nozzle, I know that will increase print time but do I then max out my print quality to .4 or leave it at .15 or .2? Can you go over those settings?
Frank, I am having trouble printing the Cod/ Crotch piece for the Mark 85 Iron Man suit on my Creality CR-10S. I have failed printing several times. May I have some advice?
Any Cura Profiles that would work with the Anycubic Vyper? Still can’t quite seem to get my prints to come out clean. I currently have Cura 4.13 and I am using Amazon PLA
What size nozzle are you using to print and are they the settings you use with that nozzle great video this week thanks for showing us how you are doing it
@@FranklyBuilt so it doesn’t matter what size nozzle you used I am printing with a size 4 on my CR10 V2 and on the Ender 3Pro I was just wondering if I needed to change the nozzles up to a size 6 to use the settings you are using thank you for your help
Hey Frank, Comment... I dont understand why people dont use brims over rafts??? brims so much easier for newbies... As far as the top of the Iron man helmet, I think the opposite way is 100% with no supports to remove from the outside... Hate to question the jersey guy who got me into the Hobby, But after creating my own 3d designed helmets ( Be nice if someone like you gave another Jersey guy a shot to share and not let Niko get ALL the Hype.....We all had to start some where ;) ). Just like to share...
The reason I show rafts instead of brims because of that first layer. People have issue with that. A raft basically “levels” the bed perfectly before the real first layer goes down. It all gives you a chance to catch a bad level a lot faster and is more forgiving then a brim. And as I was talking about it’s all subjective; every helmet and print will be different. I’d rather sand some support spots on the outside and drastically increase print survival and support loss ya know? And I’m not sure what you mean in regards to Nikko haha he sponsors a few videos of mine but you know I share plenty of other model makers stuff haha I just haven’t seen your models yet my dude
@@FranklyBuilt Yes you did, I Instagram ya ;) . Give me a SHOT Frank :) .One of my helmets is the iron man with all the mounts built in. GREAT FOR NEWBIES and non newbies that want a motorized helmet :).... Its original......
like Ur videos, question I'm new to this 3d thing when I got machine it printed fine in center of bed but when i downloaded Cura it started to print in front left corner of plate. need help how do i get it to print in center again.
I got a question, do you alway have to use supports for large prints? I recently printed a 1/6 scale 2018 dodge Durango and it took 32 days because of the supports, which took 4 1/2 filaments. So do I necessary need supports?
Frank: This isn't a one size fits all
Me after a successful print: I'M NEVER CHANGING ANYTHING EVER!!!

Hey sir I have a ender 3 so can you suggest and first' prop for ender 3
I’ve been trying to figure out my supports and how much is needed a couple weeks now to reduce my time and mats use; support blocker. Had no clue

I have a bunch of other videos showing stuff like that. Large props and cutting them up
