Heartbreak on day 2 of the EOBC

- After a tough first day, with many saying they wouldn't even be attempting the Sunday, I had a choice to make. Head North and try to find a beach with enough shelter to avoid the swells, which were forecast to be bigger than the Saturday, or make the pilgrimage to Spurn Point.
As usual my tackle for the session was:
Akios Fury FX420 continental rod
Penn Spinfisher 7500lc
80lb Berkley Whiplash braid straight through
Pulley Pennel rigs with 4/0 bottom hook and 3/0 circle hooks up top
Take care and tight lines!
These videos are brilliant... Only been sea fishing for 3 years but learning so much from these videos 🙏👌🏼🎣
Thanks Lee, really glad to hear it pal!
Really enjoyed this one Alex sods law when fishing a comp. Nice cod and bass. Looked like a nice session. Thanks for sharing.
It was one of the risks I knew I was taking with that massive walk
Typical! Timing is the essence. Well done on catching a couple of beautiful fish anyway! 👏👏👏
Cheers John 👍🏼
Cracking video mate and a great idea on setting a match up lovely cod as well
Thanks Mark, keep your eyes peeled, I'll get something set up 👍🏼
@@theawfulangler 👍
Love your dry sense of humour...the weigh in times are pretty poor at the EOBC and need looking at...well done on getting a couple of nice fish.
Cheers Kev 👍🏼
They are mate, but I guess if they opened them up, it would only encourage more down on to the point.
First time watched the channel of your two eobc days, enjoyed them both thankyou and l sympathise with your pain 😎👍🏻
Thanks David, glad you enjoyed the videos 👍🏼
Alex, awesome video buddy.
I'm one of the lucky people, absolutely fine with my own company.
My mental health issues start when I turn up on the East Coast, not been kind as of late.
Joking aside, it's always great to get out of the house and get the line wet.
On the other point, if you take the time to organise a competition ABSOLUTELY COUNT ME IN!
Cheers buddy.
Thanks Chris!
Haha its been hit and miss for me, that's for sure. Summers just around the corner, though, and I'm looking forward to what it has in store.
Keep your eyes on the community posts mate I'm going to get something organised
@@theawfulangler always a pleasure buddy.
The fishing all around seems to be wrong at the minute, cod are really limited!
Watching RUclips fishermen and, where the hell are all of the bass coming from????
Tooo early, really way early!
Targeting a specific species at the minute just looks impossible?
two great fish....On a positive side, you're doing something right. That was good fishing to catch two really good fish and you made the right decision on braid and to move. I think you can take a massive amount of positives from that session. 👍👍👍👍
I agree Sean, looking back it was a great session 👍🏼
Good video mate enjoyed the videos can’t win em all that’s what I tell myself ! it’s the participation, and you really are 1 cast away from a win one day ! Keep up the videos
That's it mate, maybe should have had that one cast 15mins earlier
Brilliant video m8 . Iff you ever get over to brunswick on the mersey . Mite see you there . Tight lines buddy . Hope ya well and dogs . Keep post coming m8 good stuff . BUCKY
Cheers Ian! Brunswick is a potential mate. Like I say rays are the next target and I've heard good things about that spot. Are there any low water marks on the pool side of the water?
@The Awful Angler not really . . Apart from. Sea forth and Crosby. Seaforth best bet fish low after big tide next to rocks and old radar station . Be careful .. . Brunswick shit hot for rays . Some monsters at times
Good video 👏 Nice couple of fish and the flattie 'Blank' saver 😂
Looks a lovely bit of ground to fish. Should have gone there rather than Bridlington the other week, although sod walking over an hour to do so.🤯
Merchandise looks good, but I don't do Beanies (They just ride up on me) and the hoodie look good, but am currently looking for ones that have a high front neck, fishing smock style.
£5 entry on the match looks good value. Plenty of notice and decent tides and I'm up for travelling.🎣🎣🎣
You can fish just off the end of the road to be honest mate that's a good southern venue.
Once I sort logistics out I'm hoping I can expand the options 👍🏼
All credit to you and a couple of cracking fish!..👍
Cheers mate 👍🏼
Loved the vid, you have motivated me to get my arse in gear and get up the loft to see what kit I have left that has not turned into dust and get out there again .
No excuses now that my kids have grown up and your channel has made me realise how much I miss sea fishing !
Interested in a hoodie and not bothered about having to wait
Best wishes for your family and looking forward to the next vidio
That's great to hear Ian. So where are you heading out to first then?
@@theawfulangler I live in Inverness so have a few options, my daughter lives just south of Ullapool so looking forward to some mackerel in the summer. About an hour north of me is Tarbert Ness, bit of a challenging rock mark (will loose tackle) but in years past had good cod, pollock big wrass, strangely fishes best on the down tide !...if you are ever in the area just let me know and can give you more details... I dont really post often and you are the first channel guy to reply :0) so thanks for that and Tight Lines
Oh you're definitely in the right part of the world up there mate. I can't wait to make the 10hr pilgrimage again at some point this summer 🤪
@@theawfulangler Nice one...take mige cream, the little buggers can drive you mad😁.... feel free to give me a shout anytime and can let you know of some other marks up here that may interest you...Rosie my other half is happy am taking up fishing again but she has no idea of the impact its gona have on the bank balance as have only told her I need a couple of "bits and pieces" to get back up and running....little does she know 🤣. Anyway, I ramble, hope things improving with the little one and maybe speak again sometime...cheers
Oh i know that much. It's the only place I'd rather fish when it's windy 😅
Just tell her it's cheaper and healthier than becoming an alcoholic 👍🏼
What a funny video, had me chuckling especially when you needed to go for a Jimmy 😂.
I'd be up for a fishing comp 👍
Fair play on that cod and fab Bass.
Cheers Mel!
Keep your eyes on the community posts mate I'm definitely going to get something organised 👍🏼
Them's the breaks. It is testing [I match fished in the past] nice couple of fish in the end. Hope wee man is ok soon. No preference about clothing LIKE the logo.
Cheers pal, yeah it's tough, but I always say, you're only one cast away from a decent fish
Firstly hope young Jacks doing ok ... What an awesome effort mate shame you couldn’t have made the way in lovely Codling and Bass. Thanks mate take care 👍🎣🎣
Cheers Stephen! We're spending the day chilling, trying to shake the worst of this bug!
Yeah it was a cracking session when you disregard the comp.
Great video and two beautiful fish. Not always about catching really just the opportunity to recharge our batteries and some one's own time. Amazing how a few hours doing something we enjoy can make those silly things in life that get on top of us can disappear. Already looking forward to seeing more. Stay safe and regards to the family
That's it Bob! Bit of fresh air and time away from the daily dramas and everything seems right again in the world
Well done for not rushing off, it'd have made you feel worse sat driving, as the weigh in time passed AND you wouldn't have caught the splendid bass. Good for you talking about mental health. I've suffered, thanks to Combat Stress, I'm now well on the way back to my old self. Cycling and running helped me, but the main thing is, do something, get help and get outdoors. Tight lines, thanks for your videos.
Cheers Graeme! I definitely made the right call.
You're right, I definitely think exercise/fresh air is far better than any medication the docs cab prescribe. But again that's just going on my own experiences, everyone is different 🤙🏽
Nice one, lovely codling and always fantastic video, hope you all feel better soon 👍
Cheers Daz 👍🏼
I hope Jack's better now mate. 🙏Don't worry about videos, family always comes first.👪❤️
Well done you on two cracking fish. 🎣🎣Shame they turned up late, but would you have rather got back on time after blanking.🥺
A great video. Loving the mental health awareness too.👏👏
Thanks for your time and effort, appreciated.🧑🎓
Take care and stay safe.😷🙊
Thanks as always for the kind words Ian!
We're doing OK thanks, we've done well to avoid bugs this winter so it was always going to catch us at some point. It's just a different challenge when the baby gets man flu 😅
As you say at the start, it's about getting out there and having some quality time for yourself, I went to Hornsea for a first go at beach casting last Saturday, two hours each way by bus from York, totally blanked but had a great few hours, remember if you had gone for the weigh in that bass would never have seen the light of day,
Cheers Neil! That's some great commitment mate. From York I'd take a look at the trains, pack light, and those 2 hours travel could see you all over
@@theawfulangler live in Pocklington so train travel would take a little longer, plus single bus fares are only £2 at the moment, typical tight Yorkshire man 🤣, off to Filey for Easter weekend so will let you know how I get on , need to brush up on the bait presentation
Fair enough mate I don't think they will let you on the station platform for £2 these days. Filey is a cracking spot mate. You'll do as well with the lured there as you will with bait 👍🏼
Brilliant video mate great fish shame on the time but it’s still great to catch well done were in Scotland are you thinking of going mate 👍🏴
Thanks mate. West coast mate, Oban to Skye type of area.
Well done to you, looked like a hard slog that walk but you caught different tides different stories, fished mersey last tues and blanked 4 missed bites but never never puts me off, again well done
Only ever one cast away from a decent fish pal. It would be good if they considered the tides when choosing the fishing times, but I guess they just shoot for a weekend and hope for the best.
Nice cod great viewing as always love to family
Cheers Steve hope you're all good 👍🏼
Well done lad 👍 Enjoyed that although it was a shame you didn't have time to get to the weigh in ... Oh well good sport keep up the good work and keep sane Tight Lines 🎣👀...
Cheers Pat! I know would have been the icing on the cake that 👍🏼
What a bummer on the fish so near the cut off time. But well done on your effort. I went north and blanked. Just wasn't conditions for them rays.
Cheers mate, yeah I think I made the right choice in the end. Passed the breakers it was lovely and flat calm, but the swells just killed any chance of the rays I'm afraid.
Nice vid. Great release good to see.
Thanks mate, too early in the season to be keeping bass in my eyes. I bet now she's been feeding up, that 3lb fish is over 5lb.
I look forward to your videos all depending on the venue i (due to a leg injury)would fish a comp
Cheers Jeremy! I'll bear that in mind mate, I'm definitely going to try and organise something 👍🏼
Absolutely gutted for you mate, well done on the fish, well deserved for the great effort 👍
Cheers Paul, yeah on any other day, that was a cracking session.
Wow that's a different world to the one most of us had was told spern was a different world but that's incredible. Well done for three fish. Next year take a push bike
Yeah, the breakers were huge as I was walking back, so I was chuffed with my decision. Its nicely sheltered and the tidal rip calms things down well too.
I ended up fishing Bridlington both days chasing rays.
I always set myself a time to be off shore and packed up.
I don't want to suffer the heartache of catching a winning fish and not making the weight in.
Nice fishing.
I'd said all along, I need to be off the beach by 2.15. Given the walk, it's a spot I know I'm not going to fish regularly, so thought I may as well stay and I'm still glad I did. Just would have been nice for them to show up an hour earlier 😅
It was a tough weekend.
I'll be back down next year, which will be my 4th visit down.
TBH mate, sod the competition, I'd have taken them fish any day of the week! You made the right decision staying!
Definitely Leon! It was a cracking session, now it's stopped stinging at least haha
Great video and not awful at all, compete against yourself, you have nothing to prove. Hope your son is on the mend soon, regards Keith (Ireland)
Cheers Keith, we're getting there no thanks mate, just in time for the next bug to come around haha
Fishing is a huge part of my therapy. I'm on a ton of medication and I have to keep seeing various mental health professionals, but going out on the water is 20x more effective than both of those put together.
Cheers from the US.
Fishing saved my life, and continues to keep me above ground when things get bad. At one time I was on 3 meds per day, and I have to say that getting off them, and on the water, was the best thing I’ve done. There’s still ups and downs, but nothing like the swings from the meds. I hope you can begin a life with less of the one, and more of the other.
In a side note, I find that the focus required, the preparation, and sense of accomplishment when fish are caught, all connect to our primal needs, from which we’ve been largely separated.
I believe that many of our illnesses are connected to an absence of our deeply ingrained
need for exactly this kind of activity.
Thankfully I work for myself, and have found that organizing my life around things like tides, weather, and moon cycles, (as our ancestors had done) over calendars and clocks, has brought a benefit that I never could have imagined.
The past is the future, my friend.
May you be successful in all you do.
Joe
@@WD-41469 When Im out I meet quite a few people, and we will often spend up to an hour just chatting. I know that annoys others, but Im aware that you dont just stop and talk to a stranger for that length of time unless you really need somebody to talk too. we talk about fishing, tides, weather, anything really. Its the talking not the subject thats important. Loneliness is a killer, so an hour out of my day isnt much if it helps somebody touch base, and its helps me too. wanting to be alone on the river isnt the same as being lonely.
Good man!!! Keep up the fishing brother its far better to be outdoors amongst it than being sat at home pissed off, it's good to talk even if it's via these msg's it helps me tons being in contact with various lubetuber's 🙏❤️
@@WD-41469 fair play to ya brother, it takes a real man to talk about his own trials n tribulations, myself, the @tattooed angler and you could be mental health msg buddies 😉🙏❤️
@@andybowyer3602 aye, it does a lot of us a lot of good. just knowing that theres people out there willing to talk to you about things like olive hatches, or early spring worm digging is a massive help. ive said a few times that most of us that go fishing dont realise that its not really fish that we're after. if youre willing to go out at 2am in the dead of winter to stand on a freezing beach with a friend, then what youre looking for is friendship.
Well for what it’s worth I think you did the right thing, even if you’d got back to your car you’d never have made it. Still,at least you caught something worthwhile. Keep it up 👍🐟🎣

Still, you managed to do something hundreds of others failed to do that day. I applaud you for sticking it out.

I'm tight too Robert so want to try and get the best value possible, but understand we live in a world where most people are used to next day delivery!
Locations nothing mate, I live near Derby. Being inland just means you get to pick where you want to fish 😉
@@theawfulangler I live just outside Leek,

Alright bud I used to fish spurn quite regularly when you could drive down but since the tidal surge of 2012 I’ve done it once and that was enough for me I got blisters as well commiserations on the fish bud but well done as well 90% of anglers blanked on the whole weekend me included well done bud 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍
I can't imagine it was half as good a venue being able to drive it. Competition aside, the walk is half the challenge for me as, easy a walk as it is. If dogs were allowed on there, I think it would defo become my favourite spot 👌🏽
Felt for you on that one. Hope you've got a big basin and some Epsom Salts to soak your feet in! Feel better soon.🎣
Thanks Nicola!
As a skipper we used to go fishing with used to say, it's a lazy wind, goes straight through you not round you. It's a bugger that fish can't tell time😁 Was fishing last week down here in NZ and had an eagle ray swim past probably around 60 kg and a thorny back ray over 100 kg, they are so not bothered with fishermen you could probably hand feed them
Haha that's a great saying, I'll be using that in future.
I don't understand why folk don't target the rays down your neck of the woods. At least that's the impression I get anyway. But there could be some great sport to be had.
@@theawfulangler Kingfish are the go to sport fish either land based or by boat. No market for rays skates etc as a table fish fishing comps don't do rays for prizes they can provide a little light relief sometimes especially the eagle rays they "fly" through the water like a manta ray
So unlucky mate, thats the only snag of the comp ,when you travel far you got to be bk at weigh in ,and anything could happen. A couple of nice fish thow mate. All the best from GRIMSBY.
Cheers Carl! Yeah that just it, and to be honest I think if I'd gone elsewhere it would have been another blank too.
well on pal cracking video

This was great never mind the competition great fish.
Thanks mate. Stung a bit at the time, but yeah 2 nice fish that any other day would have made for a great session
We felt your pain actually thought you were going to 'rush' back to weigh in.
What a heart braker 3 fish but what a different world that was compared to the rest of the venue. Now a little winge this match should have a SET time to fish and the competitors should have ample time to get weight in with the organisers understanding of the time to get weight in from the beaches they are aloud to fish on the free for all aspect isn't right and yes i have been match Secretary and i am on the committee of a very large fishing club so i know of what i talk. If you do set up a match let us know I'll try to make it. Well done for catching mate
Thanks mate!
I think the EOBC suffers from its own popularity, to be honest. Dates are already set for next year's comp, so it shows that there's no consideration for the tide times, etc. I kind of agree with the weigh-in times. It gives a slight disadvantage to fishing where I was. I think without that disadvantage, it would be massively overcrowded.
Gutted for you m8,electric bike might of helped,ha ha .Great vid again made my sunday

@@theawfulangler exactly make it where it cheap enough anybody can enter and let's be honest anybody could win. Sounds a great idea.
Ironic that you spoke about moving so you can say at least you've tried but when it comes to trying to make the weigh in you decided to stay😢
Haha, not a chance was I making that weigh in! It would have been 4pm by the time I got back to the van, then a good half-hour drive. I can usually make up time, but not that much 😔
If its any consolation then the probable reason for your catch was twofold. 1. The amount of unused bait been thrown in when each angler left and 2. The amount of disturbance in the water from all those leads during match hours. You mentioned that a cod had been caught the previous day from there that earned the angler money. I bet the number of Anglers fishing that day was nowhere near as many as was fishing either side of you. Pity you didn't have the transport to get you back to the van in time. Maybe next year🤞🤞🎣🎣🎣
I think the most likely cause is the state of tides. Unfortunately, the tide times aren't considered when choosing the dates and fishing times it seems. It was just coming up to slack water as the bites came on. Where I was just around the point meant that a lot of weed started to accumulate. I'm pretty sure if I'd have moved, for the 4th time, back to the point it would have produced.
well I did laugh, I'm unfit and I've got a massive blister on my foot.
Nothing but honesty here Jason
Should of bought an ebike lol

Hey Dave! The only thing I have with a personal message option is Instagram mate, but ya welcome to drop me a message on there
That weight in time is ridiculous fish 10 till 4 then have to get back to the caravan park to weight in so if you fish that match and get a good fish early on pack up and head to the weight in early and have a few pints 🐟 🎣
It's frustrating. But at the same time, the results still don't come out until 7/8pm. You don't really want to be hanging around later than that after a hard day's fishing and another one on the cards the next day.
