Between Brad's realization and then play on the lyrics, and Lex grooving along with nearly every single note. This was my favorite Brad & Lex Van Halen reaction so far. So much fun.
Every song on the first Van Halen KICKS ASS!! You guys NEED to listen to and react to EVERY song on the 1st Van Halen album, the next one you need to react to is a song called "Im the One"! High energy and totally kick ass guitar and vibe. Lex would DEFINITELY 100% love it!!
Thanks! VH did a handful of cover tunes, made them their own, and excelled at them. I would like to have seen VH when they were nobodies playing small venues.
This song is an example of why the David Lee Roth era Van Halen was the only one I liked. His vocals and personality add as much to the appeal of the music as EVH's guitar work. Of course, some people just don't like Roth, but I have no problem with him. Their later music was more polished but in a generic rock band way.
Singer David Lee Roth actually plays the acoustic guitar on this song. In concert, Dave had a guitar shaped like a creamsicle on a stick, with Davesickle written on the guitar. Plenty of videos from the 1980s of Dave playing the guitar in concert.
👍🏼 A lot of people don’t know that DLR could play guitar. He’s actually quite good as a rhythm guitar player. I wish he played a little more but when you were in a band with EVH, and the fact that you’re one of the best frontmen of any rock bands, 🤷🏻♂️
You guys should check out Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) also by Van Halen. Now that's an absolute hidden gem from them that showcases how versatile they are. It's also a song they did with their dad, Jan Van Halen.
A few months back, I re-watched all first 3 seasons of Boardwalk Empire and the only two songs I recognized were Just A Gigolo and Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now. And that's only because of DLR. Literally the only 2 songs that were even semi-recognizable (they only used songs of the day).
You guys should do Van Halen’s “Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now” from their Diver Down album - with a special guest clarinet solo by Jan Van Halen, Eddie and Alex’s DAD !
Reaction made me smile and cry at same time - miss EVH-what a performer. 1982 HS grad so VH huge part of my life-10+ live shows - always brought full energy

When Brad said I don't think this is about the Ice Cream Truck I about died laughing.. He was an Ice Cream truck driver and liked his regular stop! ;-p Brad was correct. It's an analogy and innuendo!
Original VH singer David Lee Roth was a character... he loved to do cover songs. Even after leaving VH, he recorded covers of Beach Boys' "California girls" ... also songs like 'Ladies night in Buffalo' ... 'Just a giggolo'... Eddie Van Halen was apparently not happy when half of Van Halen's 'Diver down' album in 1982 were covers.
Around the time of Diver Down, Eddie was moving more towards keyboards. DLR and Ted Templeton wanted to repeat what they knew worked, Eddie’s guitar. By the time they recorded 1984 they relented and let Eddie do his keyboard stuff too. Ted Templeton has said in hindsight he did not see it but Eddie was right.
@@alexo5861 yeah... Eddie insisted on calling the shots on '1984'... DLR relented, but was miserable on that tour... Sammy Hagar in 1985 just let Eddie do the music he wanted, which is why it was a better collaboration for a while...
I know Eddie was also upset because he had a keyboard riff he had wanted to use for their own song, and it ended up being used in the beginning of Dancing in the Streets. That was a horrible song to cover!
Brad & Lex, ya'll might wanna know this is Van Halen's first lead singer David Lee Roth playing acoustic guitar on that song. He was very important to the bands success, and was no doubt the bands most popular member. He pretty much owned the 80's.

Brad and Lex, you guys GOTTA react to Van Halen's STAY FROSTY. It is basically their Ice Cream Man part II recorded in 2012, some 34 years after Ice Cream Man released in 1978. It is amazing, just as cheeky and just as heavy and fun too. Please consider reacting to that. Keep up the fun videos. You guys are a fun distraction from all things dark and depressing in the news these days. Stay frosty my friends. :)
I visited Kansas City last week and outside of the Jazz Museum a man was playing this tune in it's original version on acoustic guitar. It sounded amazing.
I read that when Van Halen was in the studio recording this song, Eddie Van Halen created the guitar solo on the spot, first take, off the top of his head and that's what you are hearing in this song and he compared it to falling down the stairs and landing on your feet.

David Lee Roth loved the songs that were kind of quirky but still took a lot of talent to do right. 1984 was a great album but some of the songs could have easily been really bad if not for the talent of Eddie and Dave.
So fun! This free-spirited Goodtime Vibe is all over this first Van Halen album. There is not a bad song on it and it still sounds incredibly alive and vital considering that it's 40-plus years old at this point
'Unchained' live from Oakland video reaction please. It will show you how incredible they were live at the peak of their sucess. Also 'Hear About It Later' and 'So This Is Love' from the same tour. Incredible stuff!!!
The very first time I heard this song, I was16 years old. I am now 59 years old and it is still my favorite song from my favorite band. Loved seeing Lex react the way THAT I DID 43 years ago 🤟🏼🤟🏼
This is why DLR and Van Halen are so amazing! The songs (and videos) are always catchy and get your heart pumping. And musically they are fantastic and compliment each other perfectly. One of the best in the world.
2:06 considering some of Lex's reactions to Eddie's guitarwork.. I'm very surprised y'all haven't listened to more Van Halen. I'd love to see you guys check out Drop Dead Legs - one of my favorite tunes of theirs. Top Jimmy as well (the entire 1984 album is KILLER). Those involuntary smiles on your faces - that was the magic of Van Halen. How many artists from any genre make a person smile, or even laugh. Van Halen did.
You guys are awesome, love your takes. This is song is a traditional blues song (why you feel it's from the 50's 60's) supercharged and given high energy treatment by the Mighty Van Halen. The solo has a bunch of blues guitar standards that are just taken to another level by Eddie along with some of his own licks. Yes, you need to listen to the whole first album and then realize what was around in 1978 to see how Van Halen changed rock.
When it comes to the lyrics it's just so funny how it was *11 O'clock* that made *#Lex* realize we're Not talking about no ordinary *Ice Cream Man... LOL😆*
He may not have been a "man of the night" in this song, but on David Lee Roth's EP "Crazy from the Heat" he does "Just a Gigalo" (a cover of an old standard from the 1920s ... funny, i was going to just type "from the '20s" but now we have to be more specific ... its weird livin' in the future). You should check out David Lee Roth's solo work after Van Halen because it was campy and obscure covers (like this one, which is an old blues song from the '60s) that Dave always wanted to do that really drove the conflict between him and Eddie and ultimately got him kicked out of the band, so he goes all out with this type of song (rumor is Eddie absolutely hated Icecream Man)
Van Halen in the '70's and 80's were just pure and unmatchable unadulterated California fun in the sun pyrotechnics. They didn't really skip too many beats when Sammy Hagar took over for Dave and Dave didn't really dishonor himself too badly when he went solo. It was the Eighties, after all. And while there's no debate that DLH era Van Halen was better, don't sleep on the Sammy stuff, either.
Out of all of their albums, Diver Down has always been my favorite, but their debut was phenomenal. The whole thing is a straight bop. This one and Big Bad Bill always make me smile no matter how bad I feel.
You’re right about that. I don’t think those lyrics fit Sammy’s persona either. A good example that there is more to delivering a song than just having a good singing voice.

So I really liked your reactions to this song. So I'm going to make a suggestion here. David Lee Roth went on to have a solo carrier after Van Halen. On his first album he had a similar song to Ice Cream Man called, Just a Gigolo. So when you're thinking where you should go next, you could circle back to this one. Just a thought. 🤔🤔🤔

Lex, your reaction to this song brought true joy to my heart. I was actually moved to tears. This album was released in 1978. It was around 1983 the first time I ever heard it it, I was 15. I remember that same feeling of pure joy when I first heard it. Thank you for allowing me to relive that moment through you. 🥰
Funny I came across your comment, same age as me we grew up in the best era to be young, 54 now this song still gives me chills the solo was so explosive! Her reaction to this song made me feel good as well!! Where did the time go???? RIP EDDIE thanks for the memories!
If you liked that song, you should check out another song from that album (Van Helen’s 1st!), a song called “I’m The One”! It rips!! That whole 1st album is an all-time classic!!
This is such an underrated VH song, DLR lyrics and voice are incredible and the usual EVH kick ass guitar makes this such a unique and classic tune. I remember seeing this live in 1981 as VH opened up for The Rolling Stones and DLR sitting on a stool playing this and pounding a bottle of JD. ‘What a show! They killed it that day as they usually do. Stones weren’t bad either, lol !
This song just reminded me of a movie called Crossroads with Ralph Machio, the original Karate Kid. Anyways the movie is about a kid who's a classically trained guitarist, but his passion is playing the blues and knowing all its history. He ends up helping an old bluesman escape an elderly home because he claims to have some knowledge of which I'm blank at the moment. Anyways he really wants the kid to take him to the Crossroads to make another deal with the devil. Some really good guitar playing in this movie. And you get to see Steve Vai vs the karate kid on guitars.
David Lee Roth, the groups original singer, has an interesting personality that fits well with songs like this. After going solo he sang a number of similarly amusing songs; 'Yankee Rose', 'Just a Gigolo'...
Perfectly defines the line between the Roth era and the Hagar era. They went from "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" to "Love Comes Walking In" and "Why Can't This Be Love". BLECH.
If u haven’t listened to these Van Halen songs u need to: Pound Cake, Finish What Ya Started and Cabo Wabo. They have so many awesome songs but these are my three favorites with Sammy Hagar on vocals.

I love knowing what’s coming and thinking “just wait for it…” before they start to wail, and then seeing their faces when it happens 😂
Another fun song with a great ending. Yeah, he's not just talking about ice cream.
@@tommcdonough6086 yes, I strongly agree
Gosh I thought I was the only one that would cry for this!
Y'all are definitely VH fans, something off Fair Warning like Sinners Swing or Mean Street, you won't be disappointed.
I recommend "Push comes to shove" from Fair Warning.
This song is pure gold. What an incredible guitar player.
If you liked that song, you should check out another song from that album (Van Helen’s 1st!), a song called “I’m The One”! It rips!! That whole 1st album is an all-time classic!!
Great song!! Later on in their career they did a song called Stay Frosty which for whatever reason reminds me of this song.
Man the world misses Eddie...
David Lee Roth, the groups original singer, has an interesting personality that fits well with songs like this. After going solo he sang a number of similarly amusing songs; 'Yankee Rose', 'Just a Gigolo'...
This song is pure Blues. It is a masterpiece. It's about sex. Ice cream is innuendo. Love the reaction.
Van Halen with David Lee Roth had a lot of jazz influence.
Oh if you want a really big departure from Van Halen's usual sound, try their song "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)".
Great Cover, reminds me of my recently departed Uncle William who was a small but Hard military man in his youth.
That song was all about fun. Great watching you have fun listening to it.✌️
This song is great! Atomic Punk is good also! I never cared for David Lee Roth……great voice, but too pretty……lol.❤️RIP EVH❤️
Pretty? Have you seen him since the 80s and his hair fell out?
All of van halens shit back in late 70s early 80s primo. Omg I was at THE US FESTIVAL GREATEST SHOE EVER
Also gotta get to Beautiful Girls, Everybody Wants Some, and one of my favorites, Atomic Punk
Great Band...My next choice would be: "Why can't this be love"...awesome song!!
atomic punk next :D
@@Joshuadgog fine by me!
Perfectly defines the line between the Roth era and the Hagar era. They went from "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" to "Love Comes Walking In" and "Why Can't This Be Love". BLECH.
Seriously??
If u haven’t listened to these Van Halen songs u need to: Pound Cake, Finish What Ya Started and Cabo Wabo. They have so many awesome songs but these are my three favorites with Sammy Hagar on vocals.
