To all of you guys saying that CS2 should be compared to first version of CS1 - if I release now new car, that will have as many advantages as first Ford cars over 100 years ago, would you buy it full price to be fair and give me the same time to develop, that Ford had? Or you expect cars produced nowadays to meet modern standards?
Same is here - they give us old car full price.

I can't agree fully. I won't bash the video saying CS1 should be compared like it was at launch. Updates should definitely be included.
But 2 categories specifically, maybe 3, is wrong.
1st is the sport fields, CS1 has no sport fields in its parks except if you buy the sport fields content creator pack. At least CS2 has sport fields in vanilla.
2nd one was the university building, I feel like university should be compared to the universities we had in CS1. Like the actual assets, not the campus area. It remains to be seen of area type tools come to CS2. Until then I wouldn't compare it with the functionality of painting tools which were mostly DLC. Not everyone had the campus or airport one. But I think most had industry and Park life which is more fair to compare to CS2.

@@japes7 yeah, but there is an answer in CS1 for basically everything there is to compare. Honestly I believe that if the devs would want a step forward, they should take EVERYTHING what players use from CS1 (every most used traffic mod, every good DLC, every popular asset etc.) and put it in vanilla CS2 for further growth. Now it seems like CS2 is in need to chase what is already there in CS1.
You wouldn't buy my company's new car for full price if it has 50 maxspeed, no AC, manual side windows etc, to give me some time to update it, right?

    • @sauvpcpc

What CS1 taught us was that we could have 3D assets by the thousands. It's incredibly easy to import a 3D asset in the game. Putting an american football stadium in theCS2 really doesn't impress me. On top of that, those assets are lifeless. It's a 3D assets with "+10 attractivity" or so and doesn't really bring a real gameplay. Your citizen dont care if its a dog poop place or a soccer stadium. That's why CS2 to me is really an "old car", sold at full price. They just threw away years of content just to bring us a new texture pack.

Because to the first question we can surely answer no, but to the second one, it's quite sure that the answer is yes, because CS2 settles a brand new start to the game (which, yes, isn't at the level of its big brother with years of experience) on which a bunch of mods and DLCs will be built, where CS1 is now very limited in the progress we can offer to it because of its age.

But these DLCs are like adding batteries, sunroofs, electric windows, seat heaters, nav screens... Those are all great to have, but not essential to the functionality of a basic car, which is more or less the same design from a 1991 Ford Taurus to a Ford Taurus today. The engine block has been rehauled, and the 2024 model is definitely a lot better, but you don't get the sunroof or electric windows still unless you pay the extra.

Residential, commercial, office, industry, vehicles and trees are either Workshop, DLC or CCP.

I have both games, CS2 looks more realistic and I like how you can zoom in and see more detailed textures along with the better animated citizens. When they optimize it up more and create more mods, right now its a basic model stripped down version Corvette. Thats ok, I think I'll go back to my suped up to the max Dodge Charger CS1 and continue to have fun. Don't get me wrong, when the supe up that Corvette CS2, I'm on it.

They also had all those years to come with CS2 and when you releasing part 2 of any game, baseline should be already better than what previous game has to offer actually. Idk about anyone else, but I disagree with a lot of those ratings. The overall look of CS2 is much more realistic and interesting.
I think the main issue with CS1 is that everything is so bright and almost flat looking. In CS2, the colors are much darker and look more like real life than a video game.
CS2 looks more like high resolution google earth and CS1 just looks like a game
I'm also a big fan of having any and all greenery in a city. I don't like the look of concrete and plain brick because it's usually just too dull. I think that CS2 does a better job at including greenery in a lot of assets.

This comparison really show how little work has been done by CO and that they chose to sell old with new texture. It's a massive step backwards this CS2. They could easily have created a texture DLC and that's it, alongside the few modification on road tool (which actually wasnt very needed as we all had mods improving our tools such as Anarchy). But no, they prefer to erase years of content, just to sell us new textures. And now they'll be happy to spend years recreating their previous DLC and sell them again. Very upsetting.

A lot of people say that the comparison should be CS1 at start vs CS2 at start, but that is really not the best comparison... CS2 is supposed to be a successor, so should be as good or better than the first. CS2 I feel has gone backwards in terms of ability than CS1 is at it's current state, however Vanilla to Vanilla comparison, I feel that CS2 incorporated many features that you need a MOD for in CS1. Now that CS2 is out, I don't think CS1 is going to get better from Colossal...CS2 is the future and will be the focus for sure. CS1 is still relevant however, and will still be community supported for the foreseeable future. I look forward to CS2 and the content that they will bring...but they have to be spectacular DLC's in order to keep from loosing players. Only time will tell

I agree with the video, but the comparison isn't fair, at least in the current of CS2. Video waa entertaining and I'm looking forward to another one when things get leveled out a bit.

So I'm contemplating between buying CS1 or CS2. I am a casual builder with some experience in SimCity, but I've wanted to try something new for years now. My idea was to buy CS1, but as the years went by, CS2 was released (I don't have much free time) and I see all the criticism surrounding it.
So as a kind of beginner, who won't spend 10 hours daily on the game, but rather just play it casually sometimes, which game would you recommend?

If you don't want to mess around with a bunch of mods and custom assets, you should probably go with CS2. Just make sure your computer can handle CS2, because it's quite demanding.

Beyond the comparisons today, instead of at launch for example, the simple fact is in order to rub our noses in it later despite all our complaints about both games in the present being valid and true, they will and need to do whatever they can to fix CS2 to salvage their reputations/ego's. INSTEAD OF ADMITTING THEIR "NOT FAILURES", BUT NEGLECT AND BAD CHOICES...
And to try and prove that we were wrong and erase the truth along the way, retro-actively. They'll rewrite history, blame their customers YET AGAIN for not being patient enough or showing these ego-centric and self-deluded $$$$ grabbers that we're the problem and not them. THAT'S THEIR REAL MISSION RIGHT NOW. NOT TO GIVE US WHAT THEY FAILED TO DELIVER WITH THE FIRST GAME, OR SECOND GAME ON IT'S RELEASE... BUT TO PROVE ALL OF US WRONG IN THEIR OWN MINDS LOL They have, several of their employees, made comments that back up this sentiment. All anyone has to do is search out some of their comments about these topics. Online or in comments sections. Their actions/ lack of actions speak volumes as well.
We all KNOW had badly this company neglected CS1 in many ways and made the game even more unplayable in the end by bloating it with un-needed and mostly unwanted things instead of fixing what was still missing or wrong with their game. Not to mention how they used it as a beta version for it's entire run just to produce the second product. They still haven't even updated or patched some stuff from previous DLC'S that need fixing. Like the metro in the international airport only working when it feels like it. about 10% of the time without destroying the metro with moveit's select all feature and plopping down a new metro. FROM 2015 LOL
Reality is, the people behind this company don't DESERVE for any of the people they basically crapped on and abused for 8 years to spend more money on their products. And we desperately, just a couple years ago were begging them to release a new version. Then they abandoned and insulted us and even seemed to intentionally sabotage the game on loyal customers and spit in our mouths at the same time.
I still enjoy playing CS1 for the most part. I remember waiting up all night for the pre-order to drop and be downloaded. For the only downloadable instead of installable game I ever have or ever will purchase. This experience is why I WILL NEVER buy another game without physical media again. Or trust that "playable offline" promise either lol
I no longer care if they somehow, accidentally, get close to their promises for over a decade now, I simply can't bring myself to spend any more money with this company.

CS1 is a vastly superior game. The only thing that CS2 has done better is highways and interchange tool functionality. Where CS2 wins by far is the colour pallet. It's way more grounded and realistic which makes it more pleasing for the eye.
The bloom of CS1 makes it look too cartoonish for me.
Because of this alone, Cities Skylines wins for me in terms of aestetics.
Another big plus is the addition of medium density housing in CS2.
    But... that's it.
Cities Skylines doesn't have the best assets
And it doesn't have many assets to begin with.
I find that we're very limited in what we can place. Both functionally and visually speaking
My biggest issue is that there's no traditional European architecture anymore.
But even beyond that - I wish for more variation for every type of building.
Give us train stations, grave yards fire houses etc. with different looks and different sizes.
You could easily integrate a little drop down arrow on every asset.
Click on the Elementary School and select from 3 possible assets or something.
    That would be amazing.
Right now, everything is so... bland.

this video is a poor representation of comparison. you compare things such as: bridges, walking routes, industrial zones... which are present in the CS1 DLCs which were released a few years after the release of this one. so it's normal that it's better than in cs2, if everything was the same there would be no point in creating a new game. You have to compare the 2 games to their initial release dates

Not sure why you'd pick CS1 police station, it looks like a generic building to me. CS2 one has plenty of details and a functional garage, surely it's objectively more aesthetic? As for the others.. Well it's a bit of an unfair comparison, main issue would be lack of assets.
Anyways, one thing I wish for is buildable train/metro stations like in Transport Fever 2.

For sure we need more assets, but in that CS1 was at it's end of life, and #2 at the beginning: to make a fair comparison you should take the release version of 1. Pretty sure that if done that, the new release would win with a landslide.

C:S2 just has zero interest level for me. The traffic AI makes it essentially unplayable. I would be able to get around that np if it wasn't for the fact the graphics are terrible, the assets make no sense, the performance is embarrassing (in fact so bad i feel legal trouble is heading towards this game) and the mods are policed. There's not a single aspect of C:S2 that exceeds (or even comes close to meeting) the standards of C:S1. It's going down in history as one of the decade's worst game launches.
