Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box,
which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, thirteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor; in 2017, Jodie Whittaker became the first woman to officially play the role on television. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation,
a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally. Each actor's portrayal is unique, but all represent stages in the life of the same character, and together, they form a single lifetime with a single narrative. The time-travelling feature of the
plot means that different incarnations of the Doctor occasionally meet.
The show is a significant part of British popular culture, and elsewhere, it has gained a cult following. It has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series. Fans of the series are sometimes referred to as Whovians. The programme is listed in Guinness World Records
as the longest-running science-fiction television show in the world, as well as the "most successful" science-fiction series of all time, based on its overall broadcast ratings, DVD and book sales, and iTunes traffic.
The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was an unsuccessful attempt to revive regular production in 1996 with a backdoor pilot in the form of a television film titled Doctor Who. The programme was relaunched in 2005 and since then, has been produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff.
Doctor Who has also spawned numerous spin-offs, including comic books, films, novels, audio dramas, and the television series Torchwood (2006-2011), The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007-2011), K9 (2009-2010), and Class (2016). It has been the subject of many parodies and references in popular culture.

They looked FANTASTIC in Asylum of the Daleks, with a darker more glossy pain scheme. I wish we got more of them, shame they’ve been forgotten.

Totally agree man, I want my Paradigms back. The fact that there wasn't a proper plan in the first place is a bit concerning because Moffat tends to wing it with his story lines, and you know where that takes us, so perhaps we would've still gotten bad Dalek episodes, but still, because of the detractors we got Asylum of the Daleks, so fuck em! If they hadn't given in to the backlash we would've probably gotten a proper Dalek story in series 6, can't just be a coincidence that the series after Victory was the one to not feature the pepper pots.

Victory of the Daleks was my first ever Dalek episode of Doctor Who, so I have a soft spot for these guys. Eternal was my favourite just due to the fact of how mysterious they are, I don’t even think Eternal ever spoke either.

I really liked the design when Victory first aired (not so much now as I prefer the military look of the Time War Daleks), and the idea is really interesting.
I think we would have got bad Dalek stories from Moffat anyway, but the backlash meant we got the mix-match in Asylum and then TMA/TWF.

I heard that geen and purple paradigm casings were actually considered in the concept stage for 'Victory of the Daleks', but ultimately they both went unused. I guess that's where Lee Adams got The Geneticist idea and myself with The Virologist lol

Indeed, they had missed potential. It’s a shame they’re often dismissed as an “avoided mistake” solely because the early color scheme in victory was “too beight”, Judged a book by its cover.
But on the bright side, we’re finally getting a recreation/restoration of “Evil of the Daleks” at least.

You see man I disagree about the colours, I loved how they looked in Victory, danger is vibrant, beauty in destruction. No matter what RTD says, the Daleks have always had an air of elegance about them. And yeah, the hunchback was a real killer for them, didn't do them any favours. But, I respect your opinion man!

Something everyone forgets is the initial run of the Doctor Who experience in London, before it ahut and went to Cardiff: Bronze Daleks attecked the Paradigm piloted Dalek shipnwe were aboard, and were the "Children of Davros". I've no doubt that at one point Moffat had intended for a new Dalek civil war

Loved the design of the new Paradigm Daleks! Just what the hell was in that hump on the back of their casings? Gattling laser? Cutting tools? Energy lash? Imagine Daleks wielding close combat kinetic weapons! An electro sword or lance instead of a plunger! Also, what if the "impure" bronze Daleks hadn't just rolled over and accepted their fate? Massive Dalek civil war anyone?! There were so many possibilities and if Chibnal and his writers didn't have the imagination at the time to come up with where to take these cool new badasses, if they'd just stuck with it something would've come down the line sooner or later.
On another note, it's okay to criticise the Paradigm Daleks but if you say a single word against the new design features in thirteenth doctor storylines, you risk getting eviscerated with a rusty spoon (I hate that design, btw!).

  • @friday6448
    @friday6448 Год назад

But that last point is what gets me: the design doesn't come to mind because "The Only Good Dalek" is such a good story. Victory did them dirty by introducing them in a bad way, but I don't personally understand how we would have gotten better stories if we stuck with the Paradigm designs, since a good story doesn't depend on the design of the Daleks. Honestly, I think we just all need to accept the fact that Moffat had no plan with the Daleks and had no idea what to do with them, as evidenced by the fact that the writers admit that they don't know what the Eternal is either. Personally I think that, backlash or not, we would have gotten the exact same stories but with more Paradigm designs in them. And I say this actually quite liking them. But I think that you can't blame the backlash to the design on the state of the stories we got, the responsibility for that is entirely on Moffat

The introduction of the Paradigm Daleks was definitely botched completely. I don't think we really needed to see the Davies-era Daleks get replaced with the Paradigm Daleks; they could have introduced them after already having been created and made that more of a mystery ("Why are these new Daleks running about?" "What is happening?" - interesting question). They could have shown us the Dalek ranks without telling us (the scene where they line up and their names are all read out is really forced and cringe. The only one we really needed to know the name of would be the Eternal because its function isn't obvious). So instead of telling us that red Daleks are "drones", show Red Daleks being the new standard Dalek colour (the fact there's only one red Dalek in Victory of the Daleks and it's shown on an equal footing to the others is extremely jarring... it's like having a peasant standing equal to a king). Instead of telling us blue Daleks are Strategists, show us a blue Dalek advising the Supreme Dalek about strategy, or show them commanding squads of red Daleks on the ground (though strategists generally would avoid combat - you don't want your strategists to die). Show orange Daleks performing horrific experiments, and the white Dalek as the overall commander that the others refer to as the Supreme in deference (again, the "Eternal" Dalek is unclear... honestly, I'd have either cut the Eternal entirely or just made yellow Daleks a different rank/function like an officer to command smaller Dalek squads on the ground - creates a coherent chain of command). Then later, explain to the audience how the Paradigm Daleks came to be (explanation would need to change a bit) and how the impure bronze Daleks that brought them into existence were destroyed. Also, the darker colour schemes from Asylum of the Daleks would be better and would have helped these Daleks be taken seriously. Bearing in mind, the Paradigm Daleks accomplished absolutely nothing in their debut story... all they did was destroy three Daleks that accepted it. A proper banger of an introduction story that showed the Paradigm Daleks as a force to be reckoned with would have definitely had people be more accepting.
I'm editing this because I thought more about it and can add that really what we needed was a story that properly re-introduced the Daleks like what "Dalek" did back in 2005. I'd have gone for a more "Resurrection of the Daleks" style of story where the Daleks are shown doing what they do best: killing. The higher the on-screen body count, the better. To contrast the more playful, whimsical and youthful Eleventh Doctor, introducing these new Daleks at their darkest and most deadly would have been a very strong opening for them, especially for really showing Amy Pond just how bad things could truly get and to get an even deeper insight into The Doctor's character through the Daleks. I'd have set it in the future with the Daleks fighting a race with superior weaponry that could perhaps have destroyed the Daleks of the Time War era but are shown having little effect against the Paradigm Daleks (but still able to destroy a Dalek). Also, the organisation of the Daleks would have to be highlighted in the story, with Daleks showing really effective co-ordination in battle - basically highlighting the strength of the Paradigm and their core concept.

The Paradigm Daleks were an acquired taste for me. At first, I really didn't like their design, it changed too much of the Dalek's silhouette, and I got Power Rangers vibes from them. But as we've seen in Asylumn of the Daleks, they did attempt to change the Paradigm's design a little, like shorting the hump and darkening the colors. Upon researching the Paradigm (Such as how they could switch their weapons and manipulator arms) and looking at fan creations of different Dalek variants in the Paradigm's design(I recommend looking up the RUclipsr Chucky, they've made cool looking Paradigm variants), I've started warming up to them. I'm kind of getting tired of always seeing the Bronze Daleks. Not that their design is bad, it's just getting bland. It seems like the only (TV) Daleks we've seen with distinctive designs are the Supreme, Emperor Guard, Ironside, Recon Daleks, and Rusty. I'm not saying that the Daleks should all be rainbow colored or change the design completely, but at the very least, make specialized Daleks look just a little different than standard Daleks instead of just giving a Bronze Dalek different guns and appendages and calling it a different variant.
    But that's just my opinion.
