- Roy Hamilton (1929-1969) had achieved major success in the US R & B and pop charts in the 1960s. Best known for his top hits "Unchained Melody" and You'll Never Walk Alone". His "Unchained Melody" reached no. 6 on US Billboard Hot 100 and no. 1 on US R&B (Billboard) chart.
When I was a teenager in the '50's this was THE VERSION that everyone heard. The girls loved this guy. He never got due credit - what a voice!!!!!
Did white women love him, too.
@@christianbetancourt4648 - I'm sure ANY woman who heard (and saw!) this man would have loved him. Such talent always has transcended race. He only lived to age 40? Why am I just hearing of him?
@J S my friend, things were different in the old days.
Blacks were made famous but not as famous and wealthy as white performers.
In the old days, and even today, a black man has power behind a church pulpit and with faith in God.
God Bless my friend
@@christianbetancourt4648 When Roy performed in Miami in the 1950s, whites would flock to the venue in the black neighborhood to watch him. Roy, who was about 6'2" or 6'3", had to have security because women, I assume of all races, would rush the stage and tear his clothes off to get a memento. They weren't trying to hurt him, but they put him in danger.
Elvis loved him to when he died Elvis sent his widow flowers for six months straight every single day .
Elvis payed all his medical bills and funeral sent his wife flowers every day for 6 months. And he only met the man once he admired him so much.. RESPECT
he made millions stealing his art, so he might as well pay a little pittance.

Elvis was a real gentleman ; there is no shortage of stories attesting to his real character
Roy Hamilton version of Unchained Melody is GREAT!!
It certainly is
Better then righteous Brothers. In my opinion. I could listen to this repeat. Righteous Brothers while are good I just can't listen on repeat.
HE SANG IT FIRST ON WAX MY DADDY WOULD PLAY ALL HIS RECORDS, LISTEN TO HIS OTHER SONGS, BEAUTIFUL.
Still is.
Roy Hamilton was one of the best singers who ever lived. He had a really great voice. He died much too young. He now sings with the angels. r.i.p. Roy You are missed here on earth.
He actually basically lost his voice or damaged it in such a manner to destroy his career. I believe the “Hold me tight & don’t let go” lyrics was his last hit.
@@MrPoodleguy HOW did he damage his voice ? He sounds like Elvis Presley !
@@victorlionelnazaire685 Elvis sounds like him.He was actually a childhood idol of Elvis.Elvis as well as Jackie Wilson greatly admired this man.
@@melvinpruitt3907
A pity Ebony and Essence magazines did not write a 4-page article with color photos on this artist ; I have just discovered this great singer thanks to RUclips.
@@MrPoodleguy You overlooked "You Can Have Her" (another great song by Roy) in 1961 (#6 on the R&B chart and on which his voice sounds fine to me).
I'm shook. Such a smooth, rich voice. Roy Hamilton had the look, the talent, the voice and the style. It's a crime he died so young.
The First Elvis
@@Justice4fashunu Truth!
My first time hearing this man; I’m a new fan! Love his voice. We need a mini series on his life that includes Elvis who’s music I grew up loving and still adore. He was truly Elvis mentor and Elvis emulated him to an amazing career coupled with his own style, talent and charisma. Maybe they’re doing duets in the Heavenly Choir!!!
Lmao, never heard anything so ridiculous in all my life.
Elvis was at sun from 1954/55 when Roy was doing ballads.
Roy's hits dried up and he then copied elvis..
Both artists started off within weeks of each other with recording contracts, Elvis was releasing blue moon of kentucky, good rocking tonight, baby let's play house all in 1954, whilst Roy was singing ballads.
Elvis may have listened to his ballads like he did other recording artists, but I see no evidence of him mentoring Elvis
@@adrinathegreat3095, Elvis himself said it, it was no secret he copied Roy's technique. Even people who recorded with Elvis have mentioned this in documentaries. They were friends and Roy was his inspiration, it's public knowledge
Roy had a huge influence on Elvis and they were close. According to Roy, Jr. when his father was ill and in a coma in the hospital Elvis sent Roy's wife, Myrna, a rose every day. When Roy passed away Elvis sent her roses for the following six months. Roy was heavily in debt prior to his death because of back taxes, and Elvis also paid Roy's medical bills and funeral expenses.
Elvis stole this song and many more from Black people. Please stop!
@@sibylkelley8341 Regarding Elvis Presley's payment of Roy's bills and sending flowers to his widow it is a fact if Wikipedia is accurate. Here is the quote from Wikipedia: "In a 2017 documentary for the BBC, Hamilton's son Roy Hamilton, Jr. revealed that Elvis Presley sent Roy's wife, Myrna, a rose every day Hamilton was in the hospital. When Hamilton passed away from complications of his stroke, Presley sent Myrna flowers for the following six months. At the time of his death Hamilton was heavily in debt, forcing him, a week before he died, to borrow heavily on his insurance policy to pay off back taxes. This prompted his widow, Myrna, to publicly seek funds for his burial. Elvis Presley is said to have covered Hamilton's outstanding medical bills and funeral costs. At Hamilton's funeral service, messages of condolence sent by Presley, Mahalia Jackson and B.B. King were read out to the mourners.
I can't believe I've never heard of Roy Hamilton before today... WoW! Thanks to Comedian Godfrey.
53 and I'm just now hearing about him. Oh my goodness, I thought this was Elvis. Wow!!!
This is one of the most beautiful songs written since "Nessun Dorma". The Righteous Brothers have the definitive version, but this one is excellent. Roy Hamilton doesn't get near enough credit for his work--probably, in part, because he died so young. Bravo, Sir!
I discovered Roy late in life but I'm so happy I did. What a magnificent voice.
A magnificent voice. I wish this version wasn't so music box in its tempo. If it had some of variation like Bobby Hatfield's version would b over the top.
@@finallythere100 If it weren't for Roy's version there would be no Bobby Hatfield version 10 years later. Bill Medley was a big admirer of Roy Hamilton, and the Rghteous Brothers recorded at least three songs that were hits for Hamilton about 10 years earlier--Unchained Melody, Ebb Tide (both solos by Hatfield), and You'll Never Walk Alone.
O.B Masingill is my father, who was the conductor of the orchestra. Thank you so much for sharing his music.

When I had a date and Roy sang this song I immediately fell in love. What clarity and precision in his voice is just the best. So many people have never heard of him. They are missing so much.
What a beautiful voice. When I was younger it would almost put me in a trance, I never heard a man's voice sound so strong and delicate at the same time.
yeah that Elvis stole this man's mannerism and his voice white people ain't got nothing but brutality and savory tree

I'm black and proud!!! Bless you Roy Hamilton!!!
Im white , and right! :P
Elvis always gave credit to those who influenced him, yet he had a very distinct tone if his own which is unparalleled ❤
Roy Hamilton is one of the greatest singers I've ever heard, shame he was never given a real killer hit or ever really had great production on his records.
because Ekvis stole his voice and identity
@@francescaldwell4217 idiotic thing to say, they don't sound very alike mostly did a different style of music. Elvis recording I'm gonna sit right down and cry, about two years after it wasn't a hit for Roy and only being an album track. Elvis Career had no negative effect on Roys other than perhaps changing the dominance of Jazz/song book standards which Roy was strongest in to Rnb, country and Rock n' Roll. but even that falls flat has Roy had success as an Rock'n'Roll/RnB singer. main difference between Roy and Elvis was Elvis was an innovator and a great singer, Roy was just a great singer
@@flemit35 I agree that Elvis had nothing to do "stealiing" this man's songs, thus ruining his career. What a ridiculous claim to make. Also that claim makes no sense.
I had never heard of this singer Roy Hamilton, until a few hours ago. This is the first song I played because of the title...
While RH is truly a wonderful singer, and this song he recorded in 1955: "Unchained Melody", was sung by quite a few other singers...however in 1965, I understand, became a massive hit when Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers fame sang it.
I just found that info today! I was only aware of Bobby H. singing that epic mega hit that's still popular to this day. I never heard any other recordings of this song, (*just non professionals trying to win in televised talent shows, karaoke singers, that type) nor knew of any. In my opinion, and millions of others, Bobby Hatfield owns this song, and for the majority, no one comes close.
I think BH did a truly stunning magnificent stand out performance with his epic rendition of "Unchained Melody", that no one can ever top.
Other than that, I always was a huge Elvis fan. Loved his singing, performances, and even his movies, from childhood and even beyond his passing.

Are you above 70 right now?? Please let me know
ROY Hamilton is the King of Rock n Roll period.
But thus is NOT a "rock and roll" song.🥺😬🙈😆😫😖
Even Elvis knew at that time the colored were limited by society and didn’t get the opportunity to be known. This is why Elvis became the King of Rock and Roll because he became well known as well as he was extremely talented and gifted

Roy Hamilton was one of Elvis' all time favorite singers, and the two met and enjoyed each other's company during Elvis' recording sessions at American Studios in Memphis in 1969. Sadly, Mr. Hamilton passed away just a few weeks later.
Na Elvis Presley completely stole Roy Hamiltons style. There's a documentary on this. Also an interview with Elvis's long time basis admiting to Elvis immitating Roy.

I REMEMBER MY DADDY PLAYING THIS SONG, ON HIS HIFI 78IN RECORD WAX RIP DADDY.
I’ve never actually heard this incredible singer. I’ve known of him most of my life but never heard him sing. This man had one of the greatest Baritone voices ever! His voice had shades of classical singing, soul and jazz crooning…..all at once! Unreal! Why are all the great singers gone? Why can’t we promote and make famous real talent like this anymore.? What an incredible singer,……
I always loved his voice. I saw him in the fifties and he was great. Fantastic voice then and now
my husband was a trumpet player with a dance band in the UK in the 1950s. when he played this solo the dancing stopped and everyone stood and swayed, It was so beautiful
Pity one does not hear this type of music in the modern era. I never get tired of listening to Roy's music.
This is the first vocal I heard of this song when I was 11. When I was in college the Righteous Brothers' version came out and was a special song for my boyfriend and me..

The musical range of this man’s voice is superb. I did not know his name listening to him on radio stations in Jamaica as an 11 year old.

the melody was written by Alex North and the lyrics by Hy Zaret. Elvis didn't "take" anything from Roy hamilton.
