  • UPDATE: I just received a free key for CS2 and will be giving it to a random commenter on (or about) Halloween 👻 good luck and stay spooky!
    Cities: Skylines II is more or less a mechanically perfect city building simulator to the point I’m not sure what the devs could add or subtract to make the experience more realistic... now if only they'd optimize the dang thing! Some annoying lag aside, I can still wholeheartedly recommend CS2 to fans of the genre, though new fans might want to wait for that $50 price tag to come down a bit.

    As someone who played the first game and has watched a lot of footage of the second, this is a good review! Specifically, you did a fantastic job pinpointing some of the faults. This game has been criticized for performance already - that's probably the biggest issue and would outright keep me from buying the game. I've also heard that the maps look mostly the same, which I'm sure is deliberate so they can extract more money from DLC. In version 1, radio stations were also DLC and I am not surprised they deliberately limited the base-game options in v2.
    The main game loop was the same in C:S 1 and it does eventually get old there, too. There are milestones and upgrades (more in v2 than v1) but you build for the sake of building and at some point, cash flow isn't a challenge. There are a few scenarios in v1 but it's mostly just a sandbox.
    Things they did do well in this version include better progression, better road-building tools, and much, much better scaling. Graphics, of course, are also much improved. Also, many of the DLC and a few mods from v1 seem to be incorporated into v2.

      Man, I feel like you could've saved me some time and just reviewed the game for me :D glad you felt it touched on the pertinent points, as I hadn't seen any CS2 footage before playing the game. Hopefully the devs can optimize the HECK out of it before it launches to consumers on the 24th... but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high 😅

      @@MEGAthemicro Haha I would have helped more if I'd known you had the game! It would be interesting to know how recent the version is that's out on Steam now. A few content creators for the game have had a copy for maybe a month or so, also, and that version is probably even older.

      My key is about a week old, but I did get this note from the devs: "The game’s performance is still being optimized between now and launch, and optimization is something the devs will work on continuously also after release." So they're obviously very aware of the issues. Whether or not they sort things out by launch is another question...

    • @pianokid103
      @pianokid103 10 месяцев назад +1

      I bet they'll have a free update with some bugfixes not long after launch. But, I do wonder if they are going to keep stringent hardware requirements.

      You bet! CS2 has some performance problems, to be sure, but the overwhelming backlash it's getting for them on RUclips and Steam is a little much, in my opinion.

    I wish you could turn off unnecessary processes like weather, seasons, and tree growth to get some more performance because I would think the AI path finding and background processes probably tank performance the most

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  10 месяцев назад

      That seems like a super common sense solution, right? There is a "Level of Detail" slider that you can drop to low, which makes the trees and stuff render only at close distances. But the game looks kind of bland without... you know... detail!

      Its built with Unity, its doomed from the start. If there is anything Unity sucks extra much at it is handling large amounts of assets on the screen

    Love that this review was done off a laptop! What were the frames you were getting at the 40k+ population and how many of the tiles/milestones had you unlocked by that point?

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  10 месяцев назад +1

      I love my lappy! I'm always gaming/editing on the go. As for frames, I was frequently dipping into the teens (🤢) at the 50k citizen mark. I think I had about 200 tiles and the level 12 or 13 milestone at that point.

  • @Vigulfr

    I played the first one a fair bit but ended up getting a bit bored by it. Mods helped a bit but still found it kinda so-so. This one looks kinda like more of the same really. Might pick it up ona deep discount in a couple of years maybe. Sim City 4 is still the best for me in modern city builders. Then Pharaoh for the old timey stuff. Thanks for the review!

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  10 месяцев назад +2

      You're very welcome, and thanks for watching! Ultimately, CS2 is just a shinier (and laggier) version of CS1... which, but for the lag, is still a pretty good thing. That said, I support most folks wanting to wait for a sale.

  • @Pixelkvist
    @Pixelkvist 10 месяцев назад +2

    I'm so disappointed in the performance! I CS1, my biggest complaint was that the game turned into a photo album once your city reached even a moderate size! They didn't have to make a next-gen game, I would have much preferred a more downscaled version of CS1 where you could actually build huge cities! Instead, it's even WORSE in CS2! This is a big letdown to the point where I won't even buy it (can't really play it anyway with my PC)

    Your jokes were great. Well written for sure.
    I think the issue with this genre and most games now ans days are the expectation thwt patches will likely fix anything on release. We now grade if i game can fox it withon a reasonable time rather than how it works out the box.
    The more this becomes the norm, the less of a voice most people have. At the end of the day its all about money and if ppl will still buy this with a good amount of bugs then they wont care to change or make sure the product releases with bugs.

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! And you're absolutely right-due to patch culture, reviewers (including myself) constantly feel the need to caveat criticism with the fact that "this sucks, but the devs COULD fix this, in which case ignore me." It's a little silly.

    The fact they waited until 10 days before launch to admit there's performance issues is the exact reason I refuse to support these clowns
    No dev team that crumbles to publishers pushes clearly can't stand up for themselves
    Greed greed greed, unoptimized greed

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  10 месяцев назад

      Normally, I wouldn't be that mad at a company for admitting their game needs optimization over a week before launch... but CS2 has been one of the most pre-ordered games on Steam for months. It's not a great look ☹️

    • @MEGAthemicro

So, I am sure the game will run fine when I have 100 sims, but not sure it will do well at 60k.... I want to eventually get the game, but I want to wait and see how things flesh out first.
