    Subscribe for more of this type of voice: the oktavist is a type of voice used in Russian liturgical and folk music. These singers sing roughly an octave below the bass range. The point of this video, however, is not to demonstrate the sheer depth of these voices, but rather their power. Any bass can croak these notes into a microphone, but what sets these voices apart is their ability to perform notes like this over a choir, to a large audience, with absolutely no amplification. I have here featured only Russian oktavists, but there are many deep, powerful basses from other countries as well. Explore my channel to see a few!
    The lowest note for each oktavist is:
    Kovcheg oktavist (Pavel Myakotin), Ab1 at 0:15
    Kochetov, G1 @ 0:45
    Vishniakov, B1 @ 1:00
    Michalyk, B1 @ 1:21
    Kurilov, Ab1 @ 1:53
    Ort, B1 @ 2:18
    Miller, Bb1 @ 2:37
    Pasyukov, C#2 @ 3:03
    Kruglov, Bb1 @ 3:28
    Oktavist of Peter & Paul Fortess (Alexey Gdeshinsky), Ab1 @ 3:48
    Zlatopolsky, C2 @ 4:09
    Kovcheg Oktavist (Pavel Myakotin), F#1 @ 4:39
    For the lowest unamplified note ever recorded, see the video on my channel of Zlatopolsky hitting a double low C (C1) singing Prayer for the Dead with the Don Kosaken Choir.

Its most likely just me as people in my age group, sometimes older has never in their lives has ever heard a voice like the oktavists here despite me being only able to reach G1 forcibly (A1 is the most comfortable low note I have and in the morning F#1’s the lowest I can go as of now). • @cemstrumental
      @cemstrumental 3 года назад +34

      Yeah it's also one specific harmonic. It's a C#5 (The 9th harmonic of B1) and it's approx. a bit over 125 times (Decible wise) louder than the actual fundamental (B1). The reason is probably, that the mic is bad and doesn't have a flat frequency response and a rather large response spike at probably around 550hz, making that overtone stand out much higher than the rest. I'm pretty sure if you were there, hearing that live, you wouldn't hear that harmonic as near as loud as in this video.

    OK, I'm a bass singer in church choir, and I give up on this one. I have no idea how to keep my pitch steady in such low notes, let alone vocalizing audible lyrics! But perhaps it will improve with age. (20 years to go *sigh*)

      Some of the. ARE actually using harmonics, like Paul Mihalyk. Alexander Ort isn't. A harmonic has a very distinct reedy sound to it. I have a low range myself, "C1", I can sing it chest voice or with a harmonic. A lot of the really low notes really are harmonics!

    • @MultiKamil97
      @MultiKamil97 7 лет назад +5

      MichaelGaribaldi Nah. They wouldn't be considered oktavists then. If that was the case they could get hundreds of tenors with ability to do subharmonics. The special thing in these men is that they only use their chest voice. With voice that low it's normal that it sounds like subharmonics.

    I love how they start with a higher note and then immediately descend down to "aaa" low note. It sounds like the ferry's horn! :D

    WOW!! That last note doesn't sound humanly possible. That guys is in Tuba, Double Bass, and 16' great organ pipe territory. Not sure how that's physically possible, especially at that loudness.
