A problem with this scenario for me is that in the books, the hobbits far outnumber the men, even though the men are mostly better armed and trained fighters as well as being bigger and stronger. Perhaps a second hobbit army would have been in order?

Fun fact. The ruffians Saruman led referred to him as 'Sharkey', because the orcs he once led referred to him as 'sharku', which means 'old man' in orcish.
That might have been his name in the movie, but in the books sharku is orcish for old man. The addition of that name was probably just an Easter egg for hardcore Tolkein fans.
But that is not actual lore XD After the wars the Hobbits find the shire occupied and they have to fight to free the shire, (without Gandalf, Aragorn or the elfs and dwarfs). Don't recall that being in the movies :P
Yeah I have noticed I lot of sams on this channel or supporters I don't know what you mean by that but um you should really listen to the song it sounds so awesome mixed in with the battle and also when are you going to complete the civil war mod gettysburg scenario it's been like 3 months. Has it been to hard to upload has crashed or something?
Mainly for revenge though. He specifically says when confronted by Frodo that he wants to die in the Shire so the land will forever be tainted, and he considers it a defeat when Frodo refuses to kill him.
Gríma kills Saruman. Frodo spare Sarumans life and demands that he leave shire. when they left shire Saruman accused Gríma of murdering a man. Gríma was furious at this a drew hes knife, and sliced Sarumans throat. Saruman probably made this accusation out of pure despair since he hade no where to go after the fall of isengard.
no they don't like outsiders they live in a lively community it say in the book they have a party like every day (mostly birth days) very different you see
In the books the hobbits just appear on either side of the road and kill them all with slings and bows. Not holding off the forces of Isengard in a straight fight.
The real battle of Bywater ~ 200 Bucklanders 100 Tooks Samwise Gamgee Young Tom, Jolly and Nick Cotton Unknown number of Hobbiton residents vs 100 Ruffians --- 19 Hobbits killed, 30 wounded 70 Ruffians killed (including Gríma Wormtongue), 12 captured
Saruman started a long time before the war of the ring with infiltrating the Shire. Likely he just saw it as a way to gain more power, pipeweed and to have an extra card against Gandalf (who loves the shire). Slowly he gained more control over the Shire. Mainly by using stupid/kinda evil hobbits. When Isengard was destroyed and he succeeded to escape he made for the Shire where his men had took total control. He began to totally destroy it as his revenge on Gandalf, Frodo, Aragorn and basically everyone else. (this wasnt his first plan but only from after his defeat). Until Frodo and co. returned and started the Scouring of the Shire.
Saruman, the master of mindgames, killed "president" of Shire, but hobbits didnt know it, so he ruled Shire, but than our four heroes arrived, gathered all hobbits and beated some saruman's bandits and cutthroats. When they surrended they let Saruman escape with Wormtongue, but Saruman was very cruel to Wormtongue so he killed him and somw hobbit archers killed Wormtongue.
Another historical battle: The Battle for Erebor during the War of the Ring, a massive easterling army march upon Dale and Erebor, Dwarves and Dalians vs the Easterlings. To be noted: Dwarves had superior war machines and easterlings had massive numbers
I do find battles like this, with less diversity and weaker troops, in a way even more entertaining than larger scale battles, because it puts more emphasis on the individual tactics.
I like that battle, was intense. Not as superultra epic as another LoTR battles but that was one of the most important to the hobbits ant that matters XD. Is it possible that you would make Hyrule Total War gameplays? Have a nice day.
Please Apollo do Battle of Bywater again, but this time more balanced. For example don't give Isengard full army and elite units like Guards of Orthanc. BTW: Sorry for my English.
This battle was really awesome because it lacks awesome. I mean there are no beasts, elite warriors etc so this battle really stand out from all the other. It's like watching every night boxing matches between legends and then one day witness a bar brawl. The guys in brawl are not epic athletes who fights with tactic, but man - it's awesome anyway.
small tactical positioning blunder at the bridge. You should have had the archers up next to the bridge so they could more easily fire across the flank of the enemy rather than taking all the friendly fire by shooting over their heads. Regardless, really cool battle. I love these historical battles.
Lore so saids that Saruman disguised himself as a old crone named Sharku and with a army of bandits took the Shire ... (many months before the Hobbits returned) it took a full rebellion of Hobbits with aid of the Tooks, Illiyan and Illidan, illthiyen rangers and the heroes to drive Sharku out in the process Wormtongue killed Saruman and the Shire was saved...
I just got Medival 2 a few days ago and there doesn't seem to be many people hosting multiplayer battles in either the vanilla or the Third Age Mod. Is there a group I can join that has games often?
He wanted to heave revenge on the hobbits that destroyed his plan to take Middle earth and kill sauron. He wanted to use them as workers to make an army and to torture the kind that ended go Kingdom
Saruman was just getting revenge, I doubt there was any chance to build a force out of the Shire. Eventually, the elves or gondorians would have noticed and intervened, even if he had success at the beginning
Actually they come back to a subjucated shire where sauroman and his orcs and few uruks, have dominated the landscape, and have forced the hobbits to work, and build up his industry again, and it's in the middle of all that Pippin, Merry, Sam and Frodo comes back. And then leads them in a rebellion against Sharky/Sauroman :)
forgot to mention, it's actually foreshadowed in the movies, and in the books, when Frodo looks in Glaradials mirror, where he sees a mill, and enslaved people, which turns out to be hobbits, and the mill is described as they travel back into shire, and explores the changed site :)
Your defense across the bridge would have been way more effective, with two units in a inward V position, as it would make the enemy walk into a position were they'd be flanked trough your position.

Just Hobbits. And honestly, a Battle of Bywater scenario would sort of be the other way around, with Hobbits attacking. Basically, Saruman escaped Isengard some time between the Battle of Pelennor Fields and when the Hobbits with Gandalf and the rest of the White Council visited Isengard on their way home. He goes strait away to the Shire, and begins to fortify it (using Lotho Sackville-Baggins as his puppet leader at the beginning. That's why they find some of Lotho's pipeweed in Isengard). When the Hobbits are through Bree, it's just them and Gandalf left. Gandalf leaves to go discuss things with Tom Bombadil (a character too confusing to bring up here) and it's just the Hobbits left. When they reach the edge of the Shire, they find a wall defended by a few Hobbit shirriffs. Merry and Pippin climb the fence and scare off the defenders, and after that they gain entrance to the Shire for the others. On the way they meet another band of shirriffs, who explain the situation and "arrest" them. They don't really arrest them though, they more just kind of follow them around and are eventually left behind. Eventually they make contact with some local Hobbits, who help prepare an ambush on some of "Sharky's" (Saruman) men, not Hobbits. After a successful attack, Pippin leaves to Tookland to rally a force there, because Tookland is relatively independent to begin with and the evil men haven't been allowed in there. The movie doesn't make it clear, but Merry and Pippin are the closest thing to Hobbit royalty there is, with Merry being the heir to Buckland and Pippin being heir to Thainship of the Shire (de facto leader of the whole Shire, but in reality has no power up until this point outside of Tookland). Anyway, to sum this up because it's getting long, a larger ruffian force of men and some hobbits attacks the main rebel camp, Frodo tells everyone to avoid killing people, the ruffian force is defeated and the rebels march on Hobbiton and Bag End, the headquarters where Lotho is supposed to be. They find it empty, but Saruman steps in from behind them and starts taunting them, about how if anyone kills him the ground will forever be tainted. He tries to get them to kill him, but Frodo refuses. As Saruman admits defeat, he begins to leave. Frodo offers to Wormtongue that he can stay, because he can see Wormtongue is a slave at this point. Saruman taunts Wormtongue and tells everyone how he (probably) ate Lotho Sackville-Baggins. In a rage, Wormtongue stabs Saruman from behind, killing him. Saruman's soul leaves his body, briefly looks west towards Valinor, and a gust of wind from the west blows it away. Wormtongue is killed by hobbit bowmen because he's armed and trying to run away. The ground Saruman died on is repaired by planting the seed given to Sam in Lothlorien by Galadriel. TL:DR: There were only Hobbits attacking Saruman's ruffians and Hobbit shirriffs in the Shire.
I thought this battle sounded familiar-I had just read about it in a LoTR wiki a few days ago, what a coincidence! Yeah, it was pretty much a down-on-his-luck Saruman who just kinda...tried to take some easy hobbit land pickins. How the mighty have fallen! Not an important battle in the grand scheme of things, and I think there were only a couple hundred fighters too.

Saruman was not looking for revenge only. He went to Hobbiton to try to regain power in middle earth.
POTATOS!
Mainly for revenge though. He specifically says when confronted by Frodo that he wants to die in the Shire so the land will forever be tainted, and he considers it a defeat when Frodo refuses to kill him.
This is one of my favorite parts of the return of the king! And thank you Pixie for everythin you do. You got me interested in medieval II.
You don't know how much I love you right now. I love how you know about this battle!
Gríma then tries to flee but gets almost instantly killed by the hobbits around.
Cool, thanks for the interesting info
But saruman was still a magical/angelsomething being right? How did he lose to the hobbits?
he lost his power by that time.
Sam B oh ok thanks

The only complaint I have is that the Hobbits out numbered the Men in the books by a lot but regardless of that it was a great fight.
Really like the video and I'm really glad we saw more of the hobbits because now we aren't used to seeing them anymore.
He didn't have guards of orthanc in the books either xD way too op for little hobbits. He only had men
Guards of Orthanc are men ;) But I know what you mean, he didn't have any professional, well-trained men.

he was trying to back power slowly ya know sauroman never gives up

ahh good to hear that intro again!
How do you get the characters like Frodo and Saruman in a custom battle?
Some one should remake LOTR Conquest. Or just add it to steam.
when saroman comes nocking on your door he is not asking for sugar.
but he'd love to know if you had any middle earth left that he could borrow
So Pixelated Apollo how long do you think until they release a mod of Third age for total war Warhammer :D
Number of the people not knowing this battle is too damn high! Read the damn books guys, they are better than movies.
Saruman was just getting revenge, I doubt there was any chance to build a force out of the Shire. Eventually, the elves or gondorians would have noticed and intervened, even if he had success at the beginning
Hey, Apollo, you can tell from which parts consists your computer? (You know, the name of the processor, graphics card, etc.).
i feel it was litle bit too many attackers for this kind of enviroment ;) especially since the bandits are better than the hobbits :P
Love it Apollo amazing job
Thanks
This battle reminds me of seven samurai, peasants fighting bandits
What's it like knowing the outcome the whole time but making it seem like you don't Apollo?
Actually they come back to a subjucated shire where sauroman and his orcs and few uruks, have dominated the landscape, and have forced the hobbits to work, and build up his industry again, and it's in the middle of all that Pippin, Merry, Sam and Frodo comes back. The only reason Saruman came to hobbit was to exact revenge on the hobbits, in case you needed an answer to the question at 5:20
apollo when will the next tug of war start? ;D
Your defense across the bridge would have been way more effective, with two units in a inward V position, as it would make the enemy walk into a position were they'd be flanked trough your position.
Apollo, Saruman had taken over the Shire and the Hobbits were taking it back. Only about 17 or so Hobbits died.
this is a very interesting map with many strategic positions
i would love to see some FFA of 3v3 if possible
Dam the map looks just like the west midlands ( in England ) which is where i live :D, and i think the shires are based off the west midlands!

Awesome battle I never see hobbits
how do you get the characters in multiplayer? like sauron or gandalf
saruman* I know sauron is a unit in the game
youd think it would be simpler for archers to fire over the heads of hobbits rather than getting friendly fire
Were there any other forces at the Battle of Bywater? or was it only the Hobbits defending?
Just Hobbits. And honestly, a Battle of Bywater scenario would sort of be the other way around, with Hobbits attacking.
