  • Welcome to my First Drive video of the all-new Lexus RX450h Plug-in Hybrid. I decided to give it the ultimate test and take it on a 500 mile road trip to Cornwall with Mrs G and the pups.
The new RX450h has a striking new look, especially in this striking colour Sonic Copper. The fit and finish inside the cabin are of the highest quality and the plug-in hybrid drive train delivers a smooth drive to cover miles with ease. But what is the car like to live with and just how complex is the drive train and how efficient is it ?

Personally, I feel Lexus are one of the best car makers out there. Reliable, well made, comfortable, stylish... One thing that is second to none, seems to be the dealer service. Lexus, seem to look after their customers better than many, if not all brands do. A great car, although the colour is too 'out there' for me. Great review!

I love the look of this car, way better than the out going RX.
Having been a Lexus owner in the past, I can talk from experience about the way these cars are so well built, are supremely comfortable and are Uber reliable.
This could get me back into a Lexus.

Hi Pete, try the NX equivalent. £50k (base model that comes with all essential kit) virtually identical apart from ‘luxuries’ you don’t need. We use it EV locally and on a run south to St Austell from Sheffield we get 38mpg - we drive it pure EV in town and switch to HV on the motorway. Been running ours for 12 months and it is everything you have described in the RX for a lot less money. The total current average MPG figure @ 8K is 68mpg when 80% EV use during the week to work and HV for 2 long journeys per month to our son in Daventry. Great review. By the way, I have to switch off ‘lane assist’ every time we start the car - modern life with nanny state legislation, just get your head around it…🙂

What a great looking car... Do like SUVs - not just for the high driving position but also the extra headroom - I'm "only" 6ft3 but have a very long back & neck which makes 'ordinary' hatches etc a bit tight for headroom - had 6 months with a 1-series and I lost count of the number of times my head hit the roof when going over bumps.

I do have a soft spot for a Lexus and that colour is certainly very striking... I did have to chuckle when you showed the typical Cornish road... On our last family trip to The Kerno, we ended up on a road just like that with a blooming squirel that ran for about a quater of a mile in the centre of the lane and kept stopping to look back at us, then carried on running along in front of the car... It was rather funny!!

Looks a lovely car and I really like the design. Personally I would go for the ‘self charge’ hybrid model and save £12k on the price. Still an expensive car but, as you say, aren’t so many similar quality cars ridiculously expensive? When I bought my RAV4 hybrid (which I think is a great car) I worked out it would take me 8yrs of fuel saving to recoup the extra £10k for the plug in hybrid over the ‘self charge’ hybrid which over the last 15mths of ownership has averaged 50mpg in general mixed driving ..

Great review Ped - the interior of the car looks great, but the exterior colour - can only describe as metallic beige. uuurgh. I have a Rav4 hybrid, these are great cars - and they have a spare wheel. I agree with your comment about the £80k price tag. As suggested go for the hybrid not the plug in - just not worth the additional cost - will take far too long to break even.

    Hi Ped,
    Good review!
I work for Lexus and the bong is indeed annoying, I suspect it will be fixed with a software update at some point, Sport mode is accessed via the screen, 4 little boxes in an icon at the bottom will open a page where you can quickly select drive mode, and to confuse matters S on the gear selector is more to be thought of as simulated gears. I recommend if our press team let you have a go try a day or two in the RX500, if the press team can't accommodate you let me know and I'll be able to wangle you our one for a couple of days.

Interestingly, I get 35mpg from my previous generation RX450H on longer journeys.
Where this gen will succeed is useage on shorter trips with mpg in mid to late 40s achievable.
The interior looks far more in keeping with the times compared to prev gen, so that's a definite win. The V6 power train does tick a box, which a 4 cylinder cannot.
The price is a reflection of modern-day high-end vehicles. As always, it's a very good video 👍

Coming from a 2018 RX 350 Luxury and 2022 350 RX Luxury to now a 2024 RX 450H+, I can tell you there are a LOT features Lexus improved on dramatically. The gawd awful mouse/touch pad infotainment control is finally gone. The exterior cameras around the car are finally a proper HD resolution. The Navigation is finally HD and properly 3D rendered. The 360 and 3D Camera views are much better which now had “underneath car view” where your car become transparent. So many little upgrades to basically all their features.
The only thing that is disappointing was that the auto anti-glare is only on the internal rear view and driver side mirror. For some reason they took it off the passenger side.

Some owners have managed to turn the BONG off in the US / Canada by turning it to visual alert only. This seems to remember the settings for future and stops the BONG all the time. Whether it works in the UK is to be seen but I suspect it can probably be turned off by turning off the speed sign recognition system similiar to new VAG models

Now I'm working again I have a Hyundai Ionic Hybrid that I've had since 2019 and really like it.
I'm now considering a PHEV. My question is, once you use all the charge from the battery and return to hybrid driving, is the fuel economy lots worse than a standard hybrid due to the added weight of the extra battery? Thanks.

I am 100% with you regarding the speed bong. In no country of the world will you be punished for going a couple miles or kilometers per hour over the speed limit. So everyone will be annoyed by it going off instantly and either turn it off, or tune it out. Both of which completely defeats the purpose of an overspeed warning. Make it go off at 5, 10 or 15 speed units over the limit, user-configurable, and it does serve a purpose other than legal CYA. And yes, I do like the color!

As an observer with IAM if one of my students drove in that way or if I was in a car with a friend or family member I’m afraid I would have to say something. I had a 450h for a year. Dealerships and reliability - none better. I bought it partly after truly terrible experiences with Mercedes dealers But I sold the car mainly because of the gearbox (and the previous version's stone age infotainment screen - not relevant here). Anybody who enjoys driving I think would struggle with the box and I think that's the coded message in this Video! Only ever got 35mpg from the self-charging version, though rarely got much below 30....

I don't see the issue with the old infotainment. Once you get used to it it's pretty easy. What does anyone use it for anyway, radio and that's about it? Which is easy. Carplay it just becomes a big touch screen like any others.

One huge point for diehard RX fans is the loss of the 3.5 V6 and a naturalky aspirated engine with yhe introduction of a 4 pot turbo engine. No more V6 characteristics and is likeky to have less longebity than a NA engine, reliability being a key reason to buy Lexus. Time will tell.

If you like the large PHEV SUV that wafts along and is actually cheaper and just as premium feeling with more power you should look at the Volvo XC60 T8 Recharge. I do like the fact Lexus pretty much started the hybrid thing so should have a lot of experience with making one though.

@@guylambrechts2303 Horses for courses. The Volvo is bigger and I can't see the Lexus being more comfortable as the Volvo can be specced with memory multi electrical adjustable heated/cooled/massage seats and with air suspension and is still cheaper. Can't argue with the Lexus track record on reliability and owner satisfaction though. I actually prefer the more understated looks of the XC60 and with 440 bhp it's a real sleeper.

Nah tried the XC90 v the old RX and there was no comparison. XC90 was bland, minimalist and didn't feel anywhere near as well built or luxurious as the RX. Sat in it prior to RX and got out after 30 secs, went straight to Lexus sat in the RX and immediately felt like a different vehicle and decided to buy it within minutes.

Agree about PHEV’s being a good compromise - especially with the current charging infrastructure. My only gripe is most PHEVs have smaller petrol tanks than their full ICE equivalent. So once the 30-50 miles on battery have gone, your left with a smaller fuel tank.

Lexus does get the reputation of being for older and retired drivers but I suppose I am retired but have not accepted I am old yet even though as a boy if you were 60 you were definitely old. I have to admit having just driven an Evoque plug in Hybrid it might have been the better choice than the i-Pace but that said I still really like it. Lexus not for me but I see the positives.
