Season 2 was actually announced by Netflix a few days ago. I really like Dark too, so astonishing that German TV can do something like this (I'm German and most of German productions are meh)
i'm so happy german tv is doing something awesome! As a french , i hope my country can do something great but as a european , i'm happy we can watch something awesome who are not american or japanese. The german cachet in Dark is great and refreshing : )

I completely agree. This is by far the best show I have seen this year and the best tv in many years. Everything in this show works, the script, the acting, the visuals, the score. Rarely has a tv show affected me so much that it keeps me thinking and philosophizing about life, much in the same way as the first Matrix movie. It just won't let me go. Incidentally the name of the town is Winden. Being a German speaker (majored in German in England!), this name is so very apt! Check the various meanings of "winden" on this online dictionary: dict.leo.org/german-english/winden
Twist and meander are just some of the many meanings of "winden". I just love this show, it pulls all the right strings with me. Anything that makes you think, and not just be entertained, is exceptionally rare these days.

Thanks for the hint that Winden has so many different meanings in German. Even as a German I wasn´t aware of it. But that´s probably the best thing about the show - there are so many small hints that you will only understand when you´re really thinking about it! Love it!

two of my favorite chracters were actually Regina and Aleksander Tiedemann. I think their story is kind of nice, and they're the only happyish couple in Winden. Don't really get what made Regina so cold though, i guess all the bullying just made her very bitter? And Aleksander's story is also very mysterious.
Well, I guess we know what's next on my list now.

I watched DARK in the first days it came out and I love this show soo much. I'm proud that our first Netflix series is so good and I also think it's better to watch it in german because it's definitley more authentic (I usually watch English movies and series in english too:-)) I exspecially loved the sound, camera, acting and the complex story and since this show, I love to think about the possibility of Time-traveling and there's a very good interview with the german actors about it.(sorry if my English is bad)

It blew me away, expecially for a german television show. They're usually kinda doll or cast most of the actors with heavy theater background which can't translate well the source material if it's not that grounded. I'm german and I love the acting in this show. I've watched X files and Twin Peaks back in the day I'm curious whats next in season 2

Really enjoyed this - an ambitious first turn for Netflix in another language and it absolutely nails it.

I was hooked within the first 15 minutes!!! The atmosphere and tone are creepy and beautiful at the same time!!! I limited myself to one episode per night so I could recover for the next one!!!
It’s such an amazing show, the intertwined plots between time periods really serves to entice and intrigue the audience whilst staying true to each era in the portrayal of its characters and setting! Love Dark, if you haven’t already, WATCH IT!

Coming here a couple of weeks after finishing the 3rd cycle (season). My all time favourite tv show ranking is: 1) Twin Peaks (original, haven't finished the sequel), 2) Band of Brothers, 3) Dark. I am also here to say that understanding everything is not necessary to enjoy it. I still have a lot of things I couldn't put together in "Dark", but I absolutely love it anyway. Talk about a unique and singular vision.

This show was damn good. Was not expecting the caliber of filmmaking I saw in this show. I watched it dubbed. At first it bothered me but after seeing what was happening in the show I forgot it was dubbed haha. The mystery and twists were a mile a minute. Crazy.
One thing I learned was that german dont pop up the hoodie(while its raining) , even when they are wearing a raincoat with hoodie 🤔🤔

i am german and i never used a umbralla or pop up my hoodie in my life while it was raining...

Another german here, I also recognized people not giving a shit about the rain.. Not only unused hoodies, but also running away from your expensive car with an open door 🙈 my thought was, that winden might be located in the upper half of germany (rather flat land, sandy grounds, lots of rain) im coming from the south of germany and i would use the fuck oft of my raincoat with this amount of rain !!

Great review! Totally agree about the aesthetic and acting. I watched it with the English dubbing, but I'm going to re-watch the subtitled version. (There is one more similarity between Stranger Things and Dark, besides the fact that a kid goes missing, though: the 80s.) But, like seriously. This was my favorite show of 2017! SO GOOD. :)
The English dubbing is sadly not as spot on emotionally as the original German. Key scenes are better felt with the real voices of the actors.
Yeah I could feel a disconnect for sure! It seemed to get better in the last few episodes, but maybe I was just blocking it out by that point, haha! Regardless, excited to re-watch!

Certainly a mind-bending show! Started one weekend...finished the season the same weekend. There's a Dark wikia to try to put all the shows information in one place...certainly not an easy feat :D
if you like to put dark into a genre i guess german crime stories come very close, except for the amazing supernatural twist it has. oh and the physics. I don't want to imagine how difficult it is to understand everything by only being able to read the subtitles when t's already hard to understand it in german xd. but the complexity is what makes it soo suspenseful. can't wait for season 2
Brilliant show, plot, acting, atmosphere and psychology all impeccable! Art direction and music mesmerizing...tragic, moody and thoughtful study of human frailty, and our relationship to the past. The only problem is it spoils you for every other Netflix show...hard to get into anything else after this ...I watched it twice over and would see it again!
All actors are incredible in this show, very believable.
Another reason: All the clever little details. The recurrence of the number 33, for example, or the snack bar "Raider" that later became Twix. Older viewers from German speaking countries will remember the slogan "Raider heißt jetzt Twix - sonst ändert sich nix" - "Raider is now Twix - nothing else changes". Oh, and the soundtrack is amazing too.
I know I'm late to the game...but I'm into Season One...can't wait for Season 2!
English dubbing is not terrible, the problem is that people who speaks english do not use to watch things that is not in english, then when they watch something in other language it sounds weird for them to watch dubbed

I actually think it is nothing like Stranger Things there should not even be a comparison. This was something I did not bring up in my recent review I just did but I definitely see why people want to compare the two

Not rly, even the spanish and frances dubs are better.. German dubs are also better.. This english dub in this is just "uncaring". They dont even try to be lipsync. Well at least the last episodes get better with the english dub. But the first 3-4 Episodes are loveless dubbed. Lieblos dahin geklatscht wie man sagen würde... ;-)
Some of the Netflix shows in particular are near unwatchable in the German dub. And I don't mean "cringey", I mean "Entire plot points are lost due to incompetent and sometimes hilarious mistranslations".
Yep thats true for some shows. No doubt on this. But "overall" german dubs are made pretty good. Just as spanish ones or frances. With "uncaring" in this case i mean they show nearly no emotions on the dub. i have seen better english dubs then this for sure. And i dont want to condemn dubs in general. If they are made good im okay with it (even i prefer the original) But bad dubs are just.... bad. Worst are polish dubs. they have like one female and one male voice for all! :-)

i even came across russian "dubs" where one guy spoke everything.. every singe role... and it wasnt even "real" dubbing, but more like simply talking over the original voices while reading everything from a piece of paper without any emotions or even the slightes effort to fit in any way.. just hilarious

It's officially over, and it's officially amazing.
Just finished watching it..i was avoiding it tbh...but it was so good!
It blows my mind that barely anyone has watched this its incredible its been out since December the 1st......its pronounced Win-den like winning win not vine :P . I've now watched this 3 times in a row my mind is melting because NOBODY I know has watched it yet and I'm crying inside trying to talk to people about it.
Also Dark is totally original unlike ST which is just 80's Pastiche.
Its been described by its creators as a mashup of Drama, Mystery, Thriller and Sci Fi.
i finished the show in 2days. the ending left me flabbergasted at how there is no news of season 2 plans yet. Barely anyone has watched and that is somewhat sad. i just think it is inherent with this type of show and how complex it can get. it's also a very brooding/serious sci-fi thriller, which might put people off who want something like the hopeful camaraderie and endless homages of stranger things. Then again True Detective season 1 was really popular and that's about as grim as you can get so i don't really know.
I genuinely hope that it gets a season 2 I enjoyed this so much I just can't stop telling people to watch it, if I don't tell people they just look at the trailer and assume its German stranger things (like 9 out of 10 reviews I watched of the trailer made that assumption) which is so so sad :(

Depending on how good your german is you can still watch it in german. Your english is amazing so that is also a good option. As an english speaker i just preferred watching it in german with English subtitles. So if you can read english as well as you can write it then go with that option :)

It's so funny hearing you recommending to watch it with subtitles. My husband and I speak German and to us the English dub is 100% better. We would never watch it in German. German dubbed versions of English movies are great, but the acting qualities of German TV show or movie actors remind us more of exaggerated theater plays.

Other similarities between Dark and Stranger Things, besides the kid going missing, is the setting of a small town with a power plant, parts of Dark are in the 80's while stranger things takes place in the 80's, and the general sci-fi thriller aspect to it.

i found the hardest part was remembering everyones name and whose who, especially since there German names. after that learning how they all connect is the fun part.
Dark is a really, great show. I just hope they come back with another season! So many good shows that said there would be second seasons, but then just disappear! Like: The OA, The Man in the High Castle, etc.
Season 2 has been confirmed! as for The OA, i think it got canceled and The Man in the High Castle should be back with season 3 this year!

Between ST and Dark, one show is about a boy pulled through a portal to another world completely unlike the one he just left, close to a secret gov’t facility that is thought to be involved, where a dead boy’s body is found and thought to be the missing boy until the parent rejects it as their child and the search continues until the boy is discovered and returned to his normal world but still feels out of place.

In this case you can, because the phonemes in the word exist in English too, plus she watched the show with subtitles, so she heard the name of the town said MANY TIMES.
W being V in German is something that English speaking people simply fail to follow. Another similar case is the name Wolfgang, oh how I shake my head when I hear it like wolf- gang, a gang of wolf, really?? VvvvvvvolfGang... please...

This show is super freaking good
I don’t know why people compare this to Stranger Things! The similarities really DO end at “kid goes missing near government facility”. That’s it, though, because the characters are much better fleshed out and the story better written (and, without spoiling anything, there is an element of time travel that actually makes sense)! I have watched all of Season 1, and I’m glad they’re doing a Season 2; I can’t wait! It certainly lives up to its name though; there is a noticeable lack of the charm and sympathetic characters that made Stranger Things so delightful. Still, you gotta love this show just for its haunting opening titles!
I recommended it to my friend and he just ignored it. I mean i think it's better than ST. I'm so mad!
There are a lot of superficial similarities to ST : kids gone missing into another realm, the 80s, electrical disturbances, a field of dead pumpkins/sheep, a threshold into another dimension, a science-y governmental facility shrouded in secrecy, children used as guinea pigs for experimentation....but it takes a sharp turn at Existential Street. I loved it.

I don't know if i can deal with the English voice over actors. If it's a Netflix original, then why didn't they just do it like Narcos. Keep German audio and use subtitles? The voice over actors voice acting doesn't match up to the emotional acting of the on screen actors. Sad!
You can watch it in German with English subtitles, just have to change the audio/subtitle settings :)
The show was amazing! Binge watched it in one day. The only problem for me is that it is going to have season two. I think Dark should have been a one season series.
