I've known Jeffrey for years and have sang with him. He's from the Harrisburg, PA area and is one of the nicest guys around!! Listen to more of his work... Hero in Me and Dark Love song in particular - both originals he wrote himself, then you may appreciate him even more!!
Back in college, I sang "I Don't Think So" as part of a class project. Next time you see Mr. Gaines, thank him for the "A" I got in my Music and Culture class for me. ;)
Agreed, JG is one of the coolest cats on the planet. But to single out only 2 songs - which I love to death - does him a disservice. And that's a good thing, not an insult. Easily one of my favorite artists and proud to have seen him many times. Cheers Tammi, jealous as all get out you had the honor. The greatest thing about Jeffrey, to me, is it doesn't seem that he cares about fame. It's all about the music. I think he has a channel here but will probably never acknowledge it.
I couldn't even guess how long it's been. I just know the first time I heard it was in an anime music video with scenes from Martian Successor Nadesico. So probably close to 20 years at this point.
Jeffrey Gaines is a magical artist, so talented. Last Sunday my son and I had the good fortune to have a late night beverage with him. A beautiful man, loved his stories. Then two nights later at my request he sang this song. May the good lord look down on Mr. Gaines, always...........
My husband and I love your version of this Peter Gabriel classic. In fact we used this version for our first dance at our wedding. Amazing voice. A truly beautiful rendition.
For the record, Peter Gabriel does not have a "version." Anyone who is NOT Peter Gabriel and performs this song is performing their own "version" of Peter Gabriel's original. That being said, Jeffrey's cover is well-done, and adds a unique element in heading to the lower ranges as opposed to Mr. Gabriel's falsetto parts. Jeffrey sings it as if he'd written the song…which is the only way a cover should be sung. Well-played/sung, Mr. Gaines.
I agree with you David. I saw Jeffrey Gaines in concert with Edwin McCain in 1999 and he was awesome. I loved the way Jeffrey performed the song then and now.
I just got home and seen him in Atlanta and was blown away!!! What a voice words can't describe this gentleman's voice. I had goosebumps through the whole show. Thank you for an amazing show.
Others have done good covers of In Your Eyes, but hands down, this guy has the best interpretation of this song. ..the voice, soul, feeling... just works very nicely.
...Peter Gabriel is a musical genius, and I love this song and Peter's original version. But when you take an amazing song by a musical genius and add this much vocal talent, you can't help but end up with something spectacular. For the life of me can't understand why Jeffrey Gaines isn't a household name, he is that talented.
Completely agree, Jeffrey Gaines is one of the most talented artists I've ever come across and its a terrible shame he's not more well known. I've bought everything he's ever released and I recommend to all to do the same. Few rival his ability. We are the lucky ones, we know him and have seen his shows and own his work. Blame the record companies because he should have been huge.
came across him accidentally a few years ago looking up Ben Harper songs then saw in comments it's Jeffrey Gaines. man I absolutely love this song! Grew up knowing Peter Gabriel singing it, fell in love all over again with this song and his voice. one of the most beautiful love songs ever in my opinion
Autumn Fowler it is peters song,he did write it,which I think it what you said lol.just wasnt sure.but, this is the version I perform, absolutely love it.
He was SO CLOSE to making it Big Time..... For those who were there at the beginning--- His music is still our personal secret...Something we still have to ourselves and nobody else knows about it....
Murdock Trashbag OK first of all… NICELY PUT!! I feel bad for the people that I don't get it! I loved this version from the second I heard it but it reached in and grabbed my soul when I saw him live!! #oursecret
I feel the same way... I bought this album in 2001... I loved this girl so much.. Her and I just started to date when this song came out... We split up.. But I come back to this song from time to time.... and it takes me right back to her.... The MEMORIES.. Jeffrey is definitely our little secret....
Saw Jeffrey live opening for Tracey Chapman back in the early 2000s and his performance of this song live got me to purchase all of his merch that day. Still feel like he should be considerably more well known than he is.
You always know a great song when you can strip away all affections, and bring it back to a guitar, and an amazing voice. Jeffrey Gaines, I tip my hat to you sir, I’ve been listening to Peter Gabriel since the 70’s. Phenomenal !! Proof positive that major record labels have little interest in “Music” than “Muzak”.
Jeffery, I was blessed years, & I mean Years ago to see you do a set before a concert I went to at " Nautica" in Cleveland. I never forgot you and I bring up your music all the time in conversation. " Hero" & ect... Thank you. Peace & Blessing's
I got his first Solo record when it came out in 1992, The whole 1st record is just incredible every song is absolutely soul stirring. You can pick it up on spotify or your favorite streaming service you will not be disappointed it will be your favorite record
Almost, but being better than mediocre listeners like you and I and everyone else commenting on this post know he's already a household name for all of our playlist
I haven't seen him in ages but he's a wonderful live performer. Puts on an excellent show and has some great original songs too. I haven't listened to him in ages and just walked down memory lane listening to this. I don't care for this video - looks very fake. He's a genuine guy and deserves better. He used to tour the east coast of the US a lot!
My mom and I used to listen to this together on summer nights when we would go out driving. We loved how the audience would take up the "in your eyes" towards the end, and Jeffrey would say "thanks" :)
I haven't listened to this song in a few years because of what it was attached to but now it's back on the playlist because no more attachment and it feels great!
Love I get so lost, sometimes Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart When I want to run away I drive off in my car But whichever way I go I come back to the place you are All my instincts, they return And the grand facade, so soon will burn Without a noise, without my pride I reach out from the inside In your eyes The light, the heat In your eyes I am complete In your eyes I see the doorway to a thousand churches In your eyes The resolution of all the fruitless searches In your eyes I see the light and the heat In your eyes Oh, I want to be that complete I want to touch the light The heat I see in your eyes Love, I don't like to see so much pain So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away I get so tired of working so hard for our survival I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive And all my instincts, they return And the grand facade, so soon will burn Without a noise, without my pride I reach out from the inside In your eyes The light, the heat In your eyes I am complete In your eyes I see the doorway to a thousand churches In your eyes The resolution of all the fruitless searches In your eyes I see the light and the heat In your eyes Oh, I want to be that complete I want to touch the light The heat I see in your eyes In your eyes, in your eyes In your eyes, in your eyes In your eyes, in your eyes
I love it when I come across someone I've never heard about, and they just blow me away. This happened today on one of my Pandora stations when it dropped this track on me. Wow. Totally blew me away! Such a powerful, soulful voice, and a great interpretation of this wonderful Peter Gabriel song. Bravo!
I'm glad this song is preserved on youtube. This was a great live performance and a bad video. Oh well, this song deserves to be out there to be heard. Jefffrey Gaines really nailed this track live and better than the original. Needs help on the video though.
GIVES ME CHILLS EVERY TIME I HEAR IT........ " THANK YOU"..... IT'S ALWAYS DID SOMETHING TO ME........ IT TAKES ME TO THE PLACE WHERE I FIRST HEARD THIS VERSION......... WHAT AN AWESOME VERSION OF A SONG THAT PLAYED A MILLION TIMES BUT NEVER HEARD..........
15 years ago, my mother, 8 months pregnant with me went to one of his concerts, and she was thinking of using the name Jeffrey to name me. A month later, I was born and was given the name Jeffrey. I feel lucky to be named after such an amazing singer
So much is wasted and each moment is slipping away , But I look too these times with you, To keep me awake and Alive............ beautifully penned by Peter Gabriel ..... Too See and Touch the light &The Heat in one's eyes brings one closer to Spiritual Enlightenment....
i heard the peter gabriel version on the radio today at work and i thought 'i wish it was that acoustic cover i used to listen to all sneaky on my brother's computer'. i came home later with the craving and searched for this. my mom listened to peter gabriel all the time. i knew the words to this song when i was knee high to a grasshopper. but i now sing along to it the way jeffrey does.
Wow!!!! That was Freaking Cool!!!! I have Always loved this song and learned how to play it on guitar too, but Damn...................... What a Grooooove that I can learn from now!!!
I know this comment is almost a decade old now but I gotta know, who are you referring to? Peter Gabriel the original writer of the song is still alive and so is Jeffrey Gaines.
Love his voice. I found out about him when I heard his version of "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" on the first season of "So You Think You Can Dance." Loved it and had to have it.
I remember i randomly found this song many yearss ago on some mp3 site. I was like whoa this guy is doing it, and i loved how he really played the sht outta that guitar, it matched his vocal passion. But yea it was a regular part of my listening rotation for awhile.
Very soulful performance. Be sure to catch Jeffrey live at Listen Live Music in Zionsville PA (just west of Allentown PA) on Saturday evening, 11/26/11. This is a great house that only holds about 100 people, for a very intimate look at this great performer..
Jeffrey Gaines sang at my wedding this past August! Live in person up at Full Moon Resort/ Big Indian NY...this was our first dance! it was an unbelievable surprise! hopefully full moon resort uploads the photos i sent sometime this year!
The most perfect cover song ever recorded... EVER!
The most perfect cover song recorded that YOU'VE ever heard. In other words, of all the cover songs you've heard this one is the best you've heard.
I just saw him at Haddonfield Music Festival in New Jersey. Very witty and humble guy. And....THAT voice!
I saw him there too, love him
I've known Jeffrey for years and have sang with him. He's from the Harrisburg, PA area and is one of the nicest guys around!! Listen to more of his work... Hero in Me and Dark Love song in particular - both originals he wrote himself, then you may appreciate him even more!!

Very cool video. This song is dedicated to everyone who lost a loved one. ruclips.net/video/JSbGGiSe3S8/видео.html
that's not a song, it's a masterpiece !
This song was everywhere in the fall of 92 in the college radio scene.
I’ve been listening to this cover for over 10 years & it never gets old!!! 💜💜💜
20 years here. Still damn good
Been about 5 yrs and I'm back
My favorite cover by anyone EVER!!! LOVE THIS AND JEFFREY
This song always gets me depressed however this version doesn't. This is probably the only version I'll now listen to
I couldn't even guess how long it's been. I just know the first time I heard it was in an anime music video with scenes from Martian Successor Nadesico. So probably close to 20 years at this point.
I was trying to find this song for year, I used to listen to it when I was young. Great great singer. ❤

Great cover! The intensity is on point!❤❤❤ This lyric is pure magic!

Still listening in december 2023 🙌 Still Amazing !!!! Happy xmas
This song truly hits hard. I wasn’t born when it came out out but I’ve been listening to it with my dad ever since I was 3.❤
I saw him many years ago in NYC. His talent still gives me the chills. Certainly one of the best solo acoustic performances EVER!
Used to listen to this on WEQX in Vermont back in high school. Great version!

A awesome rendition of this song , get your beats up.
Wow, never knew a black man did this version. I love this one. I love both but this one just has something to it for me.
Still the best cover of this fantastic song
The best cover of all time 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
This is the perfect example of how to do a cover song the right way.
Make it your own but convey the
emotion and heart of the original.
I have loved this man since 1994... saw you many many times...
I love this remake. I have been playing it over and over in my car.
Beautiful
Great cover, love this song and incredible voice!!!!
Thanks 2 WXPN, saw him live when he did a hometown gig in Harrisburg, PA on 3rd Street, he was brilliant!💚🎙
Saw Jeffrey live opening for Tracey Chapman back in the early 2000s and his performance of this song live got me to purchase all of his merch that day. Still feel like he should be considerably more well known than he is.
Saw Jeffrey way back in '03 doing this cover. He never got the credit he deserved for his music.
my mother tells me when she was pregnant with me, she was at one of his concerts, hence why my name is Jeffrey. beautiful voice, man.
You always know a
great song when you can strip away all affections, and bring it back to a guitar, and an amazing voice.
Jeffrey Gaines, I tip my hat to you sir, I’ve been listening to Peter Gabriel since the 70’s.
Phenomenal !!
Proof positive that major record labels have little interest in “Music” than “Muzak”.
You are so right! That's why I love this song done by Jeffrey. 💚 If I ever get married, this will be my song.
This is the ultimate song, my favorite.

Never heard of this guy before but oh man can he sing. Keep up the great work. Cheers
Amazing song! Love this! ❤️❤️
the cover song that almost made him a household name... which he deserved for his other great music.
Almost, but being better than mediocre listeners like you and I and everyone else commenting on this post know he's already a household name for all of our playlist
And yet this isn't even close to being as good as the original. I hope it made Peter rich...because he adds nothing to the song.
This is the best comment on RUclips. Your repliers are idiots in completely different ways. It’s kind of beautiful.
Incredible song, delivered by an incredible artist.
I haven't seen him in ages but he's a wonderful live performer. Puts on an excellent show and has some great original songs too. amazing song... so much depth and meaning behind the words...
I haven't listened to this song in a few years because of what it was attached to but now it's back on the playlist because no more attachment and it feels great!
I love this version of the song
2023* still love the song! THANK YOU FOR ALL THOSE MEMRORIES
Easy song to sing, hard song to sign well...got to have that soul and passion. Jeff does a hell of a job.
Love I get so lost, sometimes
Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away
I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are
All my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In your eyes
The light, the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes
Love, I don't like to see so much pain
So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive
And all my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In your eyes
The light, the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes
In your eyes, in your eyes
In your eyes, in your eyes
In your eyes, in your eyes

El mejor cover. Hace años lo amaba y me acordé de esta versión y la verdad es hermoso ❤
Jeffrey Gaines should've been a household name
remember the irony of life is that you'll always be remembered for something other that what you're actually good at
I have always loved this song. Peter made a classic but Jeffrey's Version is beautiful & soulful!

Love this version, I have it on my Zune.
Lol zune.
I remember i randomly found this song many yearss ago on some mp3 site. I was like whoa this guy is doing it, and i loved how he really played the sht outta that guitar, it matched his vocal passion. But yea it was a regular part of my listening rotation for awhile.
Great video, I love this song, I can hear it over and over and never get tired of it.
this is a great version, Jeff has a great soulful voice, and it carries over well in this song.
