Jess Phillips: 'I thought I'd met posh people before I came here'

  • The Birmingham Yardley trended on Twitter after she delivered the barn-storming speech, with a comedy edge, to politicians in the Commons. Attacking proposals to ensure EU workers must earn over £30,000 before they can be called 'skilled', the 37-year-old poured scorn on the 'poshness' in politics. @Josh ua I think you'll find she wasn't laughing at the idea of a day focusing on testicular cancer but at the quite frankly laughable notion that men in Westminster need a special day to voice anything! Parliament is patriarchal, reflecting the same in society! And it's so interesting that the only negative comments I have read about Jess Phillips come from men!! Have you ANY idea how women are persecuted in this so called modern society of ours?? I doubt it! She is representing her constituents in a forthright way, and maybe we need more of that in Parliament instead of old men creating a society for the rich and well healed??

      There are three kinds of knowledge, know how(skills that need years to learn), know that(stuff you can learn from books or google), and know who(contacts, old school tie etc).
      In UK and US and pretty much all "capitalist" economies, all the money is to be made from "know who". There is no connection between skill, intelligence or hard work and wealth. It is a total scam.

    She is right that there are plenty of people who earn a lot who are not qualified to do so, I also know of one female MP who earns a lot and has done everything she can to block debates on men's issues and as far as I am concerned that disqualifies her from being an MP - her name? Only 1 in 20 people in prison are women. Gender isn't a social construct, it's biological. The truth is, and people will say I'm being sexist but women just aren't interested in doing armed robberies. I like Jess Phillips and I think she is funny but she needs to get her head round the idea that men and women are different and when given equal opportunities, will make different choices and will have different outcomes.

    • @elizabethking7198
      @elizabethking7198 Год назад

      @@54356776 I think she's fantastic and strong and very wise. I think the vast majority of people only get angry when people publically talk about men's issues only when they are trying to shut up women talking about sexism (which is very real). Both men and women have serious struggles as a result of their gender, but still it has to be said that this doesn't mean that it is equatable historically or currently.
      I personally believe men's issues are largely a result of patriarchy as well, so supporting feminism would also be supporting the health, happiness and freedom of men. It's just that women have a lot less power and are kept down more for being women and expected to have less ambition and achieve less, then men are ever kept down specifically for being men.
      Men are brought up to feel like they need to succeed in a very specific way, which also depends on keeping women down and leaving them feeling second to men. And yes it ultimately causes misery for everyone, just men overall have the economic benefit.

    Forget the stupid nonsense and the expensive catastrophe of leaving the European Union. It's time the UK faced reality and addressed the shocking levels of inequality in our country. Does this government care about that? No, it doesn't. Only about leaving the EU; something which is going to make everyone poorer - except the super-rich, of course.

      What nonsense. As far as i am aware UK citizens enjoy equal opportunities. Attending a university and being awarded a degree is within reach to those who commit to improving their lot by their own efforts rather than giving up the race because 'I'm not clever enough' or 'I don't want the responsibility'. Most of those scratching for a living do so because they haven't taken the opportunities before them and/or made poor lifestyle decisions. Whining about Life's inequalities will not put bread on the table.

Anyway she goes on and on about her working class roots and convinces herself when Labour get into power poverty will end no more food banks cheap housing for all N.H. without the usual problems, trains on time and cheap, and what is there slogan.."For the many not the few" she is now one of the few and unless she is less aware than the village idiot she must know at best her party may give an extra £1 a week in the pockets of the poor [and thats being very generous] so £4 a week will be taken back with the increase in council tax [I live under the higher than London rates with a Labour council] Rhetoric platitude and lies do not make an honest politician.I hope she and others have given back the 10% rise M.P.s recieved a few years ago when lower paid were given %1, and a number were so ashamed they made such an offer?...NO well thats a surprise. Democracy is in greater danger now than ever before in peace time and if one cares to look around the world there is a record amount of PMs and Presidents Actually under threat of prosecution for corruption and some people wonder why people are voting for extreme leaders in Europe America and other countries.Its not that they love the extreme policies so much but it is the only way to get back at the elitist corrupt systems.
