Andrea's voice is at its best here, so pure and expressive, but let's not forget the others, the harmony is incredible, and how about those low basso lines? So resonant and warm. A lovely rich base for Andrea's voice to take off from and sour to the heavens.

I think its arrogent to say there is something wrong with those who gave this a thumbs down, although I wouldn't personally do so (but then, I generally never give a thumbs down, even if I hate something. I rarely even give a thumbs up as all this rating thing has changed our sensibilities for creating or listening, IMHO).
I'm finding that this group's approach to ensemble singing gets tired as it all sounds the same, with little changes in timbre, tone or dynamics. Pop songs and choral classics all sound the same. I find I start getting bored after a while. But then, I'm 66 and I guess tastes have changed in the digital age.
That said, I am in deeply in love with Andrea Haines...

Voces 8 has a gorgeous collective tone, wonderful breath control, phrasing and dynamics. I love this group for their purity of sound, and Andrea Haines' voice is uniquely stunning and ethereal. I usually find that sopranos that sing without vibrato, in trying to sound like a boy treble, sound pinched, and lose the warmth, expressiveness and roundness of the tone. But not Andrea. Her voice in Voces 8 is one I return to time and time again for its captivating beauty, easy gentleness, and thrilling heavenly overtones. Just wonderful!

I am grateful for this and think about it so often.
I grew up with a lovely family as neighbours, they could not hear. Often I wondered what joy they are missing, as music has been my absolute lifeline and pass time. Eventually, I joined the neighbour kids in their Helen Keller school and learned more about their world. They are not robbed of joy. One can’t miss out on something they have never experienced.
How often do we feel sad because we can’t fly, although birds can? Or sorrow because we can’t swim the depths of the seas like fish can?
Most often, we don’t. We seek out the joys we know.
I think I had a lot of shame about being a hearing person for many years.
      But it’s a blessing I count daily.

I have the same problem! The following is my favorite performance of the Fauré Requiem, with a soprano with every so slightly more vibrato, but pure, young, feminine, and with more of a sense of reverence and longing. It is the second version of the Requiem, the best version in my opinion, with chamber orchestra and choir:

It is more about the reverberation quality of the old church venues. Those large open spaces with sound reflective surfaces of stone, tile and hardwood pews make singing there a real joy. Modern auditoriums do this music no justice.

@@multitrackjake8698 I very much doubt they lip sync - budgets probably wouldn't stretch to separate sessions. Plus these guys are too good to need to do that, and any imbalances can be fixed in the mix. I sung in a leading UK Cathedral choir for years, and have done loads of sessions both as a musician and composer, and lip syncing, auto-tuning, etc is usually reseerved either for less capable pop singers, or for a specific effect on vocals, or else because the promo video is created after the song has been mixed. In this case, it looks as though they've given care and thought to where they're filming - both for the acoustics and the aesthetics of the building, and then shot it live.

    • @multitrackjake8698
      @multitrackjake8698 4 года назад +3

@@MOUTHWATERINGVEGANTV I guarantee you they are not singing this live for the recording. This is a professional quality recording and there is no visible audio recording equipment, you need microphones placed both at a distance and very close to singers to produce a recording of this quality. This video provides evidence of how Voces8 record a CD: ruclips.net/video/tErRuCL8ZHg/видео.html . Furthermore there are moments when the soloist's vowels seemingly go on after closing her lips, eg shortly after 01:46. Regarding your mention of budget: it's actually irrelevant for voces8 because the singers and core staff are all salaried full-time employees. The only additional expense would be hiring a venue twice which wouldn't be a problem.

Now VOCES8 knows what an old school, retired, Anglican, US, Navy and Marine Corps Chaplain listens to all day while reading classical theology. Now, if the public pulpits--at the Cathedrals too--would work as hard in Biblical exegesis, Hebrew, Greek, Latin, systematic theology and church history as VOCES8 musical scholars do at their musical craft. You folks are benchmarks of high-end quality. We need theologians in the pulpit with musicians like this for our anthems and more. Superb work and regards from eastern North Carolina (named Carolina after those misfits of King Charles 1 and II, but I digress). All day long, VOCES8 is played here. If a millionaire, would send you some money, but am quietly retired. Conserve and preserve the classics. The theological Vandals and Visigoths are at the gates. Regards.

Faure's requiem mass is one of the most pleasurable pieces to PERFORM/LISTEN to ever written. Full orchestra, full choir and a few exquisite solos. Pie Jesu being one.

Absolutely brilliant! An outstanding performance. The crystalline clarity of the lead voice resembles that of a boy soprano, added the perfection and subtle expressive nuances of a mature and skilled artist.
I also want to give honour to the choral performance - and to the arrangement. Now, rewriting the original organ comp into an a choral piece isn't a very hard exercise. Indeed, looking at the score one may easily think that Faure might have written this for choir originally, and then changed his mind. But there are some very clever details in this arrangement - probably written with this eminent ensemble in mind. Careful balancing of individual voices gives a harmonic sound picture that could never have been produced from an organ.

Beauty in Fauré takes the form of a spacious harmonic depth, always dry, composed, without any frills.

This contemporary arrangement still has a 'Faure' flavor about it. It's brilliant, especially because it is performed by VOCES8. Sing this at my funeral, please!

Typically I prefer the "Pie Jesu" sung by a bay soprano, but the soprano singing here is perfection, wrapped in the pure tone of innocence. Many Thanks!
