It's not the opinions on music thats a problem. Kpoppers think they are sharing their so called opinion and yet generalise and expect all to propagate the same way they do. Majority of them can barely frame knowledgeable explanations over the song. A person who really understands music would have talked about the choir composition, the creepiness of production in certain places like at the end, the beat, the interesting use of repetition in the chorus that tactically pulls you into his frustrating need to be freed, the correlation to his previous artistry like it being a reply to 'lie', and finally the usage of auto tune in a positive or negative critique. But all kpoppers know is to disregard people who like the tracks for absolutely valid reasons and spam rubbish.

I honestly liked the song. In fact the distorted vocals is what the gave the song that darker edge to it. I don't know why people are bashing Jimin for that because he sings pretty well and the autotune here was clearly for stylistic purposes and not to improve his vocals or anything. I respect Jimin for taking this risk. He could have sung a song like Lie or filter. This would create polarised opinions yet he still went for it. I am happy he is breaking out of his supposed sweet and sexy persona. Also this is just my opinion but I think he didn't completely express himself as a bad boy or a dark one . Here he is vulnerable with a touch of sin.

I feel like the "Opps" issue is selective outrage. I am an African American who is also on black Twitter. On my time-line, I didn't see black Twitter being upset. Instead, all I heard about was kpoppers having a problem. So that let's me know it's not black people as a collective being upset, it's kpoppers weaponizing the word for their hate. Not to say there may not be some black people who aren't happy about it, but I think the majority don't find it offensive or don't care. The irony is the people using it fir hate shows they are Jimin's Opps😂.
I'm so tired of the auto tune argument. You can clearly tell it wasn't used to help sing on key but instead as a stylistic choice.
I think Jimin did phenomenal, and I can't wait for the next song to come out.
    Thanks for another great video.

@piasambleben2796 I don't know about every right, but I do know he wasn't appropriating it, and it was more appreciating. The one thing that BTS has always done is give respect to and appreciate black culture. They have time and again said part of their influence comes from black culture. They have included black singers, producers, songwriters, dancers, etc. in different projects. They gave money to blm. That's one of the reasons I think most black fans like me feel BTS is authentic and genuine. They aren't looking to make fun of us or use us. They aren't just paying lip service. They actually back everything up with action, so I will always support BTS.

Totally agree with you. The term "opps" was used before rappers coined it. I'm black and old and have listened to rap/hip-hop when it was still on the streets and underground (no pun intended JHOPE). Jimin used the term to define his OWN opposition. There is no AAVE here. No one owns a definition PERIOD. I have seen and heard worse. Rappers get it and have embraced the opps term. If you like it great, if you don't fine. An opinion is one thing, name calling unnecessary. Keep an open mind and understand art is experimental just as much as creativity. I stan BP and BTS and It's really sad to see the back and forth.

Honestly when I heard it I thought he just shortened opposers to opps ... not even opinions since it only has one p. I didn't think anything of it until my teenage daughter asked me if I knew what that meant. In my little bit of research that I've done though, it appears to me that the actual AAVE is the entire phrase, "f* THE opps". So you wouldn't say "f* YOUR opps", bc that's not the "proper" AAVE phrase. But Jimin said, "f* your opps"; so no AAVE violation here ... imho. Now whether this is a close coincidence or an unintentional misuse, only the writers would know for sure and we will see how it is handled. But the phrasing in the song wouldn't work if he said the full word ... whether opinions, opposition, opposers, operatives, opportunities or any other word that starts with opp- and has more than one syllable! So I'm going to lean on the side of close coincidence. Anyway, I love the song, the choreo, the MV, the instrumentation and ALL that is Jimin. 💜

The thing about AAVE and K-pop is that it’s obvious that the idols have no idea what they’re saying bc a lot of the time the lyrics make no sense, then it comes of as disingenuous and offensive. If they want to use cool/trendy lingo they should at least do it properly. I also think ppl were upset about the “opps” line bc that kind of vocabulary is so far removed from anything we know about jimin like it’s not something I’d believe he would say on a normal day

As a black army, I don’t think opps was necessary in the song tbh but that’s just me and im not mad about it. Also I find it very weird that non black kpop fans are the ones being loud about this and accusing jimin of using a blaccent, why are you a non-black kpop fan engaging in a convo that has nothing to do with your community? It’s weird and not right. Also about the autotune discourse, people are acting like that made the song horrible/was in 90% of the song when that isn’t true, jimin used excessive autotune in specific parts and this was an artistic choice, The autotune was artistically injected into the music, it was so well placed so it feels like there’s a tone of contrast vocally between each section. The autotune adds to the song and was most definitely not used in 90% of the song, it was used in specific parts on purpose and i liked it and so did many producers/vocal coaches that I’ve seen so far, there is a difference between using autotune to cover up horrible vocals and using it as an artistic tool like it has been used in ugh, shadow, Dionysius, black swan, etc. Also it’s extremely pathetic how people are nitpicking things from the song to hate on jimin, I just saw someone come at the choir saying it was fake and came at the horns in the song, even the musician who did the horns responded to a hateful post and blasted the person on his Instagram account, he had to correct them and many producers/musicians that are his peers even criticized the haters, pdogg ended up liking the response, it’s very embarrassing to get corrected by people who have worked with some of the biggest acts in the industry. It’s one thing to not like a song but being completely hateful/making things up is weird and not right. This is getting ridiculous. It’s okay if people don’t like set me free pt 2 but hatred is never an opinion.

This song make me realize one thing that Jiminy really has challenged himself in this video, and he was pointing to this thing from 2022 in his we verse interview, one thing I have noticed about him is that he has confided himself most of his life and has got anxiety, diet and personality issues and in that he has accepted that in my pov so it's his song not bts song. Kpoppies spamming reactors comments, good review articles with hate trying to explain why it's the worst song ever... Pdogg (long time producer of bts an dthe producer of this song) insta comment section is horrible to watch. Thanks god Jimin and others bts members have their comments closed...
It's a very experimental song so I get it's not for everyone. I get if people don't like the heavy autotune part even if it's made artistically, it won't change the sound taste. But so many kpoppies trying so hard to say it's bad produced, the whole song is trash. When the production is actually so amazing ! The whole performance breathtaking.
And if you don't like the song, you can say your opinion on it if you want... Once. But not spamming everywhere how you hate it and how you think it's bad. Like if you don't like the song, don't listen to it and move on with your life.
It's actually objectively a excellent song. And a new side of Jimin music. Talking about himself. All BTS members experimenting for their official solo music is honetly amazing. Completes passionates artists.
And btw, it's a perfect song for a pre-release single. Like you said, an anthem made to be performed. Cool song to introduce an album where we know we will find different genre in it.

Personally I’m a huge fan of the song. But I also grew up listening to Kanye West- I thought immediately of the way he used Autotune on 808s and Heartbreak when I heard this song. Plus the choir could be right out of something on MBDTF.
I think it’s a great song. Super loud and refreshing and doesn’t pull punches. That’s what I think makes it so divisive- it commits to what it’s trying to do full force. But I think that the song itself would be disingenuous to its premise if it didn’t. Like it either had to go 100% full force into the autotune the intensity the swearing the chanting- or it wouldn’t have held up with the premise of “set me free”.
And being free of the boundaries that have held jimin down.
Songs like this are one of the reasons I stay so engaged with BTS’s music. They’re always pushing forward, trying new things, reinventing themselves. Its not going to be for everyone but real art often divides people.

It’s a fact that Jimin has gotten soooo much hate over the years and to date (for no reason), including threats to his life and cyber-bullying, which caused many insecurities within him. I see this track as an “anthem” song as him saying f**k the opp (opposition) haters; not being able to express his true feelings before now, especially when receiving hate comments during his V-lives and Weverse live. He gracefully held his composure through it all. Now, he’s “not hiding anymore even if it hurts.” He “won’t stop even if they mock him.” He wants to “be free” from the hate. Many Korean and international rappers also use that term, including RM and Suga. It’s universal in the rapping and hip-hop genres. Therefore Jimin has every right to use the term in his situation as an expression on how he feels. It’s not synonymous to the African-American rappers. The term “OPPS” originated in England where it was by the fans to the opposing team at football matches.
BTS spent time in the U.S. to learn about the hip-hop culture, as they originally debuted as a hip-hop group. They were mentored by Coolio (RIP), Warren G. Tony D. Jones, Jamal Quezaire, dance crews, and voice coaches, etc. The experience was filmed as a series called “American Hustle Life” in 2014 with a total of 8 episodes. This was brilliant on Big Hit’s part in that it gave BTS the background knowledge and history on how “hip-hop” came about, so they would not take it for granted and come off fake. You can rest assure that BTS always do their research before using specific “terms in their music.” This is what puts them above the rest. So you can’t say they don’t know cultural terms that they use.

Jimin doesn't have real opps?? Yes he does though. Jimin's by far the most hated member of bts. Just by this release and debut people are lining up to sarbotage his hard work. This song is a good example, where many are only "hating it" because it's from Jimin. They just hate everything associated with him.
He's been under serious death threats for years. To the point where Jin dressed up in the same outfit as him at the airport. There's a reason why you often see the other members keeping an extra eye on him in particular, when out in public - airports especially. He's the only member who was asked to talk about threats on his life at a major press briefing years ago. And sweet Jimin said he was just afraid the fans would worry about him, because he had actually gotten used to it.
He's been fatshamed, which led to him starving himself to fit the Blood Sweat and Tears concept. He passed out at practice and walking of stage. He's still one of the thinnest members and is still being both fatshamed and called out for having eating disorders he doesn't have.
Haters are stalking him and his family members and stealing his mail and personal information and leaking it online. Something that actually got him into some real trouble, and haters still blame him for.
He does have opps in any sense of the word and I'm so happy he's finally addressing it.

I am usually not a fan of heavy autotune as it's just how my personal taste is. I have nothing against some sprinkles of it though and when it's clearly done for a specific artistic effect. Then it doesn't bother me at all. Listening to this song for the first time definitely caught me off guard simply because I was really not expecting such autotune in Jimin's solo. After the initial surprise, the next listen and just sinking into the song it did make sense and I enjoyed it. Like you said it was an artistic choice to create a certain feeling and atmosphere to the song. The autotune has it's purpose and later on we can hear his normal voice as well. And yeah this song is basically a statement. It isn't a mainstream pop song. I actually see a lot of similarities with the JHope's first release More. It was a very surprising sound for him as well and it also was making an opening statement for the whole album. And I like that. Whether you like the autotune usage here or not it is down to a personal taste and only that.

LET HIM GROW. We very well know that he has a perfect voice, so the autotune is used here for the stronger effect and in an artistic way which some people didn't understand. Autotune is not a bad thing at all when you use it like that. Also, he is showing his versatality with his voice and that's amazing. He proves (not that he needs to) that he not only can sing higher notes, but lower octaves too. His lyrics in this song speak for it itself. He's grown, your opinion doesn't matter. Raise the hands up for his past self and let him be finally free.

some people cant accept when their idol changes because they dont truly respect them as artists, they see them as their pretty dolls that should forever follow the desired look and sound. disliking a song is always fine and doesn't need an explanation but since most of the criticsm ive seen was purely directed towards the autotune... it feels pretty shallow to me. do they actually care about music? lyrics? or are they just here for the cute kpop aestethic, meaningless bops and are frustrated they didnt get it? idk, some comment sections almost had an irrational hatred towards this one song.

They always did. People just need to understand that they are growing and what they see them in a group is just a small glimpse of who they are... like, even Namjoonie said that him in BTS is just a small taste of what he is like and then in his solo he can show all of this potential and style. Not sure how K-pop fans made the leap that Jimin using autotune was to sound “better” but must’ve used it incorrectly…to sound… worse (their opinion)…? It’s not even a logical stance to think he was using it for anything other than to purposefully distort his vocals.
With that said, I absolutely love this song. Considering that it’s the last song on his album, that means this is his closing statement- he’s said all he’s wanted/needed to say in the previous songs so everybody’s who’s mad about it can stay mad. It’s a final declaration of HIS liberation, a parting shot, and I have a feeling once I hear the rest of the album it will make even more sense as the closer.
There’s only one section of the song I didn’t care for, and it was the heavily distorted vocals on the lines “Hey fool, just stay out my way. Shut up, fvck off, I’m on my way.” I didn’t like the lyrics here and I didn’t think this particular distortion fit his voice. It felt like a safe choice lyrically, and wasn’t as impactful to me vocally if it was meant as the most aggressive section of the song. Jimin is my ult, but I will always remain objective in my opinions. He otherwise ate everything else on this record tf up.
Now, I need to address every Blink, NCTzen, Exo-L, etc in the room. I have never seen so many non-Black goofy b!***es commenting on Jimin using a blaccent and AAVE in his song. As someone who’s been Black from birth and not using it as my anonymous internet personality, y’all got some bold nerve. First of all, we don’t need you to stand in for us. And two, we knew y’all weren’t Black because the accusations of a blaccent and bad AAVE were so blatantly fraudulent. A Blink talking about blaccents when Lisa Dolezals her way through all of her rap verses? Did y’all somehow manage to filter it out with Pink Venom and Money? Hm, strange. What makes so many of us mad about AAVE/AAE is poorly used AAVE/AAE (and/or relegating it “internet slang” because the erasure of a Black diasporic dialect is real). Jimin used “opps” in context and correctly while these other groups sprinkle it in their verses like it’s seasoning. Opps has more than one meaning, as AAVE/AAE is regional, and even if it had to be explained to him at least he had the decency to use it correctly and without trying to “Black it up” with a blaccent. It’s the bare minimum to use it correctly but we get slapped in the face with K-pop groups just saying anything because their writers think it’s something cool and catchy that will hit home for western listeners. I can’t reasonably expect our way of speaking to stay within our African American communities, because we move culture, but it is OUR culture. Stay out of Black folks business (and if you’re a Black fan of these other groups saying this hypocritical sh**, you’re just being a hater. Seek help).

Two of my favorite songs is Just Like You Imagine by Nine Inch Nails that has absolutely no lyrics and That That by radiohead (minimal repetitive lyrics). Both have powerful instrumentals that evoke intense emotions. Powerful instrumentals always gets me and SMF pt2 delivered in that aspect.

This is why army always says that our fandom listen to more music outside bts, unlike kpopies who complain about everything, we as armys have a lot of artist that we love who used autotune to create a different atmosfere, I compared set me free pt2 with Interlude: Shadow by suga, he used the autotune in that song to give u the feeling that he is talking with his shadow, it has a purpose, the same with jimin, the song is a hiphop track, who presents jimin as a new person, he started the song in a place similar to hell or he is still trying to transform himself (like a butterfly) is a process, he has a lot to say and reflect on the song, it's also the final song on the album, so this is his final battle to set himself free, is a battle with himself, it has a purpose and i love it. I find so funny how kpopies are complaining about a song just bc he is jimin, we know that a lot of the hate is coming from another fandoms, they are only covering their hate with the word "opinion", if you don't like the song that's fine, but why do you need to show so much hate towards a person? stop being so miserable, you look bad, nobody cares if you don't like it, the people who like the song we just wanted to enjoy it, stop with your bullshit

If white people can use woke to advance politics and this is a black slang, then an artist that gets opposition from haters, and anti-Korean entertainment industry jealousy that snubbed the group , he’s dealing with opps. Incidentally he respects the black artists who have shaped the dance band brand since the 60’s.

I personally think that Jimin knows more about hip pop culture (just like the rap line) then people give him credit for. I mean his line "Henneessy and night" was used in a lot of older rapper's songs for example: 2Pac popularized the drink because he used name it in one of his songs. So, I personally think Jimin knows more about the culture then people give him credit for, but who knows maybe I am wrong. Also, I do agree there are other writers on the song, and we don't know who exactly wrote that line.
As far as the auto-tune goes, as soon as I heard it, I am pretty certain it is supposed to be his "shadow" so to speak. BTS has talked a lot about this in their music, especially Map of The Soul 7 album which is inspired by Carl Young theory of Shadow, Ego, and Persona. The shadow is something that we have a hard time with, trails, temptations, as well as things that if people knew about you would shame you or "cancel" you so to speak, etc. So, you will hear him "battling" the shadow/auto tune with his clear voice...If you listen to Shadow by Suga (in the BTS album), you will also understand better what I meant too. Anyways I could probably keep going but I will stop ....
I personally didn't like the sound of the auto-tune at first but after listening to it a couple times and listening to it in my car. I have grown to like that part with the rest of the song. I however I loved the symbolism since the beginning.

Nobody has to like every song. I like it. It is weird that people are attacked for liking something because others don’t.
Am I the only one who remembers Jimin used to (or maybe still do) have a bit of a temper and he used to channel that though martial arts?
Do people expect the BTS members to sing Boy With Luv when they are 50 years old?
A lot of people aren’t here for the music. They are here to win and to be right at any cost. Because in real life they are ever hardly either.
Language evolves. Gay used to mean happy. Queer used to mean weird.
Tea used to mean a brew of tea leaves which started in China, normally drank hot, and in the West drank with milk or honey or lemon.
Isn’t "opposition" an English word? Australians call biscuits bikkies, umbrella brollies, barbecue barbie, television telly, breakfast brekkie.... So "opps" is short for "oppositions"?
Common word used in AAVE. Ok...?
    What opps...? Please.
Misunderstood? Nah. The hates have nothing to do with "understanding".

I have grown to love this song and video. When I first heard it I thought the use of auto tune and Jimin deliberately distorting his voice was a bit odd...but as I watched it and saw the message in the lyrics and the choreography I started to love it and I really do think Jimin was brilliant in bringing this out. I always thought Jimin and Hobi had the most wholesome sunny, angelic images in BTS. I understand why both of them had to make the artistic choice of going out of their comfort zone or against their image in their pre-release tracks. With Jimin he had to not just show a different side of himself visually but vocally as well...that’s why I thought the use of the auto-tune was brilliant...specially as it contrasts to his beautiful falsetto in singing set me free. I’m also surprised at the big deal people are making of his use of the F word and the word opps. I did notice that the phrase with the opps line was in quotation marks in the subtitles...which I found quite interesting. I think this also is in line of Jimin freeing himself from the idea of always being perfect and proper. Use of these type of hip hop slang and swearing is not unheard of in BTS. We seem to accept it easily from the rappers but not from Jimin. I think the audience just better be used to the members taking their artistic freedom seriously and to expect anything from the members solo work!

There is a reason for all those uses of autotune was very obviously intentional. In Interlude: Shadow, which you also made a video about recently to you'd know Taejiu, in the final verse, there is heavy autotune on Yoongi's voice. It is because his shadow takes over to tell Yoongi that his shadow and him are one. Jimin did the same thing. He brought HEAVY autotune in the second verse to tell jimin to " get out of way," and jimin, instead of doing that, tells his shadow to "fly away, butterfly." That's how I know jimin is having a conversation with his shadow by distorting his voice and making two different characters. Jimin, just like Yoongi, is an exceptional character writer. Yoongi does it brilliantly with Agust D and now jimin showed how he can have a conversation with his shadow and tell a story in one single song. Talented is an understatement to describe BTS.

I have never seen such odd levels of scrutiny on word usage than in kpop but always for all the ubsurd reasons. Majority of the times, folks who ain't into kpop barely ever have an issue with usage of terms or clothing until kpop fans themselves make it into a contreversy. And this isnt to disregard those who do feel offended by the usage or think it's appropriation. But the culture of nitpicking in-humanely is most seen in kpop. Its like there is never space for growth experimentation or exploration in artistic choices. Understandable if we are talking about idols. But bts members are thorough artists who have a history of learning straight from the people of the culture. Since yall ignore it so often:
    Excerpt from American hustle life.
"Coolio gets right down to business, asking BTS some basic questions about the origins and history of hip-hop. To this, clueless Taehyung, innocently says "turn up".
Coolio is not amused. He orders Taehyung to do 25 pushups, and the group’s eyes collectively widen. Shit just got real. “Do you even know what that means?” is a fair question to ask of K-Pop stars, or idols, who often talk the talk without really knowing what they’re talking about. This is not to say these stars aren’t genuine or talented artists, but the K-Pop industry is about selling a package. Idol groups are formed by finding raw talent. When forming a hip-hop group, it’s as important to know and respect hip-hop culture as it is to be able to sell it".Coolio acted like the hard-nosed drill sergeant and quizzed them on deep hip-hop history. Warren G, on the other hand, calmly taught some of the more nuanced aspects of the racism and negative stereotypes that hip-hop is wrongly defined by. Thereby BTS has learned straight from the culture and has now grown to articulate their respect for the culture more accurately than showing love towards the culture via naive mistakes.
See? They have a better background than yall think. Besides from the perspective of one who has experienced several death threats that have been discussed even at press meets, what is contradictory in his usage?

I personally love this side of Jimin. I love that he's being honest. I love that he's experimenting and exploring how his voice can be styled be it mechanically or naturally. His opening line and how it was styled using the Autotune stunned me into paying more attention, looking to see what else he was going to bring into the song. The harsh autotune renderings came in only at several points throughout the song and weren't sustained all the way. I thought it created an illusion of a conversation, like one between two personalities inside his head. To me, it was all done artistically and deliberately to convey a message in line with the intended concept. I don't quite understand why people are saying this isn't Jimin; if anyone has been paying attention to his career and personal development, you can see that this came from all the years of internalized angst and pains of wanting to express himself as a true individual but also not wanting to let other people down, especially his fans. I feel that this song is dedicated to those very people who have been always holding him to a certain persona and expectations. And after 10 years, this is probably him trying to go off the rails for a bit and have a little bit of freedom to do what HE wants for a change.

This comment right here! Jimin has been seen as this flower, sweet child for a while and while fans love it, he's also been attacked for it. From his looks to his voice, personality and so on. Being famous, you have to deal with the good and the bad but most just go too far with the death threats. Jimin, and many idols, have suppressed their feelings and emotions because they have to appear happy at all times for fans sake. No one is happy 24/7. Plus, some fans like to put artists and entertainers into a box and I see that a lot with BTS. If anything, I'm happy Jimin released this song and was bold with it. Idols are human and shouldn't have to constantly be something they are not to appease the fans.

I have the impression that those who think that only listen to kpop and are closed to all other western music. The use of autotune in this way is common and well received in Western music. Kpop stans need to learn to open their eyes and recognize that Bts never saw kpop as a genre they should conform to. It should come as no surprise that in the coming times they are making more "Western" kind of music. "Yet to come" received the same criticism, just because it was not "typical" kpop.
Like or not a piece of music, it's completely normal, everyone has their own taste. But to call "shitty" , a music just because you're not open-minded about what's going on in the world in general is to be uncultured.

I love the way he associated orchestral sounds and opera singing to a more modern and aggressive type of hip hop... Artistically speaking, the song is so beautifully crafted, IT MAKES ME FEEL SO MANY THINGS!!
I admit that i didn't expect to see people hate on it, but tbh it's only some kpop stans on twitter, otherwise the song did pretty well. But i understand how it can be divisive, that's not the kind of things we're used to hear in kpop

I agree with your analysis and I like how respectful you are of people's opinions. There are people who will always hate Jimin no matter how good his music is. That's a known fact. However, millions and millions more of us love his music, his performances, his dancing, his voice, enough to drown the voices of these haters.
A few things I've learned based on viewing so many reactions... The word "opps" seems to be controversial as to its ownership. Well, there is a rapper from the UK who said that he has only heard it originally from the British and thinks that it came from the UK ... There is another reactor who criticized Jimin because she thinks it should only be used by blacks. Is there a patent for this word that precludes others from using it? Just asking...
Another issue seems to be the distaste for using "autotune". Most of the music critics and producers I've viewed have completely understood the purpose of its use in this performance. They have explained that since Jimin's voice is already known to be very good and unique, the use of autotune was to enhance the performance. The experts seem to be of the same opinion. The funny thing is those who oppose it are not who I would call experts.
I am not an expert when it comes to rap, hip-hop or k-pop or the different genres of music. All I know is what I feel when I listen to the music. In this case, I take this music as Jimin expressing himself, becoming more aware of who he is and not allowing negativity from others affect him anymore. I can also do my own interpretation of even the different movements and formations of the dancers as well as the lyrics. Music is subjective and for me this is an amazing song and a brilliant performance. I love it.

People just aren’t used to auto tune if they don’t hear it enough, when it’s used for distortion, like when Billie eilish released NDA and it had some auto tune,a lot of her fans were upset about it and said she has good vocals and doesn’t need it… and fineas tweeted about the use of it. Personally I love when auto tune is used to distort vocals and add some edge so I loved the second verse on set me free.
